Ep 283History in Five Songs Episode 286: A New Theory on What Caused Punk

In Episode 286, Martin posits a new theory about the origins of punk, arguing that it was less a reaction to progressive rock or metal and more a result of a growing disillusionment with established UK rock institutions from the 1960s. S7 Ep 10The Amalgam Effect – Musicians Who Consistently Defy Genre | MxG Season 7 Episode 10

SUPPORT THIS PODCAST! Join Patreon Get some merch Donate to the fundraiser ~~~~ FEATURED SONG REC – “Almost Everything About You” (from Kite to Camden) What is the amalgam effect? There are artists whose influences come from multiple sources. Those artists are always listening to something new, or something old they’ve never heard before. They’re insatiable. That hunger shows up in their music, which blends all kinds of sounds and styles into several genres and/or one new genre that defines their career. I talk about this effect, many of those artists, and the difference between them and artists who generally stay in one or two lanes. I also talk about how both staying to strictly in one lane, OR veering into a whole new genre disingenuously, are often what derails an artist’s career, and I mention some of those artists. What artists can you think of who do an amalgam of sound? Do you agree with my picks? Who did I miss? Do you prefer these kinds of artists, or ones who do one thing very well? Discuss dammit! Rebel Rockers: Long Beach Legends - The Roots of Sublime’s Greatness

On this episode of Rebel Rockers with Native Wayne, we honor Sublime, the groundbreaking rock reggae trio from Long Beach. Blending punk, reggae, and hip-hop, Bradley Nowell, Eric Wilson, and Bud Gaugh crafted a sound that redefined music, with hits like "Date Rape" sparking their meteoric rise. Sublime's legacy endures through Sublime with Rome and the next generation led by Bradley's son, Jacob. Their DIY ethos and soulful authenticity created a timeless influence on music. Sublime inspired artists like No Doubt’s Gwen Stefani, Sugar Ray’s Mark McGrath, and Michael Franti. Their genre-defying music, led by Bradley’s unique voice and powerful songwriting, remains a blueprint for rock reggae bands like Stick Figure and Rebelution. From underground gigs to chart-topping hits, Sublime’s story is a testament to their artistry and the Long Beach roots that shaped them. Learn more about your ad choices. The Metallica Report 72: Helping Hands Honorees Jeff Ament, Maggie Baird

The week of December 11, 2024 on The Metallica Report… Steff and Renée are getting ready for the fourth biennial Helping Hands Concert & Auction on Friday, December 13, by speaking with two of this year’s honorees. First, Renée catches up with actress Maggie Baird (aka the mother of Billie Eilish and Finneas) from Support + Feed. If that organization sounds familiar, it’s because Support + Feed joined us on the 2024 North American M72 run of shows, spreading the word about their work changing the food equity system through education around a plant-based diet. Next, Renée and Steff enjoy an in-depth chat with Pearl Jam’s Jeff Ament, who discusses his non-profit organization, Montana Pool Service. MPS works to build world-class skate parks and connect youth communities in Montana, Washington, and South Dakota. Though unavailable to join the podcast this week, we still get to hear from Father Greg Boyle, the founder of our third honoree this year, Homeboy Industries. By providing hope, training, and support to formerly gang-involved and previously incarcerated people, Homeboy Industries has evolved into the largest gang intervention, rehab, and re-entry program in the world. I'm In Love With That Song: Broken Homes - "An L.A. Rain"

For one hot moment, Broken Homes were the buzzed-about new band in LA, and big success was ahead. It never materialized. The band cut 3 albums for MCA, but they went nowhere. On this episode, we dig into a track from their first album, one of my favorite LP's from the '80's and a real "desert island" record for me. The album never came out on CD, but if you can track down a copy on vinyl, I highly recommend it. "An L.A. Rain" (Mike Doman) Copyright 1986 Learn more about your ad choices. Prisoners of Rock and Roll -- Having A Blue Christmas With The Blues

E

Our fourth annual Christmas episode! The holidays are supposed to be the happiest time of the year, but let’s face it – some of us are feeling less holly jolly. In our 4th annual Prisoners of Rock and Roll Christmas episode, we’re celebrating having a blue Christmas by talking about the blues. You don’t hear a lot of blues Christmas music on the radio or in the mall these days, but there are some killer versions of Christmas classics as well as some original tunes. So whether you’re on Santa’s naughty list or just trying to survive another family gathering, pour yourself some holiday punch, eggnog, or a bourbon, and take a seat down by the fireplace. Let’s rock out and feel a little blue for Christmas. By the way, this is a really festive time of year for a lot of people. Most of us are spending a ton of time with friends and family. Heck, you might be listening to us in the car on your way to a Christmas party right now. But this time of year can also be overwhelming to a lot of people. Us rock and roll fans need to stick together and take care of ourselves as well as each other. So try to take a few minutes and reach out to a friend or loved one to say hello and see how they’re doing. Just reaching out can have a huge impact on someone. And if you’re ever feeling down, help is always just a phone call away. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is available 24 hours a day at 800 273 8255. We love you guys. Ugly American Werewolf in London: Nicko McBrain of Iron Maiden Tribute

