EPISODE 214 DETAILS Cattle Industry Top News Headlines, Christmas Gift Ideas, Market Outlooks Top Cattle Industry Headlines U.S. Tightens Import Restrictions After Screwworm Detection The USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has restricted animal imports from Mexico after detecting New World screwworm (NWS) in a cow in Chiapas, Mexico. NWS larvae infest living tissue in warm-blooded animals, causing severe infections. Producers along the U.S.-Mexico border should monitor livestock and pets for signs such as draining wounds or discomfort and report any suspected cases to a veterinarian immediately. To combat the pest's spread, APHIS is deploying sterile flies and intensifying efforts in Central America. "With this detection, we will intensify measures to protect American agriculture," said Dr. Rosemary Sifford, U.S. Chief Veterinary Officer. NWS has recently spread northward due to increased cattle movement, disrupting biological barriers in the region. The USDA continues collaborating with Central American partners to contain and eradicate this threat. Mexico Threatens Trade war If Trump Implements Tariffs Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has criticized President-elect Donald Trump's proposed 25% tariff on Mexican imports, warning it could spark inflation, harm cross-border businesses, and lead to a trade war. Trump announced the tariffs as part of his immigration and drug enforcement policies, citing record illegal crossings. Sheinbaum, in office for just seven weeks, highlighted the risks in a letter to Trump, emphasizing the potential impact on industries like automotive and U.S. meat exports. According to the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF), duty-free trade with Mexico has been crucial for export growth, with U.S. beef exports up 13% and pork exports up 7% year-over-year through September. Sheinbaum urged a meeting with Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to address trade and migration concerns. Meanwhile, Trump defended the tariffs, linking them to stricter immigration and drug policies. New Tariffs May Provide Financial Boost for U.S. Food Producers The Trump administration’s plan to impose a 25% tariff on imports from North American neighbors and China could yield unexpected benefits for U.S. food producers, according to J.P. Morgan analyst Ken Goldman. While tariffs are expected to raise inflation and food prices, retaliatory measures could reduce global demand for U.S. crops like corn, soybeans, and wheat. This decline may lower domestic crop prices, offering cost savings to U.S. producers and potentially boosting profit margins. Goldman noted that U.S. manufacturers, less reliant on imported crops, could see these savings offset the negative impacts of tariffs on other goods. Tyson To Close Beef/Pork Facility In Kansas Tyson Foods announced the closure of its beef and pork non-harvest processing facility in Emporia, Kansas, impacting 809 employees. The plant is set to shut down by February 14, as part of Tyson’s strategy to consolidate operations and boost efficiency. Operations will shift to Tyson’s Holcomb plant near Garden City, according to company officials. Tyson stated it is working with state and local agencies to support affected employees. Despite the closure, Tyson continues to employ over 5,000 team members at its other Kansas facilities. 2025 Hot Culinary Trends Revealed The National Restaurant Association’s 2025 Culinary Forecast highlights East Asian flavors as a major trend. Korean, Vietnamese, and Filipino cuisines ranked highest in the survey of nearly 300 U.S. food industry professionals. These cuisines also dominated the ingredients, flavors, and condiments categories. “With diners seeking sustainable choices and bold global flavors, restaurants are offering locally sourced ingredients and creative menu options,” said Chad Moutray, Vice President of the Association. Other key trends include: Sustainability and local sourcing Mushrooms Hot honey Fermented and pickled foods Value-focused menu deals The report reflects evolving consumer priorities, including convenience, creativity, and efficiency, as operators adapt to economic and labor challenges. Rollins, a Texas native with strong ties to agriculture and conservative advocacy, previously led the Texas Public Policy Foundation, championing causes like school choice and fossil fuels. If confirmed, she will become the second woman to head the USDA, following Ann Veneman under President George W. Bush. With a $200 billion budget and nearly 100,000 employees, the USDA oversees programs like SNAP, WIC, and school meals. Rollins may also tackle the reauthorization of the massive farm bill, which funds farmer safety nets, rural development, and nutrition programs. Her leadership could drive Trump’s agenda to streamline federal bureaucracy, enforce tariffs, and shape U.S. agricultural policy amid challenges like trade disputes and global competition. Ep 212USDA ELECTRONIC ID TAGS EXPLAINED & TOP SIMMENTAL GENETICS
We dive in the rules and regulations of USDA’s Electronic ID Tag Rule. We hear how to get some of the top Simmental and SimAngus Genetics. Plus market recaps, horses for sale and lots more on this all new episode of the Ranch It Up Radio Show. Be sure to subscribe on your favorite podcasting app or on the Ranch It Up Radio Show YouTube Channel. EPISODE 212 DETAILS USDA ELECTRONIC ID TAGS EXPLAINED & TOP SIMMENTAL GENETICS USDA Electronic ID Tag Rules Explained USDA EID Tag Rule Sparks Questions Producers are still confused about how to use the new USDA EID Tags, where to get them, and wondering if there are enough in circulation. Justin Tupper, President of the U.S. Cattlemen's Association and owner/manager of St. Onge Livestock in St. Onge, South Dakota helps explain the rules and shares his experience and thoughts on the program. As the leading provider of EID tags and readers through the Allflex® brand, Merck Animal Health wants to support cattle producers in their decision-making with the expertise and solutions they need. Key Distinctions With Official ID Rules The new policy only applies to interstate movement. Other exemptions include direct-to-slaughter cattle and sexually intact cattle (and bison) under 18 months of age. Animals that will need electronically and visually readable tags when they enter interstate movement include: Sexually intact cattle and bison 18 months or older All dairy cattle, including beef-on-dairy crossbred animals Cattle and bison of any age used for rodeo, recreation events, shows or exhibitions Another important detail: Visual ear tags applied before Nov. 5, 2024, will be recognized as official IDs for the life of the animal. They’ll be grandfathered in and will not need an EID. Easing The Financial Burden Producers and the livestock industry have raised concerns about the potential cost burden of the new tagging policies. Congress recently directed USDA-APHIS to allocate no less than $15 million for the cost of tags and related infrastructure to help offset those costs.2 Producers may be able to access EID tags for free via their state veterinarian. They can apply those tags at approved tagging sites. Producers can also buy EIDs directly from a distributor, online vendor or local dealer and apply the tags themselves. In addition, producers are not required to invest in tag-reading hardware or software, unless they choose to do so for herd management and record keeping. The EID tags can be used the same way as visual tags. Addressing Data Privacy Concerns EID tags are encoded with a number that identifies the animal, but no owner-specific information. The data associated with the tags will be stored in various federal and state databases. Access to that data will also be restricted to the state and federal officials responsible for managing high-impact diseases of the cattle industry. USDA agnostic on EID tags USDA isn’t mandating or recommending any one brand of ear tag. Tags must be approved by the department and will be imprinted with the Official Eartag Shield. The Allflex radio frequency ID (RFID) tags offered by Merck Animal Health meet these standards. They use a short-read range that doesn’t interfere with radio frequencies commonly found in livestock operations. Allflex tags do not include any global positioning system (GPS) capabilities. Producers also use these RFID tags to track health protocols, performance, reproduction and genetics. The new tagging requirements are intended to bolster the industry’s tracing capabilities in the event of a disease outbreak. Contact your Merck Animal Health representative or tag supplier to find out how Allflex tags can help you comply with these rules while managing your beef or dairy operation more efficiently. And there will always inevitably be a few open cows. But should we sell these open cows or keep them? Dr. Bob Weaber with Kansas State University joins us discussing various different ways to manage our cull cows for potentially capitalize on the highest profits Latest Beef Industry News Australia & New Zealand Meat Industries Brace for Possible Trump Tariffs Introduction: As Donald Trump’s potential return to the White House stirs conversations around economic policies, the agricultural sector, particularly animal agriculture, is bracing for potential impacts. Among the most discussed issues are Trump's proposed tariffs, which range from 10% to 20% on all U.S. imports and up to 60% on Chinese imports. These tariffs could have significant consequences for U.S. consumers and meat exporters like Australia and New Zealand, who have capitalized on increased demand following U.S. herd liquidations. Trump's Proposed Tariffs on U.S. Imports Trump’s proposed tariffs could raise prices on imported meat, directly impacting U.S. consumers. Australia and New Zealand, which have become key suppliers of beef to the U.S., would be particularly affected by these policies. Any increase in tariffs could result in reduced competitiveness for these exporters, potentially reducing meat supply in the U.S. market and driving prices higher for consumers. Industry Reactions and Concerns Nathan Guy, independent chair of the Meat Industry Association of New Zealand, expressed concern in a recent interview. He stated that the industry would need to "breathe through it" over the coming months and adapt as the situation unfolds. Guy warned that new tariffs on New Zealand beef could ultimately "hurt the U.S. consumer even harder because they're going to have to pay more for the [beef] we produce." Similarly, Stefan Vogel, general manager of RaboResearch