Performance Anxiety - Jackie Popovec (The Vindys)
EToday’s guest reminds me that there is some amazing talent out there that needs to be heard. Welcome Jackie Popovec from Youngstown, Ohio’s own The Vindys. She’s a powerhouse vocalist whose voice is a Venn Diagram of some heavy hitters like Amy Winehouse, Christina Aguilera, & Carrie Underwood. And the rest of the band ain’t so bad either. They rock with an early Chicago sound. Think Terry Kath meets Eddie Van Halen with killer horns. They’ve been around for over ten years now, but Jackie has been singing for a bit longer than that. She and the band started off doing covers and sneaking in an original here and there. Now they’re doing their own stuff and throwing in covers you wouldn’t think of! But this whole conversation starts off with horror movies. And Spinal Tap. And how Jackie started writing songs. She was in her teens and her dad knew some people in some venues who would let a teenage Jackie play her own music. She was always drawn to belters but hearing jazz greats like Etta James, Sarah Vaughan, & Ella Fitzgerald really changed her approach. The band was poised to record a new album this summer when they were asked to join Pat Benetar on tour. So they made the obvious choice to put the album on hold and explore some new markets opening for a legend. And their live show is amazing! They’ve written a song for the Pittsburgh Pirates that was picked up by ESPN, they’ve played with a symphony orchestra, and are on a steady upward trajectory. Check out their music wherever you check out your music. See them on tour this summer with Pat Benetar. Follow them @TheVindys on social media. Check out their YouTube channel for great unreleased stuff. Check us out @PerformanceAnx on social media. Our merch is available at performanceanx.threadless.com. Only Three Lads: Jed I. Rosenberg & Brian Thalken - New Gary Young/Pavement Doc 'Louder Than You Think' & Top 5 Rock Docs &
EGrab your popcorn, Milk Duds, and RC Cola (that'll be $42.75, please), and join us in the back of theatre. We promise not to put the moves on you...we're here to watch the movie. Let's take it slow and see where this goes. Oh, sorry, got lost in the moment. This week, we discuss some of our favorite music documentaries, and celebrate one of the latest additions to the canon of great "rock docs"- Louder Than You Think: A Lo-Fi History of Gary Young & Pavement. Joining us for this discussion of Citizen Kane-esque proportions is Louder Than You Think's Director, Jed. I Rosenberg and Co-Producer Brian Thalken. Louder Than You Think, a 2023 SXSW Audience Award winner, is an up-close cinematic walkabout through the life of Gary Young (May 3, 1953 - August 17, 2023), the original (and highly unlikely) drummer of indie rock royalty Pavement. His booze and drugs-fueled antics (on-stage handstands, gifting vegetables to fans) and haphazard production methods (accidentally helping launch the lo-fi aesthetic) were both a driving force of the band's early rise and the cause of his eventual crash landing. Leaving a wake of joy and/or destruction at every turn, Gary teeters the thin line between free-form self-expression and chaotic self-destruction. With its inventive use of marionette sequences and featuring revelatory archival footage, Louder Than You Think is equal parts hilarious, heartbreaking and human. Learn more about your ad choices. Imbalanced History: Summer Vacay 2024: Public Enemy #1!
EOriginally released as episode #138 on 10/7/21, now tweaked and remastered for Summer Vacay 2024! "Coming together out of the fertile environment of Adelphi University and its college radio station, Public Enemy burst forth with a wall of power, a collective that changed Hip-Hop and helped forge an unholy alliance with Metal! Their song, "Fight The Power" played an actual role in Spike Lee's "Do The Right Thing," which put the group on the radar of a much wider audience. In this week's adventure, we explore the band's roots as a loosely associated group of artists who converge via WBAU, coalescing as The Bomb Squad, with unreal "solid work" being set off. It's a rambling, veering off-kilter look at PE, who have been part of both Imbalanced Brothers' musical life! Hats off to the samplers, the DJs scratchin' it out, the MCs sayin' it! Give it up for The Funky Drummer!!! Take time to learn stuff about stuff you already know stuff about! Listen to this cool episode, and then get caught up here!!! Performance Anxiety - Side Projects: Band Of Susans (w/Robert Poss & Karen Haglof)
EThe Side Projects series of this podcast gives me a lot of latitude regarding subject matter. Occasionally, I like to go down a rabbit hole on a specific band. But I think this is the first time I’ve been able to do that with band members, themselves. Please welcome Robert Poss and Karen Haglof of Band Of Susans. They’ve both been on the podcast. In fact they were very early episodes and we were past due for a catch up session. Both Robert and Karen have new albums out so it seemed like the perfect time to do a deep dive into Band Of Susans and talk about their new music, at the same time. We actually ended up doing it the other way around. Band Of Susans is one of the bands I can point to and say “They changed the music I listen to” without being hyperbolic. And it all stemmed from an album cover with my favorite car on it. Karen left the band after the Love Agenda album and went on to do a few minor things, like medical school, oncology, you know…not music stuff. Robert has kept his feet firmly in the business by doing all kinds of unique projects, including solo albums. As I mentioned, they both have new releases this year; Drones, Songs, & Fairy Dust by Robert and One Hand Up by Karen. Look them up wherever you get music. Both albums really touch on so many different styles of music. Get them both and you’ll definitely find something for you in there. Follow them both on social media; just look up their names, they’re easy to find. Look us up @PerformanceAnx on socials and grab our merch at performanceanx.threadless.com. Ugly American Werewolf in London: Harry Whitley of Asia (and John Mitchell)
