Imbalanced History: Alice's Restaurant Massacree!!!

The roasting of the bird! The sharing of the bounty! A tradition that goes back to the earliest days of America. The Imbalanced Boys get into that, but mainly they discuss the modern day addition of Arlo Guthrie's "Alice Restaurant" to the holiday musical fare! Earle Bailey of Sirius-XM stops by to offer historical perspective to the discussion. He shares a couple surprises! Other forms of the original song/album are discussed, it's role in the movement to stop the Vietnam War, as well as a film about the original story in 1969! However you celebrate, be thankful for what you have, and share what you can! We're thankful that you're here!!! ...Markus & Ray Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Rock and/or Roll: TAX SCAM RECORDS

In 2014 a certain record sold on ebay for $14,000. The lucky seller purchased the album at a Goodwill in New Hampshire for $1.00. As it turned out, very few copies existed because the majority of whatever had been pressed had most likely been shipped straight to a landfill by the label as a shady tax write off. And this wasn't a one-off scam. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ugly American Werewolf in London: The Greatest Night In Pop Documentary

Just before Christmas 1984, Harry Belafonte wanted US artists (and especially black artists) to create a charity album to benefit starving people in Africa as the Do They Know It's Christmas single by the days most popular UK bands was a huge success. He teamed up with manager to the stars Ken Kragen to put together the team that would write and record the lead single. Immediately, Ken enlisted his client, Lionel Richie, to write the song. Lionel and Ken knew they'd need all-star producer Quincy Jones to put it all together. Quincy thought it would be a good idea to get the biggest pop star in the world, Michael Jackson, involved and things snowballed from there as Ken brought on legends like Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Willie Nelson, Diana Ross, Kenny Rogers, Dionne Warwick, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles and artists that were popular at the time like Billy Joel, Kim Carnes, Cindy Lauper, Huey Lewis and more. But how would they get all that talent in one room at one time? Ken devised the idea that so many would be in LA for the American Music Awards on January 28, 1985 so that would be the ideal time. But that was 5 weeks away!!! So Ken went about finding the venue and Lionel and Michael worked on the song. It was all kept very hush hush and even the artists didn't know where they were going after the AMAs until they were on the way. And to make the night even more stressful for Lionel, he was hosting the AMAs and was performing twice (not to mention collecting 6 awards that night). The documentary was a fascinating glimpse into one special night where all egos were put aside in order to record a special song for a worthy cause. If you haven't seen it on Netflix, check out The Greatest Night In Pop - it's a fascinating story! Rock is Lit: It Ain’t Only Rock ‘n’ Roll: Sarah Tomlinson Talks the Rolling Stones, Anita Pallenberg, and Reads From Her Novel, ‘The Last Days of the Midnight Ramblers’

In this installment of the Rock is Lit Season 4 Reading Series, Sarah Tomlinson discusses the inspiration for and reads from her debut novel, ‘The Last Days of the Midnight Ramblers’. ‘The Last Days of the Midnight Ramblers’ synopsis: Anke Berben is ready to tell all. A legendary model and style icon, she reveled in headline-grabbing romances with not one but three members of the hugely influential rock band the Midnight Ramblers. The band members were as famous for their backstage drama as for their music, and Anke is the only one who fully understands the tangled relationships, betrayals, and suspicions that have added to the Ramblers’ enduring appeal and mystique. That is most evident in the mystery around Anke’s role in the death of Mal, the band’s founder and Anke’s husband, in 1969. When Mari Hawthorn accepts the job to work with Anke on her memoir, she is dead set on getting to the truth of Mal’s death. She has always been deft at navigating the fatal charms of celebrities, having grown up with a narcissistic, alcoholic father. As she ingratiates herself into the world of the band, she grows enchanted, against her better judgment, by these legendary rock stars. She knows she can’t get pulled in too deep, otherwise she’ll compromise her objectivity—and her integrity. Filled with all of the glamour and attitude of rock and roll, ‘The Last Days of the Midnight Ramblers’ is a bighearted page-turner that will appeal to fans of ‘Daisy Jones & The Six’ and ‘Almost Famous’. Sarah Tomlinson, a former music journalist, has been a ghostwriter since 2008, penning more than 20 books, including five ’New York Times’ bestsellers. In 2015, she published the father-daughter memoir, ’Good Girl’ (Gallery Books). She wrote ’The Last Days of the Midnight Ramblers’, her first novel, in-between assignments for a who’s who of celebrity clients. Ep 180Love That Album - The Beach Boys "Sunflower" and "Surf's Up"

