OVERVIEW OF BOVINE RESPIRATORY DISEASE COMPLEX Bovine respiratory disease (BRD), shipping fever pneumonia, or undifferentiated fever is a respiratory disease of cattle of multifactorial etiology with Mannheimia haemolytica and, less commonly, Pasteurella multocida, Histophilus somni ( see Histophilosis), or Mycoplasma bovis being the important bacterial agents involved. Viral pathogens may also be involved, such as bovine herpesvirus 1, parainfluenza-3 virus, and bovine respiratory syncytial virus. BRD has a multifactorial etiology and develops as a result of complex interactions between environmental factors, host factors, and pathogens. Environmental factors (eg, weaning, transport, commingling, crowding, inclement weather, dust, and inadequate ventilation) serve as stressors that adversely affect the immune and nonimmune defense mechanisms of the host animal. In addition, certain environmental factors (eg, crowding and inadequate ventilation) can enhance the transmission of infectious agents among animals. Many infectious agents have been associated with BRD. An initial pathogen (eg, a virus) may alter the animal’s defense mechanisms, allowing colonization of the lower respiratory tract by bacteria. BRD is most commonly associated with the transport and assembly of large groups of recently weaned calves into feedlots. Morbidity in these types of feeder calves often peaks within the first 7–10 days after feedlot arrival. Morbidity can approach 35%–50%, and case fatality is 5%–10%; however, the levels of morbidity and mortality strongly depend on the array of risk factors present in the cattle being fed. The use of broad-spectrum antimicrobials labeled for bovine respiratory disease is the primary treatment, with macrolides and fenicols most commonly used as first-line treatment. Prevention and control are achieved via vaccination programs, preconditioning, identification and treatment of subclinically infected animals, and biosecurity. Etiology of Bovine Respiratory Disease The pathogenesis of bovine respiratory disease involves a stress factor, sometimes coupled with viral infection, which results in suppressed immune defenses and the proliferation of bacteria in the upper respiratory tract. Subsequently, these bacteria colonize the lower respiratory tract and cause bronchopneumonia with a cranioventral distribution in the lung. Many of the bacteria and viruses involved are commensal organisms of the upper respiratory tract that can be isolated from a proportion of healthy animals. Multiple stress factors contribute to the suppression of host defense mechanisms in cattle. Weaning is a noteworthy stressor, and the incidence of this disease is highest in recently weaned calves. Transportation over long distances serves as a stressor; it may be associated with exhaustion, starvation, dehydration, chilling, and overheating, depending on weather conditions. Additional important stressors include passage through auction markets; commingling, processing, and surgical procedures on arrival at the feedlot; dusty environmental conditions; and nutritional stress associated with a change to high-energy rations in the feedlot. The individual viral and bacterial etiologies, clinical signs, lesions, and treatment are discussed under Viral Infections Associated with Bovine Respiratory Disease Complex in Cattle and Bacterial Pneumonia in Cattle with Bovine Respiratory Disease Complex. Viruses associated with BRD include: bovine herpesvirus 1 (IBR) bovine respiratory syncytial virus parainfluenza-3 virus bovine viral diarrhea virus bovine adenovirus bovine coronavirus Bacteria associated with BRD include: Mannheimia haemolytica Pasteurella multocida Histophilus somni Mycoplasma bovis Bibersteinia trehalosi Control and Prevention of Bovine Respiratory Disease Prevention of bovine respiratory disease should focus on decreasing the stressors that contribute to development of the disease. Cattle should be assembled rapidly into groups, and new animals should not be introduced to established groups. Mixing of cattle from different sources should be avoided or minimized if possible; however, in the North American beef industry, this risk factor is almost unavoidable for large intensive feedlots. Transport time should be minimized, and rest periods, with access to feed and water, should be provided during prolonged transport. Calves should ideally be weaned 2–3 weeks before shipment, and surgical procedures should be performed in advance of transport; however, the availability of these “preconditioned” calves is quite limited. Cattle Industry News: Beef Exports to China, Third Avian Flu in Humans, USDA Combats Avian Flu, Beef On Dairy CHINA BLOCKS JBS USA BEEF EXPORTS OVER RACTOPAMINE TRACES According to the Meating Place, the Chinese government has halted beef exports from the JBS USA facility in Greeley, Colorado, according to the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). The export block is reportedly due to detected traces of the feed additive ractopamine. While ractopamine is deemed safe for use in the United States, it is banned or restricted in China and 160 other countries. In response, JBS issued a statement indicating they are “working diligently with U.S. and Chinese authorities to resolve the situation as soon as possible.” FSIS has also confirmed that it is conducting its own investigation into the matter. FSIS provided further details in a statement to Reuters: "China customs detected ractopamine in a batch of frozen beef omasum products exported to China from these establishments and destroyed this batch of products in accordance with their regulations." In addition to the JBS USA facility, China has also blocked meat products from Cool Port Oakland, a cold storage facility in California. CDC REPORTS THIRD U.S. CASE OF HIGHLY PATHOGENIC AVIAN INFLUENZA IN HUMANS The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed the third case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in humans within the country. This latest case marks the second occurrence in Michigan. While the three cases are unrelated, they all involve dairy farm workers exposed to infected cows, suggesting probable cow-to-person transmission. Notably, this most recent case is the first in the U.S. to present typical influenza-like symptoms, according to the CDC. The CDC is closely monitoring influenza data and reports no unusual activity or increased emergency room visits. The risk to the general public remains low, as all cases involve direct contact with infected cows. Cattle Industry News: Agridime Ponzi Scheme, NCBA response to Farm Bill, TSCRA Relief Fund AGRIDIME: NORTH DAKOTA GROUP MAY BUY CATTLE COMPANY THAT OWES MILLIONS According to the Bismarck Tribune, Jeff Beach/North Dakota Monitor, a North Dakota rancher said he is working on a deal for a small group of investors to take over a cattle and beef marketing business that was labeled a Ponzi scheme and owes North Dakotans millions of dollars. Wylie Bice, who ranches near Killdeer, said the group is close on a final price for Texas-based Agridime, with the goal of making it an asset to North Dakota ranchers. Bice said he hopes the group can close on a deal by July 1 to take over Agridime facilities in Texas, Arizona and Kansas. He told the North Dakota Monitor he hopes North Dakota can supply about 60% of the cattle that the business will need -- about 10,000 head per year. Bice, who is among the investors who lost money with Agridime, said the group includes a former business partner of his who is in Texas and would come out of retirement to help manage the company. In December, the Securities and Exchange Commission accused the company of operating as a Ponzi scheme by taking money from new investors to pay off previous investors instead of investing that money into cattle. The cattle were to be fed until reaching market weight and then processed. Agridime would then market the meat directly to consumers. A court-appointed receiver has been trying to determine what assets remain for the company that owes millions of dollars to investors and cattle producers in 14 states. In the first quarterly report, posted May 1 on the Agridime.com website, the receiver, Steven Fahey of Texas, said it was involved in “serious discussions with a North Dakota-based investor group.” The group would purchase the assets of the company, including the remaining meat and cattle inventory. The report said a sale could be submitted for court approval by mid-June. The retail and wholesale meat business would continue under the American Grazed Beef name. Mea

