VINYL RELICS/Kongos (1971): The Tape-Loop Frontier

EPYSODE 59: "Kongos" by John Kongos. Guest: John Kongos. Additional commentary by Uncle Herff. This week we drop the needle on "Kongos", the 1972 cult-favourite album that fused glam rock, African rhythms, early sampling, and psychedelic textures long before such mashups became the norm. With exclusive commentary from John Kongos, we explore the bold studio experimentation behind tracks like “He’s Gonna Step on You Again”, a UK Top 5 hit that famously used tape loops and tribal drums, influencing artists from Happy Mondays to U2. Kongos shares firsthand stories about working with producer Gus Dudgeon (Elton John), the intense sessions at Trident Studios, and how the album’s futuristic sound puzzled critics but built a cult following that still grows today. This is a deep-dive into one of the most forward-thinking albums of the era...one that sounds as vital now as it did over 50 years ago. Songfacts Podcast | Jim Keller of Tommy Tutone

Jim Keller has lived more than one musical life. He first made his mark as a guitarist and co-writer in Tommy Tutone — yes, the band behind “867-5309/Jenny.” But that was just the beginning. After years on the road, Jim shifted gears and built a remarkable career behind the scenes, managing artists like Philip Glass and helping shape the business side of some of modern music’s most distinctive voices. Now, he’s returned to his own songwriting roots with End of the World — an album that blends grit, humor, and heart in equal measure. In this episode, Jim talks about what it’s like to reinvent yourself in the music world, how his time with Glass changed the way he thinks about creativity, and the stories behind his new record. Listen in for a conversation that spans decades — from the neon glow of early ‘80s pop to the quiet persistence of an artist still chasing great songs. Enjoying the show? Only Three Lads: Knox Chandler (Psychedelic Furs, Siouxsie) - Top 5 Experimental Albums

E

In music, experimentalism is more than just "that one time in college." This week, we cover the albums that dared to be different, were fearless in their pursuit of breaking new ground, and subverted traditional expectations of what music should sound like. The spirit of experimental music is alive and well on The Sound, the debut solo album by guitarist, cellist, composer producer, arranger, painter, and educator Knox Chandler. This project is a musical memoir depicting the shift in his surroundings from the urbanism of New York, London, and Berlin to the serene rural setting of the Connecticut shoreline. Through 10 diaristic and transportative soundscapes, The Sound incorporates Knox's "Soundribbon" style of meditative, powerfully cinematic guitar, accompanied by upright bass and percussion, and is paired with a book of paintings, sketches, and writings. You no doubt have heard Knox Chandler's work throughout a career that has spanned four decades, as a member of The Psychedelic Furs, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Cyndi Lauper's band, and The Golden Palominos. He's also played, composed, produced, and arranged on dozens of records including REM's Automatic For The People, Depeche Mode's Exciter, David Gahan's Paper Monsters, Paula Cole's Harbinger, and many more. S1 Ep 1(ICYMI) Episode 1: The Precursors--Redux

E

Welcome to Rock N Roll Archaeology! This is a reboot of Episode One: The Precursors, originally released October 15, 2015. We updated and improved it some, and re-released it. Show Notes and Playlist Here We begin in Times Square, late summer of 1945. The war is over. First up, the Baby Boom and a newly-discovered demographic, the white American teenager. This new cohort is huge, with unprecedented economic clout. Young, restless and affluent, and they want to get beyond the timid, conformist popular culture of 1950s America. “Race Records” (an outdated term for rhythm and blues records by African American musicians) become hugely popular with white teenagers. Drawn from the well of sorrow that is the Black American experience, this music has the edge and urgency--the authenticity--these kids are seeking. We meet our first hero - the musical genius Ray Charles - and our first anti-hero, the frenetic, fatally flawed DJ Alan Freed. We shine a light on two grassroots cultural movements that became important later: the Skiffle Craze in the United Kingdom and the Beat Poets of Urban America. 1954 is an inflection point. On the musical front, Bill Haley released the first million-selling Rock N Roll record: “Rock Around The Clock.” That same year, big changes in the political landscape. The Brown v Board of Education decision; and Senator Joseph McCarthy was publically humiliated and discredited. Freedom of Association and Freedom of Expression take a step forward. Paranoid politics and systemic racism are still very much with us in America, but in 1954 it got a little easier, became a little less risky, to be yourself and express yourself. We head to the delivery room: Memphis Recording Service, where we meet the first Rock N Roll superstar, Elvis Presley, and tease Chapter Two. Ep 131See Hear Podcast - Deliver Me From Nowhere (first reaction)