Australia and New Zealand, highlighted in an interview with Weekly Times Now the potential strain these tariffs could place on meat industry players globally. The ripple effects could extend beyond beef to include lamb and other meats, affecting prices and availability for consumers across various markets. Economic Impact on Animal Agriculture The proposed tariffs would likely lead to shifts in supply and demand within the animal agriculture industry, impacting everything from feed prices to livestock management strategies. U.S. producers may see opportunities for increased market share, but these gains could be offset by rising costs and logistical challenges. Conclusion Trump's proposed tariffs bring uncertainties for the global meat trade, potentially raising prices for U.S. consumers and creating challenges for exporters. As animal agriculture stakeholders prepare for possible policy changes, close attention to tariff developments and adaptive strategies will be key to navigating this evolving landscape. Appeals Court Decides Whether Tyson Owes Ghost Cattle Operator A federal appeals court sided with a Washington district court’s ruling that Tyson Fresh Meats did not owe Cody Allen Easterday any money for alleged breach-of-contract claims. Easterday is currently serving a 11-year prison sentence for defrauding the company of $244 million in a ghost cattle scheme. Companies related to his operation had repaid at least $63 million to Tyson as of February 2023. He claimed Tyson owed him approximately $100 million for using his likeness on meat product labels in Japan. USDA Says Hog Had Wild H5N1, Utah Reports First Dairy Outbreak The avian flu found in a backyard hog in Oregon appears to be a strain of H5N1 contracted directly from wild birds, rather than the strain that crosses over from birds to dairy cattle, according to top USDA officials. Meanwhile, Utah has confirmed its first outbreak in dairy cattle, with infections discovered on eight farms in Cache County. The appearance followed the culling in early October of the entire flock of 1.8 million chickens after the virus was discovered on a Utah poultry facility for the first time since 2022. Latest Beef Industry News European Union Makes Decision On Cultivated Meat Ban The European Commission criticized Hungary’s proposed ban on cultured meat, calling it “unjustified” and potentially disruptive to the EU single market. “No lab-grown meat products are currently authorized in the EU, making a ban premature,” stated the Commission, adding that it could interfere with the EU’s scientific approval process for novel foods. Following a TRIS assessment, Sweden, Lithuania, the Netherlands, and Czechia also opposed the ban, citing risks to market unity if cultured meat is later approved. The Netherlands further argued that cultured meat could benefit farmers, offering a future-proof alternative for the agricultural sector. Hungary can now revise its draft ban in response to these comments. Vilsack Calls For Congress To Act On Farm Bill Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack is urging Congress to pass the overdue Farm Bill. “We need a Farm Bill now,” he emphasized in a call with American Farmland Trust, noting limited time left this fall for a bipartisan solution or at least an extension of the current bill. Though hopeful for a five-year bill by year-end, Vilsack warns delays could disrupt 2025 farm financing. The 2018 Farm Bill, temporarily extended, expired on Sept. 30, putting pressure on Congress to act before the November elections. NCBA Criticizes Dietary Guidelines Recommendations The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) criticized the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee's recent push to replace high-quality proteins like beef with plant-based options. NCBA’s Ethan Lane called the suggestions "out-of-touch" and “dangerous,” pointing out that beans and lentils can't fully replace the nutrients beef provides. Dr. Shalene McNeill, NCBA’s Executive Director of Nutrition Science, emphasized that while beef makes up only 5% of calories in the American diet, it supplies over 5% of essential nutrients like iron, B12, and protein. These recommendations, part of the 2025-2030 Dietary Guidelines process, will be reviewed by USDA and HHS. Arkansas Beef Council Names Best Burger The Arkansas Beef Council announced Bailey’s Family Restaurant in Cave City as the winner of the inaugural Arkansas’s Best Burger Contest with their Caveman Burger. Selected from over 2,400 nominations across 410+ burgers, the contest’s top ten burgers — two from each of the state’s five regions — were judged on taste, appearance, cooking, and overall impression by an anonymous panel. The Caveman Burger stands out with a massive two-pound beef patty on a nine-inch bun, available as a double with optional cheese or bacon. Arkansas Secretary of Agriculture Wes Ward noted that the contest highlighted Arkansans' love for quality beef and local restaurants. The Arkansas Beef Council continues to support beef’s image and Arkansas's cattle industry through promotional and research efforts. Canadian Herd To Stabilize In 2025 The Canadian cattle herd is forecast to sustain the long-term trend of contraction to begin 2025 but will begin to stabilize by year’s end on improved feed pricing and availability. A smaller calf crop will be produced based on 2024 breeding stock but heifer retention should improve if feed conditions continue to remain stable or improve. Higher heifer retention coupled with a smaller calf crop will see lowered beef production and slaughter in 2025. As a percent of production, Canadian beef exports are forecast to remain strong while imports are forecast to soften on weakened consumer demand. For the complete article, click HERE. Upside Foods, based in Berkeley, California, sued Florida in August, arguing the law, effective July 1, is unconstitutional. The company has publicly opposed the law, including a "Freedom of Food" event featuring its cultivated chicken. The lawsuit continues as the court addresses the ban's constitutionality. EPISODE 51 DETAILS USDA Proposed Rules For Alternative Marketing Agreements For Fed Cattle USDA Works For Fairer Fed Cattle Markets During a Farmer and Ranchers in Action event at the White House on Oct. 8, Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack announced several steps to create transparency and fairer trading in the cattle markets. Vilsack said the new actions are part of the effort under the Packers & Stockyards Act of 1921 to enhance price discovery in cattle markets. The agency released a report showing unjust and anticompetitive pricing strategies that exist in today’s beef market. For years, USDA has fielded complaints from producers around beef packers using reported regional cash or spot prices as base prices for fed cattle formula pricing agreements, commonly known as Alternative Marketing Agreements (AMAs). The USDA reports this is especially prominent in the fed cattle market as the share of cattle purchased by beef packers using AMAs increased to more than 70 percent while the average share of cattle sold in the negotiated cash spot market fell below 20 percent nationally. USDA is issuing an Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPR) to seek comment on several possible interventions to develop new benchmarks as AMA base prices and approaches to trading when using benchmarks. The public is invited to comment on this proposed rulemaking by visiting Regulations.gov and commenting on the “Price Discover and Competition in Markets for Fed Cattle”. Comments will close on Dec. 10, 2024. Ohio Battles Alternative Meat Labels Ohio Is The Latest State To Debate Alternative Meat Labels According to MeatingPlace.Com, Two legislators in Ohio introduced legislation to regulate the labeling of alternative meat products. House Bill 661, which Republican State Representatives Roy Klopfenstein and Jack Daniels introduced, would deem alternative proteins as “misbranded” if the packaging included the “identifying meat terms” of beef, wing, cold cut and other animal protein terms. Only if the packaging also included such words as “imitation,” “fake” or “vegan” would it be eligible for sale in Ohio. The bill would also prevent school boards from purchasing misbranded alternative-meat products. If a food manufacturer’s products were classified as “misbranded” under the bill, companies could face civil penalty of up to $10,000 for each day a violation occurs. Read the entire article HERE. Latest Beef Industry News Strike Shuts Ports On East, Gulf Coasts Agricultural exports screeched to a halt Tuesday as dock workers walking off the job on the East and Gulf coasts, after the International Longshoremen’s Association’s contract expired Tuesday at midnight. The poultry industry — concentrated in southeastern states and still reeling from Hurricane Helene — could be hardest hit in the meat sector, but extended port closures would quickly be felt nationwide, with 13% of beef, 15% of poultry, and 25% of pork production exported annually. Erin Borror, U.S. Meat Export Federation vice president for economic analysis, said that the strike-hit Eastern and Southern ports are responsible for at least $100 million a week worth of pork and beef exports, with a typically faster pace of outbound shipments in the fourth quarter. Senators Introduce Bill To Amend Federal Meat Inspection Act U.S. Sen. Peter Welch, D-Vt., along with Sens. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Cory Booker, D-N.J., introduced the Livestock Owned by Communities to Advance Local (LOCAL) Foods Act. The legislation aims to amend the Federal Meat Inspection Act of 1906 to support small-scale meat producers in rural areas by updating the "personal-use exemption." The bill would allow consumers to purchase live animals from local producers and designate agents for slaughter and processing, easing bottlenecks caused by the limited number of USDA-inspected slaughterhouses. The move is intended to help small farmers avoid delays and continue providing locally sourced food to their communities. Welch said the legislation would cut through regulations that favor large-scale operations, ensuring small producers remain competitive. The bill is supported by several farming organizations, including the Farm Action Fund and the National Family Farm Coalition, as a way to boost local food access and protect farmers’ rights to sell directly to consumers. Cheap Burgers Becoming Harder To Find According to a report from Bloomberg, the rising cost of beef is pushing burgers out of reach for many Americans, as the price of fast food continues to climb. In the second quarter of 2024, the average fast-food burger cost $8.41, a 16% increase from five years ago, according to Technomic’s Ignite Menu data. Even McDonald’s has seen prices surge, with a Big Mac averaging $5.29 — up 21% since 2019. The report said the root of the issue lies in dwindling cattle numbe