Our long-time listeners know that The Wolf & Action Jackson have a special place in their hearts for the music of 80s pop/rock supergroup Asia. Asia's eponymous debut album was the top selling album in the US in 1982 and spent 9 weeks at the top of the chart thanks to hits like Sole Survivor, Only Time Will Tell and the #1 smash Heat Of The Moment. With John Wetton on bass & vocals, Steve Howe on guitar, Geoff Downes on keyboards and Carl Palmer on drums, Asia achieved great success and would go onto have many incarnations over the years. And though the original band did reunite for their 25th anniversary and release more albums, the death of John Wetton in 2017 left Asia in an uncertain place for the band and its fans. However, thanks to YouTube, Geoff Downes came across the talent of Harry Whitley - a Welsh multi-instrumentalist who put up some Asia performances from his home which really captured the spirit of John Wetton. From there, Geoff invited Harry to perform at the tribute to John Wetton at Trading Boundaries in the summer of 2023. The songs went down so well that Geoff eventually invited Harry to join Asia on a tour of the US in 2024. We tracked down Harry in New Jersey between gigs and talked to him about all of these amazing steps that led to him becoming the new lead singer of Asia, what it means to sing John's songs and how he's enjoying his first real trip to the US. We think you'll find Harry to be an open and down-to-earth young man who was candid in his answers. And as a bonus, guitarist John Mitchell also participated on the call as he was waiting for his room to be readied and he provided some fun comic relief. We cover as much as we could, including having Harry answer the question of a 10 year old Asia fan and if you stick around long enough, you might hear a bit of bonus material that had everyone laughing. The bottomline is if you have the chance to see this incarnation of Asia, don't miss it as we know any Asia fan will love it! Metal Mayhem ROC:Queensryche Author Brian Heaton-Roads To Madness: The Touring History Of Queensrcyhe 1981-1997”
We’re joined by Author Brian Heaton, to promote the new book “Roads To Madness: The Touring History Of Queensrcyhe 1981-1997”, a book that covers the Seattle Metal Band during their formative years through the peak of their commercial success with the original Band lineup. Brian shares why he decided to make a book as a natural follow-up to the website he ran for many years that archived the Band performances, setlists, the cities & venues they played at, the Bands they supported & the ones who opened for them. Additionally, he comments on including images of the great memorabilia that comes along with the concert experience: ticket stubs, concert photos, backstage passes, t-shirts, etc., how he obtained them & how the fans played a bit part in helping him piece together the book because of their contributions. Also, the Author provided great insights on the origins of the Band when they were called The Mob (1981) as a Cover Band, Geoff Tate joining, getting signed to a major label, opening for Quiet Riot, Dio, Twister Sister, Iron Maiden, Kiss, Ozzy, AC/DC, & Bon Jovi throughout the 80s, their rise to fame while on the road with Def Leppard & Metallica supporting “Operation Mindcrime) & becoming an MTV staple & arena headlining act while promoting “Empire”. I'm In Love With That Song: Small Faces - "Itchycoo Park"
Small Faces are one of the all-time great British bands from the 1960's but they never got the attention, success or respect they deserved. (Some of that was due to self-inflicted damage, but still...) Their biggest hit was "Itchycoo Park", 2:45 of psychedelic pop perfection. All 4 members of the band shine, and engineer Glyn Johns gets to introduce the world to the sound of flanging. Feel inclined to blow your mind? Check out this episode. Performance Anxiety - David Hakopyan (Antenna The End, The Apex Theory)
