Ep 215True Elderhood No Matter Your Age

First, know that this episode is for people of all ages, because we are all elders to someone (there are always people younger than us!) and we are constantly having opportunities for growth in our spiritual maturity throughout our entire life. The concepts I introduce in this episode help shape how we age and the choices we make at all stages of life. Too often we believe that as we age, we should try to look, feel, and act as young as possible. But the truth is, that’s not the freaking point. We discuss a world where elders are seen as wisdom keepers, guides, and mentors for the community. Where they possess a deep knowledge and understanding that is invaluable to younger generations. This won’t just happen. We need to see this as our role to our people, and make our life decisions from that place. Instead of just sitting around and saving money to retire and travel, we can make our spiritual growth and maturity more intentional. We’ll jam on how we can continue to challenge the idea that aging is a period of decline, and talk about a few of the elders that I personally look up to and respect. You will learn:// Why thinking of true elderhood and spiritual maturity matters at ALL ages// How we often view elderhood vs what’s possible// Why taking responsibility for our spiritual maturity is crucial for playing an essential role in our communities// Why modern industrialized society doesn’t hold reverence or wisdom the possibilities in aging// Some examples of elders I deeply respect and look up to and the lessons they taught me// How we can continue to challenge the idea that aging is a period of decline// How spiritual maturity allows us to make our spiritual growth intentional AND still leaves plenty of room for fun and relaxationResources:// Joanna Macy & her work// Dipa Ma & her work// Nature and the Human Soul, by Bill Plotkin// Episode 154: Off the Cushion - Activism + Spirituality// Episode 191: Soulcentric Adulthood// I’d love to hear from you! Ep 213Pau Hana - How to Detach From Work

This week we learn from Native Hawaiian wisdom in the concept of “pau kahana,” which means “the work is done” (most people simply say, “pau hana”).The concept of pau kahana is more than just stating a fact, like “I’m off work now.” I’ve noticed that mykanaka - Indigenous Hawaiian - friends create a very distinct separation between work and personal life. So it’s not just about stopping work, but also engaging in practices that help us release the day’s burdens and shift gears. It’s a holistic mental, physical, and spiritual detachment from work after the workday ends that also allows us to shed the day’s burdens and shift gears. We’ll explore how this Indigenous wisdom is so important in today’s modern society, where it’s so hard to unplug from the demands of a world where work is only a smartphone away. I’ll share lots of helpful ideas to start your own pau kahana practice, including clear boundaries, connection to nature, people, and play. Ep 204What if This is as Good as it Gets?

In this episode we take the question of, “What if this is as good as it gets?” and explore why we are having the reactions we do to that question, and what if we allow acceptance of the way things are in order to feel more ease and joy in the present? (and explore our resistance to the concept of acceptance of reality as it is). This is not about tolerating violations of our fundamental rights and safety or basic quality of life, but rather addressing the fact that when we are constantly waiting for things to be different and striving for that because we think THAT is what will make us happy, we are ironically setting ourselves up for a lot of discontent. Striving for an external factor - a change in circumstances for happiness. You will learn:// How to look toward a future of possibilities… AND love the beauty of where we are NOW// How accepting life as it is can bring us peace - and still maintain possibility// Some signs we’re stuck in an unhealthy view of our current and potential life// How to use “what if this is as good as it gets?” as a mindfulness toolResources:// Episode 141: The Gift of Paradox// Episode 201: How Is This My Life Right Now?// I’d love to hear from you! Ep 196What it Means to be in Reciprocal Relationship

This week’s episode is all about our relationship with the more-than-human world, and the importance of not just taking from it, but also giving back. Today’s modern industrialized society encourages us to take and extract, but in doing so, we are left empty and disconnected, and the more-than-human world suffers as well. Ep 193Lessons in Trust and Interdependence - Crossing the Street in Hanoi

This week I reflect on a recent visit to Hanoi, Vietnam, and how a simple experience of crossing the street turned into a very healing and eye-opening lesson in trust and interdependence. We’ll talk about how in the US, when it comes to navigating traffic and driving, we are taught to assume we are invisible. Drive defensively. Cross streets assuming no one sees you. In Hanoi, it was the opposite. If you wanted to do something as basic as cross the street, you have to assume you would be seen, and that people cared and would take care. I was able to literally walk into oncoming traffic amongst strangers - something we can’t do in many industrialized growth societies like the US. We explore the vulnerability and beauty of how humans can move through chaos together when we come from a place of interdependence and interbeing. You will learn:// What is possible when we embrace interdependence and the fact that we are connected to everything// The gifts that taking risks by being vulnerable and trusting others can bring to us (while using discernment, of course!)// How we can find healing in interdependence and trust in one another// Why so many industrialized growth societies are so far from interdependent interbeing, and how we can offset thatResources:// We just had our bonus virtual retreat for the AMM early birds, so be sure to apply if you haven't yet, because it’s recorded and you can watch it in your pajamas AND still get the amazing January bonuses we have going on.