EPISODE 49 DETAILS Deal Reached On Sale Of Ponzi Scheme Cattle Company Ponzi Scheme Cattle Company, Agridime, Has Been Sold Ponzi Scheme Cattle Company Agridime Sells To North Dakota Investor North Dakota rancher Wylie Bice and his partner are set to acquire Agridime, a beef marketing company exposed as a Ponzi scheme, for approximately $15.7 million. Now operating under the name American Grazed Beef, Agridime sells beef and other products directly to consumers online. Bice’s company, Sheer Marketing LLC, has already begun purchasing calves from North Dakota and other states for processing into steaks next year. A court hearing to approve the sale is scheduled for October 7, with objections allowed until October 2. Agridime, which owes millions to investors after collapsing due to its Ponzi scheme structure, has been under the supervision of a court-appointed receiver, Stephen Fahey. The SEC alleges Agridime raised $191 million from over 2,100 investors, with North Dakota investors owed about $40 million. The purchase includes the company’s frozen meat supply, equipment, and land in Kansas and Illinois, some of which may be sold. Bice aims to restore cattle processing to five or six semi-loads per week by next year and has seen a 38% rise in direct sales since the start of the year. For the complete article, click HERE. EPISODE 204 DETAILS Program Cattle, Beef Checkoff, Beef Industry News Cattle Buyers Continue To Recommend Program Feeder Cattle Program Feeder Cattle, Buying & Selling Tips Many buyers are recommending that those producers that are enrolling in various programs to assist in marketing feeder cattle need to continue with those programs because they could be setting the benchmark of prices in the future. Mike Bolinger with Superior Livestock joins us again discussing program cattle, his thoughts on the Beef Checkoff and other various industry topics. Latest Beef Checkoff & Industry News Export Federation Warns Of Port Strike Impacts Of Beef Exports are heavily dependent on the Eastern ports threatened by an Oct. 1 strike deadline, but the ramifications of a halt in shipments would be serious for beef and pork industries, too, the U.S. Meat Export Federation warned late last week. USMEF President and CEO Dan Halstrom said, “The three big West Coast ports are the leading outlets for U.S. beef and pork exports. That doesn’t mean the East and Gulf coast isn’t important. If we look at total waterborne exports of pork, about 45% of those go through the East and Gulf coast ports, and beef side about 30% of the waterborne exports.” He pointed in particular to “quite a high percentage of very high value chilled beef that goes out from the East Coast in particular for destinations like Europe and the Middle East. He said we can’t overstate the importance of the East Coast and Gulf Coast ports. Even though the West Coast is larger, still a very significant quantity is exported through the East and Gulf coasts. Halstrom said any halt in port activity “will back up the supply chain immediately,: and redirecting meat exports to the West Coast is “by no means a long-term solution at all,” because a vast flow of grain and non-farm commodities and goods would also be left without port capacity. He said we’re challenged to export all of our products today using all the ports, so we cannot afford a shutdown in any part of the supply chain. Plant Based Diets Are More Expensive Originally posted in Alt-Meat and then again in MeatlingPlace.Com, consuming a plant-based diet that is nutritionally equivalent to one that includes animal proteins is “considerably” (34% to 45%) more expensive than an omnivorous diet, putting numbers to one complaint that’s been voiced about plant-based diets for years, according to new research from New Zealand’s Massey University. As published in the journal “Frontiers in Nutrition,” the article reviews recent modeling studies using Linear Programming to determine the respective roles of animal- and plant-sourced foods in developing a least-cost diet in the United States and New Zealand. The abstract said that “In both economies, least-cost diets were found to include animal-based foods, such as milk, eggs, fish and seafood, to meet the energy and nutrient requirements of healthy adults at the lowest retail cost. The article said , the costliest culprits in transitioning from an animal- and plant-containing least-cost diet to a plant-only based least-cost diet are mostly vitamins and minerals. In conclusion, “Modeling of least-cost diets that consist exclusively of plant-based foods is feasible, but at a higher daily diet cost, and these diets are often close to limiting several key nutrients. 2024 Stockmanship & Stewardship Tour, Hamburg, New York The Stockmanship & Stewardship Tour is coming to Hamburg, New York and surrounding states October 25 - 26 at the Agriculture Discovery Center In Hamburg, New York. Plus updates on beef imports, mandatory country of origin labeling, markets, sales and so much more on this all new episode of the Ranch It Up Radio Show. Be sure to subscribe on your favorite podcasting app or on the Ranch It Up Radio Show YouTube Channel. EPISODE 203 DETAILS Keep or Sell Heifer Calves, Beef Imports & MCOOL Feeder Heifers: Sell Now or Hold Sell or Background Heifer Calves, The Pros & Cons Feeder cattle prices have been outstanding all summer long. And many producers are faced with the dilemma of selling heifers and turning the cash or keeping heifers to go back into the cow herd. Mike Bolinger with Superior Livestock joins us discussing the pros and cons of both options, where we are at in the cowherd inventory and how beef imports could affect prices of beef. Latest Beef Checkoff & Industry News Beef Producers Ask For Fed Support Of MCOOL According to MeatingPlace.com, nearly three dozen groups associated with beef production, ranching and the environment signed on to a letter sent to the U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai, asking for her support to restore mandatory country of origin labeling (MCOOL) for beef. Producer organizations, including Ranchers-Cattlemen Action Legal Fund United Stockgrowers of America (R-CALF USA) regularly endeavor to keep MCOOL issues part of the national legislative conversation. This, although the World Trade Organization ruled in 2014 that such meat labeling law violates U.S. international trade obligations by discriminating against Canadian cattle and pigs and Mexican cattle. Referencing a letter that Tai had published in the British newspaper Financial Times, in which she said she was committed to “meet working people where they are, redesigning the incentive structure so that communities are not pitted against each other,” the letter said, “This is precisely the help that ranchers and consumers need and consistent with your comments. We respectfully request that you issue a statement to lawmakers regarding your office’s position as to whether the United States has the authority to reinstate mandatory country of origin labeling for beef in the face of the substantive trade reforms you are seeking, including at the World Trade Organization.” The letter and a list of the signing organizations are available HERE. Drought Continues for Oklahoma Drought conditions have increased rapidly in Oklahoma in recent weeks. The latest Drought Monitor shows that 78.58 percent of Oklahoma is abnormally dry or in some stage of drought. Because of the dry conditions, very little wheat has been planted at this time or it has been “dusted in” to await hoped-for rain. Prospects for winter wheat grazing are decreasing with each passing week. Wheat planted after mid-September will have less time to grow sufficient forage for winter grazing — assuming moisture is forthcoming. The start of winter grazing will be pushed back, and stocking rates will likely be reduced due to less available forage through the winter. Oklahoma range and pasture conditions have deteriorated rapidly in the last month, with the percentage of pastures rated poor to very poor increasing from 19% to 34% in the last four weeks. Going into the winter in drought is ominous and raises concerns about 2025 forage prospects. Fortunately, hay supplies are much improved this year, which will help with winter feed needs. The combination of this year’s hay production and very large carryover stocks (May 1) from last year, leaves Oklahoma with record large total hay supplies this year — over 20% larger than the 10-year average. The lack of wheat stocker demand and the beginning of the fall run of calves is putting pressure on cattle auction prices. Many unweaned calves are beginning to show up at auctions. Unweaned calves take a bigger discount, especially in the fall as variable weather increases animal health challenges and risks. There is time to add value to calves to be marketed this fall. Weaning (minimum 45 days), vaccinations, castration and dehorning will add value to calves marketed 45-90 days from now. Even better is documenting these practices in a certified preconditioning program that provides additional assurance to buyers. Many years of data confirms that preconditioned calves will bring premiums over unweaned calves. The 45-day cut-off for most fall Oklahoma Quality Beef Network (OQBN) sales is rapidly approaching in late September. Producers can find the sale schedule, program and sign-up information at Oklahoma Quality Beef Network, Oklahoma State University. In action at the end of its September 4-5 meeting in Denver, Colorado, the Beef Promotion Operating Committee (BPOC) approved Checkoff funding for a total of 12 “Authorization Requests” – or grant proposals – for the fiscal year beginning October 1, 2024. The committee, which includes 10 producers and importers from the Cattlemen’s Beef Board and 10 producers from the Federation of State Beef Councils, also recommended full Cattlemen’s Beef Board approval of a budget amendment to reflect the split of funding between budget categories affected by their decisions. Eight contractors and two subcontractors brought 12 Authorization Requests worth approximately $46.8 million to the BPOC this week, approximately $8.8 million more than the funds available from the CBB budget. “We’re consistently