Time to get your surfboards waxed, get into your togs, and head to the beach.....if you're in the Southern Hemisphere. While you're splashing in the southern waves, you might want to soundtrack your time with music from the band most identified with Northern Hemisphere beaches....except we're not discussing any beach songs. Huh? Welcome to episode 180 of Love That Album. It had been a while since I had my beloved team of Shane Pacey and Kerry Fristoe on the show, so I invited them to join and gave Kerry the pick of album to discuss. She selected the 1971 Beach Boys release, Surf's Up. I added their 1970 album – the debut album on the Brother Records label – Sunflower to the mix. I felt that the albums are tied together in some ways (and given the recent box set of these sessions, Feel Flows, so do the Beach Boys). They're also quite different in many ways. We're here to contrast these albums from each other, and what came before it. But wait.....we have another wonderful guest. Joining the show for a second time is Lisa Torem. She's about to publish a book in early 2025 called “Beach Boys 1965-1979: (On Track)”. She knows her BB, that's for sure. The conversation goes to interesting places as we discuss the group's relation to ecology, politics, 1950s wistfulness, lust, harmonies (not fraternal....the other kind), musical sincerity, and much more. We look into the merits of each BB as songwriter, and why it seemed their popularity declined in the US before rising slightly with the release of these albums. Shane and I crack bad puns....I get taken over the coals for reading too deeply into something (isn't that what this show is about????) In other words.....it's a typical LTA. There's a specialist podcast about the Beach Boys I recommend called “Sail On”...so check them out (AFTER you listen to us, of course). Check out Lisa's website at https://www.lisatorem.com/ to see what she's up to, and how to get a hold of her books. We discussed Suzanne Vega last year, but she's written about other musicians as well. Turns out Lisa herself is a musician / songwriter as is her daughter Madi Torem. Madi has just released a single called Look Both Ways Before You Cross My Heart written by Lisa. Give a watch of the music video...great song...Madi has a touch of Stevie Nicks to my ears. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Wk2KjbTkso You can look around Shane's work at either https://shanepaceytrio.com.au/ or at https://bondicigars.com/ There's a terrific live gig with the Trio at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q1iDpLOMQTw You can read Kerry's terrific film essays at https://prowlerneedsajump.wordpress.com/ and tune into her every month on See Hear podcast. Download this episode of LTA from your podcast app of choice (not Spotify) or you can download from the website at https://lovethatalbumpodcast.blogspot.com/2024/11/love-that-album-episode-180-beach-boys.html Love That Album is proudly part of the Pantheon Podcast network. Only Three Lads: Milo Binder - Top 5 '90s Singer Songwriter Albums

E

When you hear the term "singer-songwriter", what the first thing that comes to mind? Sensitive '70s long-haired hippies strolling through Laurel Canyon with an acoustic guitar? Us too. But, amidst the explosion of alternative rock, grunge, Britpop, electronic music, and hip-hop, the '90s were a fruitful decade for the singer-songwriter. This crop of artists drew from a stylistically varied palette, but played music with passion, heart, honesty, vulnerability, and a knack for poetic storytelling. One of the most promising singer-songwriters of the '90s was this week's Third Lad Milo Binder, the musical alter ego of Todd Lawrence. Milo Binder's self-titled debut album was released in 1991 to universal critical acclaim, featuring a respected roster of legendary musicians including Garth Hudson from The Band, Sneaky Pete from Flying Burrito Brothers, and Victoria Williams, as well as studio pros like the late David Vaught (Rosebud, Tom Waits, Roger McGuinn) and Duane Jarvis. Milo was profiled on NPR, received folk radio airplay, and shared the stage with a range of artists from the Indigo Girls to Soundgarden. Naturally, with that auspicious debut, Milo Binder went on to a long, fruitful musical career. Right? Well, a series of life changing events caused Milo Binder to hang up the guitar and transform back into mild-mannered Todd Lawrence for the better part of 33 years (the Superman analogy isn't all that hyperbolic...you'll find out that Todd is pretty much a super hero!). Other than the occasional live appearance and 2019's wonderfully whimsical psychedelic pop fable Paisley and the Firefly written and recorded with his longtime musical partner and best friend Willie Aron, a true follow up to the Milo Binder album never materialized. Until now. August 2024 heralded the return of Milo Binder with his (verrrrrry) long awaited second album, The Unspeakable Milo Binder, on Heyday Again (distributed by Real Gone Music). It finds our hero not only in fine form, but it's a record that equals or surpasses its predecessor. Listen to Milo's remarkable story, plus: What '90s singer-songwriter was a triple crossover...but with three different albums? Where did Uncle Gregg bomb doing stand up? Who was Milo's toughest audience? What group of people did Cher offend? (According to our official staff fact checker, aka Brett's wife, it's NOT who we said it was.) Rock is Lit: When Pop Music Meets the Occult: O.F. Cieri Discusses and Reads From Her Novel ‘Backmask’

