Ugly American Werewolf in London: Steve Howe Interview
For our 200th episode we wanted to bring in a guest that rock fans would be excited about but someone The Wolf and Action Jackson really admire. After hosting amazing guests on our 50th (Ryan Condal, House of the Dragon), 100th (live review of Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets after interviewing Guy Pratt and Gary Kemp on ep 96), and 150th (Steve Kilbey of The Church) we needed someone special to commemorate this milestone. As luck would have it, legendary guitarist and member of the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame Steve Howe (Yes, Asia) is releasing his latest solo album, Guitarscape, on September 27 and made himself available to us. As we tried hard not to be complete fanboys, we asked Steve to walk us through how he started building the bones of the album in 2019 thanks to a new Novatron that he'd acquired. We speak with Steve about the different textures of the album from acoustics (Spring Rhyme) to his signature hollow body electrics (Distillations, Passing Thoughts) to his brand new pedal steel (Equinox, Steel Breeze). With his son Dylan on the drums, Steve has put together a colorful palette of textures using his many talents and toys. We also manage to work in some questions about touring with Yes in the US with Deep Purple; however, when we interviewed him the tour was yet to begin, at the time of the release of this episode the tour had concluded. It sounds like there will be more new Yes music and future tours which is wonderful to hear. And, of course, we managed to squeeze in an Asia question because as long time listeners will tell you, it all comes back to Asia. The bottomline is we think you'll love our chat with Steve Howe and encourage you to pick up Guitarscape September 27. And thanks to everyone who's supported us through the first 200 episodes - we have much more in store so stay tuned. Ep 120See Hear Podcast - Great Soundtracks Part 2
Movie music – any movie fan will acknowledge that a film score or a soundtrack can make or break how well a film works. The acting and cinematography and production values all count obviously, but imagine putting the 3 Stooges theme in place as “Mother” goes to see how Marion Crane is faring in the shower scene of Psycho. Welcome to episode 120 of See Hear. If you haven't caught up with the previous episode of the show, Tim, Kerry and myself were joined by our great friend Paul Ryan to talk about our favourite film scores, and they were widely diverse stylistically. That's what made the conversation so exciting. We had such a long conversation, I felt it best to split it up into two shows, so what you have downloaded / are about to download is part 2 of that chat. Like last time, we are rapt to also present segments spread throughout the show featuring hosts of some truly excellent podcasts in the Pantheon Network. These hosts enlighten us as to THEIR favourite soundtracks. You will hear from: Brett Vargo (Only Three Lads) Jesse Jackson (Set Lusting Bruce / Perfectly Good Podcast) Jason Whissell ( It's Not That Bad / There Can Only Be One) More film score recommendations than you can poke a pointed stick at. These conversations incorporate what makes the music work in context of the films they represent, and we go off on tangents to discuss similar scores or others by the same composers. Sounds interesting? We look forward to any feedback you may provide about the shows. Please, email us or post in the Facebook group with YOUR favourite soundtracks and scores. If you’ve been enjoying the show, please consider giving us a favourable review on iTunes and let your friends know that our show exists. If you don't enjoy the show, tell your adversaries to tune in. We don't care who listens..... See Hear is proudly part of the Pantheon Network of music podcasts. Shout It Out Loudcast: "Animalize Tour"
EThis week Tom & Zeus review the 1984-1985 Animalize tour which was in support of their 12th studio album, Animalize. This is SIOL's 9th KISS tour reviewed. This tour followed the Lick It Up tour, which was their first non-makeup tour. Animalize was released on September 17, 1984 and the tour began on September 30, 1984 in England. This was a time when the band members were constantly changing. New guitarist, Mark St. John, who just replaced Vinnie Vincent as the lead guitarist, was having health issues with hand and was replaced by Bruce Kulick. During the tour, Mark ended up playing on only three dates and was eventually replaced by Bruce Kulick permanently. The stage was basic for KISS with animal print. The costumes were similar to the Lick It Up costumes