Cattle Industry News BIRD FLU UPDATE: NEW CASES IN MICHIGAN, NORTH DAKOTA CHECKS IN, LAWMAKERS WEIGH IN State animal health officials confirmed new cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in dairy cows in Michigan. That announcement comes as North Dakota announced no cases so far and U.S. senators called for better communication among regulators to help stem the tide of new outbreaks. The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) announced positive tests for HPAI in dairy cows in Clinton, Gratiot and Ionia counties, with additional testing expected soon. MDARD stated that the best tool available to combat the spread of HPAI, regardless of species, is using enhanced biosecurity efforts that include isolating new or returning animals on farms, monitoring the health of animals daily, and cleaning and disinfecting trailers used to haul animals. Meanwhile, officials in North Dakota reported there have been no cases of HPAI in cattle as of May 10, although the infections of dairy cows in nine other states this spring continues to be monitored, according to State Veterinarian Dr. Ethan Andress. USDA recently announced plans to provide a total of $98 million to help states and ranchers stem the spread of HPAI beyond birds as state and federal officials continue to monitor cases in 42 herds so far, including South Dakota. Enhanced biosecurity efforts are expected to remain in place as new information about HPAI in cows is gathered, officials added. PROPER COOKING KILLS H5N1 IN GROUND BEEF With the continued spread of H5N1, some have questioned the proper way to prepare beef to ensure its safety. The USDA said in its latest update that ongoing research shows that standard recommended procedures for cooking ground beef eliminates the H5N1 virus. USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service or APHIS reported that no virus remained in burgers cooked to 145 and 160 degrees Fahrenheit and that these results validate that recommended cooking temperatures are sufficient to kill H5N1 in meat. EPISODE 30 DETAILS SECOND U.S. DAIRY WORKER INFECTED WITH AVIAN BIRD FLU CONFIRMED - MICHIGAN According to Reuters and reported by Agweb, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said a second human case of avian bird flu (H5N1) has been confirmed in the United States since the virus was first confirmed in dairy cattle in late March. A Texas dairy worker was confirmed to be infected in April. Michigan and Texas are among nine states to report bird flu in dairy herds. Similar to the Texas case, the patient in Michigan only reported eye symptoms, the CDC said. The Michigan worker had mild symptoms and recovered, according to the state's Department of Health and Human Services. The worker had regular exposure to livestock infected with bird flu, Michigan said. The U.S. Department of Agriculture said it believes unpasteurized milk is the primary vector for transmitting the virus among cows, though officials do not know exactly how it spreads. Cattle Industry News ALABAMA BECOMES SECOND STATE TO OUTLAW CULTIVATED MEAT Alabama is now the second state in America where cultivated meat cannot be manufactured or commercialized as Gov. Kay Ivey on Tuesday signed a bill (SB 23) that includes the cultivated meat ban. Violating the law will be a class C misdemeanor, which carries the possibility of up to a three-month jail sentence and a fine of $500. The new law takes effect October 1, 2024. Florida became the first state to pass such a ban earlier this month, with Gov. Ron DeSantis signed the bill (SB 1084) into law on May 1, 2024. PROPOSALS FINALLY SEEN ON FARM BILL After months of waiting, there is movement on farm bill legislation in Congress. On May 2, 2024, both the House and Senate provided farm bill proposals. The USDA has been operating on a 1-year extension of the 2018 farm bill. That is set to expire on Sept. 30. Areas taking top priority in the two bills are conservation, nutrition programs, and energy alternatives and incentives. Deeper in the proposals, emphasis is placed on beginning farmers and ranchers. Lending is of concern with such high-interest rates and lack of credit options. Under the credit title in the House’s farm bill proposal, finance options are enhanced for new, young, beginning or veteran farmers. It also gives focus to commercial lenders’ ability to be a reliable source of credit and capital. YET ANOTHER NEGATIVE QUARTER FOR BEYOND MEAT Beyond Meat reported another sharp decline in revenues for its first fiscal quarter, and net losses that were slightly improved from the same period a year ago. The company reported top-line revenues down 18%. STRONG FRESH MEAT SALES IN APRIL In an April study among 1,700 U.S. consumers, 210 Analytics found that 34% of consumers are worse off financially now than they were one year ago. However year to date, fresh meat sales continue to increase by 1 percent. Tyson Foods Inc. officials said they do not have a prediction on when U.S. ranchers will begin rebuilding the nation's cattle herd after high feed costs and drought in 2023 prompted suppliers to reduce the number of cattle for slaughter. The moves resulted in tighter supplies and increased the amount Tyson pays for livestock, in addition to sending the processor’s beef segment to an adjusted operating loss of $34 million in the second quarter and a loss of $151 million for the first six months of the fiscal year. Tyson earlier this month projected an operating loss of between $40 million and $100 million for its beef business for all of fiscal 2024 in the wake of an anticipated 2% decrease in domestic beef production this year from fiscal 2023. SCIENTISTS FIND H5N1 AVIAN FLU VIRUS IN WASTEWATER ACROSS TEXAS. Researchers are reporting that they confirmed the presence of the virus that causes avian influenza in wastewater recently monitored in nine of 10 Texas cities. A team of scientists from Baylor College of Medicine and the University of Texas Health Sciences Center announced the findings as part of an investigation of recent H5N1 outbreaks in cattle and ferrets in recent months. Scientists are trying to determine how the H5N1 virus is spreading to dairy cows and are increasingly considering wastewater sampling programs as a main surveillance tool, according to a report on the findings from the Center for Infectious Disease Research & Policy (CIDRAP) at the University of Minnesota. Academic scientists analyzing the USDA’s publicly accessible database of avian flu DNA, collected in and around dozens of dairy herds in nine states, shows that the H5N1 strain may have made a single jump from a bird into a cow. The transmission could have occurred up to four months ago, according to preliminary findings published online. Michael Worobey, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Arizona who is leading a group of researchers studying the outbreak from outside federal agencies, tweeted that genetic data shared by USDA “strongly suggests there was single origin, at least for these sequences. Possibly in late 2023/early 2024.” He said there were indications that birds have been reinfected by cattle carrying the viral strain. The outbreak in dairy cattle was first identified in late March. The USDA this week said that ground beef from cattle infected with H5N1 is safe to consume, after retail samples were collected, tested and found to be all negative for H5N1. USDA LAUNCHES BEEF TESTING BLITZ AMID H5N1 OUTBREAKS IN DAIRY CATTLE. Three separate studies by government scientists are underway to monitor and test food supply safety in response to the widening outbreak of the H5N1 avian virus strain in dairy cattle, the USDA announced this week. The regulatory safety efforts follow news last week of confirmed infection in a herd in Colorado, the ninth state to be affected since March. USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is conducting polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests of ground beef from retailers in the nine states to detect if any viral particles are present. Meanwhile, the Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) is taking muscle samples from culled dairy cows that have been condemned for systemic pathologies, which are also being tested for viral particles. Any positive tests in the two studies are to be followed up with checks for live virus by the Agricultural Research Service (ARS). Meanwhile, ARS is carrying out a study using a virus “surrogate” in a study of ground beef to determine what temperature would be required for safe cooking if live virus were present. “Results from these studies are forthcoming, and we will share information as it becomes available,” the USDA said. The agency urged consumers to maintain proper handling of raw meat and cooking to a safe internal temperature. “USDA is confident that the meat supply is safe. USDA has a rigorous meat inspection process, where USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) veterinarians are present at all federal livestock slaughter facilities. FSIS inspects each animal before slaughter, and all cattle carcasses must pass inspection after slaughter and be determined to be fit to enter the human food supply.” GROUND BEEF PASSES USDA’S H5N1 SAFETY TESTS. Ground beef from cattle infected with H5N1 is safe to consume, according to testing conducted by the USDA. The agency announced the findings Wednesday after its Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) collected 30 ground beef samples from retail outlets in states where dairy cattle herds had tested positive for the influenza virus. The samples underwent PCR testing at APHIS’ National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL). The results revealed that all samples tested negative for H5N1, reaffirming the safety of the meat supply. The findings come days after Colombia issued restrictions on U.S. beef imports due to concerns over dairy cows testing positive for avian influenza. The move was the first and only instance, as of Thursday, of a country limiting beef trade due to avian influenza in cows. FINAL RULE: ELECTRONIC IDENTIFICATION TAGS. The U.S. Department of Agriculture is getting set to publish the agency’s final rule, “Use of Electronic Identification