impressed with the proposals that our contractors bring forward each year, and choosing which initiatives to fund is a real challenge,” said Andy Bishop, CBB and BPOC chair. “Our budget amounts to slightly less each year because of inflation. To put it in perspective, a dollar in 1985 is worth just 35 cents¹ today. That means we simply don’t have the buying power that we had when this program first started. “As we expected, the Authorization Requests we reviewed this week were full of new ideas and innovative approaches supporting the Checkoff’s core programs of research, promotion, foreign marketing, industry information, consumer information and producer communications. Our committee did a great job of balancing our budget and distributing our limited funds in what we believe is the most optimal way possible. I personally thank our contractors and committee members for all their hard work, and I look forward to future Checkoff successes throughout FY25.” In the end, the BPOC approved proposals from eight national beef organizations for funding through the FY25 Cattlemen’s Beef Board budget, as follows: American Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture - $600,000 Cattlemen’s Beef Board - $1,800,000 Foundation for Meat and Poultry Research and Education - $600,000 Meat Import Council of America / Northeast Beef Promotion Initiative - $900,000 National Cattlemen’s Beef Association - $25,700,000 National Institute for Animal Agriculture - $95,000 North American Meat Institute - $280,000 United States Meat Export Federation - $8,000,000 Broken out by budget component – as outlined by the Beef Promotion and Research Act of 1985 – the FY25 Plan of Work for the Cattlemen’s Beef Promotion and Research Board budget includes: $9,120,000 for promotion programs, including beef and veal campaigns focusing on beef’s nutritional value, eating experience, convenience, and production. $8,600,000 for research programs focusing on pre- and post-harvest beef safety, scientific affairs, nutrition, sustainability, product quality, culinary technical expertise, and consumer perceptions. $7,500,000 for consumer information programs, including Northeast influencer outreach and public relations initiatives; national consumer public relations, including nutrition-influencer relations and work with primary- and secondary-school curriculum directors nationwide to get accurate information about the beef industry into classrooms of today’s youth. Additional initiatives include outreach and engagement with food, culinary, nutrition and health thought leaders; media and public relations efforts; and supply

In light of of this information and with the lack of producers retaining heifers, many have speculated that there will be on pace to import 1 billions pounds of beef from both Australia and Canada. Second-quarter imports totaled 1.012 billion pounds, a year-over-year increase of 12 percent. Leading that increase were imports from Australia, up nearly 59 percent year over year. The second-highest increase by volume in quarterly imports was from Uruguay, up almost 25 million pounds over the same period last year; Argentina sent nearly 13 million pounds more compared to last year. The chart below shows year-to-date imports through June for the top five suppliers. Imports from Australia continue to make up a much larger share of total imports compared to a year ago. Latest Beef Industry News USDA To Require More Proof For Animal-Raising And Environmental Claims Companies that tout certain animal-raising and environmental claims on meat and poultry labels will need more documentation, according to updated guidelines from the USDA. The agency said the move aligns with efforts to protect consumers from misleading labels and supports President Biden's Executive Order on Promoting Competition in the American Economy. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack emphasized that these updates promote transparency and fairness, ensuring that consumers can trust the labels on meat products. The guidelines “strongly encourage” third-party certification to validate claims such as "Raised Without Antibiotics," "Grass-Fed," "Free-Range," and "Climate-Friendly.” USDA Authorizes First H5n1 Cattle Vaccine Field Study The USDA has authorized the first field trials for an H5N1 vaccine designed specifically for use in cattle. USDA’s Center for Veterinary Biologics (CVB) has issued public notice that it is “now accepting submissions for field studies to support conditional or full licensure of nonviable, non-replicating vaccines.” Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said in Boone, Iowa, at the annual Farm Progress Show, that there are “a number of companies that have been working on vaccines, and one company has now presented sufficient information to the USDA to allow me to authorize, the first field trial of a vaccine for cattle H5N1 for safety purposes.” The initial field study of nonviable, non-replicating vaccine against highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 is to be administered to dairy cattle to evaluate safety. “This would be the first field safety study for a bovine specific H5N1 vaccine and the first time a HPAI vaccine field study would be conducted outside a laboratory setting or on any type of commercial farm in the United States,” USDA said. The agency emphasized that the field trials will only involve “non-viable, non-replicating vaccines” that do not cause virus shedding. Cattle vaccinated thereby can not transmit virus to other animals, milk, meat, people or into the environment, and these cattle and their products will stay in normal production. USDA Expects Continued High Beef Imports From Uruguay Into 2025 The United States has grown rapidly as a market for Uruguayan beef, a trend likely to continue into next year, according to a new report from the USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS). Uruguay has recently jumped to sixth among the countries of origin for US beef imports, mostly frozen boneless, as “a profitable market which helps local meat packers compensate for lower exports at weaker prices to China. Mcdonald’s — Value In The U.S., Big Burgers Elsewhere According to meating place dot com, for much of the summer of 2024, McDonald’s has marketed “value” in the U.S., seeing lower-income consumer traffic drop noticeably as food inflation has risen. The dynamic has eroded the fast-food giant’s original reason for being as a low-cost convenience for busy families. In other markets it’s the flip side of the coin: McDonald’s is rolling out its decadently large Big Arch burger in Canada and, reportedly, other international markets, such as Portugal. By “decadent,” the Big Arch boasts a half-pound of Canadian beef patties, three slices of “white processed cheese,” crispy onions and slivered onions, pickles, lettuce and delicious “Big Arch” sauce. It weighs in with 1,030 calories just by itself. It also contains 96% of the recommended daily fat intake for the average adult. McDonald’s has been testing the sandwich in non-U.S. markets since May. RanchChannel.Com Now Has The Futures Markets Futures Markets RanchChannel.com now has futures markets at your fingertips! S1 Ep 45Nebraska Launches Battle Against Cultivated Meat
EPISODE 45 DETAILS Nebraska Launches Battle Against Cultivated Meat Nebraska Poised to Fight Cultivated Meat Nebraska Executive Order Enacted By Governor Nebraska is poised to become the fourth U.S. state to formally institute laws that restrict the sale of cultivated meat, now that Gov. Jim Pillen has signed an executive order prohibiting state agencies and contractors from buying cultivated meat products starting in 2025. Pillen is working with the Nebraska Department of Agriculture (NDA) to develop new guidelines to “protect the state’s agriculture industry as well as consumers, from lab-grown meat. Pillen also is calling on the NDA to begin developing a rulemaking process to ensure that any cultivated meat products sold in stores in Nebraska are “properly labeled and are not marketed next to natural meat on the same shelves.” Plans also call for the Nebraska state legislature to begin drafting a law to ban lab-grown meat in the Cornhusker State that could go into effect next year, the announcement said. Florida became the first state to enact a cultivated meat ban criminalizing the manufacture and sale of cell-cultured meat that went into effect July 1 and prompted an outcry from investors in biotech and food companies, in addition to sparking a lawsuit by alternative protein company Upside Foods. Similar legislation was introduced In Alabama and Ohio soon after the initial move on cultivated meat by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in May. Sodium monensin, also known by the brand name Rumensin, is a feed ingredient often added to the diets of cattle, sheep, goats and poultry. It is known to increase milk production, control ketosis, reduce bloat, control coccidiosis, improve feed efficiency and reproductive performance. If dogs, pigs or horses ingest monensin, it can be fatal. For horses, monensin can lead to myocardial necrosis, heart failure and death. There is no cure for monensin poisoning, veterinarians can only provide palliative care to horses that ingest it. Horses that survive a dose of monensin will most likely suffer from heart damage for the rest of their lives. S4 Ep 199Is IVF, In Vitro Fertilization, Right For My Herd
