Ep 207PPP 207 | Accelerating Your Agile Journey, with author Johanna Rothman

Your Agile Journey If you spend enough time leading projects, you can't miss the fact that agile approaches continue to gain in popularity. What seemed initially relevant to only software development projects is now increasingly being used outside of software. Whether you're a believer or a skeptic, agile is not a passing fad. It's also not a cure-all. There are plenty of skeletons and shipwrecks on some people's journey to agile. In this episode, I'm joined by one of my long-time friends and favorite experts when it comes to leading agile projects: Johanna Rothman. Johanna is the author of a new book entitled Create Your Successful Agile Project, and I'm excited to introduce you to some ideas in the book. Ep 204PPP 204 | How to Build an A Team, with author Whitney Johnson

How To Build an 'A' Team A continual challenge for those of us who lead teams and projects is this: how can we help our team perform at their best? Project demands are only growing and the only way to meet those demands is to have a high-performing team, yet how do you do that? How do you build an 'A' team? Whitney Johnson has some ideas about that and includes them in her new book Build an A Team: Play to Their Strengths and Lead Them Up the Learning Curve. Once you hear how her S curve works, you're going to find yourself calling back to it over and over. Learn more about Whitney and her work at https://whitneyjohnson.com/. Let's Stay In Touch! Ep 200PPP 200 | Why Too Many Project Managers Are Dying for a Paycheck--And What You Can Do About It, with Jeffrey Pfeffer

Sustainable Pace There are so many ideas in agile project management that I appreciate, and one of my favorites is the principle of sustainable pace. The idea of sustainable pace is that whatever effort we're putting into our projects, we should be able to sustain it for the long haul. This agile principle acknowledges that our ability to deliver value is harmed when we're not maintaining a sustainable pace. Now we all would nod our heads that sustainable pace is a good idea, but in practice, many work cultures are far from it. In fact, in conversation after conversation I hear executive coaching clients and audience members talk about dealing with the other extreme—long hours, working on weekends, and high levels of stress. The problem is serious and to mark this special occasion of episode 200, we are joined by Stanford Business School professor Jeffrey Pfeffer. Jeff is the author of Dying for a Paycheck: How Modern Management Harms Employee Health and Company Performance--And What We Can Do About It. If you lead people, I believe this is a must-read. 'When To' Instead of Just 'How To' We are faced with all kinds of decisions that require us to figure out what to do. The world is filled with books that tell us How to do things, but here's a thought.... Could it be that When To is just as important--maybe even more important--than How to? That's the premise of a new book from my guest today, Daniel Pink. Dan joined us back in episode 88, and he's back to talk about his new book entitled When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing. Ep 195PPP 195 | How to Have a Conversation With That Stakeholder Who Drives You Crazy (And Anyone Else), with NPR Host Celeste Headlee

The Lost Art of Conversation George Bernard Shaw once said "The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place." As leaders of teams and projects, that's a serious problem since so much of our success depends on our ability to communicate effectively with those around us. For all the wonders of technology, one of the unintended consequences is we're getting worse at the art of conversation. There are plenty of studies to back this up, but I think the point is intuitive to us all—-there's more talking, for sure, yet perhaps less true conversation than ever. To help us become better at conversing with even the most difficult stakeholder, we're joined in this episode by Celeste Headlee to talk about her new book We Need to Talk: How to Have Conversations That Matter. It's related to her famous TED Talk, which I've included below. For Your Administrative Assistant! If you have an administrative assistant, here's an idea for how you can invest in them! Ep 194PPP 194 | How to Get to Yes Without Manipulating, with author and influence expert Tim David

Influencing Skills for Leaders For those of us responsible for leading teams and projects, there are a core set of skills we need to develop. We need to manage our time. Deal with conflict. Develop relationships across the organization. We need to think strategically and learn to deal with change. Oh yeah, and develop confidence as we do all of that! All of these are true. But one area that I see over and over that most of us need to develop has to do with our ability to influence. Regardless of your level in the organization, project managers and leaders are constantly faced with situations where we need to influence team members, bosses, customers, and other stakeholders. And more often than not, we have to do that influencing without authority. To help bolster your ability to influence without being a jerk, I'm joined today by Tim David to talk about his new book TRUE Influence: The Magic of Human Connection. It's packed with practical lessons to help you further develop your influencing skills. For Your Administrative Assistant! If you have an administrative assistant, here's an idea for how you can invest in them! Our Effective Administrative Assistant Webinar Series starts up soon. Ep 189PPP 189 | How to Tame Your Nerves Before the Big Meeting, Presentation, or Exam, with Harvard Business Review Senior Editor Dan McGinn

