Ep 118See Hear Podcast - Interview with Simon Head, director of "Subversives: The History of Lowest Of The Low"
Every major city with a healthy music scene will have hometown heroes….that band or artist that the locals love and wish the whole world knew about. One of those bands is Toronto’s “The Lowest Of The Low”. Welcome to episode 118 of See Hear. The Lowest of the Low started in the early 90s as a follow up to the band punk band, Popular Front. Ron Hawkins had previously written overtly political songs, but for the debut album Shakespeare My Butt (one of the best album names ever), he wrote songs about ordinary people facing everyday pressures – so still political in its way. The history of the band is not an uncommon tale – friends get together based on common musical and ideological points of reference, members have “differences” and they split apart, years after the fact they reunite remembering the spark that got them started. However, their tale is still fascinating because they were true independents and were never going to sell their ideals downstream for a quick buck. Big companies came calling, but LOTL dictated terms all the way. Kerry was away, but Tim and I spoke with musician, tour manager for many Canadian bands, and film director Simon Head about his documentary “Subversives: The History of Lowest Of The Low”. As well as talking about the film, we spend time devoted to discussing the Toronto music scene of the early 90s and where it is now, friendship, Weddings Parties Anything and Billy Bragg, and Toronto as a film character. A huge thanks to Simon for joining us. As I mention in our discussion, I perceive from watching the film that the story of the wider Toronto scene was reflected in the Melbourne scene of the 90s….watch the film or listen to our conversation and see how it reflects your own city’s live music environment. The film is now available to stream on Apple TV or you can get a blu ray with a bunch of great extras. Only Three Lads: Jeffrey Clark (Shiva Burlesque, Torn Boys) - Top 5 Nor Cal Punk Singles
From the Bay Area to the Central Valley to the Redwood Forest, this punk rock was made for you and me. Since the late '70s, Northern California has been a hotbed of punk rock activity. San Francisco sat at the epicentre of the first wave, with bands like Crime, Dead Kennedys, Avengers, Chrome, The Mutants, and The Nuns bringing the house down at the legendary Mabuhay Gardens. East Bay bands like Green Day, Operation Ivy, Rancid, and The Mr. T Experience ruled the punk revival of the late '80s and beyond. But, all over the northern part of California, great bands sprouted up in cities like Stockton, Santa Cruz, Davis, and Fulton. This week, we'll cover some of the great punk singles from the area, from familiar favorites to obscure treasures. What better Third Lad for this assignment than Northern California alternative music legend Jeffrey Clark?!? Jeffrey got his start as the singer/songwriter in early '80s Stockton garage/psych/synth combo The Torn Boys, whose recordings were recently released by Independent Project Records as 1983. Following the demise of the band, Jeffrey departed for LA with Torn Boys bandmade Grant-Lee Phillips (later of Grant Lee Buffalo fame) and formed the moody, mystical, marvelous Shiva Burlesque, who released two LPs - their eponymous debut in 1987 and Mercury Blues in 1990. Jeffrey subsequently released two cinematic, gorgeous solo records - Sheer Golden Hooks in 1996 and If Is in 2009. But wait, there's more: This renaissance man also founded one of the most acclaimed film festivals in North America, the Nevada City Film Festival; he revitalized the legendary Independent Project Records with label founder/Savage Republic guitarist Bruce Licher; and, he co-produced the documentary Louder Than You Think: A Lo-Fi History of Gary Young & Pavement. Oh, and did we mention that he's practically a member of the Wu-Tang Clan?? Speaking of Louder Than You Think, you may recall our recent episode where we chatted with director Jed I. Rosenberg and co-producer Brian Thalken. We made sure to chat with Jeffrey about the film as well, so stay tuned for a separate mini-episode on Thursday for more of our discussion! Rock N Roll Archaeology 25: I Know What I Like: The Rise and Fall of Prog
Progressive Rock reached its zenith during the early 1970s, a period often celebrated as the genre's golden age. This era of Prog Rock has inspired intense opinions—both positive and negative—that rival those of any other rock movement or genre throughout music history. Fans of Progressive Rock are known for their passionate dedication. On the flip side, critics, including renowned voices like Lester Bangs, Robert Christgau, and Robert Hilburn, were notoriously dismissive of Progressive Rock. Despite their often harsh criticisms, we believe that time has proven them wrong. Our perspective has evolved, and we now view the best of 70s Progressive Rock as a genre with substantial depth and intellectual substance. The music from this era isn't just enjoyable; it’s some of the most significant work of the 20th century. Not all Prog Rock from this period hit the mark—there were certainly moments of excessive self-indulgence. However, the Prog bands and songs that have stood the test of time are truly exceptional and worth celebrating. Ugly American Werewolf in London: Kiran Roy of October Drift