We find out if IVF, In Vitro Fertilization, is right for your operation. We have the latest news and markets, plus your chance to get your hands on more Ranch It Up gear. Tune in to this all new episode of the Ranch It Up Radio Show. Be sure to subscribe on your favorite podcasting app or on the Ranch It Up Radio Show YouTube Channel. EPISODE 199 DETAILS Is IVF, In Vitro Fertilization, Right For Your Herd Understanding In Vitro Fertilization What Is In Vitro Fertilization In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is the process of creating embryos from oocytes (unfertilized egg cells) by fertilizing them with semen in a Petri dish. Oocytes are first collected from the ovaries of donors by ultrasound-guided follicular aspiration. They are then matured in a Petri dish and fertilized 20-24 hours later. Conventional, sexed frozen, or reverse-sorted semen may be used for fertilization. Oocytes then develop in an incubator for seven days, at which point the resulting viable embryos are transferred into recipients. How Does In Vitro Fertilization Work In-Vitro Fertilization resembles conventional ET by allowing cows to produce multiple calves per year. This is accomplished by generating embryos from elite cows called donors and transferring them into cows with less genetic merit called recipients. After this, there are many differences in the way the procedure works. In IVF, oocytes (unfertilized eggs) are collected using a specially designed probe, fitted with an ultrasound transducer which allows the ovary to be visualized during the aspiration procedure. The technician locates and stabilizes the ovary via rectal palpation of the reproductive tract. The aspiration probe is inserted vaginally where the transducer and ovary meet with only the vaginal wall separating the two. The probe has an attached needle guide that houses a 55cm long needle. This needle will transverse the vaginal membrane and is inserted into fluid filled follicles, containing oocytes, located on the ovary. The contents of the follicles are aspirated out and captured in a searchable filter. The filter is then taken into the lab where it is rinsed and searched using a microscope; the oocytes are then retrieved, counted, and graded. Once the oocytes have been processed they are moved into dishes with special media designed to mature them. The dishes are placed in an incubator for 18 to 24 hours where the maturation process takes place. The following day, semen is added to the dishes containing the matured oocytes and fertilization takes place. The media and incubator are designed to mimic the cow’s uterine environment as pertains to temperature, pH, etc. Following fertilization, the oocytes are left in the incubators for the next 7 days as a percentage of them develop into embryos. They can then be evaluated under a microscope and quality graded just as you would conventional ET embryos. The grade one and two embryos are now ready to be loaded into transfer straws and implanted into recipient cows that were in standing heat 7-8 days prior to the transfer date or frozen for transfer at a later date. Potential Applications of IVF, In Vitro Fertilization Embryo production from pregnant donors — Because the cervix and uterus are not penetrated during the process of aspiration, oocytes can still be collected without disturbing the fetus. Donors can be safely aspirated from about 45-100 days of gestation. On rare occasions donors can be aspirated up to 6 months of gestation, as long as the ovaries are accessible to the technician. This application is a good alternative for operations wanting to get a jump on the next generation. In years past, breeders were forced to decide whether to risk future productivity of young donors by flushing them as virgins or just postponing embryo production until after their first calf. By getting the heifers pregnant first, they are already on their way to calving in a normal window with their counterparts. It also works well for those operations that want to keep donors on a 365-day calving interval, and can help reduce reproductive failures such as cysts in donors that remain open for long periods of time. Production from donors that do not make embryos in ET — Various reasons can cause donors to be nonproductive in ET. Blockages, scaring, uterine infections, and un-passable cervixes are some of the more common reproductive tract abnormalities that can be overcome through IVF. Also, donors prone to overstimulation or those that produce a high percentage of unfertilized eggs, generally perform well in IVF Donors that typically fail to stimulate and ovulate little to no ova will not necessarily benefit from IVF. Adding value to semen —With IVF, less semen is needed than in a typical AI or ET procedure because oocytes are contained in small dishes during the fertilization period. This allows for tremendous opportunities. Depending on quality, one straw of conventional semen can fertilize oocytes from as many as 15 donors. This allow

EPISODE 43 DETAILS Current Cattle Industry News JBS Cattle Outlook for 2025 & Beyond According to MeatingPlace.com, JBS expects 2025 to continue to be a challenging year for the US beef industry, with cattle availability increasing to higher levels in 2026, according to the JBS USA chief executive officer. He went on to say that we are pretty optimistic about the beginning of (cattle) retention in the US. We see cow slaughtering coming down by 15% year-over-year. We think that is a huge sign of retention starting. The moment that is very important for us to watch out for is going to be this fall, and we're going to see what happens. He said JBS Beef North America will continue to capture gains from improvements in industrial processes, which should contribute to increasing the unit's margins in the future. In the second quarter of 2024, JBS USA's beef margins were pressured by low cattle availability Florida Sued Over Cultivated Meat Ban Upside Foods filed a lawsuit recently over a Florida law that bans the sale of cultivated meat in the state. Berkeley, Calif.-based Upside Foods, one of two companies approved to sell cultivated meat in the United States, contends the Florida law that took effect July 1 is unconstitutional, according to court documents. Specifically, the lawsuit argues that the ban violates the Supremacy Clause because it is preempted by federal laws regulating meat and poultry products, and that it violates the dormant aspect of the Commerce Clause by purposely “insulating” Florida ag businesses from out-of-state competition. Florida was the first state to ban cultivated meat, with Gov. Ron DeSantis saying Florida was “fighting back” against the “global elite” who were allegedly forcing consumers to eat cultivated meat. He said his administration was protecting Florida farmers and ranchers in an effort to “save our beef.” Alabama was the second state to ban cultivated meat. “UPSIDE doesn’t want to force anyone to eat cultivated meat,” the company’s lawsuit states. “But it does want the opportunity to distribute its product to willing consumers, so that those consumers can decide for themselves whether UPSIDE’s product is worth eating. And UPSIDE has a right to do so, because SB 1084 is unconstitutional.” SPONSORS Trans Ova Genetics https://transova.com/ @TransOvaGenetics American Gelbvieh Association https://gelbvieh.org/ @AmericanGelbvieh Allied Genetic Resources https://alliedgeneticresources.com/ @AlliedGeneticResources Ranch Channel https://ranchchannel.com/ @RanchChannel Axiota Animal Health https://axiota.com/ @MultiminUSA Questions & Concerns From The Field? Tune in to this all new episode of the Ranch It Up Radio Show. Be sure to subscribe on your favorite podcasting app or on the Ranch It Up Radio Show YouTube Channel. EPISODE 198 DETAILS Why Lactipro As A Probiotic For Cattle How Lactipro Works As A Probiotic For Cattle Introduction to Lactipro Lactipro is a rumen-native probiotic containing a live, stable strain of Megasphaera elsdenii (Mega e®), an effective lactic acid utilizer. It helps cattle producers maintain healthy rumen pH and improve profitability by accelerating finishing diets and reducing post-terminal processing mortality. Key Benefits of Lactipro Shortens step-up period by 50% or more Reduces post-terminal processing performance losses Supports rumen health in hospital cattle Lactipro promotes rumen health during transitions to higher-grain diets, grazing crop residue, and as bulls move to higher energy diets during development. How Does Lactipro Work? Naturally occurring Mega e takes weeks to handle grain-based diets effectively. Fast-growing bacteria produce excessive lactic acid, lowering rumen pH and causing health issues like acidosis. Lactipro introduces Mega e directly into the rumen, consuming lactic acid and producing butyric acid, which promotes cell growth and better VFA absorption. The Importance of Mega e Strain MS Biotec’s patented Mega e strain is selected for its: Rapid growth and resilience Production of butyric acid Compatibility with feed additives Enhanced rumen fermentation with other microbials Two Formulations of Lactipro LactiproNXT® An easy-to-use drench available in 200 mL and 1,000 mL pouches, ideal for processing multiple cattle. LactiproFLX comes in three types: Dairy – for replacement heifers and mature cows Feedlot – for feedlot cattle and developing bulls Calf – for young calves Use Cases Accelerated Step-Up Shortens step-up period by 50% or more for a faster diet transition. Terminal Processing Reduces post-terminal processing performance losses. Other Use Cases Supports rumen health during diet transitions, grazing, and bull development phases. Integrating Lactipro ensures a healthier rumen, leading to better overall cattle health and profitability. Latest Cattle Industry News North Carolina Man Pleads In Nation-Wide Cattle Theft Conspiracy According to the U.S. attorney for the Western District of North Carolina and MeatingPlace.com, a North Carolina man pleaded guilty to implementing a scheme to steal $1 million worth of cattle across the country. From April 2018 to October 2022, William Dalton Edwards, 25, of Mount Airy, N.C., and an accomplice defrauded livestock markets in North Carolina, Texas, Oklahoma and Virginia by writing worthless checks for cattle purchases, according to the plea. The stolen cattle were then transported out of state and resold, resulting in losses exceeding $1 million to family-owned sales barns. Edwards' guilty plea includes charges of conspiring to defraud the U.S. and violate federal laws. The statutory maximum sentence for the offense is five years in prison. Edwards is currently out on bond, with a sentencing date yet to be determined. U.S. Beef Export Value Nears Two-Year High The value of U.S. beef exports hit a near two-year high in June, the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF) commented late last week. Despite lower volume compared to a year ago, US beef exports in June were worth $938.3 million, a 22-month peak. Exports to Japan rose, and Taiwan continued buying US beef at near-record levels. Exports to Canada were at a near-decade high. USMEF President and CEO Dan Halstrom said June beef exports performed very well in Japan, which was great to see given the significant headwinds U.S. beef has faced there this year. Export value also rebounded nicely in Korea and shipments to Taiwan and Canada were outstanding. This made for another strong month in terms of export value per head slaughtered, which was nearly $460 in June. Beef export value per head of fed slaughter was up 13% in June from a year ago. For the first six months of 2024, beef export value was $5.22 billion, 5% higher than the same period a year earlier. Beef export value per head of fed slaughter was more than $418 for the first half, an increase of 6% from the same period in 2023. S1 Ep 42Why Beef On Dairy Genetics