but with animal print and Gene's wig! The setlist featured 6 of the 9 songs from Animalize at one point on the tour. The albums, Creatures Of The Night, Lick It Up and Animalize were emphasized. This was a time when KISS ACTUALLY changed the setlist. At least 11 of the songs on the End Of The Road setlist were NOT played during this tour. As usual, the guys breakdown the costumes, stage, set list and overall tour. They then rank the costumes, stage, set list and overall tour against the previous 8 tours reviewed so far. So don't be like poor Mark St. John and sit in catering, instead tune in to another great tour episode! S5 Ep 2My Rock Moment: The Mamas & The Papas Historian and Author Richard Campbell
While The Mamas & The Papas were only together a few years, the iconic music that was made and the drama that ensued between this foursome in that short time is legendary. But what happened before John Phillips, Michelle Phillips, Cass Elliot, and Denny Doherty all came together? Each had their own unique journey before ultimately heading west and making California Dreamin’ a reality. My guest, author Richard Campbell, wrote a compelling book, ‘Gettin’ Kinda Itchie: The Groups That Made The Mamas and The Papas.’ It’s a prequel to this fabulous foursome's success as a group. As a close friend to the band and the “keeper of the flame,” as Michelle Phillips affectionately calls him, Richard brings us into John, Michelle, Denny, and Cass’ worlds with stories, photos, and rare album covers. In this episode, you’ll hear out-of-print songs from their previous bands - The Journeymen, The Mugwumps, and The Big 3 - songs that Richard has compiled on YouTube and Spotify. We’ll discuss their individual journeys as they strove to make a mark in the thriving East folk scene and how the four ultimately came together in the U.S. Virgin Islands and shortly after, found themselves in LA. So, let’s take a trip back to the early 60s when folk was thriving, Kennedy was alive and well and these 4 individuals were slogging it out on the East Coast in hopes of one day hitting it big. Songs in this episode (in order): “Creeque Alley” The Mamas & the Papas “Chase the Rising Sun” The Journeymen “The Banjo Song” - The Big 3 “Do You Know What I Mean” - The Mugwumps “Mr Tambourine Man” - The New Journeymen “California Dreamin’” - The Mamas & the Papas Links to Richard Campell’s channels: www.gettinkindaitchie.com YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@ThemusicofGettinKindaItc-tb7lu/playlists Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0gCs3dADXDMlSTinWFlLop?si=21406369c83e4bee&nd=1&dlsi=f6042ae5ddc94e78 Learn more about your ad choices. Prisoners of Rock and Roll -- Sharon Osbourne Almost Ruined Ozzy's First Two Albums
EOn this episode of Prisoners of Rock and Roll, we're heading into the dark, twisted world of Ozzy Osbourne and diving deep into two of the most legendary heavy metal albums of all time: Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman. Make no mistake: these albums kick ass. But, like anything involving the Prince of Darkness, there's more to the story than meets the eye. Sure, these records gave us unforgettable tracks like “Crazy Train” and “Over the Mountain,” but behind the scenes, things were a total circus. After recording Diary of a Madman, bassist Bob Daisley and drummer Lee Kerslake were kicked out of the band, setting off a firestorm of lawsuits for royalties. And just when you thought things couldn't get any wilder, Sharon Osbourne decided to go back years later and had their parts re-recorded by different musicians — all without really telling anyone. Talk about rewriting history! So crank up the volume, headbang like you mean it, and join us as we break down the music, the madness, and the mayhem behind Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman. This episode's going to be a wild ride through two albums that rocked the metal world and stirred up plenty of controversy along the way so put down that bat and open a beer. Let’s hit it! Ep 119See Hear Podcast Episode 119 - Great Soundtracks Part 1