One of the best things about having a rock music podcast is hearing new albums before the general public has the chance. Once The Wolf and Action Jackson heard the ringing guitars and soaring vocals of October Drift on their 3rd album, Blame The Young (out September 27, 2024), they wanted to spread the word far and wide. So they tracked down lead singer and lyricist Kiran Roy to talk to them about the making of the record, his song writing style and the growth of October Drift's popularity. Kiran and his bandmates Alex Bispham (bass), Chris Holmes (drums/vocals) and Dan Young (guitar) have taken a big step forward with their latest album and fans of 80s alternative music from the 120 Minutes days will love what they hear. From the raucous title track to the hard charging Don't Care to the triumphant and glorious finale Not Running Anymore you might hear bits of bands like The Smiths, The Replacements, Echo & The Bunnymen, REM and Psychedelic Furs. Hear Kiran uncover a bit about their writing process, how they came out of COVID stronger as a band and utilized some time together at an AirBNB to put together their best album yet. Also, you can hear bits of the three singles Demons, Blame The Young and Tyrannosaurus Wreck plus two early singles Robots and Airborne Panic Attack. It was a fun chat with an up and coming singer with a band set to embark on their first headlining tour of Europe this fall. Kiran's thoughtful and relatable lyrics connect through his harmonies with Chris Holmes and the ringing guitars classic alternative rock fans love. We may be a classic rock podcast but if we don't find a promote the current generation of rock n rollers, there will be no more rock n roll to love. So give it a listen and then go buy/download their albums! Shout It Out Loudcast: Album Review Crew Episode 55 "Metallica 'The Black Album'"
EOn the 55th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & special guest, comedian and podcaster Don Jamieson, review the 1991 legendary album by Metallica, the self-titled album known as the "Black Album." The "Black Album" was Metallica's fifth studio album. It propelled Metallica from a small, but dedicated fan base to superstardom. Led by frontman, main lyricist and rhythm guitarist James Hetfied, polarizing drummer Lars Ulrich, guitarist extraordinaire Kirk Hammet and bassist Jason Newsted. The album features five singles including a couple ballads, which were unheard of previously and the now classic, Enter Sandman. Although they did have a video for the previous album's single, "One", Metallica really utilized MTV and the music video format to propel the "Black Album." The album made it to Number 1 on the US Billboard charts and has now gone 16X platinum, making it not only Metallica's biggest selling album, but one of the biggest selling album in history. The album was produced by Bob Rock and although it may have been a tumultuous relationship, which was documented, the result cannot be denied. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. This was Tom's pick. So tune in to see if the album satisfies the purist or the newbie Metallica fan and if it makes them Rock Hard! Only Three Lads: The Incredible Rock n' Roll Stories of The Hollywood Stars, Part 2 - Top 5 L.A. Albums
Last episode, you heard the thrilling, incredible rock n' roll stories of the Hollywood Stars' Scott Phares and Jeff Jourard. This week, we conclude our epic conversation by revealing each of our Top 5 LA Albums! The Hollywood Stars were THE "It Band" on the Sunset Strip in the early '70s. Originally concocted by legendary Hollywood impresario and cult figure Kim Fowley to be LA's answer to New York Dolls, the Stars' mix of glammed-up hard rock and pop hooks made them mainstays at clubs like the Whisky a Go Go and the Starwood. Bands like Journey, the Runaways, and Quiet Riot opened for them. Iggy Pop joined them on stage. John Lennon attended their performances. Their songs were covered by Alice Cooper ('Escape') and KISS ('King of the Night Time World'). Every major label wanted to sign them, eventually recording a debut album in 1974 for Columbia with Eagles producer Bill Szymczyk. But fate had other plans for the Hollywood Stars...a shake up at Columbia's west coast division led to the band being dropped before the album was released (and would remain that way until 2013, when Shine Like A Radio: The Great Lost 1974 Album surfaced), and the original incarnation of the band broke up. The remnants of the band would finally release an eponymous debut album for Arista in 1977, but that was effectively the end of the Hollywood Stars' story...until now. Following the success of their archival release, the band would get back together in 2018 for live shows and new recordings, with original lead vocalist Scott Phares returning to the fold. Their brand new 2024 album, Starstruck, finds the band in fine, rockin' form. The current version of the band also includes a veteran guitarist with more incredible rock n' roll stories to tell, Jeff Jourard. Jeff played with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers during the recording of their first album - the motorcycle jacket you see Petty wearing on the cover was Jeff's - but his departure from the band as they left for England meant that his sole credit on the record was a "Heartfelt Thanks." After that, Jeff teamed up with Martha Davis to form the Motels, co-writing their oft-covered classic 'Total Control.' Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Prisoners of Rock and Roll -- Artists United Against Apartheid