EPISODE 42 DETAILS Purina Report Shows Profit Opportunities From Beef-On-Dairy Crossbreeding According to a report from Purina Animal Health, and reported by MeatingPlace.com, the contraction in the U.S. beef herd has opened opportunities for dairy producers to capitalize by delivering beef-on-dairy crossbred calves. The firm’s recently released Beef-on-Dairy Industry Report cites Purina survey data showing that most dairy farmers are realizing a premium approaching $200 a head, with some netting double or triple that advantage. The current market has about 3 million beef-on-dairy cattle according to the report, which includes chapters written by Purina staff as well as beef industry experts from academia and extension programs. Kansas State University Professor Robert Weaber, department head for the Eastern Kansas Research and Extension Center, writes that adding beef genetics to breeding programs can help dairy producers “enhance their operations and maximize the value of their surplus calf stream.” Raising cattle with a different genetic profile requires focus attention on “other factors like nutrition and management” to achieve the “full genetic potential and value,” he said in the report’s section on selecting sires. What many do not realize is the amount of beef on dairy or even traditional dairy cattle that are in the beef supply chain. With continued financial pressure on dairy producers, it is only an obvious choice that dairy farmers are looking for other areas to realize a potential premium. We will have more on this topic coming up on the full weekend show, here in the near future, and how this approach has paved the way for more precise breeding in the beef sector. EPISODE 197 DETAILS Why Trace Mineral Supplementation For Cattle Your Best Shot At Strategic Trace Mineral Supplementation For Cattle Supports Cattle Health And Reproduction Multimin® 90 (zinc, copper, manganese, and selenium injection) is a proven, one-of-a-kind solution to provide trace minerals known to support cattle health and reproduction. Successful Breeding Strategic trace mineral supplementation improves trace mineral status in breeding stock, leading to more calves in fewer days (references 1-2 below). Healthy Calving Third-trimester supplementation of trace minerals supports cow-to-calf trace mineral transfer and colostrum quality when used with a scours vaccine.3-4. Enhanced Immunity Enhances cattle vaccine protection and immune response when used as part of a vaccination protocol.5-6. Why Is Trace Mineral Supplementation Necessary? Inadequate trace mineral status in cattle can lead to suppressed immune function, lower fertility, and decreased growth. Oral nutrition programs face challenges such as: Antagonists in water/feed binding minerals in the rumen, limiting absorption Variation in intake among cattle Increased mineral demand during stressful events, which oral minerals cannot quickly meet How Does Multimin 90 Work? Multimin 90 complements an oral nutrition program by increasing zinc, copper, manganese, and selenium levels in cattle. Administered via subcutaneous injection, it reaches peak levels in the blood within 8-10 hours and is stored in the liver for later use. Important Safety Information For Multimin 90: Not for use in humans, keep out of reach of children. Multimin 90 has a pre-slaughter withdrawal time of 14 days after injection. Do not use it during the first trimester of pregnancy or in pre-ruminant calves as safety has not been established. Selenium and copper are toxic if administered in excess and may lead to sudden death, depression, weakness, ataxia, salivation, and drooling. Do not use concurrently with other selenium or copper injections or boluses. Maximum volume per injection site is 7 mL. Allow a minimum of 30 days before considering repeat dosing. S1 Ep 41Review Corporate Transparency Act To Avoid Penalties & Superior Livestock Auction
EPISODE 41 DETAILS Producers Need To Review The Corporate Transparency Act To Avoid Costly Penalties The Corporate Transparency Act, passed by Congress in 2021, requires companies to report beneficial ownership information to the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), a division of the U.S. Department of the Treasury. The goal of the legislation is to reduce financial crime, but the new mandate will impact farmers and ranchers whose operations have fewer than 20 employees and are structured as corporations such as limited liability companies (LLC) or companies that are registered with the secretary of state. Farms and ranches that are structured as corporations, LLCs, or other entities that file with the secretary of state may be subject to the Corporate Transparency Act and required to file a “beneficial ownership” report with the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, identifying the individuals who own or manage the operation. For companies registered and operating before January 1, 2024, the deadline to file this report is the end of 2024. Companies registered or created in 2024 have 90 days from the date of registration or creation to file their beneficial ownership report. In 2025, the reporting period will be reduced to 30 days. S4 Ep 196Why IVF To Improve Cattle Herd Genetics
We start to dive into the topic of In Vitro Fertilization. Plus we have the latest news and markets, and share how you can get your hands on more Ranch It Up Gear by playing What’s Your Beef trivia on this all new episode of the Ranch It Up Radio Show. Be sure to subscribe on your favorite podcasting app or on the Ranch It Up Radio Show YouTube Channel. EPISODE 196 DETAILS Why In Vitro Fertilization From Trans Ova Genetics What Is In Vitro Fertilization In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is the process of creating embryos from oocytes (unfertilized egg cells) by fertilizing them with semen in a Petri dish. Latest Cattle Industry News Colorado has largest H5N1 outbreak in US history Colorado health officials have confirmed 10 human cases of avian flu, marking the largest outbreak of human bird flu infections in U.S. history. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported 11 cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1) in humans since 2022, with 10 occurring this year. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment announced that two poultry farms in Weld County have birds infected with H5N1, with three confirmed cases at one farm and six at another. Another human case was detected in a dairy farm worker in the state. The state’s health agency said the count is up to 47 infected herds in the state. State and federal officials said the concern for the virus is still low due to the lack of person-to-person transmission. However, the latest scientific article on H5N1 avian influenza finds that the virus, which has forced the culling of tens of millions of birds on poultry farms since January 2022, can spread with relative ease among dairy cows, domestic cats and even a raccoon. So far, no mutations have been found in the strain’s genome that would allow the virus to spread more easily in humans, despite the clear transmissions between mammals. Since April 2022, public health authorities have confirmed 11 human cases from cattle and poultry farms, seven of which occurred among workers involved in a cull this summer in response to a poultry outbreak in Colorado. Those human cases showed the same virus circulating in dairy herds, which suggests that the poultry outbreak in that area was transmitted back to birds via local cows. Ag land market could be showing signs of settling According to Farmers National Company, the agricultural land market has been “nothing short of exceptional during the past five years.” Gains in value are common across all classes of land in every region of the country. Strong commodity markets, moderate interest rates, buyer demand and an overall healthy agricultural economy have also supported the growth of land values during this time. Paul Schadegg, senior vice president of real estate operations at Farmers National Company says a lot has changed in the past 12 months and even more has changed within the past five years. He said moving into the second half of 2023 and the first half of 2024, we’ve experienced significant increases in interest rates, declining grain markets, and inflation. Despite these negative pressures, the land market has remained relatively resilient but shows signs of settling in general, including single-digit decreases in specific areas.” One aspect of the agricultural land market is the long-term appreciation of land value. Over the past 25 years, land values have experienced a stair-stepping trend following the ups and downs of the agricultural economy. As grain markets and farm profitability rose, the land markets followed while leveling off as markets and profitability did the same. Schadegg said each plateau has set a new value standard sustained through production, demand and profitability. Schadegg went on to say that with farm operators being the largest segment of land buyers, the biggest impact on land values moving forward will be profitability in agriculture. If profit opportunities are limited, motivation to buy will decrease and, subsequently, pressure land values into a downward trend. Latest Cattle Industry News Ponzi Scheme Cattle Company Sale Could Aid Investors According to Jeff Beach with the North Dakota Monitor, A North Dakota investor says the purchase of a financially troubled meat company is progressing with a percentage of the profits being used to pay back investors in the alleged Ponzi scheme over several years. Wylie Bice of Killdeer, who is among those who lost money by investing in Texas-based Agridime, told the North Dakota Monitor that a price has been agreed upon to buy the company. Bice said the offer is reasonable but several steps remain before the deal can close. The court-appointed official overseeing the company said in a July 8 update on Agridime.com that federal law requires three separate appraisals for each parcel of property being sold, “which is not a quick process.” The update did not say a deal has been reached, but when it is, it would be submitted to the court for a 30-day review and objection period before it can close. Bice said the final agreement would likely include a percentage of the profits of the company to be used to pay back investors over a designated period of years. Investors in several states, including a high concentration in North Dakota, lost millions of dollars by investing in Agridime. Agridime bought cattle, had them brought up to market weight at feedlots and processed in retail cuts of meat. The company then direct-marketed the beef through its website. It also sold investments in calves, promising as much as a 30% return on investment without having to do the work of ranching. The Securities and Exchange Commission in December accused the company of operating as a Ponzi scheme by taking money from new investors to pay off previous investors instead of investing that money into cattle. The North Dakota Securities Department said a Killdeer-based sales agent, Taylor Bang, earned $6 million in commissions from illegal cattle investment contracts through Agridime. Bang told the North Dakota Monitor in December that the figure was “way high.” While it is under investigation, a slimmed-down version of the company has continued to operate as American Grazed Beef. Bice said that if the deal is approved, he and his partners would likely keep the American Grazed Beef name. The investments in calves, however, would not be a part of the business plan. Bice, Bang, and other Nort