Ear Tags as Official Identification in Cattle and Bison,” in the Federal Register. The rule would require official ear tags sold for or applied to cattle and bison to be readable both visually and electronically (EID). Cattle organization R-CALF has strongly opposed the rule stating, “The USDA has slapped independent cattle producers, who have worked closely with the USDA in the past to very successfully control, contain, and eradicate foreign animal diseases, in the face. “We will fight against the implementation of this disastrous rule that infringes on the freedoms and liberties of our nation’s independent cattle farmers and ranchers. EPISODE 28 DETAILS BILL INTRODUCED TO PREVENT MANDATORY EID TAGS. Wednesday U.S. Senator Mike Rounds (R-S.D.) introduced legislation that would prevent federal government overreach on the operations of South Dakota farmers and ranchers. The bill would prevent the Secretary of Agriculture from implementing any rule or regulation requiring the mandatory use of electronic identification tags, or RFID tags, on cattle and bison. In January 2023, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) published a proposal to require cattle and bison to have visually and electronically readable tags. This proposed rule would also require records to be entered into a tribal, state or federal database, allowing the federal government to access this information. Senator Rounds stated that “South Dakota cattle producers don’t need DC bureaucrats telling them how to manage and track their livestock”. He said “USDA’s proposed RFID mandate is federal government overreach, plain and simple. I’m pleased to be introducing this legislation to block the Secretary of Agriculture from mandating the use of electronic tags in cattle and bison herds. If farmers and ranchers want to use electronic tags, they can do so voluntarily.” This legislation is endorsed by the South Dakota Stockgrowers Association and R-CALF USA. COLUMBIA RESTRICTS U.S. BEEF IMPORTS DUE TO AVIAN FLU According to MeatingPlace.com, Colombia issued restrictions on U.S. beef imports due to concerns over dairy cows testing positive for avian influenza, according to a notice from the USDA. The move marks the first instance of a country limiting beef trade due to bird flu in cows. While Colombia's beef imports from the U.S. are relatively small annually, the decision underscores growing concerns over the virus's potential impact. The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) updated its website this week, confirming the ban on beef products originating from cattle slaughtered in states including Idaho, Kansas, Michigan, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, South Dakota and Texas (all states that reported cows testing positive. Colombia has temporarily restricted raw bovine meat products, although shipments with valid import permits may still be subject to port delays, the notice said. EPISODE 27 DETAILS FLORIDA BECOMES THE FIRST STATE TO BAN THE SALE OF LAB GROWN MEAT. The first bill banning lab-grown meat was signed into law by Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida on May 1. According to SB 1084, the bill prohibits the manufacture for sale, sale, holding or offering for sale, or distribution of cultivated meat in the state. In a press conference in Hardee County, which is one of the top five cattle-producing counties in the state, the Governor spoke about the importance of supporting rural economies and agriculture. Governor Desantais said, “We’re fighting back against an ideology that ultimately wants to eliminate meat production in the U.S. and around the globe”. He went on to say, “In the state of Florida we’ve put down the marker very clearly; we stand with agriculture. We stand with the cattle ranchers. We stand with our farmers because we understand it's important for the backbone of the state. It's important for our culture. It's important for our heritage so the bill that I'm going to sign today is going to say basically take your fake, lab-grown meat elsewhere. We're not doing that in the state of Florida.” There has been an ongoing debate across the country in regard to cultivated meat products. Currently, lab-grown meat is only approved to be sold in the U.S. and Singapore. Italy was the first country in the EU to ban lab-grown meat, a decision made in February 2024. This is government overreach at its worst.” National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) President Mark Eisele, a Wyoming rancher, issued the following statement in response to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) final traceability rule: “USDA’s final traceability rule updates the existing requirement for animal identification that has been in place since 2013, switching from solely visual tags to tags that are both electronically and visually readable for certain classes of cattle moving interstate. Many producers are already familiar with using these visual tags and under the new rule, they will instead use electronic tags. NCBA has worked hard to secure $15 million in funding for producers to reduce the cost of implementing this change. We also remain committed to safeguarding producers’ private data and continuing to reduce the cost of ear tags for farmers and ranchers. Our industry faces a tremendous threat from the risk of a future foreign animal disease on American soil. To avoid devastating financial losses during a potential outbreak and to help producers quickly return to commerce, we need an efficient animal disease traceability system.” The USDA final traceability rule amends a previous 2013 rule that requires sexually intact cattle 18 months of age or older, rodeo and exhibition cattle, and dairy cattle moving interstate to have an official form of animal identification. The 2013 rule, which cattle producers already comply with, instituted visual ID tags for interstate movement. The new final rule switches producers to electronic ID tags. The rule will not take effect for six months to provide time for producers to prepare. This puts the implementation date after Nov. 1, 2024. Producers are asked to work with their local veterinarian and state veterinarian to secure proper tags and protocol. The USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) issued a Federal Order Wednesday that requires testing for interstate movement of dairy cattle and mandatory reporting of positive test results. The order aims to prevent the spread of bovine influenza A virus (BIAV) in response to the detection of the virus in dairy cattle. Following the confirmation of HPAI in a commercial poultry flock in February 2022, over 1,100 HPAI detections have been identified on poultry farms in the U.S. Since late March 2024, USDA, along with other agencies and laboratories, investigated the emergence of H5N1 virus in dairy cows. Under the Federal Order, dairy cattle must receive a negative test for Influenza A virus at approved laboratories before interstate movement. Positive test results must be reported to USDA APHIS by laboratories and state veterinarians. The order aims to mitigate the risk of further spread of the virus, which poses a threat to both cattle and poultry, and to ensure the safety of livestock and the agricultural industry. It’s likely that beef production for this year will be only 509 million pounds – 1.9% - lower than a year ago, the report said. That’s a sharp improvement from the expected 8% drop forecast a year ago. Meanwhile, the USDA held steady with its beef import forecast, anticipating a 12% rise, and its expectations for an 8% drop in beef exports. That means that the country’s supply of beef per capita is roughly unchanged, according to Steiner analysis. Beef Exports Fall As Imports Rise Derrell Peel, Oklahoma State University Extension Livestock Marketing Specialist recently wrote for meatingplace.com saying that U.S. beef trade continues to evolve in the face of a unique domestic cattle market situation. Beef exports in February were down 1.3% year over year with the two-month total thus far in 2024 down 2.6%. This follows a 2023 year over year decrease of 14.3% from record 2022 beef exports. Beef exports in the first two months of the year are down year over year from most of the top markets; including number one Japan, number two South Korea, and number three China/Hong Kong. Additionally, Canada, the number five market is down 2.0% thus far in 2024, along with number six Taiwan. Mexico, which had been the number three market as recently as 2019, is currently the number four market but recovering. Beef exports to Mexico were up in January and February. Beef imports in February were up 23.8% year over year and are up 31.9% in the first two months of the year. Beef imports this year are led by Brazil, who jumps out strongly to fill the “other country” quota early in the year, with shipments moderating after two or three months in the face of the over-quota tariff. Imports from Brazil are up 41.8% year over year thus far in 2024. Imports from Australia are up sharply so far this year. Canada is the number two import source, slightly ahead of Australia and up 9.0 percent year over year. New Zealand is the number four beef import source and is up 48.6 percent thus far in 2024. Beef exports continue to face headwinds as beef production decreases and beef prices increase in the U.S. market. A generally strong U.S. dollar adds