Shout It Out Loudcast: Album Review Crew "Ultimate Sin" With Chris Jericho
EOn the 69th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & special guest, SIOL Hall Of Famer, wrestling superstar, lead singer of Fozzy & Kuarantine, Chris Jericho review the 1986 Ozzy Osbourne album, "Ultimate Sin." Fresh out of the Betty Ford Clinic, Ozzy was presented with songs from his guitar great Jake E. Lee. Bob Daisley once again added lyrics, but did not perform on the album. Ozzy had a new rhythm section, Phil Soussan on bass and Randy Castillo on drums. Ultimate Sin was Ozzy's highest charting studio album at the time at #6. The album went double platinum and Ozzy released three videos for the album, including the much played on MTV, "Shot In The Dark." The album is controversially called Ozzy's "hair metal" album by some, but it is filled with Ozzy's signature vocals and blistering guitar from Jake E. Lee. This was the Patreon pick and the third Ozzy Osbourne album reviewed on ARC and Jericho's leading 4th appearance as well. Only Three Lads: '80s Legends TRANSLATOR - Top 5 Album Bookends
EHow tough was it to pick our "album bookends" this week (that is, albums that have a great first and last track)? You could say that's impossible, that's im-poss-i-ble. But, fortunately, we're everywhere that you are! We're un-alone for this discussion, because (if you couldn't have guessed) we have guitarist/singer/songwriter Steve Barton and drummer Dave Scheff from one of the best American bands of the '80s, Translator! Translator released four excellent albums for 415/Columbia: Heartbeats and Triggers (1982), No Time Like Now (1983), Translator (1985), and Evening of the Harvest (1986). At the end of their initial run, they played a final gig at the Farm in their home base of San Francisco. Captured on a cassette, nearly 40 years later, that incendiary live set is out for the first time on download, LP, or CD as Beyond Today: Live at the Farm San Francisco: 1986. from Liberation Hall. https://translatorlive.bandcamp.com As an added treat for fans, Beyond Today also contains two brand new Translator songs, "These Days to Come" and "With Your Dreams", both wonderfully mixed by Ed Stasium. Ugly American Werewolf in London: The Police - Zenyatta Mondatta
By 1980, The Police were really on a roll. Their first two albums, Outlandos d'Amour and Regatta de Blanc had introduced their punk/reggae stylings to the world and had earned platinum awards on both sides of the Atlantic. Their success meant they were in demand - as a live act around the world and in the studio by A&M records. Also due to their success, they had to record outside of the UK and chose Wisseloord Studio in the Netherlands to work on their third record, Zenyatta Mondatta. However, they had to wrap up the Regatta de Blanc tour, retreat to The Netherlands with whatever they had been writing on the road, run off to Ireland and Milton Keynes for a couple of shows, record and mix the album all in one month before they disembarked for their next tour. Though they were working with Nigel Gray, producer of their first two albums, they didn't have time to explore the songs as much as they just needed to lay them down so they could release the record on time. Still, under all that pressure, they managed to cobble together a fine album that would go double platinum in the US. Thanks in large part to the lead single Don't Stand So Close To Me, an ode to Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov based on Sting's experience as a teacher, which would be the boys first #1 in the UK and first Top 10 in the US. Though the lyrics may have been troubling, the song is an upbeat dance tune - something The Police would master while talking about famine (Driven To Tears), the importance of the words people say (De Doo Doo Doo, De Da Da Da) and the monotony of life on the road (Man In A Suitcase). Of course Sting did most of the writing but Andy Summers contributed the Grammy winning Behind My Camel (instrumental) and Stewart Copeland offered Bombs Away & The Other Way of Stopping. The Police never liked the mix on the record and felt they could have done better. They rerecorded the two singles in an ill-fated reunion attempt in 1986 and Sting would rework Shadows In The Rain on Dream of The Blue Turtles. But for Police fans this does stand the test of time and we celebrate Zenyatta Mondatta as it turns 45. First Concert Memories #27: Led Zeppelin with Tony Michaelides
