Ep 154Episode 154 - RAD Prodcast - Emotional Freedom Technique with Crystal Clune

E

Brando sits down with Crystal Clune from Helping Hands to learn about Emotional Freedom Technique, or EFT.  Find out more at https://www.efthelpinghands.org/EFT stands for Emotional Freedom Technique. It is a form of energy work very similar to acupressure. It uses certain meridians throughout the body to release energy so that you can have a healthy flow of energy throughout the body. When energy gets blocked up, psychosomatic symptoms occur such as, headaches, stomach aches, back pains etc. By tapping we are releasing the energy that is blocked in those points and restoring balance to the person’s energy flow. With trauma and other bothersome memories, tapping helps rewire the brain and help you have the memories without any emotional response or connection.Brando has an EFT session to focus on releasing the negativity surrounding his recent divorce, and the results are surprising!See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Rob's Soapbox - On The Border

E

If you saw the title and thought we’d be discussing illegal immigration, you’re going to be sorely disappointed. If you thought I’d be telling you about my favorite casual family style Mexican restaurants you’re going to be even more disappointed.Whether one political party in particular wants to admit it or not, there is a crisis at the American border with Mexico, actually many. But the biggest of them all isn’t the issue of immigration, which this country has been arguing over for my entire lifetime. The debate over who and how many should be allowed into America will continue endlessly and neither side will be right, nor get what they want. We can, and will, discuss it at another time. The crisis on the border is actually about Americans and their rights; the right to pursue happiness, the right to assemble, the right to move freely between states, the right to be secure in our houses, and while not expressly written in the Constitution, the implied right to freely make our own decisions, ambitiously chase success, and choose, on our own, what risks we will take. For the last year, we have been told, and in many cases, forced, to end our lives as we knew them, all in the name of stopping Covid. By May of 2020, just two months into this disaster, 100,000 American businesses had closed permanently. In September, the worthless pile of garbage that is Yelp reported that 60% of the businesses on its app were gone forever. A few weeks ago, a study reported that 9 million American small businesses currently still open don’t expect to survive the pandemic. 9 million! Meanwhile, dozens of larger corporations have either shut-down or declared bankruptcy. All of this resulted in more than 20 million jobs being lost. Keep in mind that at any time, regardless of a pandemic, only 60% of the American population even has a job…losing 22 million of them is beyond devastating, but it happened; all because we had to beat a virus. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-economy/u-s-economy-loses-jobs-as-covid-19-hammers-restaurants-bars-idUSKBN29D0J9https://thehill.com/changing-america/well-being/longevity/497519-more-than-100000-small-businesses-have-permanentlyhttps://www.cbsnews.com/news/small-business-federal-aid-pandemic/https://www.nbcnews.com/business/consumer/which-major-retail-companies-have-filed-bankruptcy-coronavirus-pandemic-hit-n1207866https://www.statista.com/statistics/192398/employment-rate-in-the-us-since-1990/We are barely scratching the surface of what will ultimately be an unspeakable amount of damage we have done to our collective mental and physical health as a result of locking down the world for a year. Last month, researchers found that an increase in “hazardous” alcohol use went from 21% in April to 40.7% in September. Alcohol dependence rose from 7.9% to 29.1% in the same time span. In the first week of lockdown, between the weeks of March 22 and March 29, liquor sales shot up 204%, wine 200%, and beer 159%, And overall in 2020, U.S. alcohol sales increased by 54%. https://nypost.com/2021/02/18/alarming-alcohol-abuse-rising-under-covid-19-lockdown-study/https://fredericksburg.com/business/investment/personal-finance/covid-era-alcohol-sales-by-the-numbers/collection_71a5e157-8b9c-586e-b7bf-db2fb35589d0.html#3Domestic violence, child abuse, suicide, depression, and self-harm are all soaring. And of course, those hit hardest are the poor and the young. Self-harm claims have risen in the last year by 333% and overdoses are up 120% among 13 to 18-year-olds. https://www.ucdavis.edu/news/covid-19-isolation-linked-increased-domestic-violence-researchers-suggesthttps://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9319401/Self-harm-claims-rise-333-overdoses-120-shocking-toll-pandemic-teenagers.html?printingPage=trueAll of that horribleness barely scratches the surface of the collateral damage of how we’ve handled the Coronavirus. There are also the endless stories of people not being able to say goodbye to their dying loved ones, women giving birth while wearing a mask and vomiting into them, and everything that used to be an afterthought becoming miserable. Have you taken your pet to the veterinarian lately? How about youth sports, let alone school? Even the grocery store is now a miserable and sad experience. But we did it all because of Covid. For the last year we have been told over and over again that Covid was all that mattered and everything about life had to change because of it.And yet, as all of Europe locks down again and we’re told to brace for a 4th wave in America, hundreds of thousands of migrants from Latin America are coming to America and being released into the country…and most aren’t even being tested for the virus. Those that are, aren’t forced to quarantine, and when they do find out someone tests positive, they also don’t contact trace the other migrants they made the trip with. https://apnews.com/article/is-us-mexico-border-in-crisis-explained-aea57dde734f5cccb920e0d5d6111e65https://www.valleycent

