Only Three Lads: Top 5 Ramones Songs (with Carl & Dana from 'This Is Rock 'n' Roll Radio')

E

Hey ho, let's go! This week, we're all about one of the most influential, important, and let's not forget, fun , bands of the era - Ramones. Joining us for our discussion is Dana Bonn and Carl Cafarelli from This Is Rock ‘n’ Roll Radio, airing Sunday nights from 9:00 pm - midnight ET on Syracuse’s SPARK! WSPJ 103.3 and 93.7 FM, featuring the "best three hours of radio on the whole friggin' planet". Carl is also an incredibly gifted music scribe, writing the must-read daily music blog Boppin' (Like The Hip Folks Do) and in many fine publications. Relevant to today's topic, He has also published Gabba Gabba Hey! A Conversation with the Ramones, culled from his interviews with the band. His latest book, The Greatest Record Ever Made (Volume 1), features insightful, passionate, humorous essays on 145 of his favorite songs across all genres. The Ramones were an American punk rock band formed in New York City in 1974. Known for helping establish the punk movement in the United States and elsewhere, the Ramones are often cited as the first true punk rock band. The Ramones ranked number 26 in Rolling Stone magazine's 2004 list of the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time and number 17 in VH1's 2012 television series 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock. In 2002, the Ramones were ranked the second-greatest band of all time by Spin, trailing only the Beatles. On March 18, 2002, the original four members and Tommy's replacement on drums, Marky Ramone, were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in their first year of eligibility. In 2011, the group was awarded a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. (Thanks, Wikipedia.) Rock is Lit: The Stalker and the Rocker: Kat Hausler Reads From Her Novel ‘What I Know About July’

In this installment of the Rock is Lit Season 4 Reading Series, Kat Hausler reads an excerpt from her novel ‘What I Know About July’ and discusses its creation. The novel centers around indie rocker Simon Kemper, fresh out of rehab and riding the wave of moderate success with his band in Berlin. But lurking in the background is his stalker, a mysterious figure present at every show, sending unsettling postcards to his label and acting as though she owns him. When she suddenly vanishes during one of his performances, Simon becomes the prime suspect. What begins as an attempt to clear his name spirals into a deeper psychological journey, as Simon questions whether her obsession could have truly ended—or if it has merely become entangled in the lives of those closest to him: his bandmates, a new romantic interest, an embittered ex, and the person he thought he had left behind. Narcissistic and insecure, Simon's struggle to become a better person is central to this haunting story. Originally from Virginia, Kat Hausler is a graduate of New York University and holds an M.F.A. in Fiction from Fairleigh Dickinson University, where she was the recipient of a Baumeister Fellowship. She is the author of ‘Retrograde’ and ‘What I Know About July’, as well as many shorter pieces. Her work has appeared in ‘Hawaii Pacific Review’, ‘34th Parallel’, ‘Inkspill Magazine’, ‘The Sunlight Press’, ‘The Dalloway’, ‘Rozlyn Press’, ‘Porridge Magazine’, ‘LitReactor’, ‘BlazeVOX’, ‘failbetter’, and’ The Airgonaut’, among others. She lives in Berlin and is also a translator. Imbalanced History: "The Magic Of It All" With David Cousins Of The Strawbs! REDUX!

E

This is a re-release of our original episode #311 on 9/4/23: Connecting with David Cousins of The Strawbs for this episode was a different experience for both of the Imbalanced Brothers. Ray was a fan of the band from the 1970s, when Markus was still a younger kid! So they each approached this interview, and the new album, differently. The result is a very exciting take on a classic band making their way back up the UK charts with The Magic Of It All, how they got there, as well as how South Africa now, and then, became central to the project. Dave shares some incredible stuff for guitar and banjo players regarding tunings, tells tales of Sandy Denny and Rick Wakeman, and capped the visit by revealing that a collaboration with members of Wu-Tang Clan is in motion. Ugly American Werewolf in London: King Crimson - In The Court Of The Crimson King