EToday’s guest makes me feel so excited and I just can’t hide it. It’s The Pointer Sisters. No. No it’s not. Please welcome David Hakopyan of Antenna The End. And I have to thank Jamie Park and Teen Cancer America for connecting us. David grew up in one of the biggest Armenian communities in the world outside of Armenia, itself. He was influenced equally by rock and Armenian folk music. But music wasn’t always his focus. For a while as a teen, he thought he might be an illustrator. He was the counterfeit Pushead guy in his school. And if that doesn’t make sense, it will after you listen. Or go look up Pushead. He got serious about music when he started playing in an Armenian, revolutionary, folk, alternative rock band with Serj Tankian called Forever Young. After cheating on that band with another, he started Soil with Serj and Daron Malakian. David discusses the one and only live show they played and its biggest pitfall. David and his bands, like Apex Theory & Mt. Helium, have always been hyper-focused on sounding original, to the point of making sure no one was listening to the big rock stations in LA. They’d do spot checks on each others’ radios. David’s new band is Antenna The End. And you can absolutely tell that it’s David’s band. He started writing after the kinds of personal issues that get a guy writing music. He also tells me when he came up with the band’s unique name. The debut EP will be out soon, but David gives us a sneak peak at the music and stories behind the band’s formation and the music he’s created. Check them out @antennatheend on Instagram & Facebook. Keep an eye out for the EP release in early August. And give him a call at…you know what, don’t do that. BUT, follow us @PerformanceAnx on Instagram & Twitter. Reach out, we don’t bite. Only Three Lads: Robyn Hitchcock - Top 5 Albums of 1967
The O3L Time Machine has gone berserk...it's landed all the way back in 1967! It's nice here, so we'll stay a while. The love is free, the clothes are groovy, the drugs are psychedelic (but just say no, kids), and the music is jaw-droppingly brilliant! The reason why we've blasted right past our normal era of focus, you ask? Well, it's not every day that we get to welcome living legend, singer, songwriter, guitarist, rock n' roll surrealist - and now author - Robyn Hitchcock to O3L. That particular year is the focus of Robyn's brand new memoir, 1967: How I Got There and Why I Never Left, out now on Little Brown Books (UK) and Akashic Books (US). 1967 explores how that pivotal slice of time tastes to a bright, obsessive-compulsive boy who is shipped off to a hothouse academic boarding school as he reaches the age of 13 - just as Bob Dylan's Highway 61 Revisited starts to bite, and the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper explodes. When he arrives in January 1966, Robyn Hitchcock is still a boy pining for the comforts of home and his family's loving au pair, Teresa. By December 1967, he's mutated into a 6'2" tall rabid Dylan fan, whose two ambitions are to get really high and fly to Nashville (spoiler alert: mission accomplished on both fronts!). In between - as the hippie revolution blossoms in the world outside - Hitchcock adjusts to the hierarchal, homoerotic world of Winchester, threading a path through teachers with arrested development, meatheads, groovers, and a sullen old maid - a very English freak show. On the way he befriends a cadre of bat-winged teenage prodigies and meets their local guru, the young Brian Eno. At the end of 1967, all the ingredients are in place that will make Robyn Hitchcock a songwriter for life. But then again, does 1967 really ever end? Robyn Hitchcock is a master of the absurd, creating "pictures you can listen to" that revel in the beauty of the unexpected. His first publicly visible band, the Soft Boys (1976-81), has remained an influential art-rock touchstone for generations of musicians. With a career spanning nearly five decades, his discography consists of more than 30 albums, including Underwater Moonlight (1980). I Often Dream of Trains (1984), Fegmania! (1985), Globe Of Frogs (1988), Queen Elvis (1989), Perspex Island (1991), Ole! Tarantula (2006), The Man Upstairs (2014), Robyn Hitchcock (2017) and Shufflemania (2022), and classic songs like "I Wanna Destroy You," "My Wife and My Dead Wife," "The Man with the Lightbulb Head," "Heaven," "Balloon Man," "Madonna of the Wasps," "So You Think You're In Love," and so many more. Special thanks to Robyn's wonderful wife Emma Swift, herself a brilliant singer/songwriter...and, it turns out, quite the IT tech; and Holly Watson from Holly Watson PR for the introduction and coordination. Ugly American Werewolf in London:Blind Faith - 1969
By 1969 Eric Clapton had finally gotten what he wanted - out of Cream. He felt the band (and the machine around it) was too big and couldn't deal with Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker constantly at each other's throats. And so he began to hang out and jam with his friend Steve Winwood who felt like he wanted a change from Traffic. As these two titans began to formulate some new material, the bosses at the record companies smelled money and quickly got them a record deal and a tour booked. Having already brought on Ginger Baker from Cream, they added bass player Ric Grech from Family and they made a late 60s psychelic/blues/jam album with a little something for everyone. Can't Find My Way Home and Presence Of The Lord showed the band's lighter acoustic side while Had To Cry Today and Do What You Like gave the band license to do the pyschedelic freak-out jams that allowed these great musicians to showcase their talents in the style of the day. The cover sparked some controversy which led to using a flyer on the US version and their first show was in front of more than half a million people in Hyde Park. But once again, Eric Clapton quickly moved away from the big machine so this is the only album Blind Faith ever offered up. Though Clapton and Winwood would go onto reunite in 2009 to give folks a glimpse of what they were, The Wolf & Action Jackson contemplate what they might have been had they stayed together as they take you track by track.
