Ugly American Werewolf in London: Hugh Syme Interview
EWe at The Wolf are excited to present our 250th episode of UAWIL and want to take a moment to thank all our loyal listeners & social media followers. Building this show and the community of fellow rock fans has been such a fun and sometimes magical adventure around the world these past 5 years. We want to express our sincere thanks for coming on the journey with us. Also, we like to do big guests on our 50th shows - Ryan Condal EP of House of the Dragon Ep 50, Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets live (after welcoming Gary Kemp and Guy Pratt on earlier to promote the show) Ep 100, Steve Kilbey of The Church Ep 150 and Steve Howe of Yes Ep 200. And we are proud to welcome one of rock music's most celebrated and contracted cover artists, Hugh Syme. Hugh is best known for his work with Rush over 50 years as their first collaboration, Caress of Steel, is 50 this year. We learned from Hugh first hand how his original piece of art was given the sepia tone at print which we all know and the songs which inspired the front and back covers. We hear about working with Neil Peart, Bob Ezrin, David Coverdale, Jimmy Page and the many models he immortalized with iconic album covers. Hugh is also an accomplished musician in his own right and talks about recording with Rush, working with former guest of UAWIL Jim McCarty of The Yardbirds and jamming with Aerosmith. We found Hugh to be soft spoken yet wryly funny as he related tales of living in London as a teenager, working as a musician in Toronto, and the 80s and 90s living in LA when it was the heart of the music business. And for you Rush fans, listen until the end as he announces he just submitted his artwork for an upcoming Rush anniversary reissue of one of our favorite 1980's Rush records. We had a delightful conversation with Hugh and we hope you enjoy it. Thanks again for all the support these 250 episodes - it means the world to us. Can we make it to 1,000??? Time will tell but if you keep listening and telling us what you want to hear about, we'll keep making them. Thank you all!! I'm In Love With That Song: Humble Pie - "Stone Cold Fever"
Humble Pie is often overshadowed by bands like Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, and Queen, but they were a considered a "supergroup" when they formed in 1969-- fronted by Steve Marriott from the Small Faces and Peter Frampton from The Herd. Their first 2 albums are a mixed bag, but by the time they signed with A&M Records in 1970 they had refined their style down to a bluesy, hard-rockin' sound. Rock On (1971) was their most successful album to date and features "Stone Cold Fever", which is itself a stone cold classic. First Concert Memories #26: Van Halen 5150 with Ilan Fong
EOn the 26th edition of First Concert Memories, we go back to 1986 to hear the story of one young rock fan's first ever Van Halen concert. Our Pantheon Podcasts brother Ilan Fong of What's Hot in the Strip Clubs was only 8 or 9 years old when he heard his older sister playing Van Halen I on her stereo. From that moment, his life was changed and was always curious about the music coming from the rooms of his older siblings. He'd wanted to see the 1984 tour but he was too young and his older brother told him because he'd just seen the Diver Down Tour, he would sit out 1984 and then take Ilan to the next one. The only problem there is the band broke up. David Lee Roth went solo and Van Halen famously replaced him with former Montrose singer Sammy Hagar. Hear how Ilan looked forward to finally seeing his guitar hero Eddie Van Halen perform his immortal solo live in Pittsburgh in August of 1986. We dissect the setlist (so few Dave era songs), discuss what Sammy was up to while the other guys did their solos, and where it ranked among all the Van Halen and David Lee Roth live shows. And as a bonus, he tells a story of intrigue with Guns N Roses as they returned to Montreal for the first time after the Axl Rose meltdown that led to a riot. A tale of strip clubs, drug dealers, and snowball fights that you'll definitely enjoy! Only Three Lads: Flying Nun Records (with Sharif Dumani from Exploding Flowers)
EIt's time for another label spotlight, as we count down some of the best singles from the legendary New Zealand indie Flying Nun Records. Joining us for this discussion is a musician who, despite being on the other side of the world in Los Angeles, has felt the impact of Flying Nun very profoundly - Sharif Dumani from Exploding Flowers. Flying Nun was formed in Christchurch in 1981 by music store manager Roger Shepherd. Described by The Guardian as "one of the world's great independent labels", Flying Nun is notable for bringing global attention to the "Dunedin Sound", often characterized by jangly guitars and a lo-fi, DIY production. Pivotal bands on the Flying Nun in the '80s and '90s include The Clean, The Chills, The Bats, Tall Dwarfs, Sneaky Feelings, Straitjacket Fits, 3Ds, Look Blue Go Purple, The Verlaines, and Jean-Paul Sartre Experience. The label continues to flourish, with a crop of 21st century artists like Betchadupa, Aldous Harding, Fazerdaze, The Courtneys, and Vera Allen. Exploding Flowers are a Los Angeles quartet who have crafted their own universe of guitar-based pop, with its flourishes of piano, organ, synthesizers, vibraphone and glockenspiel on top of a foundational rhythm section. Led by Sharif Dumani, who has worked with a variety of artists from '60s underground heroes Nick Garrie and Silver Apples; punk and post-punk pioneers such as Alice Bag (The Bags), Rachel Love (Dolly Mixture), Jowe Head (Swell Maps, Television Personalities), and Nikki Sudden (Swell Maps); and artists and bands like Cody Chesnutt, Sex Stains, the Moon Upstairs, Classics Of Love, and many more. Watermelon/Peacock is Exploding Flowers' third release packed with analog production, poetic lyricism, and the same strong melodies and hooks we’ve now come to expect from a band that prioritizes its songwriting with smart left turns. Both economic and expansive, they utilize all measures to craft something both beautiful, grand, and driving. Ugly American Werewolf in London: The Replacements - Tim