We've developed our On First Listen series to give us a chance to explore albums that we didn't know but had heard about for years. Maybe a friend recommended it, perhaps it was popular at a time in our lives when it slipped past us or maybe we'd seen in on all-time lists. King Crimson's debut fit into the third category as many progressive rock fans hold In The Court Of The Crimson King in very high regard. And with many talented line-ups over the years including Greg Lake on bass & vocals, Ian McDonald on keys and many other things, and Robert Fripp on guitar on this album (with future versions featuring John Wetton, Boz Burrell, Bill Bruford, Tony Levin, Adrian Belew, Mel Collins and many, many more) we figured we'd give it a go. However, while the musicianship is off the charts and they experiment with many keys, times and toys (the new mellotron was driving much of their experimental sound), sometimes it's not terribly listenable. 21st Century Schitzoid Man is abrupt and in your face as a protest to the Vietnam War but isn't a toe tapper. The wistful I Listen To The Wind is 180 degree turn as a lovely ballad but is more than 6 minutes long. And Epitaph, Moonchild (nothing like the Iron Maiden song) and The Court Of The Crimson King though they have moments of beauty and style fail to land in the fun zone. While many will appreciate the music for it's complexity and degree of difficulty, it's not an album you put on in the background of a party. Perhaps our blues based rock brains aren't mature enough to understand but we find 70s era Yes and Genesis far easier to digest and enjoy. Note: We recorded this a year before releasing it as we planned for it to be our first On First Listen but scheduling necessities caused us to leave it on the shelf. We mention that it's 54th anniversary is coming up but as we release this it's the 55th anniversary of original release. And it was before we interviewed director Toby Amies about his fabulous documentary King Crimson: In The Court Of The Crimson King for episode 158. Rock is Lit: A Blast From the ‘80s: Brieanna Wilkoff Talks Bon Jovi and Reads From Her Novel ‘I’ll Be There For You’

EPISODE SUMMARY: In this installment of the Rock is Lit Season 4 Reading Series, Brieanna Wilkoff shares how ‘80s music, especially Bon Jovi, influenced her novel, ‘I’ll Be There For You’ and reads an excerpt. ‘I’ll Be There For You’ follows high school student Rae Ballester, who loves movie musicals and—thanks to her dad—’80s rock. Since he died a year ago, his favorite music helps keep his memory alive. Struggling to move on, Rae keeps her head down and earbuds in, but shunning the world has cost her even her closest friendships, leaving her the “Owner of a Lonely Heart.” When Rae meets Mac, a boy with a charming smile who thinks any problem can be solved with a show tune, she cautiously welcomes their easy banter. With his humor, enthusiasm, and well-curated Broadway playlists, Mac slowly edges his way into her heart, but when he proves “Every Rose Has Its Thorn,” Rae thinks about withdrawing to the comfort of hair metal and the silver screen. Should Rae retreat from the world to protect her already broken heart, or will her involvement in the school’s theater program and the random acts of kindness she and others have started performing give her “Something to Believe In?” ‘I’ll Be There for You’ delves into the personal journey of healing old wounds, making new friends, and how to build a future with pieces of the past and present. Brieanna Wilkoff believes wholeheartedly in the power of kindness, the importance of theatre, and the awesomeness of '80s rock. She married her husband onstage at the oldest surviving theatre in central Ohio, and their first dance was to Bon Jovi's "Thank You for Loving Me." ‘I'll Be There for You’ is Brieanna's debut young adult novel. It was inspired by her family's commitment to kindness, including performing 100 kind acts in a single day. Brieanna lives in Westerville, Ohio, with her husband, daughter, and dog. Ep 415What Difference Does It Make: Steve Diggle finds harmony with The Buzzcocks

We celebrate Punk For A Day Day on October 25 by recognizing one of our favorite Punks. One wouldn't blame Steve Diggle if he decided to pack up The Buzzcocks name after the death of vocalist Pete Shelley back in 2018. But Steve is carrying on, with the same fervor that powered the band back in Manchester, England in 1978. When we talked back in 2022, The Buzzcock's latest album, Sonics In The Soul had just been released. Steve now has a memoir coming out on October 29 entitled Autonomy: Portrait of A Buzzcock. Join Patreon Get some merch Donate to the fundraiser ~~~~ FEATURED SONG The Drop – “Rocket Trip, Man” (from LONG HELD GRUDGES and the soundtrack to the motion picture, DEALeR) In Part 7.1 of my albums by decade series, I tackle the first half of the 2010s. Physical sales had already started dropping in the 2000s. By the mid 2010s, all physical formats were well under half the market share of digital and streaming, and it was only the beginning. We might forget, though, that until later in the decade, physical sales were still a force. Despite the 2000s being seen as the turning point from physical to digital, it’s really the 2010s where the changeover happened. As it did, the definition of what an album is started to change as well, with packaging and sequence becoming far less important than singles and whatever would get music to sell online. What were your favorite albums of the first half of the 2010s? Do you think albums still had cultural influence? Discuss dammit! Shout It Out Loudcast: Album Review Crew "W.A.S.P Debut Album"

E

On the 57th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & special guest, lead guitarist and songwriter from the band Restrayned, Tony Musallam review the 1984 self titled debut album from W.A.S.P.. W.A.S.P's debut album came two years after the band was formed. The Los Angeles based band was founded by lead singer, songwriter and bassist, Blackie Lawless. Blackie was a veteran of L.A. scene. Chris Holmes, who later became famous for his appearance in "Decline Of The Western Civilization II: The Metal Years", was the lead guitarist and rhythm guitarist along with Randy Piper. The drummer was Tony Richards. W.A.S.P. had become a target of the Parents Music Resource Center "PMRC" and their lead single "Animal (Fuck Like A Beast)" was taken off their debut album by their label for fear of backlash. The album featured hard rock, metal and shock rock as well. Blackie's trademark vocals and shock themes separated W.A.S.P. from a lot of the other L.A. bands. The band had a couple of videos as well to promote their shock rock image. The album made it to Number 74 on the US Billboard charts and went gold. The album was produced by Blackie Lawless and Mike Varney. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. This was Shout It Out Loudcast's Patreon pick. So tune in to see if the SIOL Patreon members were B.A.D. in selecting this album and if they made SIOL sad or if the torture will ever stop. Only Three Lads: Top 5 Underrated Male Singers

