The Struts Life 10: Backstage in Devizes - Stories from Jed’s Youth
This week, we’re taking a detour from the typical tales of rock ‘n’ roll life to dive into Jed’s roots. Contrary to popular belief, Jed isn’t from Bath—Google got it wrong! He’s actually from the quaint market town of Devizes. Nestled just outside of Bath, Devizes is rich with history, built around the magnificent Devizes Castle. It’s a place where merchants once peddled their wares to castle-goers, and today, the town still hosts a bustling farmer’s market. Jed paints a vivid picture of Devizes, highlighting its vibrant arts community and unique events, like the annual confetti battle—a quirky tradition where cannons blast confetti into the air. This picturesque town, though small, holds a special place in Jed’s heart. Despite its modest size of about 16,000 people, Devizes boasts a robust cultural scene, including a two-week arts festival that kicks off with the confetti battle. Jed’s memories from his hometown, combined with his early days in Bath, reveal a charming, idyllic upbringing that contrasts beautifully with his high-energy life on tour. Stay tuned as we continue our hometown tour with the rest of The Struts! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ugly American Werewolf in London: Iron Maiden - Powerslave
EAfter a grueling 100+ date tour to support their Piece Of Mind album, no one would blame the boys in Iron Maiden for taking some well deserved time off. Instead, after 3 weeks off they went back to start writing and rehearsing for their next album, Powerslave, which would prove to be HUGELY important in breaking them in the US, South America and all around the world. Thanks to having the same lineup as the last album for the first time and a work ethic driven by Iron Maiden's eternal leader Steve Harris, the boys produced an album with the imagery and songs that would propel them to global superstardom. Derek Riggs artwork was at its finest for the Egyptian themed cover and would also be the backdrop of the incredible stage setup of one of the most epic tours ever. On almost 200 dates in 11 months covering 28 countries including going behind the Iron Curtain, the tour nearly broke every member of the band at some point. However, with radio friendly hits like Aces High and 2 Minutes 2 Midnight, Maiden got on the UK charts. But it was their proggy epics like the title track and Rime Of The Ancient Mariner that solidified IM as a unique act in the heavy metal world. Plus, Maiden would record their timeless live album and home video Live After Death at the Long Beach Arena in California on this tour which introduced millions to the band around the world. As it turns 40, The Wolf & Action Jackson go track x track and relive some fond memories from Powerslave. Shout It Out Loudcast: Episode 286 "Lick It Up"
EThis week Tom & Zeus review the 1983 pivotal album, "Lick It Up" This was KISS' 11th studio album and the 23rd KISS studio album reviewed by SIOL. Lick It Up was the first studio album from KISS without the makeup. Before the release, the band was on MTV and unmasked with MTV VJ the late great J.J. Jackson and premiered the video for Lick It Up. This was the first (and last) credited album with Vinnie Vincent as a member. First not to have Ace Frehley credited as a member. First KISS album without any outside songwriters credited on an album. The album was produced by Michael James Jackson, who had just produced the previous album, Creatures Of The Night and the four original tracks on the compilation Killers. This was a critical point in KISStory. The band taking off the makeup was a big gamble. However, Paul kept thinking the audience was listening to KISS with their eyes and they needed to make this change. Now without the makeup, KISS was competing with their contemporaries on a even playing field. How did they do? Well, the album brought them back to not just gold status, but platinum. The addition of Vinnie Vincent was a difference maker. His guitar playing was great, but the energy he brought with his songwriting was just so evident. He co-wrote 8 of the 10 songs on the album, including the legendary title track, Lick It Up. The guys discuss the album cover, the videos and make a few bold statements about the album and the band with Vinnie Vincent. As usual the guys breakdown and analyze the tracks and rank the songs SIOL style. As always, they then compare the album and album cover and rank it against the previous studio albums reviewed. So tune in to find out if All Hell's Breakin' Loose after this album gets discussed and ranked and if the partnership of Frehley & Cusano have to file Chapter 11... Performance Anxiety - Robyn Hitchcock