Rob's Soapbox - Sick

E

People are always musing about “how the Roman Empire fell,” and what exactly will cause the same to happen to America. I’ve cracked the code; America will fall because of sick.I realize that “sick” isn’t a thing in and of itself. You can “feel” sick, you can be mentally “sick,” you can possess “sick” humor, and you can act in a “sick” manner, to name a few. But sick on its’ own is static. You can’t touch it, feel it, etc. I submit to you that in all forms America is going to fall as a result of sick. We’re simply a sick nation in every way and there is no antidote. We need to be eradicated as currently formed and rebuilt. Quite candidly, for the first time in my entire life, I actually embrace the idea of carving the nation up, a la Europe, into smaller pieces. Maybe three ideally; the looney left, the whacko right, and the smallest of the three, sadly, those of us who are still sane, logical, and free thinking. For starters, it was confirmed in multiple ways last week that we are now quite literally a nation that is terrified of getting sick. Just sick…y’know, the sniffles. While we’ve been trending that way for years, it only took this pandemic to lurch us over the edge. We discussed a new survey in which Americans were asked if, once the pandemic was declared over, they would still wear face coverings, and an astounding 56% said they would. 25% said all of the time, 31% said in certain times of the year or settings like large gatherings. 56%!!! We received an email after that discussion that I didn’t read on the show but summed it up perfectly. The basic premise was that this listener, a man named John I think, had deduced that in the last almost year of wearing masks, neither he nor anyone in his family has gotten sick. Leaving aside the fact that his conclusion that this phenomenon is correlated directly to mask wearing is provably false is every way, it was his next statement that summed up our new found hysteria. He stated that since masks work for his family, they will absolutely continue to wear them moving forward to avoid getting colds, the flu, and whatever else he thinks he’ll be safe from. We know he’s far from alone from multiple surveys taken in the last many months and it’s unthinkable compared to just a year ago…and it’s not progress at all. The idea that, as a nation, we are collectively so scared of getting a virus or even the common cold, that we are willing to cover our faces in fear and do untold and irreparable harm to our dental and oral health, skin, and mental state to avoid such is appalling. And telling. https://today.yougov.com/topics/health/survey-results/daily/2021/03/10/0fbf0/3I assume I barely need to even mention the most obvious way in which we’re sick? Health-wise? There’s a very simple reason America has more Coronavirus deaths than any other nation on Earth and it isn’t Trump, anti-maskers, Sturgis, holiday travel, or any other lie you’ve been told. It’s 100% because we’re the most unhealthy nation on Earth, most specifically as it relates to things that will make you more prone to dying from Covid; obesity leads the way, followed by diabetes, kidney disease, high blood pressure, and respiratory disease…all things America leads the world in by far. This is the price of decadence and freedom. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-9338761/More-73-Americans-die-COVID-obese-CDC-data-show.html?printingPage=trueThirdly, we’re beyond mentally sick. We’re depraved. And what’s fascinating about it is that we all think we’re not sick and “the other guy,” is. No matter the topic. If you’re pro-life you think a pro-choicer is “sick.” If you wear a mask and your neighbor doesn’t, he’s just “sick.” If you’re a Democrat and she’s a Republican she’s just “sick,” and on and on it goes. There is zero mutual respect for dissent in this nation; a nation that was built and thrived on such. Thus, we’re sick.An accompaniment to that would be the sick way in which we have allowed ourselves to be talked to over the past year and the even sicker way we have fallen in line. Last Thursday, President Joe Biden gave his first national address and it made me sick. Ironic, eh? His endless use of words like “can,” and “allowed,” in conjunction with threats that if we don’t “comply,” we’ll have things “taken away from us,” was beyond the pale and far from unifying.“Millions and millions of grandparents who went months without being able to hug their grandkids can now do so,” said Biden Thursday night, disregarding the millions and millions of grandparents who have made the choice of their own free will to continue hugging their grandkids and are alive and well today. “The more people,” he continued, “who are fully vaccinated (we) will provide additional guidance on what you can do in the workplace, places of worship with your friends as well as travel.” What we CAN do? Or what? Considering the fact that about 1/3rd of the nation has been doing all of the things you’ve told us we can’t do without an

Rob's Soapbox - One Year Ago

E

Last year at this time we were unknowingly living our last week of normal. Yup, it’s only been a year.12 months ago, the NBA and NHL were playing basketball and hockey games nightly in front of tens of thousands of fans in indoor arenas. Professional golf was a month away from its’ first Major tournament of the season, the Master’s, to be played in front of hundreds of thousands of fans over the course of 4 days. My wife and I were already looking forward to summer vacation, just over 3 months away, when we’d head to Los Angeles and see Ricky Gervais perform live. Heck, the entire RAD show was already working on major giveaways for listeners to go with us to see Tool in June, Aftershock in October, and even Joe Rogan in December.Broadway was bustling, gyms were packed, there were endless lines of cars at schools every morning and afternoon, and it was only a year ago that if you suddenly desired an ice cold draught beer, you didn’t have to think twice about pulling into the nearest bar and ordering one. This week in 2020, you could actually pretty much do anything on a whim. A quick pop-in to the grocery store was an afterthought, not a dreadful checklist of whether or not you had a face-covering handy and a discussion with yourself over how badly you wanted food versus how miserable the experience was about to be. Wanna go to dinner Friday night? Sure…that’s just a matter of picking the place, not first finding out if the place is allowing dining indoors, or if it’s even still in business. There are endless things we took for granted and to be clear…we SHOULD HAVE. Lame attempts at trying to put a rosy perspective on how appreciative we’ll be moving forward are just that; LAME. We should not, in any way celebrate the things we’ve lost over the last year, especially since we don’t know how many of them we’re even going to get back.Remember that a year ago? Remember having legitimate reason to actually be hopeful? To plan things and not have 1,000 what-ifs-related-to-Covid enter your mind? And I Don’t just mean plan to go to the movies, I mean your 2, 3 and 5-year plan. There is absolutely no logical, reasonable justification to believe we have any idea what the entire planet is going to look like in those years ahead. That’s not to say, at all, whatsoever, that we have the option of not living, of not controlling our own lives, and not finding happiness. That remains the essence of what we must do. But as we approach the one-year anniversary of fundamentally altering our lives forever, it is useful, helpful, instructive, and painful to remember how we were all living one year ago, and why we should be living that way again far sooner than we probably ever will be.I admit I’m not the biggest people person, but I sure do miss seeing people, strangers, smiling. Hell, I miss seeing their damn faces. I miss not having to ask people if they still shake hands or hug. I miss not having to ask people if they were “comfortable” going out or coming over. I miss seeing my dad.A year ago, if one of our dogs had an issue, the thought of going to the vet was actually a pleasure. Now it’s a nightmare for all involved, most notably the animals. I know my mom won’t mind me sharing that she wound up in the ER recently…nothing serious, and she’s fine, but she’s also over 80 and that occasionally means you don’t ignore something that should be checked right away. While it’s funny to say “one good thing about Covid is that I didn’t have to spend the day at the ER with my mom,” (since visitors/guests aren’t allowed), it’s actually not funny. Waiting endlessly on the other end of a text message to find out how someone you love is doing when you SHOULD be there helping them ask questions and comfort them is not pleasant…nor is it right. Which reminds me of another “joke” that needs to stop. The assertion that Covid has made it acceptable to be a slob is not something positive. It’s perfectly fine for any one of us, at any time, to take a comfort day or two…Christ, we all even fall into ruts now and then and just give up for a while; it’s called life. The idea that we’re normalizing not caring at all about our appearances is abhorrent. Every single one of us has a “look,” when we try and that’s a good thing. Why? It’s right there in the sentence! It means we’re TRYING. To encourage people to just give up entirely on a major facet of living a social life is disgusting, especially in light of all of the known mental health devastation we’ve caused in the last year. Incidentally, people that say they miss “dressing up,” piss me off. This is one of the few things that hasn’t been taken away from us; if you wanna dress up, do it, dummy. Have a fancy dinner at home, or (gasp) find a restaurant doing indoor dining and have a date night. They still exist, it just takes a little effort (synonym for try). Also, stop saying you enjoy and/or appreciate less traffic on the road. No one hates other drivers as much as I do, but traffic is a sign of co