In this installment of the Rock is Lit Season 4 Reading Series, O.F. Cieri reads an excerpt from her novel ‘Backmask’ and discusses the inspiration behind the story and the music that shaped it. Inspired by pop music history and written in the style of ‘60s horror pulp, ‘Backmask’ is the fake history of a conspiracy theory surrounding the Satanic agenda to control children’s minds. Nicholas Hush, 1960s record producer, has a vision for the future of pop music. After a series of prophetic dreams, he wants to combine occult imagery with upcoming trends to create a new, groundbreaking look. His secretary, Valerie Chill, is tasked with finding consultants and funding while he crafts the perfect album. Quickly their project becomes entangled in other, larger machinations, and two teenage pop acts become responsible for international intrigue, brainwashing, and an occult massacre. Taking inspiration from the lives of Joe Meek, Phil Spector, and Timothy Leary, ‘Backmask’ is a speculative look at how hidden messages got into pop music. O.F. Cieri is a self-taught writer based out of NYC. She has been published in ‘Ligeia Magazine’ and ‘Misery Tourism’. In 2013 she won first place in BMCC's Poetry Competition. In 2016 she won an Honorable Mention in LaborArts Make Work Visible Competition. Her nonfiction has been carried by ‘Hyperallergic’ and the ‘Invisible Oranges’. In February of 2023 she published her second book, ‘Lockdown Laureate’, with Castaigne Publishing. Her third book, ‘Backmask’, was published by Malarkey in June of 2023. I'm In Love With That Song: Legends of Blues Guitar

No genre had greater impact of the development of Rock & Roll than the Blues. And no instrument has contributed more to Rock than the electric guitar. Prisoners of Rock and Roll -- Selling the Drama: How Live Crash and Burned

Live was one of the most popular bands of the post grunge era. After entering the alternative music scene in 1991 with a spiritual album called Mental Jewelry, they became one of the biggest bands of the mid 90s on the backs of Throwing Copper and Secret Samahdi. They had made it! Four friends from high school who became wealthy rock stars who sold millions of albums and landed on the cover of Rolling Stone. And then they crashed and burned in one of the biggest dumpster fires I have ever read about. Their relevancy faded quickly as the music industry changed. After breaking up in 2009, three members of the band invested in a series of businesses that turned out to be ponzi schemes. They lost $10 million, their instruments, and even the painting that appears on the cover of Throwing Copper. The four original members of the band have sued each other so many times that it is hard to keep track of. How did this band of four guys from the working class town of York Pennsylvania have such a meteoric crash and burn? Tune into this episode of Prisoners of Rock and Roll to find out. Episode Playlist & Other Stuff Check out our episode playlist here. If you want to hear Live's early Public Affection tape, it's on YouTube. You also have to go on YouTube to hear Live's only album with Chris Shinn. Rolling Stone published a great article on the lawsuits and bad business deals that helped ruin Live. Prisoners of Rock and Roll -- Pearl Jam's Influence on Rock and Roll

We’re shining a spotlight on one of the last bands standing from the grunge era: Pearl Jam. While so many of their Seattle peers have either burned out or faded away, Pearl Jam’s still out there, rocking stadiums, dropping albums, and staying true to their roots in a world where rock and roll isn’t exactly topping the charts anymore. We’re going to dig into how Pearl Jam has managed to outlast so many others, their influence on rock and roll, and how they evolved from flannel-wearing grunge pioneers to a band with a legacy that spans over 30 years. Plus, we’ll talk about their legendary battle with Ticketmaster, when they took a stand against corporate greed and the exploitation of fans — a legal fight that still resonates today, especially in a time of sky-high ticket prices. So throw on your best worn-out band tee, turn up the volume, and join us as we dive into the story of Pearl Jam, a band that’s weathered the storms of the music industry and is still rocking like no other. E