So many biopics feature the story of an artist from cradle to grave....all in 2 hours. Those of you who know me or have listened to the show before know I'm....uh....not a fan of these types of pods. They're often a cherry picked list of moments in the artist's life until the moment of triumph – artistically and in overcoming personal obstacles. Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere does it backwards. Welcome to episode 131 of See Hear Podcast. In Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere, we find Bruce at an artistically satisfying place and being hugely popular (though not as popular as he would get). What does an ambitious artist do following a number 1 record with one of the greatest working bands in America? He goes into a bedroom with a 4 track recorded (new technology for the day), records a bunch of dark personal songs about troubled people....and insists on putting these songs (FROM A CASSETTE) out as his new LP. The film follows the book by Warren Zanes “Deliver Me From Nowhere” which covers the period in exquisite detail. It covers Springsteen's fascination with a serial killer and classic cinema, and how they helped influence his songwriting of the period. The story behind Nebraska is not what you'd expect from a Hollywood film...not about the man who was simultaneously recording the biggest album of his career while he was recording the most personal. The film starts with a superstar who has mental health issues, and needs to deliver something small. If we were doing bonus / Patreon shows, this would most likely be classified as one of those. Instead of badgering my partners Kerry and Tim into seeing this new Springsteen biopic, I went with 4 willing folks to a local cinema, then adjourned to a nearby cafe'. Loaded up with coffee and cake, I plugged in an external microphone into my phone, turned on the voice recorder software, then had a conversation about with my wife Joanne, and our friends Kate and Geoff about the film we had just watched – no time to fashion our thoughts....just an instant gut reaction. Sadly, Joanne couldn't be picked up on the mic with the constant background noises one hears in a busy cafe, so she's been edited out. This episode is short, and we surely missed out salient points that further contemplation might have bought – that doesn't matter. This is an honest reaction. Next month, Kerry, Tim and I will return to the style of show you're familiar with. If you’ve been enjoying the show, please consider giving us a favourable review on iTunes and let your friends know that our show exists. Ugly American Werewolf in London: Simple Minds - Once Upon A Time

By 1985, Simple Minds were coming off a #1 album in the UK with Sparkle in the Rain and sales from all around the world. But it only went to #64 in the US and they needed something to spark greater interest across the pond. When Don't You Forget About Me from The Breakfast Club Soundtrack hit #1 in May 1985, a song they originally resisted, they had that spark and built on that success with memorable performance at Live Aid in Philadelphia. Their next album would need to be special to keep the momentum building. New York producer Jimmy Iovine (Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Nicks, Tom Petty) came to London to work with the boys as they welcomed in new bass player John Giblin. He encourage Jim to emote more - to really sing his heart out - in the studio and his soul is captured on Once Upon A Time. Jim's lyrics are optimistic about the future - the native Glaswegians know where they come from (Oh Jungleland) and can be proud of what they've accomplished (Come a Long Way). Alive and Kicking would be the first single to follow up #1 smash Don't You Forget About Me and soared up the charts, thanks in part to a music video shot in the Pocono Mountains - former Simple Minds drummer Mel Gaynor enlightens us with a funny story from that video shoot! They can get political without getting preachy (Ghostdancing) while bringing you to your feet with glorious salvation (Sanctify Yourself). Released October 21, 1985, Once Upon A Time would be the 2nd consecutive #1 in the UK and the 1st gold record for the band in the US. But what if they put Don't You Forget About Me on it? It was already a #1 and hadn't been on a Simple Minds album. The Wolf believes it would have resulted in millions of more sales and fans for the band in the US but that's a debate you'll have to hear! Only Three Lads: O3L / Big Stir Records Halloween Spoooooktacular!

