But we can’t move forward without looking back, so let’s take time to reflect on the events that have added to our lives so we can embrace them and accept the New Year that is almost upon us. We have lost so many voices this year; it’s hard to remember we have to continue on this path without them. While I could list the many, many people – both famous and not – it would take a library of books to name them all, so instead I will share in groups of their notoriety and I do this not to diminish any one particular loss, there are just simply too many to name.

So let’s start at the beginning, what the hell is Saturnalia anyway?Saturnalia was basically like the best holiday party you’ve ever been to, times a million. It was actually kind of similar to the Purge, except instead of everyone going nuts and murdering each other, they abandoned social order to drink and make merry. Originally, this celebration was held annually for a day on the 17th of December, but the festival was so popular that it was extended to a week December 17-23. Despite efforts to reduce the length of the celebration Emperor Augustus tried to reduce it to three days, whilst Caligula attempted to cut it to five – those bastards – the celebration of Saturnalia remained a weeklong event. This was a period when the Romans indulged in excessive joy and merriment. As Sir James Frazer puts it in his work, The Golden Bough, it was a time “when the darker passions find a vent which would never be allowed them in the more staid and sober course of ordinary life.” And, while we don’t necessarily celebrate Christmas with wine-induced orgies, we have carried over a lot of Saturnalia’s traditions into modern day. The Roman poet Catullus described Saturnalia as “the best of times” — he didn’t even have to offer a caveat, like the Christmas-obsessed Charles Dickens did in Great Expectations. Saturnalia was just straight-up awesome.

Perhaps nowhere is this sinister air of danger more pronounced than on one particular highway in America’s “Four Corners” region of sections of Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico that has garnered such an intense, enduring reputation for being cursed and haunted that is has rightfully earned its morbid nickname “The Devil’s Highway.”

One area that has proven to be a wellspring of examples of the Mandela Effect are movies, in many cases ones that are loved all over the world and yet are not as we may remember them to be.Starting with one of the older movies where the Mandela Effect can be seen we have the iconic The Wizard of Oz, which actually has numerous instances of this in effect. The first is the famous line when Dorothy says to her dog, Toto, “Toto, I don’t think we’re in Kansas anymore.” It is such an iconic line that it is even known by people who have never seen the movie, and it has become a phrase in popular use to signify that things are getting weird. However, Dorothy never says that. She in fact says “Toto, I’ve a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.” It is close, but enough of a discrepancy that it drives people nuts.

It is one thing for him to promise a twenty-first-century government that is open and competent, as so many candidates have over the years. It is quite another to offer specifics on the size and cause of problems and provide a clear list of possible solutions that might help the government deliver on presidential promises. Consider five commitments toward that goal. And while these ideas are more likely to be implemented under a Biden administration—given President Trump’s disinterest in such approaches during his first four years—the same ideas would be useful if the president were reelected and opted to shift dramatically in his approach to a government reform agenda.

It is a vast cyber-universe which has connected humans and ideas in a way civilization has never seen before, and has grown far beyond what would have been imaginable even 10 years ago. This new cyber-realm also holds mysteries that dot its landscape, eerie cyber-enigmas that lurk in the dark corners of the Internet just as physical mysteries do in the real world.