EToday’s guest exemplifies perseverance; and not just with his music but with this podcast. There were a few technical issues which have, hopefully, been overcome with clever editing. Welcome the one and only Robyn Hitchcock. He’s written a memoir about his life in 1967. In fact, it’s called 1967, How I Got There And Why I Never Left. It’s a very unique take on a memoir that works so well. But before we hit on the book, Robyn helps me set things up by going over his life BEFORE 1967. He also talks about things that happened AFTER 1967, like forming The Soft Boys and why they broke up and then reunited at one of Matthew Seligman’s parties. Robyn talks about his solo career, why he went solo in the first place, and why he considers himself the reverse of an innovator. We also discuss some of the unique aspects of his solo work; like teaming up with Grant Lee Phillips, doing a film project with the late, great Jonathan Demme, and after decades of being a singer/songwriter, releasing an album that is entirely instrumental. Once we do get into the book, itself, there are even more amazing stories, like discovering Bob Dylan, learning a bit about guitar, and attending The Happening with Brian Eno. Did you know Eno was the app, developed in 1967? That’s a science fact. Another science fact is how good his memoir is. So go grab it from Akashic Books, Little Brown Books, or wherever you buy books these days. Follow Robyn @robynhitchcockofficial on Instagram & @robynhitchcock on X. Follow us @PerformanceAnx on both. Grab merch at performanceanx.threadless.com. Contribute to our coffee fund at ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. The Struts Life 09: From Pub to Stage - Gethin's Journey in Llanddewi Brefi
EIn this episode of The Struts Live, we're diving into the roots of our Welsh drummer, Gethin Davies. Picture this: a tiny village called Llanddewi Brefi, with a close-knit community of about 500 people, where Geth grew up in a bustling local pub run by his parents. This pub wasn't just any pub; it was the heart of the village, alive with music, laughter, and even the occasional visit from famous musicians. Geth shares some truly nostalgic memories from his childhood, painting a vivid picture of a life filled with colorful local legends and the rich history of his hometown, including the notable Synod of Brefi. But it's not just about the past—it's about the cultural essence of Wales that shaped Geth. He opens up about the significance of the Welsh language in his upbringing and the laid-back, community-centric vibe that comes with it. From amusing tales of local characters to the legendary 70s LSD bust that put the village on the map, Geth’s stories are as engaging as they are enlightening. This hometown tour series is just getting started, and you won't want to miss the rest as we uncover more about the places and experiences that have shaped The Struts. STREAM IT EVERYWHERE In this penultimate Season 6 episode, I swim around in a topic I’ve been reluctant to get back to: people who have created amazing and often iconic work, yet whose behavior and/or beliefs make them reprehensible to one degree or another. I lay out the premise, and then use musicians and others as examples to further discuss. And, unlike in my Michael Jackson episode, this time around I come to some very concrete conclusions. What’s your take on all this? We’ve all consumed works by heinous people. Which of those do you still appreciate? Which if any have you shunned? Only Three Lads: The Incredible Rock n' Roll Stories of The Hollywood Stars, Part 1