E

You are a brave and adventurous soul... Surprise, all you groovy ghoulies and "eyeball eaters from outer space!" 'Tis the season to get spooky, so we're going "full-on witch mode" with our friends from Big Stir Records - label founders/mad scientists Rex Broome & Christina Bulbenko from The Armoires and sparkle*jets uk evil genius Michael Simmons - in a brand new Halloween Spoooooooooktacular special! We'll be chatting about some of the most chilling and thrilling songs from the O3L era. Speaking of which...those of us of, uh, let’s say, a certain "vintage" may associate Halloween with the classic 1964 Disneyland record Chilling, Thrilling Sounds of the Haunted House. This fall, Big Stir is scratching a nostalgic itch with the coolest release of the season - Chilling, Thrilling Hooks and Haunted Harmonies, an incredible double album set on eerie bright green vinyl, complete with a playable Big Stir themed board game, and artwork and horrifically humorous narration reminiscent of the Disney record. The biggest trick of all is how many treats are on it - the album contains 21 never before heard Halloween inspired tracks from the incredible Big Stir roster, including many names that have appeared on O3L as guests and/or Weekend Six Packs - Librarians with Hickeys, Splitsville, Graham Parker, The Spongetones (and Steve Stoeckel solo), The Jack Rubies, The Armoires, sparkle*jets uk, Dolph Chaney, Hungrytown, Shplang, and so many more, including - get this - brand new music from ‘60s legends The Strawberry Alarm Clock. It’s a creepily compelling, fun, and unique essential for your Halloween party that you can get from BigStirRecords.com. Songs: • Splitsville - "I Was a Teenage Frankenstein" • The Spongetones - "Spirit World" • Lady Darkevyl (with Chris Church) - "I Watch You Sleep" • The Pepper's Ghost Players - "Spread My Ashes in the Haunted Mansion" Hurry baaaaaaaack. My Rock Moment: Steven Rosen's Tonechaser: Understanding Eddie Van Halen

In this episode of My Rock Moment, I sit down with veteran music journalist Steven Rosen — author of Tonechaser: Understanding Edward: My 26-Year Journey with Edward Van Halen — to uncover the untold story of the man behind the legend: Eddie Van Halen. For more than two decades, Rosen wasn’t just a journalist covering Van Halen, he was a close friend, confidant, and witness to the creative fire that reshaped rock guitar. We revisit that very first night at The Whisky a Go Go, where their friendship began, and talk about the moment Rosen was invited to hear an early cut of Van Halen’s second album — long before the world had any idea what was coming. Steven shares an intimate look at Eddie’s humility, his complex relationship with David Lee Roth, and the moments that defined both the man and the music. Whether you’re a lifelong fan, a guitarist chasing tone, or someone simply curious about the soul behind the sound, this episode peels back the myth to reveal the man. VINYL RELICS/Willie Nile (1980): Punk Poet of the Village

EPYSODE 58: "Willie Nile", by Willie Nile. Guest: Willie Nile. Additional commentary by Uncle Herff. This week we spotlight the electric, poetic debut of Willie Nile, whose 1980 self-titled album emerged straight from the streets of New York’s post-punk underground and instantly drew comparisons to Dylan, Springsteen, and Lou Reed. With exclusive commentary from Willie himself, we revisit the making of this cult classic, recorded in the heart of Manhattan during a time when punk grit met folk wisdom. From the raw energy of “Vagabond Moon” to the street-lit soul of “That’s the Reason,” Nile reflects on the scenes and sounds that shaped his early songs. Discovered by Clive Davis and praised by The Who, this album remains a landmark for fans of literate rock 'n' roll. Whether you're discovering it for the first time or dropping the needle again, this epysode captures the urgency and charm of an artist who’s never stopped chasing truth through song. Spoiler alert: he's still going strong. His newest album may be his best... Decibel Geek Podcast - Remembering Ace - Ep646

E

This week, we release an episode we’ve dreaded making — but knew we had to. Last week, we lost Ace Frehley. A giant part of our childhoods, and of rock ‘n’ roll itself, is gone. The songs, the solos, the character, the swagger — the guitar pyrotechnics — have all gone the way of Jendell. In this episode, we share our thoughts on Ace’s passing, his legacy, his place in our collective consciousness, and the reminder of how fragile life can be. But above all, we find ways to laugh. It doesn’t take long to remember the funny, unforgettable moments that made Ace who he was — and we share plenty of those too. It’s a tough one for us, and for many of you. We miss him. Prisoners of Rock and Roll -- A Magical Mystery Tour to Abbey Road Studios

