Episode 142: Merry Switchmas
It’s the week after Switchmas, when all through the house, every creature was stirring from a plumber to a electric mouse. Yes, a week has gone by since the news blowout that was Switch Presentation 2017 (dubbed “Switchmas” by fans), and now we’re diving deep into the console, its games, and Nintendo’s next steps in this jam-packed episode of the Random Nintendo Podcast. We start with a look at the system itself, covering everything from how the Joy-Cons reshape the Switch narrative to Nintendo’s questionable online service choices. We then switch (ahem) to the software side of things, exploring what the current crop of games may tell us about the system’s future and its intended audience. Plus, we break down all the big first-party games from 1-2-Switch to ARMS to Super Mario Odyssey. What did you think of Nintendo’s Switch Presentation? Are you getting a Switch? Episode 141: I Dream of Half-Genie
2017 may be just another year for most of us, but for Nintendo, it couldn’t be any more critical. It’s the year of the Switch and that means Nintendo will be making some pretty big moves. In this episode of the Random Nintendo Podcast, we cast our predictions for what to expect in the year ahead. We begin with the Switch itself, looking at the games and release strategies it’ll need to succeed (plus some fun Smash Bros. speculation for good measure!). We then turn to Nintendo’s growing role in the mobile space, discussing the sales performance of Super Mario Run and what it means for future pricing structures. From there, it’s the 3DS’s turn as we examine its expanding role as the budget system and how that’ll affect its lineup going forward. We then conclude with full impressions of one of Wii U’s final games, and our episode namesake, Shantae: Half-Genie Hero. What are your predictions for Nintendo’s 2017? In this episode of the Random Nintendo Podcast, we return to the world of Monster Hunter to bring you our impressions of the latest entry in the series, Monster Hunter Generations. Before embarking on that journey, however, there is lots of news to cover! We start things off with an NX roundup, including an examination of how its rumored controls could work and the latest on which third parties are (and aren’t) supporting the system. We then turn our attention to the current state of game announcements themselves, exploring why it is that major expos like Gamescom are no longer major newsmakers. From there, it’s all about Pokemon as we discuss the latest on Sun & Moon and Pokemon Go, as well as dive into the deepest, darkest lore of the franchise. The episode then wraps up with a look at the latest sales numbers, our picks for best Metroid games in honor of the franchise’s 30th anniversary, and yes, those Monster Hunter Generations impressions. What’s your favorite Monster Hunter game? Let us know your thoughts on the franchise, or anything else covered in this episode, via the comment section below. Episode 130: Change We Can Believe In
If there’s one word that sums up this episode of the Random Nintendo Podcast, it’s change. Be it Pokemon Snn & Moon, Metroid Prime: Blast Ball or even the return of Layton, nothing is following in its own footsteps. We start off with the biggest change of them all, Nintendo’s move from two gaming devices to one with reports of NX truly being a hybrid device. We break down what that means for both the company’s future and the system’s potential power. We then shift over to game changers, as in changes in actual games, with our thoughts on Pokemon Sun & Moon’s new gameplay flow and battle mechanics, as well as the disappointing removal of key features from Pokemon Go. Our attention then turns outside the Poke-verse, from the new Lady Layton to our impressions of Metroid Prime: Blast Ball, before concluding with Angel’s gaming tales from Japan. What do you think of the NX as hybrid? Let us know in the comments below and we’ll highlight our favorite comments when discussing the NX in the future. Episode 128: Go Pokemon Go
It’s the middle of the night. You’ve been traipsing through the woods for hours trying to catch that elusive Tangela. All you have to show for it are six Weedle and a Venonat. You’re out of Pokeballs, you have no coins, and the nearest PokeStop is two miles back the way you came. You hear the low rumble of thunder off in the distance. You know what you must do. You know you have to turn back and go home, your Tangela dreams on pause. And while that vine-ball of a Pokemon may stay uncaught for now, you know there is one thing you still can catch: Episode 128 of the Random Nintendo Podcast. Okay, maybe this isn’t the exact scenario of how you’re listening to us, but there couldn’t be a more fitting episode if it was as discuss the good and bad of Pokemon Go, plus what we want to see the app do next. We also revisit Nintendo’s other mobile app, Miitomo, to see what the company can do to bring it back to life. From there, we switch gears to Nintendo’s own platforms with thoughts on the latest Pokemon reveals for the 3DS’s Sun & Moon, the end of Splatoon’s Splatfests on Wii U, and reports of NX being a kid-centric console. We then wrap up the show with hands-on impressions of three E3 Nindie darlings – Severed, Azure Striker Gunvolt 2, and Shantae: Half-Genie Hero – along with a revisit of the Phoenix Wright anime. Of course, there’s plenty of other news to discuss too, including fresh details on Pokemon Go and Yooka-Laylee, some positive E3 2016 news, and even more new 3DS game announcements from Nintendo. Episode 124: Horse of Cards
If last episode was all about the bombs Nintendo dropped, then this episode of the Random Nintendo Podcast is the fallout as we see where the chips – or in this case, perhaps cards – fall for the rest of 2016. Also, we’ve got horses, solitaire, and a frog named Grippy Toad. The show begins with look at what will be keeping us busy now that NX and Zelda are off the table for 2016, including the first solid details on Pokemon Sun & Moon, a 2DS renaissance with both a price drop and new game announcements, and Mario’s Minecraft takeover. We also explore the ongoing woes of the toys-to-life world, examining Disney Infinity’s sudden discontinuation and what it could mean for amiibo going forward. The show then concludes with our full impressions of horse racing/solitaire hybrid Pocket Card Jockey and Wii U’s Star Fox Guard. Have you had a chance to horse around with Pocket Card Jockey? Episode 123: Do a Barrel Roll
A lot of bombs dropped in the world of Nintendo – and no, we’re not just talking about the ones you fire in Star Fox Zero. In this episode of the Random Nintendo Podcast, we make sense of it all with analysis of each decision, including thoughts on the NX’s potential year-one game lineup, Nintendo’s smartphone plans for the Fall, and a breakdown of the company’s financials. We then conclude the episode with in-depth impressions of a game packed with some actual bombs (and lasers and anthropomorphic animals), Star Fox Zero. Episode 122: Lost Service
One-and-done games are so last generation. It’s 2016 and for Nintendo, it’s all about services – from Splatoon to Super Mario Maker, these are the games that continue to evolve beyond their initial purchase. And now, we can add Miitomo to the list. In this episode of the Random Nintendo Podcast, we share our impressions of how well the social app holds up after multiple weeks of play and what needs to change for its continued success. We also examine a variety of new rumors, including potential Zelda details and reports of service-style games like Splatoon and Mario Maker coming to NX. Plus, we discuss how Nintendo can boost waning amiibo interest, analyze March sales numbers, and revisit Mario Super Sluggers just in time for baseball season. Are you still playing Miitomo?