S1 Ep 39Department Of Defense Backs Off Feeding Lab-Grown Protein
EPISODE 39 DETAILS DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE BACKS OFF FEEDING LAB-GROWN PROTEIN NCBA Successfully Prevents Lab-Grown Protein in American Armed Forces' Diet Today, the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) confirmed that efforts to prevent ultra-processed, lab-grown protein from showing up in the diet of the American armed forces were successful, following news that the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) is not pursuing lab-grown protein projects for human consumption. NCBA has worked with agriculture allies in Congress to secure the introduction of several amendments to the Fiscal Year 2025 Defense Appropriations bill, National Defense Authorization Act, and Fiscal Year 2025 Agriculture Appropriations bill, aimed at preventing lab-grown protein from ever showing up on the plates of American servicemembers. The NCBA Senior Director of Government Affairs said that “The Department of Defense can and should be on the cutting edge of science, and we respect their work to investigate defense applications for new tools and technology. However, there’s a big difference between industrial or defense applications and the food we put in our bodies. Public Health Officials Confirm Four More HPAI Cases In Humans An update on the Avian Flu, The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) this past weekend confirmed that four workers at a poultry farm in northeast Colorado were infected with highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). The agency confirmed that four of the workers who were culling birds after an HPAI outbreak at the commercial egg-laying operation tested positive for HPAI, and a fifth employee is presumed HPAI-positive as the agency waits for samples to be processed. The CDC is investigating whether the workers properly used recommended personal protective equipment (PPE) and will decide whether guidance adjustments to protect poultry farm employees are warranted. Most human cases of HPAI infection involved people who were not wearing recommended PPE when working with infected birds, CDC noted. The agency also is analyzing the virus sequences from the outbreak in order to determine if a change in the risk assessment should be launched. HPAI infections in humans have been confirmed in three U.S. states since March. Meanwhile, USDA reported that an estimated 152 dairy cattle herds in at least 10 states tested positive for HPAI infections so far this year. US Beef Exports Exceeded $900 Million In May Shipments of beef from the United States to foreign markets hit an 11-month high in May in dollar terms, according to the U.S. Meat Export Federation. The value of beef exports was 3% higher than the same month a year ago and the highest mark since June 2023. For the first five months of 2024, the U.S. beef industry exports were worth $4.29 billion, 5% ahead of the same period in 2023. Calculated per head of fed slaughter, export value in May was $410.94, up 3% from May 2023. The U.S. Meat Export Federation said that Japan, Taiwan and the ASEAN region showed strong demand for U.S. beef in May, as well as Mexico, Guatemala and the Caribbean. Equine Infectious Anemia confirmed in Nebraska horse The Nebraska Department of Agriculture July 4 announced a confirmed case of equine infectious anemia in a horse located in Colfax County. This is the first confirmed case of EIA since 2013 in the state. NDA staff are working with the owner and local veterinarian to monitor potentially exposed horses. The infected horse is currently quarantined and will be released once state regulations are met. Spread by blood-to-blood contact, EIA is an incurable, infectious viral disease and can be transmitted from an infected equine to an uninfected equine by blood-feeding insects such as horseflies, deer flies, or stable flies, and by people using contaminated medical equipment, such as needles, syringes, and IV sets. There are currently no USDA-approved vaccines for EIA. Equine owners can do a number of things to help protect their animals, and this includes things like implementing insect controls, keeping stables and facilities clean, eliminating standing water, using one needle per horse, separating infected equine from the healthy, and never using blood-contaminated medical equipment. S4 Ep 193How To Beat The Heat Stress In Cattle
We hear how to reduce heat stress in cattle. We have a new give-a-way beef contest, updates on the markets, weigh up cow and bull prices and lots more all wrapped into this all new episode of the Ranch It Up Radio Show. Be sure to subscribe on your favorite podcasting app or on the Ranch It Up Radio Show YouTube Channel. EPISODE 193 DETAILS HOW TO BEAT HEAT STRESS IN CATTLE. Farmatan Heat Stress Blend With Rumetrics® by Imogene Ingredients Heat has a significant effect on increasing blood glucose levels during stressful periods in livestock. Production of the stress hormone, Cortisol, during chronic stress suppresses the immune system. The long duration of heat stress (Temperatures above 75° F} and the continuous release of gluco-corticoids may result in increased inflammation, slowing of the immune system, poor growth and lowering of fertility in bovine. Farmatan® with Rumetrics™ Both Farmatan and Rumetrics have a long track record of influencing rumen microbial activity, impacting enzyme regulation involved in carbohydrate, glucose, lipid metabolism, protein synthesis, cellular electrolyte transport, and thyroxine production resulting in whole body electrolyte balance. Benefits of Farmatan® Improves integrity of mucosa and tight junctions of the intestine, reducing “leaky gut” and pathogen entry, provides optimum use and absorption of nutrients and maintenance of a strong immune system. What is Rumetrics™ Rumetrics™ is a proprietary formulation of selected ingredients of Chromium, Capsicum, Betaine, Chelated Minerals and Critical Vitamins that together can aid in mitigating the negative physiological response to cortisol. Benefits of Farmatan Heat Stress Blend With Rumetrics® Benefits of This Combined Blend The unique structures and mechanisms of hydrolysable tannins provide beneficial effects such as: antimicrobial, antioxidant, radical scavenging, anti-diarrhea and anti inflammation in animals. Chromium enables and improves cellular insulin sensitivity resulting in efficient utilization of glucose to maintain cell metabolism. Chromium also reduces the release of the stress hormone cortisol thereby maintaining optimal immune balance. Capsicum has a spectrum of activity; stimulates water intake, regulates feeding patterns, maintains GI blood flow to minimize stress related "leaky gut", reduces cellular oxidative stress and stimulates white blood cells for immune stability. Betaine serves as a methyl donor in enzymatic reactions and assists in cellular electrolyte transport. Select vitamins, trace minerals and Chelated minerals aid in maintaining and supporting health and performance. Feeding Directions: Farmatan Heat Stress Blend With Rumetrics® Feed at the rate of 7 gram per head per day for maintenance and 11 gram per head per day over 75° F. More Information and to Purchase here: https://www.imogeneingredients.com/contact Regulatory Status All ingredients are generally regarded as safe (GRAS) status as multipurpose food and feed substances under Title 21 CFR 184.1400. Farmatan® and Rumetrics® are also generally permitted in foods and feeds as 1c322i. S1 Ep 37Is The National Beef Checkoff Working
EPISODE 37 DETAILS NEW INDEPENDENT STUDY FINDS EACH NATIONAL BEEF CHECKOFF DOLLAR RETURNS $13.41 TO PRODUCERS & IMPORTERS Checkoff Dollars Return $13.41 To Producers A recent economic analysis of the national Beef Checkoff program found that each dollar invested in its demand-driving activities for the most recent five-year period (2019–2023) positively impacted domestic beef demand and U.S. beef exports, creating a total financial benefit of $13.41 for the producers and importers who pay into the program. Beef’s Checkoff Dollars Return On Investment (ROI) In addition to calculating a ROI of $13.41, the ROI analysis enabled the study to simulate market conditions for beef demand in the absence of national Beef Checkoff investments. For the most recent five-year period, 2019-2023, had there not been any investments in national Beef Checkoff demand-driving activities: Total domestic beef demand would have been 2.4 billion pounds (8.5%) lower per year than actual results. The steer price would have been 7.8% lower per year than actual results. U.S. export beef demand would have been 372 million pounds (11.5%) lower than actual results in the seven major importing countries included in the study. PRICES FOR MEAT, FOOD HIT BY INFLATION Summer BBQ Season Hit By Food Inflation Inflation is leading American consumers to look for ways to save money on meat and other ingredients that make up the traditional summer BBQ, yet they are still willing to pay for an experience that leads to good memories for their families, according to experts from Rabobank. Food Inflation Over The Past 5 Years In the past five years, there has been an increase in prices due to agricultural industry effects from severe drought, higher restaurant overhead and wages, rising interest rates, geopolitical crises, and higher inflation throughout the supply chain. This has led to a food cost increase of 27% from 2019 to the end of 2023. Adding another 2.4% for 2024 leads to 32% inflation during the past five years. The food cost increase over the past five years led to 32% inflation. S4 Ep 192How To Work Cattle With Dogs