Rob's Soapbox - Instant Herd Immunity (and why it won't happen)

E

While out at dinner with fellow super-spreader friends, the absurdly obvious solution to achieving immediate herd immunity was stumbled upon; and then immediately dismissed out of hand for obvious reasons. As we were violating “orders” to not dine indoors (at a completely packed and non-socially distanced restaurant) we spewed droplets all over each other and those around us as we laughed uproariously and loudly. As we did, we kept noticing that we were literally the only 4 people who walked in without masks, and never put one on as we made our way to and from our booth, the restroom, and the front door.We discussed our shared visceral disdain at people who remain sheepishly compliant even when there is no reason at all to do so. The restaurant didn’t even have the obligatory “masks mandatory” sign posted, nor were they enforcing any guidelines…and yet, the self-enforcement was essentially 99.9% (we were the .1%). Even as we were leaving, we couldn’t help but eye-roll our way through the parking lot as we saw people walking outside, alone, wearing their damn masks. Complacent isn’t a strong enough word at this point.During dinner, one woman got up to go to the restroom, took a few steps and realized she wasn’t wearing a mask (as she walked right by all of us dining mask-less, far closer to her than 3, let alone 6 feet). She stopped in her tracks, grabbed a napkin from the only empty table in the place, and covered her face with it as she went on her way. She returned a few minutes later with the same napkin being held over her nose and mouth. I think I literally (and quite accidentally) laughed right in her face when I saw it happen. Fortunately, if I happened to be infected, she is safe, for I had a bowl of pasta in front of me and the presence of food somehow kills the Covid virus because…SCIENCE!During dinner we discussed the lunacy of everything we’re being told about the vaccine and wondered how in the world our society remains so willfully ignorant. Oh, I should mention at this point, that one of the super-spreaders at the table is a doctor. With that said, as a reminder, the following are facts from the CDC:The vaccine protects you from getting sick if you contract Covid-19You can still get the virus, but your body will fight it off with anti-bodies and you’ll be fineThe vaccine does not protect ANYONE other than you (unless and until 75% of the population has had the vaccine and herd immunity has been achieved). For those reasons, we are told that even after getting vaccinated, we must wear masks, since we are still able to spread the virus. In fact, none other than Dr. Doom himself, Heir Anthony Fauci, said last week that Americans should expect to wear masks into 2022…and he went even further by refusing to say that life will ever be “normal” again if by “normal” we mean 2019 America https://www.marketwatch.com/story/will-we-still-be-wearing-masks-in-2022-when-will-life-return-to-normal-dr-fauci-cautions-it-really-depends-on-what-you-mean-by-normality-2021-02-22We have come to expect such dire prophecies from Fauci because he is a glass-half-empty, be as scared as possible type of person. Additionally, his gloom-and-doom predictions are almost always spot-on because, after all, he’s the man trusted to make the very policies that are enacted. This is akin to me predicting what will be on the RAD Radio show tomorrow. Trust me, if I predict it, the content will come.Don’t get me Fauci…I mean wrong. Don’t get me wrong, that’s what I meant. Fauci has made many dire predictions that haven’t come true, but those have been about various virus spreads and results; things out of his control. Fauci said many times that Florida was behaving recklessly with the virus and that California was the gold standard; and yet, nearly a year later, wide-open Florida has identical case and death rates when compared to vastly locked-down California. Speaking of Florida, it’s been more than 3 weeks since the Super Bowl and all of the subsequent super-spreader events that we were told by Fauci were going to lead to another nationwide surge as those folks went back home…waiting….waiting…I think we’re going to be waiting for a while for that surge.https://www.foxnews.com/politics/biden-coronavirus-california-floridas-similar-covid-numbers-beyond-explanationhttps://www.businessinsider.com/super-bowl-parties-could-be-superspreader-events-say-the-cdc-and-dr-fauci-2021-2All of this got us thinking aloud and swiftly evaluating yet again, how wrongly we’re handling this as a nation. In the past 6 weeks, the goal-post for herd immunity has been moved from summer to fall to Christmas. Meanwhile, the goal-post for losing the masks has been moved from “when we reach herd immunity,” to “2022.” HUH? Further confusing things is the CDC guidance that if you’ve been vaccinated, and are then knowingly exposed to the virus, you no longer need to quarantine…even though you’re still contagious. And since you’re still contagious, that’s why you nee

