159: Working in vs. on the PMO
Welcome to the PMO Strategies Podcast + Blog, where PMO leaders become IMPACT Drivers! PMI Talent Triangle: Power Skills (Leadership) Hey, IMPACT Driver! How much time do you spend working IN the PMO vs. working ON the PMO? If you feel like you’re constantly busy but not necessarily making progress toward your bigger PMO goals or if you’re spending so much time working ON services and capabilities that your stakeholders are not seeing any real tangible value, then you need to correct that balance fast! In this episode, I’ll explain what I mean when I say, “Give them what they want before you give them what they need.” And why it’s critical to do both in the right balance for you and your PMO to be successful long-term. By the way, if you’ve been on the fence about joining the IMPACT Engine PMO program, this is the time to do it! We’re going to put plans in place for each of our coaching students next month to address that perfect balance for each of their specific situations so that they can continue to build credibility quickly while also addressing the long-term strategic benefits that the PMO needs to become the IMPACT Engine your organization needs to thrive. 136: Why Templates and Tools Aren’t Working
Welcome to the PMO Strategies Podcast + Blog, where PMO leaders become IMPACT Drivers! PMI Talent Triangle: Business Acumen (Strategic and Business Management) Hey there, IMPACT Driver! Have you ever tried to put process, templates, and tools in place to fix the project management challenges you are experiencing on your projects only to discover that you don’t get significant improvements? I mean, you should, right? You were asked to setup a PMO or up level capabilities and your business leaders said that you needed to improve project management. You look around and you clearly see that the project process could use improvements, so you do what you were taught…you fix project management. In episode 134, I explained why “fixing project management” doesn’t usually fix the underlying problems that are breaking the project delivery stage in the first place. In this episode, we’ll cover why you: hit so much resistance when implementing templates and process don’t see major improvements when fixing the project delivery problems make the situation worse when you put tools in place too early And then we’ll talk about what to do instead… Thanks for taking the time to check out the podcast! 135: After the Project – Delivering ROI
Welcome to the PMO Strategies Podcast + Blog, where PMO leaders become IMPACT Drivers! PMI Talent Triangle: Business Acumen (Strategic and Business Management) Hey there, IMPACT Driver! In episode 134, I shared why “fixing” the project delivery process probably isn’t going to solve the underlying problems your organization has that are preventing them from achieving their desired business outcomes. Now, we’ll explore another opportunity to show value with the PMO that does not involve making any changes to your project delivery process and supports the work I recommended last week. In this episode, you will discover ways to improve what happens AFTER the project is delivered. You’ll learn how to ensure the organization is realizing not only the benefits of these projects but that these projects were worth doing in the first place. 134: Don’t Fix Project Delivery First
Welcome to the PMO Strategies Podcast + Blog, where PMO leaders become IMPACT Drivers! PMI Talent Triangle: Business Acumen (Strategic and Business Management) Hey there, IMPACT Driver! Last week, I held a live workshop to help PMO leaders build their 2022 PMO Road Map. (You can still grab the recordings, templates, and resources at this link through the end of January.) And during this workshop, we used several assessment tools I provided them to determine the areas of focus based on recognized pain points the PMO could solve. Then, we worked to define solutions to those pain points. And that’s where it got interesting… Many PMO leaders mistakenly see symptoms of an underlying problem and start building solutions around those symptoms instead of addressing the root cause. This is dangerous. So, when you hear…“We need to fix project management.”“Projects take too long.”“Projects cost too much.”“Resources aren’t getting enough done.”“Why can’t we ever deliver our projects as planned?” And you start to fix…The templatesThe toolsThe processThe project managers …but nothing gets better… It’s because the underlying root causes are still there. Are you as excited as I am to set yourself up for a high-IMPACT 2022? I’ve got so many fun projects in the works to help you this year and this first one is going to be so much fun. In this episode, we’re looking at why conducting a regular health assessment for your PMO is an absolute must and how to figure out exactly what your PMO should focus on to drive the biggest IMPACT. In this episode, I’m pulling back the curtain to share with you a few of the secrets that have made my IEPMO Implementation program students so successful over the years. Plus, I’ll walk you through the exact steps they take to discover exactly where they should focus their PMO efforts, what services and capabilities to build, how to bring change to the organization properly, and specifically what to do to get that critical stakeholder support. You don’t want to miss this episode!