additional headwinds, making U.S. beef imports more expensive to international customers. At the same time, decreasing domestic beef supplies in the U.S., coupled with higher prices, attracts additional beef imports, with the strong dollar adding additional incentive for beef imports. As is typical, beef imports are heavily dominated by imports of lean processing beef to supplement decreasing supplies of non fed beef in the U.S. Decreasing lean beef supplies, coupled with strong ground beef demand in the U.S. is pushing 90 percent lean prices (and ground beef prices) to record levels. Fed beef (steer and heifer) production is declining, but the large percentage of yield grade 4 and 5 in feedlot cattle means that the supply of fatty (50 percent lean) trimmings is high relative to lean beef supplies and stimulating strong demand for domestic and imported lean processing beef to increase ground beef production. MINNESOTA REPORTS FIRST HPAI COMMERCIAL OUTBREAK OF 2024. The USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) reported the first commercial outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in Minnesota in 2024. The report, which was listed last week, said the outbreak occurred on a turkey farm in Meeker County, and resulted in 70,000 birds culled. This was the first commercial outbreak in Minnesota since December. Last month, the state reported a baby goat tested positive for avian flu from a quarantined poultry flock. Michigan and New Mexico have reported cases as well. An estimated 88.17 million birds have been affected in a total of 1,122 flocks in 48 states so far, according to APHIS even as the pace of confirmed outbreaks continues to slow down. Bovine officials are watching this very closely in light of the earlier initial case in cattle that was detected in Texas approximately 1 month ago.. These reports provide critical data and the decision to end them is completely misguided. NCBA Vice President of Government Affairs Ethan Lane said “It is disingenuous for the same agency which touts its commitment to transparency in livestock markets to arbitrarily cease publication of reports which provide just that. American Farmers Network (AFN) announced it is spearheading the establishment of comprehensive certification criteria for regenerative grass-fed beef production. With USDA approval to use the Regenerative Agriculture claim on its packaging, AFN said it aims to set industry standards across the beef category, the organization said in a release. AFN's said its partnership with certifying organizations aims to create transparent standards for the beef industry, aligning with regenerative agriculture principles of soil health and animal welfare. AFN plans to work with retailers and partners to make regeneratively raised beef accessible nationwide. By providing incentives to producers to adopt regenerative practices, AFN seeks to cultivate a more sustainable agricultural landscape. The certification criteria will cover grazing management, soil health, animal welfare and social responsibility, the company said. Ranches meeting these standards will earn formal certification, distinguishing their products as sustainable and ethical choices in the marketplace. LIVESTOCK INVENTORY DECLINE HURTING COLD STORAGE NUMBERS. The USDA's March Cold Storage report revealed declines in red meat and poultry supplies for 2024. Analysis from Market Intel detailed how the declining livestock inventories are impacting the cold storage numbers. Red meat in freezers decreased by 4% from February 2023, hitting a 23-year low at 1.05 billion pounds, while frozen poultry stocks remained stable at 1.03 billion pounds. The infection, only the second human case of H5N1 ever recorded in the country, is worrying public health experts who for decades have cautioned that avian flu could pose a serious threat. The case is the only one state and federal officials have identified, and there is no evidence that it is being spread among humans. The illness is mild and the worker is expected to recover, said two people familiar with the matter. While there have been confirmed avian flu fatalities in other parts of the world, the U.S. has only ever recorded a handful of mild cases, according to the CDC. The new human case follows recent cow infections in Texas, Idaho, Michigan and New Mexico that have raised alarm among public health experts who worry the virus’ spread to mammals could make it easier for the virus to infect humans. Back in 2022, half of the ownership for the same cow broke a record with a $800,000 dollar price tag. With the most recent purchase, the total worth of Viatina-19 FIV Mara Imóveis is now valued at $4.3 million dollars. These ancestors were called Ongole, the change of name to Nelore (which corresponds to a district of the old Presidency of Madrás, now belonging to the new State of Andra, by the Bengal Sea) happened in Brazil by some authors as a synonym to Ongole. This breed, through its history has faced extreme weather conditions, the arid lands of Belushistan, the cold winters of Punjab, the alluvial lands of the Ganges and the torrid lands by the Bengal sea. This provided the Ongole breed with the adaptation genes that are now favourably expressed in the modern Nelore. The Nelore was first acknowledged in Brazil in 1868, when a ship on its way to England carrying two Ongoles stopped in Salvador, Bahia, and the animals were sold. Ten years later, a breeder from Rio de Janeiro, named Manoel Ubelhart Lemgruber, bought another couple from the Hamburg Zoo in Germany. Then the Nelore breed expanded gradually, first in Rio de Janeiro and Bahia, then in Minas Gerais, having reached Uberaba in 1875. The creation of the Nelore Herd Book and the definition of the breed standards in Uberaba, 1938, was of great relevance in the formation of the Nelore. In 1960, 20 animals were imported, and in 1962, the last and most relevant purchase of live animals from India authorised by the Brazilian Government, 84 Ongoles were imported. These became founders of important breeding lines like Godahvari, Karvadi and Taj Mahal, and were decisive to the great expansion of the Brazilian herd in the last 30 years, going from 56 million in 1965 to 160 million in 1995, 100 million of which are Nelore. Today, the number of purebred registered Nelore is above 5 million. The challenge faced by selection is to multiply the genetic gains to a much larger population. To multiply the genetic potential of Nelore sires, Artificial Insemination has been used in large scale since the 60’s. Sales of Nelore semen represent 65% of the AI market of all beef breeds in Brazil. The leading Nelore sire there produced and sold 34,000 straws of semen in 1995, followed by another Nelore that sold 30,000, which means that both sires must have bred more than 20,000 cows. The Nelore is of the Bos indicus species and has the characteristic hump above its shoulders and loose skin. It is usually white in colour with a black skin, muzzle and tail, and they have comparatively long legs which helped them walk in water when grazing. Nelore have the shortest ears of most Bos indicus types. The Nelore are horned, these are thick brown horns that point up but there is a naturally polled strain of the breed too. The Nelore has heat and insect resistance due to its loose, thick black skin and covering of white hair which reflects the sun's rays, this breed has sweat glands that are twice as big and 30% more numerous compared to European breeds. It has a slow metabolism which creates less heat and enables it to feed less often adding to its high resistance to bloat. Ron DeSantis wants to keep lab-grown meat out of Florida. Over the last several months, Florida legislators have been quietly working to ban — and criminalize — the production and sale of cell-cultivated meat across the state, via the introduction of two bills, House Bill 1071 and Senate Bill 1084. On February 6, the state's House of Representatives passed Senate Bill 1084, which now sits on DeSantis' desk awaiting a signature. And if his previous comments are any indication, he will be pulling out his pen soon. "I know the Legislature is doing a bill to try to protect our meat," DeSantis said in February while visiting the South Florida State College Hardee Campus, "You need meat, and we're going to have meat in Florida." DeSantis added, "We're not going to have fake meat. That doesn't work." Cell-cultivated meat, to be clear, differs from traditional veggie burgers and meat alternatives like Impossible Burgers. As the Congressional Research Service (CRS) defines, Cell-cultivated meat "is developed in a lab, grown from a sample of animal cells that does not require the slaughter of animals." The development of cell-cultivated meat, the CRS explained, happens in five steps: the biopsy of animal cells, cell banking, cell growth, harvesting, and food processing. It's an industry that has heavy oversight in the U.S. by both the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). As the CRS noted, there are about 150 companies around the world involved in the cell-cultivated meat industry, 43 of which are based in the U.S. Of those 43, just two companies, Good Meat and Upside Food, have FDA approval in the U.S. While it's still a relatively small industry, it's one with major financial backing. According to the CRS, some $3 billion has been invested in its growth via private