Rob's Soapbox - The FAQ's About The Covid Vaccine

E

See what I did there? FAQ’s…as in “frequently asked questions,” but when said aloud it also sounds like “facts,” as in “the truth.” Eh? Eh?The last year has been maddening and riddled with endless misinformation combined with a lack of understanding and an unwillingness to find actual facts and truth. Logic, common sense, and critical thinking are extinct; and none of what we’ve already experienced compares to the shit-show we’re all about to live vis a vis the Covid-19 vaccine.I have incredibly intelligent, well-informed friends who are walking around believing and repeating total falsehoods about the vaccine. I’m not talking about whacko anti-vaxxers…I’m talking about people who are literally contradicting known science and everything that is being said, published, and written. This isn’t like the mask debate; it’s worse. Much, much worse.Part of the blame, like usual, lies at the feet of the inept federal government and their total inability to formulate coherent policy statements, but most of it is our fault. Willful stupidity and ignorance on the part of the America public will make 2021 worse than 2020. You heard it here first. So, let’s begin with the Frequently Asked Questions…FAQ’s…get it? My answers are as objective as I can possibly be and supported by numerous links to various articles and posts from both the media and the CDC. Enjoy.IF I’VE BEEN VACCINATED, IS IT SAFE FOR ME TO BE AROUND UNVACCINATED PEOPLE?That depends on your definition of “safe.” YOU are safe. If you believe the reported science, the vaccine protects you from symptoms of the virus. If you are exposed to Covid, the vaccine will make sure that you don’t exhibit or feel symptoms. Someone who has tested positive for Covid-19 could sneeze in your face and you’ll be fine…others, however, won’t. This is where your personal morality comes into play. Once vaccinated, you’re immune, but you’re still able to spread the virus if you contract it. The vaccine doesn’t prevent you from getting the virus, it prevents you from getting sick from it. You’re still contagious to non-vaccinated people. So, you decide; are you your brother’s keeper, or is that everyone else’s problem? https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/facts.htmlhttps://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/coronavirus/expert-answers/visits-after-covid-19-vaccination/faq-20506463https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/it-safe-visit-grandparents-after-getting-covid-vaccine-n1257920IF I’VE BEEN VACCINATED, ARE OTHER PEOPLE SAFE AROUND ME?Absolutely not. Unless and until herd immunity is reached and the virus becomes weak to the equivalent of the common cold, your vaccination is completely and totally irrelevant to anyone else. This is why it’s lunacy for people to claim that because their husband has been vaccinated, the family is safe. Conversely, vaccinated people demanding that they will only congregate with other people who have bene vaccinated is equally asinine and ignorant. https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/it-safe-visit-grandparents-after-getting-covid-vaccine-n1257920WHY AM I BEING TOLD I STILL HAVE TO WEAR A MASK AFTER I’VE BEEN FULLY VACCINATED? See previous answers. Getting vaccinated ONLY protects you (until enough people have done so and we achieve herd immunity). The vaccine merely wards off all symptoms of the virus. You can get infected, but won’t feel the effects of it. However, you still have the virus and can spread it. Whether or not you wearing a mask stops the spread is a debate long since passed…https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/faq.htmlhttps://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2021/01/12/956051995/why-you-should-still-wear-a-mask-and-avoid-crowds-after-getting-the-covid-19-vacWHAT IS THIS I AM HEARING ABOUT THE VACCINE ONLY BEING GOOD FOR 3 MONTHS? This is not quite fake news, but it’s close. Everyone is forgetting that we’ve been living with this virus for less than a year, thus we only know what we know. We’ve had the vaccines for about 90 days, so do the math. We know that the vaccine provides antibodies for at least 3 months. There’s no indication that we’re all going to have to get shots every quarter of every year. Multiple experts have said that based on what we know about the human body and its’ history with viruses, it is very likely that the immune system will remember the virus if re-exposed later on, and then produce new antibodies.https://medicalxpress.com/news/2020-12-moderna-vaccine-confers-months-immunity.html#:~:text=The%20Moderna%20COVID%2D19%20vaccine,months%2C%20a%20study%20showed%20Thursday.IS THE COVID VACCINE SAFE?This is an unanswerable question for anyone with intellectual credibility. No vaccine in history has been manufactured and approved so quickly and, as of this writing, 50 million Americans have received their shots and we have less than 2 months of data from them.Mathematically speaking, side effects are occurring at a much higher rate than the flu shot, but still to a very small p

Rob's Soapbox - Congratulations, You Woke Up!