E

Abbey Road Studios in London, England was the world’s first purpose-built recording studio. Opened way back in 1931, this building and the people inside have been at the cutting edge of recording technology for over 90s years. Abbey Road Studios is most famous for being where The Beatles recorded almost all of their music, but it also drove innovation with stereo recording, multitracks, editing, and the shift from analog to digital recording. In addition to all of those amazing Beatles records – which we’ll get to – some other stuff recorded at Abbey Road includes Dark Side of the Moon and albums from Kanye West, Lady Gaga, Oasis, the Hollies, Radiohead, and the Zombies. Music scores for Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Marvel movies, and video game soundtracks for Halo, Call of Duty, and World of Warcraft. They even recorded some of Winston Churchill’s famous speeches during World War II to help keep morale high. From classical roots to rock rebellion, Abbey Road’s always been ahead of the game, rewriting rules along the way. So kick back, feel the beat, and join us as we explore the studio that turned sound into a revolution. Let’s roll! Episode Playlist Check out our episode playlist here. Ep 189Love That Album Podcast - Interview with Graham 'Buzz' Bidstrup

Chances are if you have ever been asked “Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again?” and you answered “No Way. Get F#$*ed. F#$* Off”, it means: (a) You're a fan of The Angels, (b) You're insensitive, or (c) You're both. Welcome to episode 189 of Love That Album podcast. I'm joined by genuine Australian rock music royalty, drummer Graham “Buzz” Bidstrup....but his career extends to so much more than being drummer and songwriter for The Angels (Angel City in North America) and Ganggajang. He's been an audio engineer, producer, film composer, multi instrumentalist, artist manager, and CEO of the hugely important Thumbs Up Foundation dedicated to Indigenous health, literacy, and numeracy instigated by the late Jimmy Little. If you have any Australian rock albums from the 70s onwards in your collection, chances are very strong Buzz has some connection to those records. He's just released a memoir called “No Secrets: An Oz-Rock Memoir of Music and Mayhem”. I found it a great read because it covers more than stories about performance and band politics (although they're definitely in there). Buzz went to places many other musicians didn't...it wasn't always a pleasant ride, but he's here to tell the tale, and his proudest achievement is....well, you'll have to tune in to find out. My thanks to literary agent, Brendan Fredericks for making the introduction. The book should be available at your local bricks and mortar book shop in Australia, or wherever you order books / ebooks online anywhere on the planet. If you want to read about Jimmy Little's Thumbs Up Foundation, then go to https://thumbsup.org.au/ If you’ve been enjoying the show, please consider giving us a favourable review on whatever podcast platform you listen on and let your friends know that our show exists. Ugly American Werewolf in London: Rush Reunion Hot Take

Long time listeners know that Rush is one of The Wolf's top 3 favorite bands of all time. The Wolf & Action Jackson camped out to see Rush on the Roll The Bones Tour and The Wolf has seen them 12x live. After reviews of Fly By Night and Caress of Steel at 50 plus an interview with longtime collaborator Hugh Syme on the 250th and a First Concert Memories show on the mini-tour between Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures, we figured we were done with Rush episodes in 2025. Then the biggest bomb since the Oasis reunion dropped.....Geddy and Alex are going to tour!!! This announcement, of course, sparked huge excitement in the world of Rush and caused the faithful to ask many questions, none more pertinent (or is it Peartinent?) than who would be playing drums. After the death of drummer/lyricist Neil Peart in 2020, Rush fans knew the band they loved was done as The Professor was irreplaceable. But to do tribute to him and to celebrate the amazing music they all made together, someone would have to step up. Turns out that brave, talented soul is Anika Nilles - yes, a woman who is a very accomplished drummer and one The Wolf saw play with Jeff Beck in London not long before his death (see episode 90). She definitely has some chops and apparently won't be the only musician joining Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson on stage. Quick note: we recorded this hot take shortly after the announcement of the tour. Between recording and publishing, the band announced additional dates due to overwhelming demand. Also, the tickets went on sale after we recorded so you have to stick around until the end to see which city your heroes might be going to and if they were shutout the way they were for the Oasis reunion tour. But either way you can hear the excitement in our voices about one of our very favorites playing live one more time... This week Tom & Zeus review the 1977 Love Gun which was in support of their 6th studio album, Love Gun. This is SIOL's 11th KISS tour reviewed. Love Gun was released on June 17, 1977 and the tour began on July 8, 1977 in Canada and ended September 5, 1977. This is probably KISS at its peak. The band was still continuing to get bigger and better. This is before the solo albums, before the movie and before the major cracks began to take its toll. The stage for the tour is probably the most famous, with the staircases and Peter's drum riser. The costumes are probably KISS' most famous as well. The setlist featured 5 new songs from Love Gun and many of the classic songs from the first three albums, including Deuce were dropped. As usual, the guys breakdown the costumes, stage, set list and overall tour. They then rank the costumes, stage, set list and overall tour against the previous 10 tours reviewed so far. So pull out your Love Gun and enjoy KISS at its peak and another great tour episode! See Hear Episode 130 - Interview with Ido Fluk, director of Koln 75