EThe Hollywood Stars were THE "It Band" on the Sunset Strip in the early '70s. Originally concocted by legendary Hollywood impresario and cult figure Kim Fowley to be LA's answer to New York Dolls, the Stars' mix of glammed-up hard rock and pop hooks made them mainstays at clubs like the Whisky a Go Go and the Starwood. Bands like Journey, the Runaways, and Quiet Riot opened for them. Iggy Pop joined them on stage. John Lennon attended their performances. Their songs were covered by Alice Cooper ('Escape') and KISS ('King of the Night Time World'). Every major label wanted to sign them, eventually recording a debut album in 1974 for Columbia with Eagles producer Bill Szymczyk. But fate had other plans for the Hollywood Stars...a shake up at Columbia's west coast division led to the band being dropped before the album was released (and would remain that way until 2013, when Shine Like A Radio: The Great Lost 1974 Album surfaced), and the original incarnation of the band broke up. The remnants of the band would finally release an eponymous debut album for Arista in 1977, but that was effectively the end of the Hollywood Stars' story...until now. Following the success of their archival release, the band would get back together in 2018 for live shows and new recordings, with original lead vocalist Scott Phares returning to the fold. Their brand new 2024 album, Starstruck, finds the band in fine, rockin' form. The current version of the band also includes a veteran guitarist with more incredible rock n' roll stories to tell, Jeff Jourard. Jeff played with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers during the recording of their first album - the motorcycle jacket you see Petty wearing on the cover was Jeff's - but his departure from the band as they left for England meant that his sole credit on the record was a "Heartfelt Thanks." After that, Jeff teamed up with Martha Davis to form the Motels, co-writing their oft-covered classic 'Total Control.' The amount of unbelievable stories was far too much for one episode, so we are treating you to a two parter that you will not want to miss! Part 1 includes the first half of our discussion, but stay tuned for next week's conclusion when we talk about our Top 5 LA Albums! Proudly part of the Pantheon Podcasts family. Ugly American Werewolf in London: First Concert Memories #13 - Rush with Gerry of Something For Nothing Podcast
On the 13th edition of the monthly sidecast from The Ugly American Werewolf in London Rock Podcast, we relive a special night in the life of Gerry Schramm. As the co-host of the Something For Nothing Rush Fancast, Gerry is devotee of Rush for 4 decades. But Gerry didn't hear them on the radio and explore their catalog or have a friend share their record collection with him to find Rush. Instead, one one night in New Jersey in 1986, Gerry and his high school friend and future co-host Steve had an extra ticket and needed a ride to a concert at The Meadowlands that night. And Gerry was up for anything. So together they embarked on the first of more than 25 Rush shows for Gerry - the one that would hook him immediately that night and deeply for life. Hear from teenage Gerry how the set built from hit to hidden gem and the level of musicianship blew him away. Learn what it's like to behold a solo from The Professor Neil Peart himself and marvel at the fact that no one is leaving during the drum solo. Ugly American Werewolf in London: Motley Crue - Dr. Feelgood
EAugust 28, 1989 saw the release of Dr. Feelgood, the album that would solidify Motley Crue as a sleazy, sunset strip band that had hit the big time. It included songs you would expect from Motley (She Goes Down, Slice Of Your Pie, Rattlesnake Shake) but thanks to producer Bob Rock also included 5 singles that hit the charts in the US. The band tries to be tender in spots (Without You, Time For Change) but stays true to themselves with adrenaline boosters like Kickstart My Heart, Same Ol' Situation and the title track. And though they were all over MTV and touring to huge crowds around the world, all was not right in Crue World. The band were all sober at this time. And while that might have led to better work in the studio and more consistent live shows, it also made personalities clash. This would prove to be the last album from the original line up until 1997 and certainly the last to make the sort of cultural impact the band made in the 80s. Did the more polished studio sound from Bob Rock create band factions? Did sobriety and wealth cause them to grow apart? Did the Crue just implode before they faded away? Several singles have already been released: "The Last Bottle On Earth" (Ron Keel Alone/Acoustic); the Ron Keel Band's "Hard On The Outside / Heart On The Inside)," which has achieved airplay on SiriusXM and rocketed to #1 on the 97Underground.com radio chart; and now, the new Keel classic "Moving Target" (the first new song from that band in almost 15 years) is available as an instant download with the iTunes pre-order of KEELWORLD. And the first new Steeler track in over 40 years, "Give Me Guitars (Or Give Me Death)," will be accompanied by a big-budget music video directed by David Pear (The Dead Daisies), to be released in conjunction with the Black Friday blue vinyl edition. Performance Anxiety - T Bear