capital, and an additional $5 million has been issued via the National Science Foundation in research grants, along with an additional $12 million in grants by the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture. Florida, however, isn't alone in its pursuit to block the production and sale of this type of meat. As Fast Company reported, Tennessee is considering a similar bill that would impose a $1 million fine for selling cultivated meat. Alabama also passed a bill to ban the sale and manufacturing of it, making it a Class C felony. This means that if you're caught selling cell-cultivated meat there, you could wind up in prison for up to 10 years. EPISODE 21 DETAILS MYSTERIOUS DISEASE SHOWS UP IT TEXAS DAIRY CATTLE There is talk of an unknown illness in Texas dairy cattle, and has worried many dairy producers. What we do know about this situation is that The cause of this disease has not been determined yet, but, to date, dairies in Texas, Kansas, and New Mexico have reported cattle with symptoms. This disease has only affected dairy cattle so far. Diseased cattle show signs of a sudden drop in milk production, thickened colostrum-like milk, a drop in feed consumption, reduced rumen motility, tacky feces or diarrhea, and some fever. Some cows also developed pneumonia or mastitis. A portion of older, mid-lactation cattle are more severely affected. First lactation cows, heifers, and calves are usually not severely impacted. If you recognize these signs in your herd, contact your veterinarian immediately. The Texas Animal Health Commission, along with other organizations are investigating the epidemiology of this disease to determine how it spreads. Once this information is released, the next steps for dairy farms will be much clearer. The count is at 7,000 head and rising as the cleanup from the Lone Star State’s largest-ever wildfire continues; the Texas Dept. of Agriculture expects to add thousands more to the tally. While that’s a small fraction of Texas’s nation-leading 12-million-head herd, the local effects are devastating. The losses in Oklahoma are obviously fewer than Texas, but a multitude of donation centers have been set up just over the border in Oklahoma, including that of the Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association Foundation. The Canadian government announced an investment of C$1.7 million to Animal Health Canada (AHC) to support its role in preventing foreign animal diseases such as African Swine Fever (ASF) and Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD). Nearly C$1 million of the funds from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s African Swine Flu Industry Preparedness Program will help AHC coordinate prevention efforts against an African Swine Flu outbreak on Canada’s swine industry. Meanwhile, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is contributing nearly C$698,000 to AHC to support efforts over the next two years to boost preparedness for African Swine Flu and Foot and Mouth Disease. The money will fund surveillance data analysis, training, and the development of a vaccine strategy in the event of a Foot and Mouth Disease outbreak in Canada. The announcement comes as African Swine Flu continues to spread to new lands. Albania, for example, reported its first case last week, making it the 28th European country to confirm African Swine Flu since it was first found on the continent in 2007. BEEF PACKER MARGINS IMPROVE BUT REMAIN DEEPLY RED Despite some improvements, beef packer margins continue to struggle in 2024. According to the latest Sterling Beef Profit Tracker, packer margins for the week ending March 2 were -$105.69/head, versus a profit of $8.17/head a year ago. Higher feed costs, meanwhile, contributed to a $1.75/head loss for feedlot margins the week ending March 2, down from a $14.19 profit a week ago (but above early February’s $54.31 loss). A year ago, feedlot margin was a profit of $170.02/head. Annual projections still have feedlot margins at a $132.75 profit for 2024, down from $264.47 in 2023; packer margins, meanwhile, are currently estimated at a $36 loss this year, versus a flat $0.22 profit in 2023. Again, that is according to the Sterling Beef Profit Tracker. . COW COUNTRY NEWS Texas Panhandle Wildfires Have Burned Nearly 1.3 Million Acres In A Week The Texas Panhandle wildfires killed at least two people and burned nearly 1.3 million acres in their first week — and the situation isn't over. There are five active wildfires across the region, according to Texas A&M Forest Service. The largest of those is the Smokehouse Creek Fire in Hutchinson County, which alone has burned nearly 1.1 million acres and is the largest wildfire ever recorded in the state. Weather conditions across the state have made battling the blazes difficult. For days, the area has seen favorable fire weather – warmer temperatures, dry air, and strong winds – however cold fronts did pass through the area, bringing cooler temperatures that helped minimize wildfire impact. Texas Governor Greg Abbott said the fires have left exceptional damage, saying much of the affected areas are "completely gone" with "nothing left but ashes on the ground." Governor Abbott went on to say early assessments show that up to 500 structures have been destroyed adding that they will not know the true extent until later. Farmers and ranchers have suffered major losses. Officials said the fires have left "dead animals everywhere," with estimates that thousands of cattle – a vital industry in the region – will have died by the end of the disaster. Many in the agricultural community have rushed to help, offering land and free medication and labor to try and save animals. Researchers have already found that Texas' fire season has already grown by two months, and the season is only expected to undergo "lengthening and intensifying" as temperatures rise and extreme weather conditions such as drought and strong winds worsen. Many organizations have established themselves as collection points for funds from those who wish to help aid producers. VACCINATION PROGRAMS IN BEEF CATTLE Vaccines are pharmaceutical products that are intended to be administered to healthy animals to better prepare the animal's immune system to combat bacterial, viral, or protozoal health challenges. More simply stated, vaccines are intended to be used to prevent disease and generally do so through establishing and maintaining relatively high levels of circulating antibody titers. Because antibody titers wane over time, it is important that vaccines be administered and readministered (often referred to as "boostered") at the times necessary to result in antibody coverage throughout expected or potential exposure to disease-causing pathogens. It is critically important to recognize that vaccines are intended to be preventive tools, and the efficacy of any tool can be impacted by how it is used. Because vaccines are biological products, they are often susceptible to environmental abuse and exposure to conditions outside of certain optimal ranges. As such, vaccines should be stored, handled, and administered in ways that are described on the label using techniques that protect product efficacy. The product label contains the information necessary to ensure that product storage, handling, and administration practices do not limit or negate product efficacy. Deviations from such instructions may result in decreased product efficacy. In general, most vaccines should be refrigerated, but not frozen, and should remain within the desired refrigerated temperature range throughout storage, transportation, and up to the time of administration. The most common causes of decreased efficacy are storage, transportation, and handling abuse. Examples include not transporting vaccines in coolers, not storing vaccines in coolers on working days, and storing vaccines in refrigerators that do not maintain temperature within the necessary range. Vaccines that will be stored for extended periods of time should be stored only in refrigerators that have been verified to maintain the correct temperature range. Data-logging thermometers are an inexpensive but valuable investment. Vaccines, including vaccine vials and loaded syringes, should also be protected from direct exposure to sunlight. In addition, vaccines that have been exposed to the environment by puncturing the seal with a needle should not be stored and reused. If a needle has been inserted into the vial, the vaccine should be used during that working event, and any unused contents discarded per label directions. Storing previously opened vaccines allows for the potential growth of harmful microorganisms, and thus should be avoided in order to minimize the risk of unintentionally causing an adverse reaction or health event. Some vaccines require reconstitution by adding diluent to a dehydrated powder. All vaccines require mixing or agitating before administration. Mix vaccines gently by slowly swirling and inverting unless the label specifies otherwise. If reconstitution is required, reconstitute and mix only the amount of vaccine that will be used within an hour or less. Do not mix