As you know, our mission at See Hear HQ is to discuss, chew on, and pontificate (in that order) about music films. But.....what if we DIDN'T do that for a couple of episodes????? Shock horror!!! Welcome to episode 119 of See Hear Podcast. Don't panic....we're not straddling too far from our mission. This time around, instead of talking about films that are ABOUT music, we'll discuss the music itself from ANY film we jolly well please. Kerry, Tim and myself have invited previous guest and close friend, Paul Ryan to talk about our favourite movie scores and soundtracks. There are some who say that the best movie music is that which can be ignored while we focus on the film's action. We cry “balderdash”......great movie music can be noticed in its film context without distracting our attention from the film. To that end, the four of us picked 5 films each to discuss, chew on, and pontificate. The thing is, we spoke for such a long time, that rather than have you listen to a Ben Hur length episode (a terrific film score by Miklos Rosza, by the way), we're breaking our show up into two parts. The one you've (hopefully) downloaded is episode 119, and we'll put out episode 120 in a few days. We're privileged to have some additional film soundtrack nominations sent to us via some wonderful friends in the Pantheon network as well as a previous film director guest on the show who is something of a soundtrack expert. Marc Shea hosts the Performance Anxiety podcast. Markus Goldman is one half of the Imbalance History of Rock & Roll podcast. (Both shows are regularly in my earholes.....I recommend 'em) Amit Itzcar is the director of the Tel Aviv Soundtrack Festival.....so the subject matter is in his wheelhouse. When episode 120 is released in a few days, we'll continue our conversation, and three more wonderful guests, all from the Pantheon Network will weigh in on this most important subject. If you’ve been enjoying the show, please consider giving us a favourable review on iTunes and let your friends know that our show exists. If you don't enjoy the show, tell your adversaries to tune in. We don't care who listens..... See Hear is proudly part of the Pantheon Network of music podcasts. Performance Anxiety - Jeff Fielder (Mark Lanegan, Amy Ray)
EMy guest today is just fun to talk with. It’s Jeff Fielder. I first heard Jeff when researching for Mark Lanegan’s episode. He’s worked with so many people and made so much great music that it’s almost unbelievable. But he started off admiring rock before playing any. He grew up in Alaska with much older brothers. Long haired, Les Paul playing, Barracuda driving brothers. So Jeff got into music early. In fact, he started gigging before middle school in a 17 piece jazz band led by his future middle school music teacher and at one point, probably took one guitar lesson from the devil. His family moved to Seattle in the heyday of grunge. He played in a few bands that should have gone farther than they did. He started hanging out with Dave Abruzzesse and getting into session work. But after a while he put down music completely and became a craft bartender. But working with one artist brought him back. That’s when things started to snowball and they haven’t stopped. He’s played with Mark Lanegan, Amy Ray, Indigo Girls, Satchel, and Painted Shield. And despite his best efforts to the contrary, has made beautiful music with his wife, Tekla Waterfield. Most recently, he’s recorded a wild cover of Megadeth’s Peace Sells…But Who’s Buying with some amazing musicians, including mutual friend, Mike Squires for Couch Riffs. Keep an eye out for Jeff on the road with Duff McKagan and Indigo Girls. Follow him on Facebook and Instagram @jefffieldermusic. Follow us @PerformanceAnx on Instagram & X. Reach out and let us know who you want to hear from. Support us with coffee at ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety or merch at performanceanx.threadless.com. Performance Anxiety - Pamela McNeill
EToday’s guest makes me feel a little bit country AND a little bit rock and roll. Welcome singer/songwriter Pamela McNeill to the podcast. She has accomplished so much in her career. But it all started in Winona, MN. She talks to me about the music scene there and what event set her mind on being a musician. She talks about some unusual things about her like being a massive fan of Rush, working as a clown at the Ground Round restaurant and how that led to her first real musical job. Soon enough she was playing cover bands, which led to a gig with the legendary Lamont Cranston, where she got a real education in the music business. That led to a gig opening for the one and only Etta James! But a serious relationship led her to the UK where she entered the orbit of the man himself…Rick Astley, back in his first heyday. That led to a bit of karmic retribution for one particular member of Bananarama. And all the while, she’s writing her own music. She wrote Yanni’s first lyrical song, wrote for Wynonna Judd, wrote with Pam Tillis, and many others. And when she finally made her own albums, she blew it out of the water. She has been releasing music steadily since 1998 and has a new EP out called Wave After Wave on Farm To Label records. Think Fleetwood Mac playing country music and you start to get a feel for it. Check it out wherever you get music. Go buy it and follow her on socials @pamelamcneillmusic. Check out pamelamcneill.com for tour and music info. Follow us @PerformanceAnx on socials. Ugly American Werewolf in London: The Replacements - Let It Be