EBy 1985, The Replacements had seen and done a few things. They'd recorded a couple of records (see our review of Let It Be at 40) and been out on some tours. They'd made enough noise that they were signed to major label Sire and were ready to take on the world with bigger shows, music videos and tv appearances. But wait, were they? The boys were still drinking heavily thanks to Bob Stinson and Paul Westerberg's crippling stagefright. They still hated doing any kind of promotion, which they saw as selling out and not punk. And when they finally made it on Saturday Night Live in early 1986 to promote their 1985 classic, Tim, they were banned for life for Westerberg's use of the f word on live tv. However, Westerberg's poignant songwriting and raspy vocals were at the top of their game and Tim is considered a true masterpiece of the 1980s. It may not have even gone gold, but songs like Hold My LIfe, Kiss Me On The Bus and Dose of Thunder not only showed that they could arrange a quality pop song but could address issues that may be in juxtaposition from their hard rockin punk riffs. Swingin Party talks about how hard it is to be an introvert in forced social situations, Little Mascara is the tale of a girl with bad taste in men who loses nothing when her loser guy finally leaves her and Left Of The Dial captures life on the road between college towns for a band trying to make it. Originally, the album had a bad mix. However, thanks to a 2023 remix as part of a box set from Ed Stasium, these songs can now be heard clearly and loud the way they were always supposed to be heard. As Tim turns 40, we celebrate what is likely The Replacements greatest achievement and go track by track to show why everyone should be familiar with this 1985 gem. Songfacts Podcast | Pete Droge Interview
In this episode, singer-songwriter Pete Droge joins us—a distinctive ’90s alt-folk voice known for jangly guitars, sharp humor, and melodies that stay with you long after the song ends. You might remember him best for his breakthrough single, “If You Don’t Love Me (I’ll Kill Myself),” a tongue-in-cheek anthem of romantic volatility that quickly became a cult favorite. But Pete’s creative journey has always gone deeper than one clever hook: his latest album, Fade Away Blue, unfolds as a cinematic, introspective narrative exploring themes like adoption, grief, identity, and healing. In this episode, Pete opens up about the deeply personal stories behind these songs, how his songwriting has evolved, how his health journey has impacted his music, and the surprise new twists he’s bringing to live versions of his early favorites. Only Three Lads: Top 5 "One Man Band" Albums
EGet ready for the most unintentionally sexist O3L yet! We tried very hard to steer away from the phrase "one man band" during this episode...only to pick albums almost exclusively by one man bands (except for a bonus nod to Enya). We tried. Dang you, unintentional sexism!! Anyway, the focus this week is albums where one man...er, human...mostly did it all. All the vocals. All the instruments. In many cases, all of the writing and production. The albums recorded in this fashion during the O3L era have been wildly influential for DIY musicians today, including today'sThird Lad, Minorcan's Ryan Anderson. With a career stretching back over 20 years, including three full-band records, Ryan Anderson's latest self-released Minorcan album, the appropriately titled Rock Alone, is a basement arena rock tour-de-force. Featuring eight musically rich and lyrically insightful songs from the pen of the Asheville, NC-based artist, Rock Alone will appeal to fans of roots rock, punk, and classic singer-songwriters alike. Rock Alone is now available on vinyl, CD, and digital: https://minorcan.bandcamp.com Thanks to Mike Turner from Crashing Through Publicity for the connection! Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 129See Hear Podcast - Bad Brains: A Band In DC
EPunk music branched out in the late 70s / early 80s into a harder, faster, thrashier style than its earlier predecessor. If (as is often claimed) the original wave of punk was a reaction to the complexity of prog and the lack of danger in other forms of popular music, then hardcore was the next phase of that during the era of post-punk. It was about catharsis and screaming out about injustice. Then there was Bad Brains. Welcome to episode 129 of See Hear Podcast. Tim has selected the 2012 documentary Bad Brains: A Band In DC for round table discussion. Bad Brains brought something different to the table for their time. In America in the early eighties, punk bands generally weren't playing reggae music as a regular part of their sets. Certain British bands were combining punk energy with a reggae outlook in their music. Bad Brains had gone from being influenced by the jazz fusion stylings of Return To Forever to being converted to punk via the Sex Pistols (already making them unique). Seeing Bob Marley perform made them convert to Rastafarianism and incorporate reggae as well as hardcore punk into their music – not a hybrid, but two sides of the same coin. The