Just before Iron Maiden played their final concert of The Days of Future Past Tour in Sao Paolo, Brazil on December 7, 2024. it was announced that longtime drummer Nicko McBrain would be retiring from the road after 42 years with the band. Soon after the conclusion of the tour, it was announced that Simon Dawson, who has working with Steve Harris in British Lion for the last decade, would be taking his place on the road. However, manager Rod Smallwood has said that Nicko would still be around and would be available to play on any future recording Maiden may endeavor to record. We thought this would be an excellent opportunity to reflect on the career Nicko has forged before and during his stint with Iron Maiden and reflect on what a character he truly is. When we learned that Nicko had suffered a stroke several months before rehearsals began for the Days of Future Past Tour, we speculated that his time in the band would be short. We want to celebrate all the amazing work over the decades and his contributions to Maiden but we'll also contemplate what the band will sound like without their long-time drummer and how Simon Dawson will fit on the upcoming Run For Your Lives Tour in 2025 and beyond. Plus The Wolf shares his story of meeting Nicko at a golf tournament and relive some funny moments throughout his career. UP THE IRONS!!! Shout It Out Loudcast: "Gene & Paul On Fox News - Hannity & Colmes 2002"

E

This week Tom & Zeus review an TV appearance by Gene Simmons & Paul Stanley on FOX News Prime Time show, Hannity & Colmes in 2002. The guys found an old YouTube clip of when Gene & Paul went on Fox News show, Hannity & Colmes. Gene and Paul went on Hannity & Colmes to promote their new book, "KISS The Early Years" However, the hosts, especially Sean Hannity, had other things on his mind. The quick TV appearance took a turn into a whole different conversation. The interview was during an interesting time. It was after 9/11 and before the Iraq war and patriotism was definitely in the air. The guys breakdown the appearance in SIOL fashion. The guys then rank this KISS TV appearance against the previous KISS TV appearances they have reviewed so far. Although this was supposed be a serious appearance, tune in to see if the guys can actually talk politics in a civil way and why the guys can't stop laughing! S5 Ep 5My Rock Moment: Jenny Boyd, '60s Muse and Author of 'Icons of Rock: In Their Own Words'

Jenny Boyd, though not a musician, is well-known in the music industry. Formerly married to Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac, she's also Pattie Boyd's sister and sister-in-law to George Harrison and Eric Clapton. Jenny was surrounded by rock royalty from a young age and experienced many legendary moments in rock history as a result. Drawing on her deep connections in the rock world, Jenny wrote 'Icons of Rock: In Their Own Words' - a compilation of candid interviews with some of the greatest musicians of the '60s, 70s, 80s and today. Joni Mitchell, George Harrison, Don Henley, Eric Clapton and other rock giants draw back the curtain on their creative process, their thoughts on spirituality and the effect that drugs and alcohol may have had on their art. Infused with personal stories of her time in San Francisco during the Summer of Love, meeting George Harrison for the first time and her stay in India with The Beatles, Jenny and I discuss some of the most poignant interviews in the book. Shout It Out Loudcast: Album Review Crew "7800 Fahrenheit"

E

On the 59th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & special guest, Steve Wright from the Podder Than Hell Podcast, review the 1985 album from Bon Jovi, "7800 Fahrenheit." 7800 Fahrenheit is Bon Jovi's second studio album. The young band continued the same basic formula as their debut album. The band was led by charismatic frontman Jon Bon Jovi who was the primary songwriter. Richie Sambora the guitarist also helped write songs with Jon and you could see the beginnings of this legendary duo. David Bryan on keyboards also helped with a few songs. Alec John Such and Tico Torres rounded out the rhythm section. The album was produced by Lance Quinn. The album continued where their debut left off, with some rockers, mid-tempo songs and a ballad. Jon continued his hard working ways to craft an album in between consecutive non stop tours. 7800 Fahrenheit is a polarizing album often panned by Jon, but loved by the fans, especially songs like, In And Out Of Love & Tokyo Road. The album did go platinum and features 3 MTV Videos. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. This was Zeus' pick. So grab your tightest pair of jeans that squeeze your hickory nuts and tune in! Only Three Lads: Steve Wynn from The Dream Syndicate - Top 5 Rock Memoirs