EIn 1985, a group of musicians came together to raise awareness about the oppressive, racist government in South Africa. Organized by Steven Van Zandt, the group calling themselves Artists United Against Apartheid was, according to music critic Dave Marsh, “the most diverse line up of popular musicians ever assembled for a single session” and the list is pretty amazing.” Just some of the names include Bono, George Clinton, Peter Gabriel, Lou Reed, Kurtis Blow, Miles Davis, Ringo Star, David Ruffin, Joey Ramone, Run DMC, Keith Richard, Bruce Springsteen, Herbie Hancock, Bonnie Raitt, that dude from Midnight Oil, AND the Fat Boys. They jointly refused to ever play at Sun City, a luxury resort in South Africa that symbolized the racial segregation of South Africa, and they released a protest album called Sun City to raise awareness. In this episode of Prisoners of Rock and Roll, we’re diving into the history and impact of Artists United Against Apartheid. Performance Anxiety - Tom Kanach (KANAK)
EToday’s guest proves that hard work and patience will pay off. Welcome Tom Kanach of KANAK to the podcast. Tom is from New Jersey, so naturally we start razzing each other almost from the start. Tom talks about manipulating his situation so his brother would get an unwanted plastic drum set in order to start his first band. But he would really get serious about being in a band after a chance meeting in a school bathroom. Relax…everyone is a kid in this story. He’s been writing music longer than he can remember. He even has recordings of some of these songs. Maybe we can get him to re-record Happy Tonk Town for the next KANAK album. After doing what teenagers do (sneaking into clubs underage to see his favorite bands) he played in some bands with potential but could never seem to get the break they needed. But he made some great connections along the way. One of those connections had him playing with Doro on one of her albums. But after a while, life things happened. Tom started a family and got a job. But he never stopped writing. That’s why his first solo release is 30 songs long. Tom has a new project and it’s the best work I’ve heard from him. It’s called KANAK and it’s obviously a palindromic simplification of his last name. But that ended up complicating things, instead. The band and new EP feature some great players like Pete Wood, Jow Rowley, Jonny Rao, & Ed Stasium. Pick it up at kanakmusic.com or wherever you find music now. Follow them at KANAK Music on Facebook or @TomKanach on Instagram. Follow us @Performance Anx. Our stuff is located at performanceanx.threadless.com. Keep us awake with coffee money at ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. Now let’s get down to some serious business with Tom Kanach of KANAK on Performance Anxiety on the Pantheon Podcast Network. The Struts Life 10: Backstage in Devizes - Stories from Jed’s Youth
This week, we’re taking a detour from the typical tales of rock ‘n’ roll life to dive into Jed’s roots. Contrary to popular belief, Jed isn’t from Bath—Google got it wrong! He’s actually from the quaint market town of Devizes. Nestled just outside of Bath, Devizes is rich with history, built around the magnificent Devizes Castle. It’s a place where merchants once peddled their wares to castle-goers, and today, the town still hosts a bustling farmer’s market. Jed paints a vivid picture of Devizes, highlighting its vibrant arts community and unique events, like the annual confetti battle—a quirky tradition where cannons blast confetti into the air. This picturesque town, though small, holds a special place in Jed’s heart. Despite its modest size of about 16,000 people, Devizes boasts a robust cultural scene, including a two-week arts festival that kicks off with the confetti battle. Jed’s memories from his hometown, combined with his early days in Bath, reveal a charming, idyllic upbringing that contrasts beautifully with his high-energy life on tour. Stay tuned as we continue our hometown tour with the rest of The Struts! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ugly American Werewolf in London: Iron Maiden - Powerslave
EAfter a grueling 100+ date tour to support their Piece Of Mind album, no one would blame the boys in Iron Maiden for taking some well deserved time off. Instead, after 3 weeks off they went back to start writing and rehearsing for their next album, Powerslave, which would prove to be HUGELY important in breaking them in the US, South America and all around the world. Thanks to having the same lineup as the last album for the first time and a work ethic driven by Iron Maiden's eternal leader Steve Harris, the boys produced an album with the imagery and songs that would propel them to global superstardom. Derek Riggs artwork was at its finest for the Egyptian themed cover and would also be the backdrop of the incredible stage setup of one of the most epic tours ever. On almost 200 dates in 11 months covering 28 countries including going behind the Iron Curtain, the tour nearly broke every member of the band at some point. However, with radio friendly hits like Aces High and 2 Minutes 2 Midnight, Maiden got on the UK charts. But it was their proggy epics like the title track and Rime Of The Ancient Mariner that solidified IM as a unique act in the heavy metal world. Plus, Maiden would record their timeless live album and home video Live After Death at the Long Beach Arena in California on this tour which introduced millions to the band around the world. As it turns 40, The Wolf & Action Jackson go track x track and relive some fond memories from Powerslave. Shout It Out Loudcast: Episode 286 "Lick It Up"