EPISODE 173 DETAILS Up to 20 percent of a producer's income can come from the marketing of cull cows and bulls. But we need to manage them a certain way to maximize the profit potential, especially with markets being as high as they are. Michaela Clowser, The Director of Producer Education from the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association joins us to introduce the Right Way, Right Time program. Alabama has become the latest U.S. state to take legislative action against cultivated meat, with the Senate passing a bill to ban these proteins. The bill will now move to the House of Representatives, where it could become law. Many other states are trying to pass such legislation. Meat sales have been strong thus far in 2024 as beef margins shrink for the packer. We have all the details. RIGHT WAY, RIGHT TIME For cattle producers across the country, whether beef or dairy, cull cattle are part of doing business. Animals age, they no longer breed back, and their health deteriorates. Incorporating culling decision guidelines into an operation’s best management practices benefits both animal welfare as well as the producer’s bottom line. Animal well-being must be considered in every decision made throughout the animal’s life. Cull cattle, while being removed from the herd, are an untapped market for producers. It’s estimated that sales of market cows and bulls contribute up to 20% of operational gross revenue for beef operations.1 According to Derrell Peel with Oklahoma State University, “It is possible to increase the value of cull cows by 25 to 45 percent or more by improving cull cow management and marketing.” According to the 2022 National Beef Quality Audit (NBQA), the market cow and bull sector provides an alternative product and a secondary value to animals once their original purpose is no longer suitable. When it comes to product fabrication, market cows and bulls are typically associated with ground beef production. However, over time, the industry has realized that some market cows and bulls have the potential to yield valuable primals to be fabricated and sold as retail cuts and to the restaurant trade. Even though cull animals are often viewed as a loss, with effective planning, these animals can be a significant source of revenue and should not be overlooked. In essence, cull cattle are market cattle. This document addresses key problem areas, provides strategies for making timely culling decisions, and is designed to help producers examine the opportunity to capture more value through effective management regarding cull cattle. COW COUNTRY NEWS Alabama has become the latest US state to take legislative action against cultivated meat, with the Senate passing a bill to ban these proteins. The bill will now move to the House of Representatives, where it could become law. Senators in Alabama have passed a bill to ban cultivated meat from being sold. Sponsored by Senator Jack Williams, Senate Bill 23 makes it a Class C felony to manufacture, sell or distribute cultivated meat in the southern state. If you’re the owner of a restaurant hoping to offer cultivated meat to patrons, you could be convicted and your establishment could have its food safety permit suspended or even revoked. Alabama is far from the only state hoping to limit the cultivated meat sector. Florida has introduced two bills hoping to ban the production, sale, holding and distribution of cultured meat within the state. One of them suggests imposing criminal penalties – including facing misdemeanors of the second degree, fines of $500 to $1,000, and license suspensions or stop-sale orders – on anyone violating these rules. In Texas, Governor Greg Abbott signed a bill requiring clear labelling of plant-based and cultivated meat, seafood and egg products, while Nebraska’s Real MEAT Act would mandate the word “imitation” on alternative protein if passed. Policymakers in Tennessee are making their case for a $1M fine as part of its proposal to outlaw cultured meat. An Arizona House representative drafted HB 2244, a bill that would make it illegal to “intentionally misbranded or misrepresent” an alternative meat product as meat, while David Marshall went a step further with HB 2121, attempting to ban the sale or production of cultured meat. On similar grounds, Wisconsin State Assembly representative Peter Schmidt proposed two bills against alternative protein, one of which put restrictions on the labelling of cultivated meat. EPISODE 171 DETAILS Mandatory EID or Voluntary EID, Electronic Identification, that is the question, and that has everyone in the cattle sector buzzing. Recently the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, NCBA proposed various recommendations around mandatory electronic identification. After meetings last week in Orlando, Florida, it was voted to lessen the recommendations. It is important to note that nothing is in law yet. It is business as normal for cattle producers, but questions are still being raised, and rightfully so. Many producers across the country voiced their opinions, for and against. And equally important is the fact that producers voiced their opinions. Why are some in favor of mandatory EID, and why are some against it? Let’s start tackling this issue by visiting with the president of the United States Cattlemen's Association and the general manager of St. Onge Livestock in St. Onge, South Dakota. TRACEABILITY & ELECTRONIC ID’S According to the Tri-State Livestock News and the Rural Radio Network, the NCBA Cattle Health and Wellbeing Committee supported an amendment to a current policy at its recent convention. The wording that was added included NCBA supporting the adoption and implementation of electronic identification for interstate movement of all sexually intact cattle 18 months and older, which appears to jive with USDA’s proposed rule. According to the Bryce Doeschot story by Rural Radio Network, NCBA’s committee approved the following language: “NCBA supports adoption and implementation by the beef cattle industry of electronic identification (EID) devices for interstate movement of all cattle. (Sexually intact cattle > 18 months, rodeo and exhibition cattle, dairy cattle) Be it further resolved, NCBA will provide outreach and education to members following anticipated publication of USDA’s final rule requiring EID devices for interstate movement of all subject to the 2023 USDA Animal Disease Traceability rule (sexually intact cattle > 18 months, rodeo and exhibition cattle, dairy cattle). Be it further resolved, NCBA will support a private, industry managed, non-government Independent Database Collaborator (IDC) to serve as a hub for critical data, coordination, including data collection and housing for four data points (ID number, time, date and location); seamless coordination with USDA’s Animal Health Event Repository (AHER) and major animal identification program organizations; and a defined process for animal health officials to interact with the IDC in the event of a disease event of national significance.” In a radio interview, Jaclyn Wilson with Nebraska Cattlemen and NCBA said NCBA continues to support a voluntary ID system. Justin Tupper, President of the US Cattlemen’s Association and the manager of St. Onge Livestock, St. Onge, South Dakota said commerce will be hugely affected by a mandatory electronic tagging system, if USDA implements one. This is a concern of many cattle producers and auction market owners. Requiring electronic identification on all cattle would be “messy” said Tupper and he also pointed out that producers in his part of the country don’t want their data/ cattle numbers, etc., being made available to the public. “These big sales in the fall, we can barely find enough help to begin with,” he said. He added that cattle shrink and lose weight by putting them through a chute and checking tags or applying tags. “It would be unfeasible during the fall run, especially here,” he said. USCA supports producers’ right to use any kind of identification they choose to on a voluntary level, he said. R-CALF USA animal identification committee chairman Kenny Fox said that mandatory animal identification would open the door to more government mandates in the name of climate change. “They find out how many cattle we have, then they start talking about greenhouse gasses. In Ireland they are cutting the number of cattle allowed in the country,” he said. “Mandatory ID really infringes on our ability to raise cattle the way we want to,” he said. R-CALF USA supports the current rule, implemented in 2013, which allows producers the ability to choose the form of identification they like best, including the metal clip “bangs” tag. The Independent Beef Association of North Dakota said, in a news release that it supports voluntary EID that may be used by producers to better their return on their livestock, but does not support mandatory EID that passes on any extra cost or burden to the producer or infringe on their personal