E

Twenty-five years ago, comedian Chris Rock famously riffed on the divide in the African American community between black people and “N-words.” The latter, he said, would always brag about accomplishing and doing things that were considered by the rest of us as things you’re expected to do; most famously, taking care of your kids. While in 1996, the bit was viewed as a black-on-black joke designed to be that community’s version of acknowledging that all cultures and races have their own version of “white-trash,” it turned out to be sadly prophetic for the entire country and culture writ large.Enter 2021; where we celebrate the most mundane and basic things as actual accomplishments. We brag about 19-year-olds who no longer live at home. We actually hold “graduation ceremonies” for kids segueing from elementary to middle school and middle to high school. Good luck getting a job with either of those diplomas, dipshit.I have friends who own small businesses that have to thank their employees who actually show up on-time for their shifts. After a year of Door-Dashing and Instacarting, we’ve become a nation that celebrates when our orders show up as we asked them to. The RAD show gets emails on a regular basis from people who brag about working 40 hours a week…40 HOURS A WEEK…that’s 2 ½ days of work for a successful person, who, BTW, would never brag about it, for God’s sake. Jesus Jumped Up Christ.Where did this all begin? No one knows for certain, but I’ve got a pretty good idea. For starters, congratulating people for getting pregnant is something that needs to be banished into the ash heap of history. There are 267 babies born every minute on this planet; there is absolutely nothing miraculous or impressive about giving birth; far less impressive is merely getting pregnant, which, if you consider abortion statistics breaks out to about 555 women getting pregnant every minute on Earth. You have literally accomplished absolutely nothing special by getting pregnant. More than 90% of the planet between the ages of 15-44 can do so at any time by merely humping. And if you’re in that unfortunate 10% that can’t, and wants to…sorry for your troubles. For reference, 140 million babies are born worldwide each year, while 75 million abortions are reported, and about the same number are miscarried. Do the math…getting  pregnant is almost the most simple, basic thing we do on earth behind breathing. So, congrats on that breath! Way to inhale! HIGH FIVE!!!Yes, yes…I realize that we’re not usually congratulating people on the fact that they were able to become pregnant, but rather on the imminent joyful birth of their endless burden…errr….I mean baby, but you get my point. Or, maybe you don’t.I trace all of this to the 1990’s; a glorious decade to be alive and, apparently, to also plant the seeds of America’s destruction. The economy was booming, America was at peace, and the most important things we had to worry about were making sure we saw Seinfeld, counting our calories from fat, finding SnackWell cookies, debating the emergence of grunge music, preparing for Y2K, and always having a water bottle in our hands. In other words, we quite literally had to make up things to worry about; and boy did we.The 90’s saw the launch of the self-esteem movement in schools across the nation, in which we told children they were special, when they clearly weren’t. This was the decade that saw us begin to give out 7th place trophies, and award kids for merely “attending” school, not thriving at it. We even created “new math,” which quite literally was defined as whatever the kid said was the answer, was deemed to be correct. 2+2=5? Yup! Well done.We even started basing kids’ grades not on subject matter and correct answers, but also on politeness, honesty, truthfulness, kindness, courage and conviction. Don’t believe me? That line was taken from a 1990 New York Times Article about the emergence of the self-esteem movement; we saw it coming, we knew it was stupid, and we did it anyway, all in an ill-fated effort to coddle our children; who now make up the majority of America’s adult population and cheer the most mundane and asinine things as accomplishments. https://www.nytimes.com/1990/03/28/garden/using-self-esteem-to-fix-society-s-ills.htmlThe oddest thing to me, about this, is the manner in which the very generation that created this mess, mine (Gen X), has also embraced it. Absolutely nothing about the way in which those of us over 40 were raised resembles the way we raised our children. It’s like the entire decade of the 90’s was opposite day…for 3,652 days in a row. Damage done, and, to this day, accepted and even cheered, and then not. I have endless friends in their 40’s who complain about the “younger generations,” and how entitled and lazy they are. These same friends have their adult children, in their mid-20’s, living at home with them, jobless, and “finding themselves.” HUH?News Flash: You are not special. As the movie “Th

Rob's Soapbox - The Minimum Wage

How little we can possibly pay people to work is back in the news and so is the endless debate over America’s minimum wage. As per usual, everyone is wrong on this subject. On the left, my idiotic Democratic friends argue for what’s called a “living wage,” which is nothing more than a trojan horse for ultimately sending money to people, regardless of whether they are working or not, to ensure that they have enough to “live.” If you Google the phrase “Universal Basic Income,” you will see endless stories of moron after moron from Mark Zuckerberg to Andrew Yang and everyone in between all the way to Bernie Sanders espousing the virtues of taking money away from those who work to earn it, and handing it to those who have no interest in, or intention of, ever working. Raising the minimum wage under the guise of guaranteeing people the ability to afford a certain level of lifestyle is the first step towards Universal Basic Income. It’s un-American and an instant non-motivator. It traps and keeps people under the thumb and control of government (which, in turn, keeps them voting for those who support it). Capitalism is the American economic system and it has transformed and transitioned more people from the depths of poverty and despair to wealth and prosperity than any other idea or system ever devised. In our system, people are paid based on what the market states that they’re worth. It has never been designed to be “fair,” or equitable. That’s why teachers, police officers, and members of our military make 10% of what some moron who owns and hosts a successful radio show does. There’s nothing fair or equitable about that, but it’s what the market has determined we’re all worth. As for the minimum wage, it was, and never has been, designed to be a living wage. It’s a jumping off point; you get a minimum wage job in high school to get into the work force and start gaining experience and working your way up. Minimum wage jobs are not careers…they’re not even really jobs; they are the first rung on the ladder to whatever your definition of success is. Democrats, Liberals, and Progressives need to stop trying to fundamentally alter the greatest economic system on Earth and recognize that life is not fair and was never intended to be. Some people will fall through the cracks…usually, as a result of their own unwillingness to do what it takes not to. Meanwhile, my moronic Republican friends argue that the free market is the be all and end all…let the chips fall where they may, the cream will rise to the top, the strongest will survive, and all of that other macho bullshit that doesn’t actually manifest itself in the real world. The minimum wage was created in 1938, at the height of the Great Depression, when people were literally willing to do anything for anything. Americans were so desperate that they were living a real-life version of “Name That Tune,” but it was “Name that Job and Wage.” People would line up to inhale sewage and when the guy in front of him said he’d do it for 2 cents, the next guy said 1 cent. Thus, the minimum wage, as a form of protection for working people, was created. And there’s nothing wrong with that. Capitalism needs rules, boundaries, and safeguards, and, more importantly, a bare basic minimum price needs to be placed on humanity, lest we repeat horrors of our past and lurch backwards into slavery…for, there are people, in their most desperate moments, who will agree to work for no money, and mere shelter; even if they’re shackled while doing so. Additionally, conservatives argue (stupidly) that raising the minimum wage will increase the prices we all pay for goods and services. This is provably untrue; we have the data. At no time in the history of the nearly 100-year existence of the minimum wage in America has it ever led to an inflation of prices. Screaming that an increase in the minimum wage will lead to “$14 Big Macs!!!” Is as stupid and lazy as accusing President Obama of being a Muslim. There were legitimate reasons to criticize President Obama and his policies, just as there are legitimate arguments against draconian increases in the minimum wage. There’s no need to make shit up to make your point. For example, we know that minimum wage hikes, when forced on businesses too quickly and with too great an increase, costs people jobs. Bosses, managers, and corporations don’t raise prices, they merely decrease their workforce to absorb the costs. Those left standing happily pick up the slack of the terminated, for they’re just thankful to still have a job (and in most cases are making more money)! With all of that said, there is an absurd argument going on right now about raising the minimum wage in America. The federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour and has been for a dozen years. While almost no one actually makes that little anywhere, that isn’t the point. Inflation has skyrocketed in the last 12 years and, most notably, the last 12 months. Ev

Rob's Soapbox - We've Cured The Flu!