Because we're readers and whatnot, this week we get literate on y'all and discuss some of our favorite rock n' roll memoirs. Our Third Lad knows a thing or two about great rock memoirs, because he just published one...singer, songwriter, guitar hero, baseball aficionado, and now author...Steve Wynn from The Dream Syndicate! His memoir, I Wouldn't Say It If It Wasn't True, is out now from Jawbone Press, covering his earliest days as a kid in LA falling in love with music, and down the road that took him to and through the first era of The Dream Syndicate. As a companion to the book, Fire Records simultaneously released Steve's first new solo album in 14 years, Make It Right, featuring songs that were inspired by the process of writing his memoir and reflecting on his life, from his beginnings in "Santa Monica" to present days on "Roosevelt Avenue". Steve is currently touring the eastern part of the US, with west coast and European dates to follow in early 2025, promising "a night of songs and stories" that you won't want to miss. Keep up on the latest news at https://stevewynn.net. During our conversation, we also cover: The Paisley Underground - the LA neo-psych scene that also spawned The Bangles, Three O'Clock, The Rain Parade, Green on Red, The Long Ryders! The lasting legacy of their classic 1982 debut The Days of Wine and Roses! What's in store for the out of print Dream Syndicate records Medicine Show (1984) and Ghost Stories (1988)? The 21st century return of the Dream Syndicate! Living with a drummer! (Don't worry, it's his wife Linda Pitmon, not Tommy Lee...) Little Steven's Underground Garage Cruise! Baseball! His supergroup The Baseball Project with Linda Pitmon, Scott McCaughey from Young Fresh Fellows / The Minus 5 and Mike Mills and Peter Buck from R.E.M. Also, who is Steve rooting for during the 2024 World Series? You won't want to miss this...and we wouldn't say it if it wasn't true. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ugly American Werewolf in London: 2nd Albums - 5 We Love, 3 We Hate

E

The old adage is that you have your whole life to write your first album and then a few months to write your second. And while some bands may come out of the gate with a HUGE, classic, multi platinum debut album, there is no guarantee that the next will live up to the first one. Sometimes a band will take a big step forward but sometimes the "Sophomore Slump" takes effect and exposes that the band wasn't that great to begin with. And some do very well and are incredibly popular despite the fact that they really aren't that good and don't stand the test of time. The Wolf and Action Jackson have endeavored to come up with 5 2nd albums they love and 3 2nd albums they hate. Now the boys aren't telling you these are the 5 best or 3 worst 2nd albums of all time - these are the 2nd albums that we love and hate, respectively. Some of our loves are cult albums that barely made it to gold and some of our hates are among the biggest selling albums of all time. We think both lists will get you talking and hopefully even make you laugh at points. And for those who say well if you hate it just don't listen, for the most part we would have loved to not listen but they've been forced down our throats for decades. Would Nirvana, Led Zeppelin, Metallica or The Police make your favorites? What about Smashing Pumpkins, Oasis, KISS or The Cult? All have made our lists but you'll have to listen to learn whether they fall on the Love or Hate side of the ledger. In our misspent youth, almost everyone had a copy of Led Zeppelin II in their collection. And later? They also had the CD, right? Is that just us? As often happens this discussions sparks a bigger album argument inspired by a RRHOF all-time list! We all have our "entry story" when it comes to Zeppelin. The second record brought a ton of new fans, and marked the beginning of Eddie Kramer working with Page and the boys in the studio. As we said we'd do in the episode, here's the info we have on the studios used to record Led Zeppelin II, which was was done in multiple studios in the U.S. and the U. Rock is Lit: Detroit on Fire: Guest Host Andrew Smith Talks With Peter Werbe About 1967, Rock ‘n’ Roll, and Revolution in Peter’s Novel ‘Summer On Fire’

In this special episode of Rock is Lit, host Christy Alexander Hallberg hands the mic to teacher, podcaster, and DJ Andrew Smith, who interviews his friend Peter Werbe about Peter’s debut novel, ‘Summer On Fire’. Peter also reads an excerpt from the book. Peter Werbe is a veteran of Detroit’s alternative and commercial media scene, as well as a political activist. A member of the editorial collective of ‘Fifth Estate’ magazine, his work appears in its online archive. His radio career spanned Detroit's major rock stations—WABX, WWWW, WRIF, and WCSX—where he hosted Nightcall, WRIF’s phone-in talk show and the longest-running program of its kind in U.S. radio history (1970–2016). Peter’s novel, written during the pandemic near his 80th birthday, is a fictionalized memoir about the 1967 Detroit Rebellion and its surrounding antiwar, psychedelic rock counterculture. Set in a transformative seven weeks, ‘Summer On Fire’ explores the radical Detroit scene, featuring characters navigating protests, anarchism, fascist opposition, and rock and roll at the Grande Ballroom. Themes of ethical dilemmas echo today’s societal crises. The book also captures the spirit of cultural icons like MC5, The Stooges, Wayne Kramer, and John Sinclair. Andrew Smith, host of Teacher On The Radio, is also a professor of English and religious studies at Tennessee Tech.