E

Which male singers do you feel deserve more love and respect? That, dear friends, is the question we ponder this week with someone who knows - veteran circuit singer Dave Dawson. Dave's new book, Pop Idle: 30 Years on the Road as a Professional Singer, is an honest, humourous, insightful look at life on the bottom rung of the showbiz ladder. Like hordes of others, best-selling author Dave Dawson has spent decades crisscrossing the UK as a solo full-time professional musician. During his 30 years on the road, he has performed thousands of shows before tens of thousands of people, yet still remains one of the army of anonymous entertainers who literally sing for their supper, as part of the Never Ending UK Tour. From pubs to clubs, dives to luxury hotels, theatres to gardens, and hen nights to care homes, there’s hardly a live environment that he hasn’t encountered, enjoyed or endured. Along the way, he’s had brushes with fame and fandom, strippers and stalkers, crooks and colourful characters, pissed-up punters and prima donnas… and has banked a wealth of experience at the brunt of the live music circuit. You may also know Dave Dawson as Dave Philpott, who appeared with us last season to discuss his bestselling book series of bonkers letters to pop stars with real replies - Dear Mr. Kershaw, Dear Mr. Pop Star, Grammar Free in the UK, and Dear Catherine Wheel. Oh, and despite the tendency to poke a little fun at Hanson's ubiquitous 1997 earworm 'Mmm Bop', Taylor Hanson probably is underrated. Listen to the Tinted Windows album for proof of that! But we won't let that fact stand in the way of a bit. Proudly part of the Pantheon Podcasts family. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ugly American Werewolf in London: Ace Frehley - Trouble Walkin'

E

y 1989, Ace Frehley had been out of KISS for 7 years and during that time he'd maintained a debaucherous lifestyle including car accidents and very little in the way of new music. Finally Eddie Trunk helped get him signed to Megaforce and got him working. Frehley's Comet released 2 albums in 1987 & !988 (Frehley's Comet, Second Sighting) trying to reestablish himself on the rock circuit. And while 1989's Trouble Walkin' was a solid offering for the time it was released, looking back it's easy to see why it didn't crack the top 100 in the US. Though Ace and Richie Scarlet put together some catchy, heavy riffs with some signature Ace guitar licks, Ace's vocal need help. Left alone they're too bare unless they have the sing-a-long chorus behind him. Shot Full of Rock Five Card Stud and the title track are great straight ahead rockers...until the vocals kick in. As usual, Ace's lyrics are somewhere between silly and bad. But we're Ace fans darnit! So we like hearing what he does. Fractured III connects the record to his 1978 solo and first Frehley's Comet album with a solid instrumental. But lyrics on songs like Back To School, 2 Young 2 Die and Five Card Stud illustrate why KISS had to reign him in on those records. And the mystery is why did Ace cover Hide Your Heart, a song written by Paul Stanley, Desmond Child & Holly Knight, which was originally sung by Bonnie Tyler and that KISS would feature on their album Hot In The Shade? It's a head scratcher but maybe Ace was ready to show his old bandmates that he can still rock, even with their tracks. But as college students, we loved this one and wanted to celebrate Ace as Trouble Walkin' turns 35! First Concert Memories #15: Mick Wall on David Lee Roth 1988

E

All of us have dreamed of going backstage after a killer concert to hangout with our favorite hard rock heroes. For more than 40 years, that's been Mick Wall's job. While writing for Kerrang!, Classic Rock, any number of newspapers and magazines around the world or working on one of his more than two dozen books, Mick Wall has met them all and seen it all. By 1988, you might say that Mick was a bit jaded - been there, done that, got the (free) t-shirt. But in April 1988 in Worcester, Mass while on assignment for the 200th episode of Kerrang!, Mick had the chance to not only witness David Lee Roth live but to hang with him one-on-one through the wee hours of the morning into the next afternoon. We crack up hearing stories about lobster dinners with dancing girls, Steve Vai, and large bags of....party favors. We dive into what a showman Dave was, what a party animal Dave was and what might have become of Dave had he been born in different eras. Mick's dry wit and attention to fun details makes this one of our most fun conversations in the four years of our podcast. Was Dave in real life like he was on MTV and those famous music videos? He was all that and then some! You're gonna love this story from Mick Wall!