E

My wife is constantly encouraging me to do more positively themed soapboxes. I’ve told her that the very nature of having a platform to share my views implies negativity because no one really wants to listen to someone saying everything is great. But, she’s right…it doesn’t have to be negative ALWAYS. And so, this week, I come to you with amazing news.Congratulations, America! In addition to such great contributions to the world such as Jazz, Thomas Edison, potato chips, and the credit card, The United States has once again bestowed upon the world another gift; we have cured the flu!The viral disease that we came to know as influenza in 1933, but more commonly has been referred to simply as the flu, has been ravaging the Earth for 6,000 years, but it has taken America only 10 months to eradicate it from the globe. All hail the Red, White and Blue.As many as 650,000 people in the world die every year of the flu…well, they used to. Now, and forever more moving forward, the number will essentially be zero. You see, we are nearing the end of the annual flu season in America and lo and behold, basically no one has gotten or died from it. Astounding doesn’t begin to explain it. On average, 50,000 Americans die every year of the flu, including 200 children…almost 800,000 of us wind up in the hospital as a result! Not anymore!Do you want to know why? Well, it’s all those fantastic masks and social distancing, of course. Thank God for our brave and heroic leaders. All of this, of course, is complete provable bullshit. But, it makes for a great story and reenforces how brilliant the worlds’ health experts and politicians have been. It also gives them a launching pad for never ending power and control. Every fall moving forward will be declared “mask season” and people will be told to cover their faces from October to March to STOP THE SPREAD of the flu. No hugging, touching, feeling (#Journey) or indoor dining, either. I mean, my God…you might catch a sniffle and we can’t have that anymore.Let’s start with the dishonesty and work our way towards the stupidity, lunacy, and criminality of all of this.Flu cases, hospitalizations, and deaths are, and always have been, based entirely on estimates and mathematical extrapolations. For starters, do you even know anyone who has ever been tested for the flu? Brandon is literally the only person I have ever met who has. Our ability to test for the flu is beyond lame; the test we have is only good if someone is tested within 48 hours of getting ill…and prior to making everyone stark raving made over a sore throat, no one ran to the doctor with initial symptoms of the flu. Doctors simply diagnose patients as having the flu based on observation, then they report those numbers and the CDC and WHO put that information into a giant calculator and tell us all how many people got and/or died from the flu.Shift to now. The one place no one wants to be is anywhere near a doctor’s office or hospital. After nearly a year of scaring the living hell out of people on every level, many of us refuse to go near a medical facility even if we are sick. Since 99.97% of all people under 50 survive Covid, and since many employers will insist you stay home (many without paying you) if you test positive, there are a lot of us walking around with stuffy noses, sore throats, and a mild fever hiding it. Those who do seek treatment almost always do so virtually, since doctors don’t want you spreading the dreading Corona, and they diagnose you, via a Zoom call, as having Covid. You are, what we call, “presumed Covid.” Yes, that’s a thing…Google it. No one presumes the flu anymore, we all presume Covid. That’s a hell of a way to eradicate the flu; just assume no one has it.Those who do seek treatment often do so well after the first 48 hours of symptoms because they’re hoping and praying, they don’t need to go near a hospital. Once they do, if they even are given a flu test, they of course test negative, since it’s well past its’ incubation period. Ironically, they also test negative for Covid, but they are PRESUMED to have Covid because…well…SCIENCE. Thus, no flu.As for the children, of course they’re not getting the flu sine we aren’t letting them go to school in much of the country, nor play sports or have play days. But wait…How is it that half of the country spent the holidays traveling and visiting loved ones, mingling households, not wearing masks, hugging one another, and being told that they were surging the spread of Covid, and yet no one got the flu? This makes absolutely zero sense! And there it is…no sense at all. And we’re all falling for it over and over again. And what if…just for a moment…we grant them their asinine reality and cede that yes, the almighty masks and social distancing and working and learning from home are the reasons that absolutely no one is getting the flu (even though millions of people are)…have we truly, really, honestly, sunk so low that this is the life we choose? We’re s