EPISODE 15 DETAILS U.S. cattle inventory reaches 73-year low According to Meating Place, not many ranchers active today will remember the last time the U.S. cattle industry was this small. On January 1, 2024, the All Cattle and Calves inventory was 87.15 million head, the smallest total inventory since 1951. The All Cattle and Calves inventory is 1.9% smaller year over year and is the fifth consecutive year of declining cattle inventories, a total decrease of 7.65 million head or 8.1% since the most recent peak in 2019. The 2023 calf crop was 33.6 million head, down 2.5% year over year and the smallest calf crop since 2014. The January 1, 2024 beef cow herd inventory was 28.22 million head, down 2.5% year over year and a decrease of 3.47 million head or 10.9% lower, from the cyclical peak in 2019 (Table 1). The current beef cow inventory is the smallest beef cow herd since 1961. Table 1 shows that the top ten beef cow states, which currently represent 57.3% of total beef cows, accounted for 79.4% of the year over year decrease in total beef cow numbers and 67.7% of the decrease from 2019 to 2024. The inventory of beef replacement heifers on January 1, 2024 was 4.86 million head, down 1.4% year over year. However, the 2023 beef replacement heifer inventory was revised down by 4.5% from the initial value reported one year ago. Thus, the 2024 inventory of beef replacement heifers is down 11.4% from the 2022 inventory and is the smallest beef replacement heifer total since 1950. Since 2001, USDA has provided the portion of beef replacement heifers that are expected to calve in the coming year. The current inventory of these bred beef heifers is 3.05 million head, the smallest in the data back to 2001. The estimated supply of feeder cattle outside feedlots is calculated by summing the inventories of other heifers, steers >500 pounds and calves <500 pounds and subtracting the inventory of animals already in feedlots. On January 1, 2024, inventories of other heifers, steers, and calves under 500 pounds were all down year over year and feedlot inventories were up 1.6% leading to an estimated supply of feeder cattle outside feedlots of 24.2 million head, down 4.2% from one year ago. The estimated feeder supply can be consistently calculated back to 1972 and the 2024 value is the smallest in that 53-year period. The smaller cattle inventory is projected to result in a decrease of about five percent in total beef production to roughly 25.5 billion pounds in 2024. That’s three times as much beef as was produced in 1951, the last time the total cattle inventory was this small; impressive growth in productivity in the beef cattle industry. Nevertheless, the current ability to produce beef is smaller than the market potential today and the industry will look to rebuild numbers and increase beef production when conditions allow. Restaurant and retail partners remain 'under pressure' by animal rights extremists Any company involved in the production, processing, and retailing of dairy, meat, poultry, eggs, and seafood has at least one thing in common — the potential to be targeted by animal rights extremist organizations. These groups are opposed to people using animals for any purpose, including for food. Among the many tactics used to advance their goal of eliminating animal agriculture and taking animal products off of our plates, one is of primary concern to any consumer-facing food brand (and those that supply them) — pressure campaigns and pushing for “incremental changes” which they claim are in the name of animal welfare or sustainability. Legislative efforts have been a mainstay of extremist campaigns, but in recent years animal rights extremists have discovered a quicker way to exert influence on animal agriculture that cuts out the patchwork of state-level regulations on animal care dictated by ballot initiative campaigns. By pressuring restaurant, retail, and food service brands to adopt certain policies, these organizations are able to force the implementation of supplier requirements under the guise of animal welfare or sustainability — even if the policy does not truly benefit animals or the planet. The underlying motive of their requested changes or demands, which are almost always very costly for farmers to implement, is to make food production less efficient and increase food costs, forcing consumers to make tough choices about what they can afford. COW COUNTRY NEWS USDA Launches Remote Grading Pilot For Beef According to Beef Magazine, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced a pilot program to allow more cattle producers and meat processors to access better markets through the USDA's official beef quality grading and certification. The Remote Grading Pilot for Beef, developed by USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service, matches simple technology with robust data management and program oversight to allow a USDA grader to assess beef carcass characteristics and assign the official quality grade from a remote location, reducing costs and location as barriers to participation in voluntary grading services. In this pilot, trained plant employees capture specific images of the live animal and beef carcass. These images are submitted electronically to a USDA grader already stationed elsewhere in the U.S., likely located in another rural community, who reviews the images and accompanying plant records and product data, assigns the USDA Quality Grade and applicable carcass certification programs, and communicates the official grade back to the plant to be applied to the carcass. Plants can then use this information in their retail marketing and transmit carcass performance information back to producers. WHAT CAUSES SCOURS IN BEEF CATTLE/CALVES Clostridia-Enterotoxemia The most common form of Clostridium in cattle is caused by Clostridia perfringens. The gram-positive bacteria are a challenge due to its ability to form spores and lay dormant for long-periods of time. The bacteria reproduce by releasing spores into its environment (soil, feed, manure). The spores can even lay dormant in the animal’s intestine until opportunity presents itself. Infection takes place either through ingestion of spores or through an open wound. The most severe cases happen within the first month of a calf’s life, and can result in sudden death. Clinical Signs • Diarrhea - Bloody, Mucus Present, Bubbly • Dehydrated • Bloat • Blindness Prevention/Treatment: Prevention can be difficult due to the Clostridia spores being extremely durable and present almost everywhere. Complete cleanout and disinfection between calves is helpful, but not always effective. A good vaccination program will reduce clinical disease. The best method is to develop good gut health and the immune system of the calf. Farmatan has been shown to strengthen the intestinal wall, helping to prevent infection from taking hold. Coccidiosis Cattle are host to numerous species of Coccidia, a single-celled protozoal parasite. Infection and clinical symptoms can happen any time during a calf’s life, with the most severe reaction usually occurring between 3-6 weeks of age. The life-cycle of coccidia requires time to infect the intestine causing destruction of the mucosal and epithelial lining. The oocytes mature outside the host in warm, moist environments before being consumed, causing infection of a new host. Clinical Signs • Diarrhea - Watery, Bloody • Depression • Weight Loss Prevention/Treatment: Prevention of Coccidiosis is possible by keeping young calves separate from older animals, providing clean water and feed, and dry conditions. Isolation of infected animals is key to preventing transmission. Keeping the pen dry is the most important step a farmer/rancher can take in preventing Coccidiosis. ARIZONA MAY JOIN ITALY BY BANNING LAB GROWN MEAT FROM THE STATE According to Food Safety News, Arizona State Rep. David Marshall, R-Snowflake, and four co-sponsors have introduced House Bill 2121, prohibiting cell-cultured animal products. HB2121 prohibits anyone in Arizona from offering to sell or produce a cell-cultured animal product for human consumption. The state is authorized to impose a civil penalty on violators of not more than $25,000 in addition to attorney fees and costs with total actual damages not to exceed $100,000. Further, bill BB2121 allows a “person or organization whose business is adversely affected by a violation” to file a civil action for declaratory and injunctive relief and actual damages “against the person that violates this section.” The bill defines “cell-cultured animal products” as “any cultured animal tissue produced from in vitro animal cell cultures outside of the organism from which it is derived.” Read the entire article HERE NETFLIX FEEDS VIEWERS WITH VEGAN PROPAGANDA IN NEW SERIES SeaWest News reports a new Netflix series released New Year’s Day 2024 titled “You Are What You Eat: The Twin Experiment” follows the recent trend of documentaries and reality TV shows that push aside medical health experts and balanced discussion in favour of an agenda-driven campaign to help persuade viewers to adopt a vegan lifestyle. While promoted as a show offering science-based nutritional advice based on a clinical trial that compared the health of identical twins fed a vegan versus omnivore diet, the opening 30 seconds of the new Netflix series should be cause for concern, given its disclaimer: “The following series is designed to entertain and inform – not provide medical advice. You should always consult your doctor.” The second red flag – arguably the most concerning yet discreet – also appears in the opening credits: “In association with the Vogt Foundation,” it reads. This is the first and last time we hear about Vogt. Viewers may be interested to learn that the clinical trial conducted at Stanford University School of Medicine and the basis for this Netflix series was funded by the Vogt Foundation. This is quite a strong “association”. BEEF ANTITRUST LITIGATION GETS MORE ENTRIES According to Meating Place, The Big Four beef