We hear how to handle cattle with dogs along with how to get cattle settled and used to having dogs around them. Plus we have market information, hay for sale and lots more all wrapped into this all new episode of the Ranch It Up Radio Show. Be sure to subscribe on your favorite podcasting app or on the Ranch It Up Radio Show YouTube Channel. EPISODE 192 DETAILS WORKING CATTLE WITH DOGS. Training Your Dogs To Work Cattle Introduction I have been training dogs to work cattle for most of my life. Growing up on a cow/calf operation, good dogs were essential. Getting Started While a round pen is nice, it's not necessary. Using sheep or calves initially can help lay a foundation for your dog. Teaching Your Dog To Shed Cattle To sort cattle from a large herd, your dog needs to learn to “shed.” This requires patience, as dogs may initially feel out of control. Shedding Exercise Steps Start with Calves: Place calves between you and your dog. Use the Fence: Back against the fence, letting calves string out. Create a Break: Use a cattle stick to split the group. Call Your Dog: Bring your dog to the head of the sorted calves. Assign a Job: Move the sorted calves away, giving your dog a task. Handling Different Types Of Cattle Dogs should be more aggressive with rougher cattle and gentler with quieter ones. If your dog is reluctant to work, you may be correcting too harshly. Understanding Behavior Both dogs and livestock have a “bubble.” Encourage your dog to find it for easier movement of cows and calves. Pre-Training Importance Train your dog before taking them to work to reduce mishaps and make tasks easier. By following these steps, you can effectively train your dog to work cattle. EPISODE 36 DETAILS TYSON FOODS SCALES BACK PRODUCTION OF ANTIBIOTIC-FREE BEEF AMID CHALLENGING MARKET CONDITIONS Reduction In ABF Beef Production Tyson Foods is reducing its production of antibiotic-free (ABF) beef as it navigates difficult market conditions. According to a Bloomberg report, this decision marks a significant shift in the company's strategy. An anonymous source familiar with the decision revealed that Tyson informed a major customer late last year about its inability to continue supplying ABF beef. Limitations On Open Prairie Natural Meats Brand Bloomberg also cited a document indicating that ABF beef under Tyson's Open Prairie Natural Meats brand would be restricted starting in January. This move follows Tyson's earlier decision to move away from raising chicken without antibiotics. CEO’s Comments On Market Challenges In the company’s second-quarter earnings call, Tyson CEO Donnie King mentioned that limited cattle supplies have resulted in "spread compression." The company anticipates a full-year adjusted operating income loss ranging from $400 million to $100 million. King emphasized that Tyson would focus on controllable factors, such as "managing mix to meet customer and consumer demand." Impact On Certified Angus Beef Program In addition to the changes reported by Bloomberg, Tyson recently ended an ABF beef program with Certified Angus Beef (CAB). A CAB spokeswoman confirmed this development to Meatingplace, stating that Tyson is reevaluating its antibiotic-free offerings as a whole. By focusing on these key changes, Tyson Foods aims to adapt to current market conditions while continuing to meet customer and consumer demands. Be sure to subscribe on your favorite podcasting app or on the Ranch It Up Radio Show YouTube Channel. EPISODE 191 DETAILS HOW TO USE MULTIMIN & LACTIPRO Your Best Shot at Strategic Trace Mineral Supplementation for Cattle Supports Cattle Health and Reproduction Multimin® 90 is a unique injectable solution containing zinc, copper, manganese, and selenium, proven to support cattle health and reproduction. Research shows that strategic trace mineral supplementation enhances breeding success, healthy calving, and improved immunity. Benefits of Strategic Supplementation with Multimin 90 Reaches peak plasma levels within 8-10 hours Bypasses rumen antagonists Ensures consistent supplementation for every animal injected Can be used during high-demand periods like calving, breeding, vaccination, and transportation When to Use Multimin 90 Cows and Heifers Last trimester of pregnancy 30 days pre-breeding or at CIDR insertion (11 days before AI) Bulls Weaning 90 days post-weaning 45-60 days prior to breeding season Calves (2 months of age or older) Branding/first vaccination Weaning/preconditioning Stockers At processing How to Use Multimin 90 Consult your veterinarian and follow label directions. S1 Ep 35What Is Happening With Cattle ID Mandate
Hear the latest on what is happening with USDA’s mandatory electronic id final rule and updates from Northern Livestock Video Auction Feeder Calf Sales. EPISODE 35 DETAILS WYOMING LED BILL OPPOSES USDA CATTLE ID MANDATE? Introduction U.S. Senators Cynthia Lummis and John Barrasso, alongside U.S. Representative Harriet Hageman, all Republicans from Wyoming, have introduced legislation opposing the USDA’s final rule mandating electronic identification ear tags for bison and cattle. Congressional Review Act Resolution The Congressional Review Act resolution aims to overturn the USDA’s rule, which is scheduled to take effect on November 5. This rule mandates that ranchers must equip all livestock over 18 months old with electronic identification ear tags if they are transported across state lines, with exemptions only for animals going directly to slaughter. Impact On Ranchers The Wyoming lawmakers argue that this rule, which is expected to affect approximately 11 million cattle nationwide, will financially burden cattle producers and invade their privacy. USDA’s Stance The USDA defends the rule, stating that electronic identification ear tags are crucial for quickly identifying and responding to costly foreign animal diseases. Conclusion The legislation introduced by the Wyoming representatives highlights the ongoing debate between enhancing animal disease tracking and the financial and privacy concerns of cattle producers. Updated March 2022 Joint AABP-AVC Judicious Therapeutic Use of Antimicrobials in Cattle Cattle Industry News: Avian Flu Update, Livestock Indemnity Payments, Cultivated Meat Influenza Sweeps Through Northwest Iowa Dairy Cattle According to MeatingPlace.com, following Iowa's first positive case of HPAI, Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, in dairy cattle in early June, Iowa has reported four new cases in its northwest region. According to the Iowa Department of Agriculture & Land Stewardship, influenza was detected in three dairy cattle herds in Sioux County and one in neighboring Plymouth County. Both northwest counties border O'Brien County, where Iowa's first dairy cattle influenza case was reported June 6. At the time, Iowa was the 10th state to confirm HPAI in dairy cows. The nationwide outbreak of the avian virus in dairy has struck nearly 100 herds across 12 states. Bills Introduced To Help Unborn Livestock Losses U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz and U.S. Rep. Ronny Jackson introduced the Livestock Indemnity Program Enhancement Act to help Texas livestock producers recover from the devastating wildfires that occurred in the Texas Panhandle earlier this year. This bill would require the U.S. Department of Agriculture to establish an additional payment rate through the Livestock Indemnity Program for excessive unborn livestock death losses, according to the Texas Cattle Feeders Association. Cattlemen Take Aim At Government Investment In The Cultivated Space The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) issued a statement condemning a Department of Defense-sponsored research grant that will fund the development of cell-cultivated meat products by manufacturing company BioMADE. NCBA Vice President of Government Affairs Ethan Lane said, “It is outrageous that the Department of Defense is spending millions of taxpayer dollars to feed our heroes like lab rats. U.S. cattle producers raise the highest-quality beef in the world, with the lowest carbon footprint — and American troops deserve to be served that same wholesome, natural meat and not ultra-processed, lab-grown protein that is cooked up in a chemical-filled bioreactor”. He went on to say “This misguided research project is a giant slap in the face to everyone that has served our country. Our veterans and active-duty troops deserve so much better than this.” BioMADE is described as a public-private bio-manufacturing consortium sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense. EPISODE 33 DETAILS MANDATORY COUNTRY OF ORIGIN LABELING ADDED TO THE FARM BILL & SUPERIOR LIVESTOCK AUCTION UPDATES? Senator Mike Rounds (R-SD) has extended the deadline for including more Senators in his letter urging Congress to include MCOOL in the 2024 Farm Bill. Rounds says following the successful implementation of MCOOL, producers and consumers enjoyed a short-lived period of marketplace transparency. This change applied the same country of origin labeling standards to beef as the majority of other consumer goods sold in America. Unfortunately, a coalition of large meatpacking companies and foreign beef interests worked to repeal MCOOL. After Canada and Mexico filed a dispute with the World Trade Organization (WTO), Congress officially rescinded the law in 2015. Since the repeal of MCOOL, American cattle producers have experienced significant market fluctuations. Concurrently, the largest meat packers have realized immense profits through the use of forward contracting and formula-based sales. While cattle prices are currently on the rise, it is evident producers will again encounter market disruptions. As farmers and ranchers deal with a volatile market, it is imperative the federal government work to provide a level playing field. This can be achieved through supporting additional transparency in our beef labeling system. Our American farmers and ranchers work hard to provide the safest and best tasting beef in the world. Producers of foreign beef should not receive an unfair advantage when engaging in our domestic markets, especially as our competitors do not always meet American animal health and consumer safety standards. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s recent “Product of the USA” final rulemaking is a step in the right direction, but there is more work to be done.