Rob's Soapbox - Don't You Dare Be Happy

E

ROB’S SOAPBOX FOR THE WEEK OF JANUARY 24, 2021DON’T YOU DARE BE HAPPY! As my wife Christina would say: “What are we doing here?”With almost no ability to agree on anything anymore, one thing that all sane, lucid Americans would concur on is that we have done deep, intense, and devastating damage to our psyches this past year. We’d never agree on whose fault that is, what should or shouldn’t have been done, or pretty much anything else, but we’d all agree that we’re far from knowing the full mental, emotional, and psychological damage we’ve done to our society as a whole. And then there’s the children…Jesus, what we’ve done to our children…So, given that, can we just stop with the terrible and the fear and the “things are never ever going to get better?”We will no doubt never again be like we were one year ago…but things will get better than this; if we allow them to, but we don’t even let ourselves be happy, positive, joyful, or hopeful about anything at all anymore. Not as a collective.Remember the dreaded “Holiday Surge?” We were all told not to have the audacity to spend Christmas and New Year’s with family and friends. Endless messages included asinine tag lines like “stay apart this year so we can all be alive next year.” And yet, we still traveled. We traveled in record setting numbers for 2020 with more than a million people flying every single day for 10 days in a row!! Oh, the humanity!!!This horrified the almighty experts. Endless dire predictions came hurtling at us of a holiday surge caused by all of the travel, indoor blending of multiple households, and irresponsible behaviors like hugging people we loved. Hospitals would be overrun; it would be worse than it was in April, and July, and September COMBINED!!!And yet, this weekend, it was revealed that it never happened. Not to the extremes we were all told were inevitable. Not even close. Now, that might seem hard to believe if you’ve spent anytime watching or reading news or social media, but that doesn’t change the facts of the matter. As reported by none other than “The Washington Post,” one of the nation’s largest newspapers and a first-class cheerleader of panic porn as it relates to Covid:The United States (has) avoided the worst-case coronavirus scenarios that officials feared would overwhelm hospitals in the aftermath of Christmas and New Year’s gatherings…Hospitals had braced for enormous spikes in patients that could have forced rationing care, exhausted already limited beds and sparked a nationwide shortage of health-care workers. But officials across the country said those dire predictions — a wave of severe Christmas cases weeks after a rapid increase from Thanksgiving — did not materialize.”Other than Los Angeles, which is a Covid disaster zone on every level, this report mirrors what people in the health care industry around the country have been saying out loud to anyone who would listen; no biggie…shoulder shrug…this is what it’s like every other year when flu season spikes…we’re used to it.This should be celebrated. Christ, it’s a miracle it’s even being reported! But, lest you think this is a positive thing, don’t you dare! Don’t for one second think that maybe we’ve finally achieved some level of herd immunity to build on. Don’t even begin to believe that there’s any sort of light at the end of the tunnel because that light is actually a train bearing down upon us ready to end every one of us! In that same story, first paragraph, they make sure that you stay as terrified as you must:After starting the article reporting that “The United States (has) avoided the worst-case coronavirus scenarios that officials feared would overwhelm hospitals in the aftermath of Christmas and New Year’s gatherings…” they immediately threw cold water on any inkling you had to, for even one moment, let some weight lift off of you:“But experts caution that the threat from the virus has not diminished and could intensify with the emergence of new variants.”In fact, the overwhelming body of the article is dedicated to more dread, fear, and foreboding:“Hospital leaders and experts are still on edge. Variants of the coronavirus…could result in further case spikes in cold weather months when people are more likely to be indoors. And the availability of the vaccine, while offering lifesaving protection to millions, could also lead to a false sense of complacency, particularly as it can be difficult to obtain… The American Hospital Association says “No one should be fooled that we are in an easy period right now,” said Nancy Foster, the group’s vice president…“The cold hard data says we were on the brink in many places, many communities across the country.”https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2021/01/23/coronavirus-christmas-surge/Well of course we’re on the brink…we have to be. All of the time. Death, sadness, despair has to be right around the corner all of the time because it sells…and it controls. It isn’t just Covid, either.Just in the last few

Rob's Soapbox - My (No Doubt First Of Many) 2021 Meltdown

E

There is no coherence to this soapbox, nor is there meant to be any. It’s late Monday on MLK day and I’m already way past my self-imposed deadline for when this should have been written and recorded…in other words, I’m having a 2021 day. I’ve taken great schadenfreude over the past year watching moron after moron believe that there was light at the end of the tunnel. The pandemic and our related troubles would end with Memorial Day…then Independence Day…then Labor Day…then Election Day…and certainly when 2020 was over. This was always lunacy. There was never any reason to believe that we were going to get our lives back at any of those times, or any time in the near future. We’re less than a month into 2021 and we’d all be wise to call it a second wasted year. Here’s to 2022. So, it comes as no surprise to me that I’ve emotionally melted down this weekend. The endless amount of shit we all have to deal with, piled on top of actual life, is more than enough to break all of us at times; and that’s the key…making sure it’s temporary. We’ve been talking a lot on the show the past few weeks about self-care and self-love, which is more important now than ever and this is one form of my self-care…writing; so, indulge me, if you will. My weekend began with an amazing date night with my wife at a locally owned restaurant that happens to be run by an African American family which will become a salient point later; bear with me. From there…family issues that will remain private; a grave injustice foisted upon my wife via law school, and then getting caught up on “Your Honor” on Showtime (an amazing show starring Brian Cranston) followed by the HBO documentary on Tiger Woods…and I just lost it emotionally. For those that don’t already know…I’m married to a black woman. She’s extraordinary and beyond any of my childhood dreams…which is important to the point of this rambling because as a result of the emotions stirred inside of me this weekend, I started to seek out my favorite teen music; Whitney Houston, Toni Braxton, Sade, and Anita Baker. All Black women. I remembered, as I watched their music videos, being so stupidly infatuated with every one of them. All of them incredibly talented and, to me, so beautiful in ways I didn’t understand. I’ve always been drawn to and infatuated with women of color and yet only recently have had the opportunity to truly explore and indulge in it. Believe it or not, I grew up in a time when America was only beginning to come to grips with the proper equal role of African Americans. I was 17 when the first black quarterback led his team to a Super Bowl victory…because, prior to Doug Williams (no relation) doing so, it was common knowledge that black men were too stupid to run an NFL offense…something I heard repeated well into the 21st century by now former friends of mine. I get it…this is all very personal. And it’s easy to dismiss my emotions by saying or asserting that I am only feeling them because I’m married to a black woman…and you’d be right; and that’s what has made me so emotional. I’m trying to figure out my role in this mess that we’ve created. It’s 2021…and yet, people are still protesting and, worse, rioting over racial injustice. Many of them are nothing more than opportunists and anarchists, but that doesn’t take away from the legitimacy of their grievances. I live it…and have…every day for 6 years. I see how my wife is treated differently. I see how she’s suddenly treated better when I, a white man, am beside her. It’s real and it’s despicable…and I have to slap myself sometimes to remember that it’s actually 2021. Jesus. Without getting specific, my wife was denied an exemption by her law school that has been granted to other students with identical experience, grades, attendance, and credentials…all of whom were white. Christina and I are the last look for and/or ever play the “race card,” but how do you not go there when something like that happens? The Tiger Woods Documentary on HBO highlighted the extraordinary levels of racism he grew up with…and he’s younger than me for god’s sake! He was kicked off of golf courses because of the color of his skin…in my lifetime. We all reach our breaking points; now more than ever, and I just couldn’t take it anymore. I remember Kevin…literally the only black kid at my high school of 1200 students in Pleasanton, California. I met Kevin years before high school in the park near my childhood home. He pulled a knife on me when I was about 12. I have no recollection of why, I just remember being scared out of my mind and putting my hands in the air hoping the knife wasn’t going to be plunged into my gut. For whatever reason, it ended peacefully and I ran home. In 1983, it would have been so easy to call the police and have Kevin sent to Juvenile Hall. White boy says what? That’s all it would have taken…especially in Pleasanton in 1983. My father…in all of h