History is full of famous tales that are told from one perspective. As we all know, everyone has their own version of how something went down....even if it doesn't contradict the popular narrative, there's always something that happened in the background whose importance is diluted or not told at all. Welcome to episode 130 of See Hear Podcast. In 1974, a German teenage jazz fan named Vera Brandes was inspired to book jazz pianist Keith Jarrett to perform at the Koln Opera House. This seemed like a gigantic task however you look at it. Vera had gained a little experience in helping touring musicians perform around Germany (already a big task) but getting one of the then new leading lights in jazz to perform a large venue like the Koln Opera House at the age of 18???? Adding to the degree of difficulty, Jarrett arrived in Koln to discover that there was only an out of tune, broken pedal baby grand with stuck keys. Things happened, the concert was recorded, and the resulting album sold more than any other solo piano jazz album in history. The thing is....everyone talks about Jarrett's ability to improvise on a (partly repaired) piano for an hour and create wonderful art. The part that is often missing or diluted from the story is how Vera Brandes made this happen at all. If she hadn't been so inspired to promote this show, the biggest selling piano jazz album ever, belongs to someone else. Director and writer Ido Fluk was so inspired by this story, he decided to make a film to tell it from Vera's side of the tale. Sure, Jarrett is a strong part of the filmed version of events, but make no mistake – this is Vera's story. She went on to be a successful album producer and music promoter, but this is the tale she wanted told. As the analogy is made in the film, sometimes you have to tell the story of the scaffolding to appreciate the story of painting the Sistine Chapel ceiling. On the latest episode of See Hear, Tim, Kerry and I were thrilled to chat with Ido about what the definition of success is, how making great art is not always about the artist solely, and how his own journey to write the tale in some ways reflected Keith's approach to improvisational music composition. Mala Emde as Vera and John Margaro as Keith are real revelations. Both actors reveal their characters as 3 dimensional in a way that may not have been in lesser hands. Ido is an incredible director who really knows how to tell a story and how to get the best out of his cast. The film has already had festival screenings in Europe and the US, and is about to get a wider cinema release there. Hopefully, it gets wider worldwide release, before landing on streaming or physical media in the not too distant future. Trust me – you can listen and enjoy this conversation independently of seeing the film....but rush to it first chance you get. Our huge thanks to Ido for his generosity of time and conversation, and to publicist Sasha Berman for making it happen. VINYL RELICS//Rediscovering Quill (1970): The Woodstock Band That Got Away

EPYSODE 57: "Quill" by Quill. Guest: Quill band member Phil Thayer. Additional commentary from Uncle Herff. This week we spin the self-titled 1970 debut album by Quill, the Boston-based psychedelic rock band best known for opening day 2 of Woodstock and then seemingly vanishing into the mist of rock history. Featuring exclusive commentary from Phil Thayer, Quill's multi-instrumentalist, we dive into the stories behind the band’s brief but electric rise, their unique fusion of psych, prog, and theatrical performance, and why their album never got the recognition it deserved...despite being on a major label. Whether you're a crate-digging psych-rock obsessive or discovering Quill for the first time, this deep dive is your backstage pass into one of rock’s most fascinating "what could’ve been" stories. I hope you dig "Quill" as much as I do. - Farmer John ===CONNECT & SUPPORT=== Transport yourself into the realm of grooviness by supporting us on Patreon using this link --> patreon.com/FarmerJohnMusic Use this link to follow us on Facebook --> https://www.facebook.com/farmerjohnmusic/ Use this link to follow us on Instagram --> https://www.instagram.com/vinylrelics/ Use this link to follow us on TikTok --> https://www.tiktok.com/@vinylrelicspodcast Use this link to follow us on BlueSky --> https://bsky.app/profile/farmerjohnmusic.bsky.social And find us on X @VinylRelicsPod Email me @ [email protected] ===LINKS=== Listen to Quill's Woodstock performance here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WmbfcDl7PsU&list=RDWmbfcDl7PsU&start_radio=1 ===THE MUSIC=== Songs used in this Epysode, in order of appearance.