We're back this week to RATT-n-Roll as we journey through the discography and pick The Best & Worst of RATT! Emerging from the streets of Los Angeles, the RATT story goes all the way back to the 70's. Eventually, the lineup would solidify with singer Stephen Pearcy, guitarists Warren DeMartini and Robbin Crosby, bassist Juan Croucier, and drummer Bobby Blotzer. The twin guitar attack of DeMartini and Crosby combined with the solid rhythm section of Croucier and Blotzer was capped off with the unique vocals of Pearcy; making RATT one of the premier bands of the burgeoning Sunset Strip scene. From there, the band would release a debut EP and seven albums that would achieve over 20 million in sales. Setbacks, addictions, and even death would become a part of their story and we're covering it all. In this episode we discuss our thoughts on RATT and their discography. We'll pick our Best & Worst track from 'RATT.' 'Out of the Cellar,' 'Invasion of Your Privacy,' 'Dancing Undercover,' 'Reach for the Sky,' 'Detonator,' 'RATT 99.' and 'Infestation.' Ugly American Werewolf in London: Autumn Whitaker on the We Are One Inauguration Concert 2009

No matter which candidates you may have voted for, we at The Wolf are just glad it's all over. The nasty ads and ridiculous yard signs are no way to spend your fall. Win or lose, it's time to get back to what's important - Keeping Rock Alive!! On that note, we do have an election related story from our friend Autumn Whitaker who taught us about Gentle Giant's Octopus on episode 101. It turns out she was in Washington DC for inauguration week in January 2009 and on January 18th the We Are One Concert was put on at the Lincoln Memorial. Over 400,000 people showed up to see speeches from accomplished actors, activists and politicians. But more importantly, some of the biggest rock stars on the planet came to celebrate including Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi, U2, James Taylor, John Legend, Beyonce, Shakira, Cheryl Crow, Stevie Wonder and more. Autumn gives us the lowdown on what was happening in the green room as the performers took turns coming and going from the stage. And though she didn't perform to the crowd, she did pick up a guitar and strum out Led Zeppelin's All Of My Love in the green room. As she focused on her playing, she noticed a man's shoes directly in front of her. Steadfast in her playing, she responded "No, I'm OK" to whoever it was that offered her a pick. After she heard chuckles, she looked up to realize it was her idol - Bruce Springsteen!! With Autumn's endearing charm she talks about meeting The Boss, blowing off Jon Bon Jovi, messing with Bono and asking James Taylor what was wrong with his eye. Whether you're on the right or the left, you'll enjoy this tale of an inauguration concert like no other! Shout It Out Loudcast: "Destroyer"

E

This week Tom & Zeus celebrate their 300th episode with their review of the 1976 legendary album from KISS, "Destroyer!" This was KISS' 4th studio album and the 24th and LAST KISS studio album reviewed by SIOL. KISS was riding high after their live album "Alive" broke through and went gold. The power and energy of a live KISS show was the missing ingredient to get KISS their big break. Not wanting to rest on their recent success, the band brought producer Bob Ezrin from Alice Cooper fame in to help them "get to the next level." Ezrin was like no producer KISS ever had before or since. Bringing the best out of the members and co-writing 7 of the 9 tracks, Ezrin's fingerprints were all over Destroyer. Destroyer was very different then the previous raw three albums. This album had choirs, ghost players, a ballad, orchestras and even a calliope. The final result was KISS most commercial, critically acclaimed and perhaps polarizing album. The album features some of KISS most legendary songs, including, Detroit Rock City, God Of Thunder, Shout It Out Loud, Beth and more. As usual the guys breakdown and analyze the tracks and rank the songs SIOL style. As always, they then compare the album and album cover and rank it against the previous studio albums reviewed. There is no better way to celebrate Shout It Out Loudcast's 300th episode than with an album review of perhaps KISS' best album. Oh and don't miss the cameo congratulations from the band members (cough) on SIOL's 300th Episode! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Rock is Lit: Murder, Music, and Mystery in LA: Philip Cohen Reads from His Novel ‘Conflict in the City’