packing companies face yet another four lawsuits accusing them of conspiring to “fix, raise, stabilize and/or maintain the price of beef” sold to retailers since 2015, according to the documents in filed in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York last week. The New York cases mirror allegations leveled in lawsuits filed over the last few months in North Carolina and Illinois, and a case filed in 2022 by several quick-service restaurant chains. The Illinois case and those that were filed earlier have been transferred to the Minnesota District Court to be consolidated with other, similar antitrust cases in Multidistrict Litigation. All of those lawsuits resemble previous litigation against beef packers that garnered settlements in the tens of millions of dollars, at the same time that the Department of Justice and Congress scrutinized their practices. In the most recent New York-based cases, BJ's Wholesale Club Inc., Gordon Food Service Inc. and Glazer Foods Co., Quality Supply Chain Co-Op Inc. (QSCC) and Target Corp., all accused Cargill Inc., JBS S.A., National Beef Packing Co. and Tyson Foods Inc. of coordinating or manipulating beef prices to levels they would not have reached without the alleged actions, according to court documents. The separate filings also accuse several operating affiliates of the four processors of participating in the alleged violations of the Sherman Act through “anticompetitive means” concerning the price of boxed and case-ready meat. The four defendants sold approximately 80% of the more than 25 million pounds of fresh and frozen beef sold in the U.S. market in 2018 alone, each of the similar suits claim. The latest lawsuits also all cite efforts by the U.S. Department of Justice and USDA in 2020 to investigate allegations of beef pricing practices among the current defendants going back to at least the beginning of 2015. Check it out! ANTIBIOTICS 101 - TIPS FOR CHOOSING THE RIGHT TREATMENT FOR YOUR BEEF CATTLE When it comes to choosing the right antibiotic to treat cattle, it should be anything but a guessing game. While there are many factors that weigh into creating a treatment regimen, understanding the different classes of antibiotics and how they work is important to ensure your cattle are getting the best treatment response. A variety of infectious diseases can compromise cattle health, affecting growth, performance and operational profitability. Bovine Respiratory Disease (BRD) is one of the most common and costly. Prevention is the first line of defense against BRD. Having management protocols in place to reduce risk factors, along with a vaccine program, can help protect your herd. But when animals do get sick, it’s vital to identify and treat cattle as soon as possible with the right treatment to ensure the longevity of treatment options and reduce the risk of resistance. Not all antibiotics are created equal Every antibiotic has a different mix of characteristics. Knowing the antibiotic class and its characteristics when treating cattle gives a better understanding of how it works. Two of the most common antibiotic classes used to treat respiratory disease in cattle are macrolides and fluoroquinolones. Macrolides are time-dependent bacteriostatic antibiotics. This means they must maintain a minimal concentration that is greater than the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) over a period of time to overcome infectious bacteria. The MIC is the minimum amount of drug needed to suppress the replication of bacteria. The longer the antibiotic is present in the animal at or above the MIC level, the more it inhibits bacteria reproduction so allowing time for macrolides to work is critical. In certain “bug-drug” combinations such as tulathromycin and some isolates of Mannheimia haemolytica, macrolides can be bactericidal making initial concentrations and appropriate dosing more critical. Fluoroquinolones are concentration-dependent bactericidal antibiotics. This means they only need to reach concentrations above the MIC for very short periods to be effective. In some models, the higher the initial concentration of the fluoroquinolone above the MIC, the more effective the therapy. How to choose the correct antibiotic Understanding how an antibiotic works is one step to minimizing the risk of resistance. There are a few things producers should ask themselves when choosing an antibiotic to make the right choice for their operation: Do I know the health history of the cattle being treated? If there was a metaphylaxis treatment with one class of antibiotic, using a different class if subsequent treatment is required may be warranted. Do I know the weight of the animal being treated? Remember when administering antibiotics, the dose is based on weight of the animal. Getting an accurate weight on each animal being treated is important to the success rate of antibiotic therapy. What is the causative pathogen? Necropsies are an excellent tool to understand what bacteria your cattle are challenged with. Cultures can help determine what bacteria is affecting your herd and the best treatment for that strain. Have I read the product label? Lucky 7 Angus Ranch is selling their spring calving Oklahoma cows at public auction, January 8th at Ogallala Livestock Auction in Ogallala, Nebraska. AGRIDIME According to articles in the Bismarck Tribune and Ag Week, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, which filed a civil lawsuit against the company on Dec. 11, has labeled the operation a Ponzi scheme, in which Agridime was using investor money to pay existing investors and commissions to salespeople rather than using new money to do what it said it would — purchase, feed and care for cattle to be finished and sold to consumers as beef. The SEC has received a temporary restraining order, including an asset freeze, on the company owned by Joshua Link of Arizona and Jed Wood of Texas, through Jan. 9, pending a hearing on Jan. 5. As of Sept. 5, 2023, Agridime-held cattle contracts required payment to investors of $123 million in principal, plus $24 million in guaranteed "profits." The company, as of Sept. 30, 2023, had less than $1.5 million and insufficient operating revenues, the SEC complaint said. Carl Karpinski, enforcement attorney for the North Dakota Securities Department, said there is no confirmed tally yet on investment losses in North Dakota. But he said the eventual number may be significant. "North Dakota is one of the most — if not the most — affected states" in the nation, he said. While the SEC complaint did not go into specifics about the cattle the company did purchase, other than specifying that "Defendants did not buy the number of cattle required to fulfill the Company's obligations under the Cattle Contracts," Agridime was licensed as a livestock agent in North Dakota. Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring announced on Dec. 15 that it no longer will be licensed in the state. “Agridime was licensed in North Dakota,” Goehring said in a statement. “Their renewal was pending based on issues with bonding. The actions taken by the SEC will support our denial of their license and we will issue a cease-and-desist order, effective (Dec. 15), to prevent further purchase of livestock.” Karpinski said the Securities Department is not working on the cattle sales side of the case, though the North Dakota Department of Agriculture and U.S. Department of Agriculture are involved. Ellingson encouraged producers involved in the case to contact the Stockmen's Association at 701-223-2522. HOW AGRIDIME OPERATED The SEC complaint said Agridime raised $191 million from more than 2,100 investors in at least 15 states since January 2021. Instead of using investor money as advertised, the SEC filing said Agridime has used at least $58 million from Dec. 1, 2022, to Sept. 30, 2023, in investor funds from new cattle contracts to make principal and profit payments to previous investors. Agridime would sell investors cattle contracts for $2,000 per calf. The company would then promise to buy the cattle back a year later at return rates of 15% to 32%, the complaint says. Agridime paid commissions to salespeople, typically 10%, for each cattle contract sold, which also was not disclosed to investors. The SEC documents say that through May 2023, commissions paid exceeded $11.1 million in total, including "at least $5.6 million to a salesperson in North Dakota," $1.3 million to Link and his wife and $1.3 million to Wood. By using the funds to make previous investor payments and to pay commissions, "Agridime has not purchased enough cattle to fulfill its Cattle Contracts. Agridime's investors, therefore, do not actually invest in specific, identifiable animals. Instead, the success of their investments depends on the success of Agridime's purported cattle operation, including its ability to attract new investors." Agridime had operations in Texas, Arizona, Kansas, North Dakota and "other states," court documents said. In North Dakota, Securities Commissioner Karen Tyler on May 24, 2023, ordered a cease and desist order against Agridime and Link. Neither Agridime nor Link were registered as an issue-dealer or a broker-dealer in North Dakota, the cease and desist order said. Despite that, Link on Sept. 7, 2022, sold an investment contract to a North Dakota resident for $250,000, the order said. The SEC complaint said Agrid
