Episode 108: Talking Points
Sometimes it’s best to see the forest through the trees. In this episode of the Random Nintendo Podcast, we step back from our usual news coverage and game impressions to take a broader look at Nintendo itself. The show first begins with our most anticipated games, which soon segues into an in-depth discussion of whether Nintendo relies too much on nostalgia, from Star Fox Zero to Pokemon Go. The conversation then turns to amiibo as we debate what the figurines’ future holds and whether the toy-to-life bubble will ever burst. We also explore the untapped potential of the Wii U’s GamePad before wrapping the episode with our wish list of must-have NX features. What do you think of how Nintendo uses nostalgia? Episode 88: Nintendo On Blast
Sometimes Nintendo does things we don’t understand. Sometimes they may start shipping limited edition New Nintendo 3DS systems in Europe before even announcing a release. Other times they may let Shigeru Miyamoto tell F-Zero fans that a new version of the game will only exist if it’s given a new control scheme. And on special occasions, the company may make new hardware that’s shaped like a donut. In this episode of the Random Nintendo Podcast, we discuss all these things as we breakdown Miyamoto’s recent interview with Smosh Games, weigh in on both the New 3DS Ambassador Edition and the Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D Limited Edition bundle, and look towards the future with the latest rumors on Nintendo’s next hardware. Plus, we share impressions of the Wii U Virtual Console version of Duck Hunt and rhythmic fighter KickBeat, as well as revisit the controversial Metroid: Other M. We want to know what you think, too! Share your thoughts in the comments below on any of the news or games discussed in the episode, or just on the show itself. Episode 75: An Indie Summer
The hot months of summer are normally a quiet period for game releases, but this year, indies are claiming the season as their own. In this episode of the Random Nintendo Podcast, we share impressions of two major indie releases on the eShop, Fuzzy Wuzzy Games’ Armillo and Yacht Club Games’ Shovel Knight, as well as the Wii U edition of Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark. Quite the opposite, in fact, as we also cover the latest on Nintendo’s big Fall titles, the first fully streaming 3DS game, and the controversy surrounding Mighty No. 9’s new crowdfunding campaign. Episode 70: Clubbing with Mario
Given Nintendo’s current finances, it’s likely that many of the company’s top brass would rather hit the links like Mario does. So it’s only fitting that this episode of the Random Nintendo Podcast pairs together analysis of Nintendo’s fiscal year-end performance with impressions of Mario Golf: World Tour. We begin with a full assessment of Nintendo’s past year in sales, then break down how the company plans to boost Wii U and 3DS sales going forward – from NFC figurines to the surprise announcement of Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. Our attention then turns to individual game news, including the reveal of Pokemon Art Academy, the ridiculousness of Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn, and the recent controversy surrounding Tomodachi Life, before concluding with our thoughts of Mario Golf’s 3DS debut. We also want to hear what you think! Leave a comment below with your thoughts on Mario Golf, any of the other topics discussed, or just the podcast as a whole. Episode 68: The Real Deal
A game about buying games. An island where the faces of Miis fly off their heads and into outer space. A fighting game where a ninja frog wears his tongue as a scarf. Yes, Nintendo got weird these past few weeks and we’ve got it all covered in this episode of the Random Nintendo Podcast. We kick off the show with an in-depth discussion of the recent Nintendo Directs for both Super Smash Bros. for Wii U/3DS and the newly announced Tomodachi Life, analyzing the fighter’s big changes and the life sim’s more passive approach to gaming. We then cover a variety of other news, including product placement in Mario Golf: World Tour, third party announcements, and March’s sales numbers. The episode concludes with the pooch pictured above as we share full impressions of Rusty’s Real Deal Baseball, a 3DS free-to-download title that combines baseball with a washed up dog strapped for cash. What did you think of the recent Nintendo Directs? Let us know by leaving a comment! We’d also love to hear your thoughts on the episode as a whole. Episode 66: Scrambled Egg-spectations
Nintendo went egg pun crazy to promote Yoshi’s New Island, but is the game worth all the egg-treme cleverness (sorry, we couldn’t resist)? We answer that very question in this episode of the Random Nintendo Podcast with full impressions of both Yoshi’s new 3DS adventure and the first game you can truly call a sitcom, Weapon Shop de Omasse. To start things off, however, we egg-amine (we’re on a roll here) all the latest news from last week’s Game Developers Conference and beyond, including a look at the latest indie game announcements, an analysis of the changing face of the video game industry, and a breakdown of February’s sales numbers. It all adds up to one egg-cellent episode (we can’t stop now). What’s your take on Yoshi’s New Island? Leave a comment to let us know what you think of the game, any of the other topics from this episode, or even just our egg-cruciatingly bad pun addiction (this is our cry for help).