In 1984, The Replacements were gaining a reputation as fun live punk band, always delivering loud, raucous tunes with setlists full of covers and aggressive originals. They intentionally thwarted management's efforts to get them on bigger labels by sabotaging shows they knew record company reps would be attending. The Minneapolis quartet of Paul Westerberg on vocals, Bob Stinson on guitar, Tommy Stinson on bass and Chris Mars on drums carved out a loyal following and had begun to win over fans around the country thanks to opening for REM. But Westerberg's songwriting, especially his lyrics, were too strong to be for only those moshing around through a drunken haze. With Let It Be, the band explores more personal themes (Unsatisfied, Answering Machine, Androgynous) and captured more melody than they had previously. They still had plenty of straight ahead punk songs (We're Comin' Out, Tommy Got His Tonsils Out, Gary's Got A Boner) but also tried to empathize with those who might not understand the world around them and how to relate (Sixteen Blue). Westerberg's lyrics are personal and poignant and still resonate to this day. Plus, there's a KISS cover song on the album so what's not to like? We didn't find this record until later in life but if you're unfamiliar, I think you'll like a lot of what you hear as we delve into deep topics we don't always weigh in on thanks to this punk classic. Performance Anxiety - George Tolias (A Monkey Shine)
EToday’s guest has done so many things that I would like to do. And he tells us all about it. Welcome bassist and founding member of A Monkey Shine, George Tolias. George joins us from Athens…Greece, not Georgia. He got a late start in music. He didn’t start playing until his wife bought him a bass about 20 years ago! But he’s a quick study. Once he got comfortable, he started playing in a cover band. But they had an unusual set list. George describes what it’s like to play non-Greek rock music in Athens and how he wound up in New Orleans. After staying quite a bit longer than expected, he moved to France…to become a chef. But no matter where he goes, he’s joining bands. After moving back to Greece, George decided to get serious about his own band, A Monkey Shine. But then COVID hit so it essentially started as a solo project. But it has grown by leaps and bounds. George also gives up the origin of the band’s name, the difficulties of finding a singer who could sing well in English, and the secret origin of his bass. He also talks about the most special song on the album that he wrote for his mom, which also features Duke Garwood. A Monkey Shine’s debut is out and there’s a vinyl version, too! Check it out on Bandcamp. He’s also working on some tour dates in the near future. So follow him @amonkeyshine_official on Instagram or look for them on Facebook. Follow us @PerformanceAnx on socials. Our merch is at performanceanx.threadless.com. Slide us some coffee money at ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. Ugly American Werewolf in London: U2 - The Unforgettable Fire
EU2 were on a sharp trajectory up after 1983's War and the 1984 live album Under A Blood Red Sky. With sharp guitar licks from The Edge, powerful and earnest vocals from Bono and a killer rhythm section with Larry Mullens, Jr (drums) and Adam Clayton (bass), U2 were on their way to being the next great rock band. However, the boys yearned for something more than rock stardom and big American fame through disposable pop hits. They wanted a more European sound that was cultivated by the likes of Roxy Music and Ultravox. So much to the chagrin of Island Records founder Chris Blackwell, they employed Brian Eno (Roxy Music, David Bowie) and his engineer Daniel Lanois to help guide them on a mystical musical journey that would change their sound forever. And while they did score a big radio with with Pride (In The Name Of Love), most of the album is more ambient and often subdued. Deep cuts like Bad, A Sort of Homecoming and Indian Summer Sky may have caught the attention of fans and rock DJs, the album didn't become the game changer for which they may have been hoping. However, it set the groundwork for the next album, The Joshua Tree, which would propel them to superstar status around the globe. As it turns 40, we explore this left turn by U2 which would eventually pay enormous dividends.