"Calm Down" Doesn't Work What is something in your near future that's causing you to feel nervous? For example: A certification exam that you'll be taking soon A presentation you need to make to your senior management A tough conversation with a team member of stakeholder An interview for a job you really want When you're faced with having to perform and the stakes are high, it's normal to start feeling nervous. But there's little evidence that just telling someone to "calm down" will provide any benefit. In fact, it might make it worse. So, what does work? HBR Senior Editor Dan McGinn has a new book that takes on this very topic. In Psyched Up: How the Science of Mental Preparation Can Help You Succeed, Dan shares evidence-based insights on how you can overcome your pre-performance anxiety. What allows you to walk onto the stage or into the testing center or into that meeting room with the eye of the tiger? Dan shares his insights in this episode. During the recap of the interview, I mention the following episodes, which I recommend for further learning: Presence: Bringing Your Boldest Self to Your Biggest Challenges, by Amy Cuddy. Amy builds off her ever-popular TED Talk about using the "super hero" pose and shares ideas on how to be more confident and assertive. My interview with Amy is at http://www.PeopleAndProjectsPodcast.com/142 Performance Breakthrough: A Radical Approach to Success at Work, by Cathy Salit. Shakespeare wasn't kidding when he said "All the world's a stage!" Cathy suggests that every interaction is a performance, and when we can see life through that lens, much growth and learning is possible. If only we could get them to change, then we could deliver our project, or make progress as a team. If only we could change them.... You might not say it that way, but when we face obstacles in the form of people, we're apt to consider them the problem. But what if I told you there's a way to improve the likelihood of getting that other person to change? And it starts with you? In this episode we're talking with Mitch Warner from The Arbinger Institute about their book Leadership and Self-Deception: Getting Out of the Box. It's a must-read book that I look forward to introducing you to in this episode. Learn more about The Arbinger Institute at http://arbingerinstitute.com/. Also, here's where you can find the other books that Mitch mentions in the interview: The Anatomy of Peace. This is a continuation of the story that starts in Leadership and Self-Deception. The The Outward Mindset. This takes the ideas and presents them in a form to help you implement the ideas from the fictional story. Ep 180PPP 180 | The Surprising Science Behind Why Everything Project Managers Know About Success is (Mostly) Wrong

Do Nice Guys Finish Last? Common wisdom tells us that we will be successful if we work hard. Be nice. Show up. It all makes sense, right? The project manager who reliably shows up each day and delivers should be the one who gets promoted, right? Eric Barker took a deep dive into the research of success and found that it's not quite that simple. In this episode, we talk with Eric about his new book Barking Up the Wrong Tree: The Surprising Science Behind Why Everything You Know About Success Is (Mostly) Wrong. Ep 179PPP 179 | Tough Conversations, Uncomfortable Challenges, Delivering Bad News: How Successful Leaders Reach Outside Their Comfort Zones

Just Take the Leap? It can be uncomfortable to confront a team member or a peer. We can face demanding challenges, wondering if we have what it takes, hesitating to go "all in" because of the risk of failure. Delivering bad news is something leaders have to do, but rarely do we look forward to it. These are just a few of the challenges we face as leaders--each requiring us to reach beyond our comfort zone. It's one thing to know that good things are on the other side of our comfort zone. But just telling someone to "take the leap" seems to be insufficient, right? Andy Molinsky has studied why we hesitate to go beyond our comfort zones, and he's written a practical, evidence-based book on how to make the leap. In this episode, Andy and I talk about his new book Reach: A New Strategy to Help You Step Outside Your Comfort Zone, Rise to the Challenge and Build Confidence. Do You Know Where Your Phone Is? Most leaders these days know the answer to that question. Of course we know where our mobile devices are! And if we didn't, we might be at risk of nomophobia! But the reason this question is easy is that too often, the device is in front of our face! And our addiction to tech is having a real impact on our ability to lead and connect with others. Adam Alter joins us to talk about his new book Irresistible: The Rise of Addictive Technology and the Business of Keeping Us Hooked. Ep 174PPP 174 | 5 Strategies for Staying Productive and Happy in an Age of Shiny Objects, with author Amy Blankson

Is Tech Making Life Better or Worse? Tech is ruining our life. Or at least that's what plenty of people are suggesting. There's evidence showing that culturally we're more depressed and distracted than ever, and tech has at least some responsibility for that. Yet at the same time tech is providing rich opportunities to grow and learn. So which is it? Is tech making it more difficult to thrive? Or is it helping us thrive? According to Amy Blankson, the answer is both, depending on how you use it--today and in the future. Amy joins us to talk about her new book The Future of Happiness: 5 Modern Strategies for Balancing Productivity and Well-Being in the Digital Era. In Amy's research, she's found that ultimately the most balanced, satisfied, and happy individuals use five key strategies, not just to survive but also to actually thrive in the Digital Era: They stay grounded in the face of distraction. They use technology to know themselves on a deeper level. They know when and how to use technology to train their brains to reach their full potential. They structure their surroundings to create a habitat for happiness. They innovate consciously to enrich the world around them. I look forward to sharing Amy's insights with you in this episode. Constraints are.... Good? Timeframes. Budgets. Staffing. Project managers constantly face confounding constraints on their journey to deliver a project. Constraints limit our options. They seem to make it more difficult to deliver. And they might be exactly what we need, according to author Scott Sonenshein. Scott is the author of the new book Stretch: Unlock the Power of Less--and Achieve More Than You Ever Imagined. Scott relates why being MacGyver-like, adaptable to the constraints we encounter, can help us not only be more successful, but happier as well.