EThis week Tom & Zeus review the 1983 pivotal album, "Lick It Up" This was KISS' 11th studio album and the 23rd KISS studio album reviewed by SIOL. Lick It Up was the first studio album from KISS without the makeup. Before the release, the band was on MTV and unmasked with MTV VJ the late great J.J. Jackson and premiered the video for Lick It Up. This was the first (and last) credited album with Vinnie Vincent as a member. First not to have Ace Frehley credited as a member. First KISS album without any outside songwriters credited on an album. The album was produced by Michael James Jackson, who had just produced the previous album, Creatures Of The Night and the four original tracks on the compilation Killers. This was a critical point in KISStory. The band taking off the makeup was a big gamble. However, Paul kept thinking the audience was listening to KISS with their eyes and they needed to make this change. Now without the makeup, KISS was competing with their contemporaries on a even playing field. How did they do? Well, the album brought them back to not just gold status, but platinum. The addition of Vinnie Vincent was a difference maker. His guitar playing was great, but the energy he brought with his songwriting was just so evident. He co-wrote 8 of the 10 songs on the album, including the legendary title track, Lick It Up. The guys discuss the album cover, the videos and make a few bold statements about the album and the band with Vinnie Vincent. As usual the guys breakdown and analyze the tracks and rank the songs SIOL style. As always, they then compare the album and album cover and rank it against the previous studio albums reviewed. So tune in to find out if All Hell's Breakin' Loose after this album gets discussed and ranked and if the partnership of Frehley & Cusano have to file Chapter 11... Performance Anxiety - Robyn Hitchcock
EToday’s guest exemplifies perseverance; and not just with his music but with this podcast. There were a few technical issues which have, hopefully, been overcome with clever editing. Welcome the one and only Robyn Hitchcock. He’s written a memoir about his life in 1967. In fact, it’s called 1967, How I Got There And Why I Never Left. It’s a very unique take on a memoir that works so well. But before we hit on the book, Robyn helps me set things up by going over his life BEFORE 1967. He also talks about things that happened AFTER 1967, like forming The Soft Boys and why they broke up and then reunited at one of Matthew Seligman’s parties. Robyn talks about his solo career, why he went solo in the first place, and why he considers himself the reverse of an innovator. We also discuss some of the unique aspects of his solo work; like teaming up with Grant Lee Phillips, doing a film project with the late, great Jonathan Demme, and after decades of being a singer/songwriter, releasing an album that is entirely instrumental. Once we do get into the book, itself, there are even more amazing stories, like discovering Bob Dylan, learning a bit about guitar, and attending The Happening with Brian Eno. Did you know Eno was the app, developed in 1967? That’s a science fact. Another science fact is how good his memoir is. So go grab it from Akashic Books, Little Brown Books, or wherever you buy books these days. Follow Robyn @robynhitchcockofficial on Instagram & @robynhitchcock on X. Follow us @PerformanceAnx on both. Grab merch at performanceanx.threadless.com. Contribute to our coffee fund at ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. The Struts Life 09: From Pub to Stage - Gethin's Journey in Llanddewi Brefi
EIn this episode of The Struts Live, we're diving into the roots of our Welsh drummer, Gethin Davies. Picture this: a tiny village called Llanddewi Brefi, with a close-knit community of about 500 people, where Geth grew up in a bustling local pub run by his parents. This pub wasn't just any pub; it was the heart of the village, alive with music, laughter, and even the occasional visit from famous musicians. Geth shares some truly nostalgic memories from his childhood, painting a vivid picture of a life filled with colorful local legends and the rich history of his hometown, including the notable Synod of Brefi. But it's not just about the past—it's about the cultural essence of Wales that shaped Geth. He opens up about the significance of the Welsh language in his upbringing and the laid-back, community-centric vibe that comes with it. From amusing tales of local characters to the legendary 70s LSD bust that put the village on the map, Geth’s stories are as engaging as they are enlightening. This hometown tour series is just getting started, and you won't want to miss the rest as we uncover more about the places and experiences that have shaped The Struts. Stay tuned for next week’s episode where we continue our journey through the band members' hometowns. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