EToday’s guest has been through it. But he hasn’t let it stop him.Welcome T Bear to the show. Born Richard Gerstein, he grew up spending time in both New York City and the Caribbean. He was playing pretty early on. In fact, he was invited to his first studio session at the age of just 17…by Richie Havens! Soon after, he was discovered by the KISS camp and began writing with the band. That helped him secure his first record deal, which led to the name change and a disco smash hit called Sunshine Hotel. Yeah the 70’s were wild! Now rebranded as T Bear, he continued writing, recording, and playing with artists like Stephen Stills in Manassas and Crosby, Still, & Nash as well as his own solo albums. He has some great stories about recording the Daylight Again album. But after spending time writing with Stills and working with Greg Kihn and others, T Bear went on a 25 year hiatus. He talks about what happened, what he was doing instead of music, and what (and who) brought him back. He has recently released a new album that has some amazing cameos and a killer core band. It’s called The Way Of The World and if you like songs that tell stories, you’re going to love it. T Bear opened up and was very candid about some of the rough times he’s gone through and I’m grateful I can now call him a friend. Go grab the album, on Quarto Valley Records. Follow him on social media @richard_tbear on Instagram and T. Bear on Facebook. Follow us @PerformanceAnx on socials. Grab our merch at performanceanx.threadless.com. Only Three Lads: Label Spotlight - 2 Tone Records w/ Daniel Rachel
EIn 1979, 2 Tone Records (formed by Coventry, England art student and Specials keyboardist/songwriter Jerry Dammers) exploded into the consciousness of music lovers in Britain, the US, and beyond, as albums by the Specials, the Selecter, Madness, the Beat, and the Bodysnatchers burst onto the charts and a youth movement was born. 2 Tone was black and white: a multiracial force of British and Caribbean musicians singing about social issues, racism, class, and gender struggles. It spoke of injustices in society and fought against right-wing extremism. It was exuberant and eclectic: white youths learning to dance to the infectious rhythm of ska and reggae, crossed with punk attitude, to create an original hybrid. This week's Third Lad, Daniel Rachel, has penned the definitive story of the label that, for a brief, bright burning moment, shaped British, American, and world culture. Too Much Too Young: The 2 Tone Records Story is out now from White Rabbit (UK) and Akashic Books (US). Daniel Rachel is a Birmingham-born, best-selling author whose previous works include Isle of Noises: Conversations with Great British Songwriters; Walls Come Tumbling Down: The Music and Politics of Rock Against Racism, 2 Tone, and Red Wedge; Don't Look Back in Anger: The Rise and Fall of Cool Britannia; The Lost Album of the Beatles: What If the Beatles Hadn't Split Up?; One for the Road: The Life & Lyrics of Simon Fowler & Ocean Colour Scene; and Oasis: Knebworth: Two Nights That Will Live Forever. He is also co-author of Ranking Roger's autobiography, I Just Can't Stop It: My Life in the Beat. In 2021, Rachel was a guest curator of the "2 Tone Lives & Legacies" exhibition as part of Coventry Cultural City 2021, and he curated the anniversary edition of the Selecter's debut album, Too Much Pressure. Prisoners of Rock and Roll -- When They Tried to Assassinate Bob Marley
EBob Marley is one of the most famous figures in reggae music. On December 3, 1976, seven gunmen stormed into Bob Marley’s home in Kingstown, Jamaica and opened fire, wounding the singer, his wife, and members of his inner circle. The assassination attempt came just days before Marley was scheduled to perform at a concert in Jamaica that was supposed to calm political violence in the country. Shot but not seriously wounded, a defiant Bob Marley performed at the Smile Jamaica concert anyway, and the incident also has a profound impact on his life and music. In this episode of Prisoners of Rock and Roll, we’re taking a look at the assassination attempt on Bob Marley: the details of the attack, the mysterious motives behind it, and the impact it had on Marley’s music and message. And of course, we'll pay tribute to Marley's enduring legacy and the powerful message of peace and unity that his music continues to spread. Episode Playlists No episode playlist for this one. Imbalanced History: Summer Vacay 2024: Johnny Cash At The Carousel