Rob's Soapbox - Corporate America Teaches Life

E

For years I have been railing against my (mostly conservative) friends who would sing the praises of big business while decrying the notion of big government. When I would point out that the two walk lock-step with one another, their favorite go-to line was “Well, if I have to choose, I’d rather choose big business.” That’s the point; there is no choice, because there is no difference, and no light between them; a fact that has played out right before our very eyes over the past 10 months; big business has thrived during the pandemic and seen profits explode while more than 100,000 small businesses have closed forever, with tens of thousands more about to. https://www.cnbc.com/2020/09/16/yelp-data-shows-60percent-of-business-closures-due-to-the-coronavirus-pandemic-are-now-permanent.htmlhttps://jacobinmag.com/2020/06/coronavirus-pandemic-2008-bailout-wall-street-rich-stimulus Meanwhile, the few large corporations that were financially impacted received extraordinary bailout funds (disguised as “loans” which will be completely forgiven) while the paltry PPP program for small business was a pittance akin to feeding the peasants gruel while the elites dined on Lobster Newberg. https://www.visualcapitalist.com/the-anatomy-of-the-2-trillion-covid-19-stimulus-bill/https://www.merchantmaverick.com/ppp-loans-survey-not-enough/ And yet, I would assert that in a perfect world, every American would work for Corporate America for at least one year. I was recalling my time working for a broadcasting company recently and realized all of the life lessons the experience gave me. Not merely related to success, finance and business; but also, to interpersonal relationships, the art of communication and manipulation, the burden of knowledge, and most importantly, the unfairness of life. Not the unfairness of the big-bad American Capitalist System; the unfairness of life in all its’ forms. In my mid 20’s I was a middle manager in a mega-million-dollar corporation with one direct boss in the building that I worked that I reported to. He reported to his three bosses, scattered around the country, who all reported to the big boss. And so, begin the lessons. As the Operations Manager for our five Reno radio stations, I oversaw around 35 employees and everything that related to the stations being on the air: engineering, air talent, contests & events, and the production and execution of all music and commercials that aired. In the industry, I oversaw what radio calls the “programming department,” and with that, came the oversight of the “programming” budget, which, if you are an ambitious soul, sounds a lot more exciting than it is. “Oversight” didn’t mean control. It meant containment; and if I wanted one dollar more than what had been allocated to me, I had to crawl into my boss’s office and beg for it. If he agreed, he had to do the same to his boss, and so on up the chain, all the way to the big guy. And more times than not, no matter how well I was doing my job or my stations were performing, the answer was “no,” in my boss’s office, and the discussion was over. Thus, I slunk back to my (smaller) office and started getting creative; adapting and finding another way to achieve the goal I had set because I had to. After all, if I knew my idea would improve ratings, and was refused funds to execute it, that didn’t make my idea wrong! Additionally, if I didn’t execute my idea in whatever way I could make it happen, and my department’s performance suffered, I’d be the one to pay for it. Self-preservation can be a hell of a motivator. As overlord of the programming budget, every October I was given a dollar figure which I was to distribute over my departments and employees for the next 12 months beginning in January. I had no say over the dollar figure, and maddeningly, it wasn’t tied at all to my departments’ performances. In fact, one year, after extraordinary ratings on all of our stations and flawless execution…my budget was cut. You see, while the stations had performed beyond impressively, the sales staff at the time had failed to convert those ratings into revenue. And since revenue is a fancy word for “money,” there was less to go around. And since it’s the sales staff that actually brings in the revenue, that department’s budget couldn’t be cut because they needed to attract better salespeople, and it takes money to attract talented people. In fact, their budget increased. So, my team and I had out-performed on every level and now I had to make cuts in our departments; meanwhile, the side of the building that massively underperformed was being handed more money to spend. There is nothing fair about that. Making it worse, was the burden on my shoulders now. If you haven’t surmised, it was now solely my decision who would keep their jobs and who would lose their jobs…on a team that as a collective was achieving all of its stated goals and more. Oh sure, I could just c

Rob's Soapbox - The Humor of 2020

Regardless of your view on the Coronavirus, almost every single human alive is experiencing Pandemic Fatigue. If you’re genuinely terrified of the virus, you are exhausted seeing people ignore guidelines and warnings and refusing to wear masks. If you’re a covidiot, you grew tired of lockdowns and fear mongering before summer and you just want to live with the virus and tell those who are afraid to be the ones who stay home. If you’re a small business owner, you wonder how much longer you’ll survive and your sleepless nights are countless. Basically, the only person not suffering pandemic fatigue is Jeff Bezos. In times like these, we need to laugh. In fact, throughout much of 2020, the only way to cope with the lunacy we’ve all seen and experienced has been through humor. Sadly, much of it has been through the prism of laughing AT the decisions and rules imposed on us. Speaking of being exhausted, we’re all tired of either pointing out how stupid the Covid rules are, or wondering why more people don’t see it as clearly as some of us do. We’re all tired of the mask debate, just for different reasons. Most people don’t understand why we aren’t all just wearing masks and being good citizens, while some of us simply can’t comprehend how people can’t see clearly that they make no difference at all, whatsoever, anywhere…especially when the evidence of proof is endless. Rob's Soapbox - The True Story of Thanksgiving (Updated)

On November 3, 2008 I originally printed the essay below. We have reprinted it each year since on Thanksgiving weeks, with small alterations to address issues of the time, and it never ceases to garner a huge reaction. In 2020, more than ever, people need to be reminded of the positive roots of their nation…and despite what you’re told seemingly on the daily, there are some positive things about America. The story below is 100% provably true (and footnoted accordingly), and the fact that most of you have never heard it before is scandalous to say the least - For the full soapbox visit radradio.com and click to Rob's SoapboxSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