documentary goes back and forth between current day events (at the time of filming) and archival footage of the band to tell their story. We get a worrisome start with a “how-did-we-get-here?” approach to the rest of the film.....a trope I'm quite fond of. In a way, the Bad Brains tale could be the story of millions of bands, but they're seen as hugely exciting pioneers of what they do. Many important bands that followed sang their praises as an influence (Beastie Boys, Nirvana....) HR, their “lead throat” gradually became more and more unstable in his behaviour, and in a time where no one was using the expression “mental health”, his behaviour was probably explained away as “that's just HR”, rather than investigating if there was something wrong. Sadly, Kerry wasn't available, but Tim and I discussed positive mental attitudes, wearing motorcycle helmets on stage, not showing up to gigs, punk that wasn't nihilistic, and much more. The film may be found online at: https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6e5wnw If you’ve been enjoying the show, please consider giving us a favourable review on iTunes and let your friends know that our show exists. Ugly American Werewolf in London: The Black Crowes Live in '25
EThe Wolf has had a complicated relationship with The Black Crowes. As a young man, he felt the music industry had conspired to anoint the Crowes as the next big thing in rock. MTV, rock radio, Rolling Stone, etc all seemed to be on the Crowes bandwagon and were shoving them down our throats (or that's what it seemed like). The fact that their first single was a cover and Chris Robinson's cocky attitude just didn't jibe with what our host was looking for in the early 90s. However, after seeing them open for the Grateful Dead in 1995, he bore witness to what a great live band they were. So while he still may have had issues with their front man and his attitude, the fact of the matter were they were the real deal live. But when his idol Jimmy Page joined the Crowes for a tour and eventually released a live album with them, again he was despondent that his biggest guitar hero had taken up with this band he didn't love. BTW - the newly released deluxe edition of them Live at the Greek is a killer Crowes or Zeppelin collectible. in 2024, Aerosmith was supposed to do one final tour and the Black Crowes were slated to open for them. When Aerosmith was forced to cancel the tour, The Wolf found himself more disappointed in missing the Crowes than the last gasp of Aerosmith. So when the Black Crowes came to town as a headliner, The Wolf wasn't going to miss his chance and he wasn't disappointed. Hear him discuss with Action Jackson the band, their show, the power of Chris Robinson's voice, the guitar porn, the stuff he didn't know and the Rolling Stones cover that he wasn't expecting. My Rock Moment: Blondie Chaplin - Legendary Guitarist, Singer and Former Beach Boy
My Rock Moment had the extraordinary privilege of catching up with Blondie Chaplin, a true legend whose musical journey reads like a who's-who of rock history. Born in Durban, South Africa, he first made waves as a teen with The Flames, eventually catching the attention of Carl Wilson, who helped bring him into the Beach Boys family in the early 1970s. During our conversation, Blondie took me back to that pivotal era - remembering how he and Ricky Fataar joined the group following Bruce Johnston's departure and Dennis Wilson’s hand injury. It was a time when the band sought new identity and creative depth, and Blondie’s soulful presence helped shape that fresh direction. We delved into the making of "Sail On, Sailor," the standout track from Holland (1973), which Blondie famously sang lead on. He shared how the song wasn’t just another composition. Recorded in a barn outside of Amsterdam and finished at Village Recorders in L.A., Blondie recalled how Carl and the rest of the band coaxed him into singing it, and how the performance eventually anchored the album. Then we turned to his time with The Rolling Stones, where from 1997 onward, Blondie became an invaluable collaborator - touring, recording, and contributing acoustic guitar, percussion, and backing vocals for around ten years. He reflects on what it was like stepping into that legendary circle. It was one of those interviews that reminds you: some musicians don’t just witness rock history - they help write it. Only Three Lads: The Membranes' John Robb - Top 5 Blackpool Artists
EBlackpool, Lancashire lies on the Irish Sea on the northwest coast of England, situated roughly 50-some miles north of Liverpool and 50-some miles west of Manchester. This seaside destination may conjure up visions of tourists, the Promenade, Pleasure Beach, or Blackpool Tower, but this week we focus on Blackpool as a crucial stop on the musical map. Joining us for this engaging discussion is one of Blackpool's favourite musical sons, John Robb! John was outside enjoying a lovely sunny day in Manchester, and we were lucky to get nearly an hour of his time before his phone connection went kaput. John has been at the centre of Blackpool post-punk legends the Membranes from their original 1977-1990 run to their post-hiatus return since 2009. Their initial era (including their three UK Top 20 indie albums and three Top 20 indie singles) is covered on Cherry Red's comprehensive 5 CD box set, Everyone's Going Triple Bad Acid, Yeah! They added to their already impressive body of work in the 21st century with two of their finest and most ambitious albums yet: 2015's Dark Matter/Dark Energy and 2019's What Nature Gives...Nature Takes Away. But wait, there's far more to this multi-faceted artist.