In this episode, Philip Cohen joins the Rock is Lit Season 4 Reading Series to share a few chapters of his novel ‘Conflict in the City’. Mixing and blending the genres of detective noir and music, ‘Conflict in the City’ takes place in greater Los Angeles, home to both classic and modern fictional LA detectives like Raymond Chandler’s Phillip Marlowe and Michael Connolly’s Harry Bosch, and music legends like the Doors, Van Halen, and The Mamas and The Papas. It’s in this world that we find Johnny “Whoops” Watson and Billy Bates, young guitarists/singers and their band, Conflict, playing clubs in modern LA, where the days of rock’s zenith and ascendance in the 1960s and 1970s has faded, but the hopes and dreams of aspiring musicians haven’t. Conflict is struggling and chaos ensues when someone linked closely to the band is killed. Billy and Johnny become swept up in the mystery, ill-prepared as they are to confront it. Philip M. Cohen was born in New York City and moved to Los Angeles as a young man. A musician since his pre-teens, he began writing songs and playing with bands in his teens and had a near-encounter with fame with his band The Heaters. He then became a music attorney to pay the bills, but continued to write, perform, and record music. Presently, Phil still consults on legal and business matters but spends most of his time writing and playing music, composing, recording, and performing with his two bands, Dogs and Bones and The Silver Heaters, consisting of former members of The Heaters. ‘Conflict in the City’ is his first published novel and ‘Conflict in the Club’, the second. They are both part of an on-going series dubbed “The Conflict Stories.” MUSIC IN THE EPISODE IN ORDER OF APPEARANCE: Rock is Lit theme music [Guitar Instrumental Beat] Sad Rock [Free Use Music] Punch Deck—“I Can’t Stop” The Doors “Light My Fire” The Mamas and The Papas “California Dreamin’ ” The Doors “Riders On the Storm” [Guitar Instrumental Beat] Sad Rock [Free Use Music] Punch Deck—“I Can’t Stop” Rock is Lit theme music LINKS: Leave a rating and comment for Rock is Lit on Goodpods: https://goodpods.com/podcasts/rock-is-lit-212451 Leave a rating and comment for Rock is Lit on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/rock-is-lit/id1642987350 Philip Cohen on Facebook: @PhilCohen Christy Alexander Hallberg’s website: https://www.christyalexanderhallberg.com/rockislit Christy Alexander Hallberg on Instagram, Twitter, YouTube: @ChristyHallberg Rock is Lit on Instagram: @rockislitpodcast Learn more about your ad choices. Shout It Out Loudcast: Album Review Crew "Apple"

E

On the 58th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & special guest, Brad Rusthoven from the Slamfest Podcast, review the 1990 debut album from Mother Love Bone, "Apple." Mother Love Bone has legendary status amongst grunge fans. The band was formed in Seattle from another legendary early grunge band, Green River. The band was led by charismatic frontman and main songwriter, Andrew Wood. Guitarist Stone Gossard of Green River and latter Pearl Jam on rhythm and lead guitar and Bruce Fairweather on lead and rhythm guitar as well. Jeff Ament previously of Green River and later of Pearl Jam fame on bass and Greg Gilmore on drums. The album was a mixture of alt rock, glam metal and future grunge. Hard hitting lyrics which also showed a lighter and more fun side of the "Seattle Sound." Mother Love Bone was one of the earliest Seattle bands to be destined for greatness with their debut album coming on a major label. However, Andrew Wood's death from heroin overdose on March 19, 1990 was tragic end of this upcoming band. The album was released a few months later on July 19, 1990. A tribute album/band, Temple Of The Dog further created the legend of Mother Love Bone as did the breakout of Pearl Jam shortly thereafter. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. This was Tom's pick. Imbalanced History: The FBI vs. Jim Morrison - 55 Years Later!

E

Originally released as Episode #134 on 9/6/2021, The FBI vs. Jim Morrison is one of the best episodes of the podcast from the early days! The guys were researching for a Doors episode when Markus unearthed Jim's FBI file! The episode is being re-released today on 11/11/2024, 55 years after the day of that insane Continental flight from L.A. to Phoenix! The FBI's extensive file on Jim and The Doors is dissected, showing Markus & Ray's love of this event, and its role, in Rock & Roll history. Also included? Ray's whacky "Jim Morrison Felony Arrest Poetry Jam!!!" It's rare when balance is brought to the Imbalanced History, but discovering this anniversary (okay, we stumbled onto it..) was inspiring! Hope you enjoy the re-release of this fun episode, and get ready for another new episode next week! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