EThis is the original copy for the previous release of this episode on 12/26/21: "This episode is the story of a lost live album by the great Johnny & June Carter Cash, recorded shortly after the legendary Folsom Prison Live album. The contrast in energy of these two nights is stark, and part of the discussion. The mood the night of the show was appropriately laid back for San Francisco. The Carousel Ballroom, which would shortly become the Fillmore (West), hosted the April 24, 1968 concert, and tape was rolling, as was the case when Owlsley Stanley was at the sound board. He recorded most shows that he mixed, which gives purpose to his foundation's modern mission of preservation. This Carter-Cash album could do a lot of good in that area. Markus and Ray talk with William "Hawk" Semins and Pete Bell of The Owlsley Stanley Foundation, about this show, and their ongoing efforts to preserve this audio legacy! Then they're joined by John Carter Cash, legendary producer and artist, and son of John and June! He gives the family legacy's view of this show, among other things! An amazing way to explore this unexpected audio treat and to mark our 150th episode!!! Listen to this cool episode, and then get caught up here!!! Thanks to our sponsors, Crooked Eye Brewery for their support of the podcast!" And just like that! Summer Vacay 202 is a wrap! Look for fresh, new episodes, starting August 5th! Ep 177Love That Album 177 - Discussion with Georgia Rose Lucas, Carla Fuchs and John Penhallow about Sandy Denny's legacy
Sorry for this episode being a little late….I’d meant to get it out earlier, but who knows where the time goes????? If you’ve not deserted me…..Welcome to episode 177 of Love That Album. Carrying on with the Fairport Convention connection of episode 176, I welcome three wonderful guests to the podcast this time around – all connected to the great Sandy Denny. Firstly, there’s a return visit from John Penhallow, the first manager of Fairport. He’s done a lot of archival work in relation to Sandy’s music over the years, and we discuss that. Then, there’s Sandy’s daughter, Georgia Rose Lucas and musician / composer Carla Fuchs. The two of them are behind an album released in 2023 called Songbird. Carla composed new music to lyrics written by Sandy in her journals that were never previously recorded. The two of them collaborated to make this project come to existence. Not on the show, but huge thanks as well go to Elizabeth Hurtt, wife of the late Trevor Lucas, who took the time to tell me about the journey of these lyrics in Sandy’s journals. There had been a plan many years ago for many artists to utilise her words for new songs….that didn’t happen, but we explain what DID in the show’s discussion. Huge thanks to Elizabeth for filling me in. My gratitude to all these wonderful folk for taking the time to talk about the Songbird project, the Attic Tracks songs put out on cassette and then CD by John on Raven Records years ago, Redgum, and Sandy’s life and music. If you wish to search out a copy of Carla’s album, it’s available on Bandcamp at: https://talkingelephantrecords.bandcamp.com/album/songbird Download this episode of LTA from your podcast app of choice (not Spotify). Performance Anxiety - Side Projects: Song Structure (w/Steve Dawson & Mark Mallman)
EThis episode of Side Projects sees the return of Steve Dawson and Mark Mallman. They join me to discuss song structure. We go over some basic terms and structures that are typical and atypical. We talk about songs like The Wreck Of The Edmunds Fitzgerald by Gordon Lightfoot, Don’t Stop Believin’ by Journey, Stairway To Heaven by Led Zeppelin, and others. Is a successful song necessarily a GOOD song? Are streaming services, algorithms, & metrics changing pop song structures? Does the music delivery system (records, CD’s, streaming) play a part in the song structure that’s popular within that system? Steve studies the structure of a Taylor Swift song and Steve and Mark discuss where song structure might be headed in the future. Wrap up talking about Steve’s new album, which was recorded live, and Mark’s book, new music he’s writing, and how this conversation has inspired him.