As teenagers, The Wolf & Action Jackson dreamed of seeing Led Zeppelin live. However, the boys came of age in the 1980s after the band had broken up following the death of John Bonham. They were forced to live with ill-fated one-off reunions like Live Aid, Atlantic Records 40th and Knebworth. While they jumped at the chance to see Page/Plant in the mid-90s doing reworked versions of Zeppelin classics, they knew it would never be the same as a proper Led Zeppelin concert back in the day. On this 27th edition of First Concert Memories, the monthly sidecast from the hosts of The Ugly American Werewolf in London Rock Podcast, the boys are psyched to speak with Tony Michaelides. Tony had the rare privilege to see Led Zeppelin as a teenager in Manchester right before they blasted their way to superstardom. He tells the story of Robert Plant inviting him backstage to meet the rest of the guys in the band after the show and how having a signed Zeppelin poster made him the talk of the school yard that next week. However, this was actually just the beginning of Tony going backstage and interacting with artists as he would eventually have a 4 decade career in the music biz working with such luminaries as David Bowie, Peter Gabriel, Steve Winwood and more. Tony has gone on to write books about his experience in the industry and hosts a podcast, Moments That Rock, which share some of his amazing stories from over the years. We may not always be able to keep him on point but we do talk a bit about the show, Zeppelin's place in history and how the industry has changed over the years. A fun chat with a true rock veteran! My Rock Moment: Michael Des Barres - Murdoc, Live Aid, and Zeppelin Nights
Before becoming a rock ‘n’ roll frontman, Michael Des Barres was making his mark on screen—starring alongside Sidney Poitier in the 1967 classic To Sir, With Love. But it wasn’t long before he traded the film set for the stage, forming glam rock outfit Silverhead in the early ’70s before moving on to Detective, one of the few bands signed to Led Zeppelin’s legendary Swan Song label. Hanging with Page, Plant, and Bonham was all part of the ride. In this episode of My Rock Moment, Michael shares his wild journey through music and acting—from those early days in London to writing one of the biggest songs of the 80s, to stepping in with The Power Station just days before Live Aid, and later, his unforgettable run as Murdoc on MacGyver. We also talk about his time with Pamela Des Barres, his show on Little Steven’s Underground Garage, and the wise advice Sidney Poitier gave him early on. Michael Des Barres has lived a life where Hollywood and rock ’n roll collide—and he’s got the stories to prove it. Ugly American Werewolf in London: Steve Hackett - Voyage of the Acolyte
1975 found Genesis in a time of transition. After coming off a lengthy and technically difficult tour for their 1974 album The Lamb LIes Down On Broadway, most everyone was a little burned out. Peter Gabriel ended up leaving the band to embark on a solo career (one that would land him in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame) and the band were left with a lengthy audition process to replace him. Meanwhile, guitarist Steve Hackett had been accumulating music he'd written to keep him sane on the road during the difficult Lamb tour. But not only did Steve have pieces leftover from Genesis sessions, he'd begun to write pieces that might not make sense in the context of the band - acoustic pieces and songs written for a woman's voice. So while on a break from the band, he conjured up Voyage of the Acoylyte - his first solo record released on the same label as Genesis, Charisma. To help Steve lay down these track, he enlisted the help of bandmates Mike Rutherford and Phil Collins (who would go onto replace Gabriel as the lead singer of Genesis after dozens of singers were deemed unworthy). The opening Ace of Wands is a real showcase for Steve's guitar playing - crisp tone with technique that creates a rich soundscape. And while he does do a bit of singing on the record, he leaves the vocals to more capable collaborators like Sally Oldfield on Shadow of the Hierophant and Phil Collins on Star of Sirius. While some of this might have made sense on a Genesis album, some of the acoustic pieces or parts accompanied by his brother John Hackett on flute stand out as something different to what his band would usually produce. With a loose concept around the names of Tarot Cards, Voyage of the Acolyte takes you on a heroes journey with all sorts of incredible textures and sounds with Steve's guitar as the main focus. 50 years later, he still plays these songs live and they fit in very well with the classic Genesis songs that Steve still honors live. Only Three Lads: Top 5 Beatles Covers w/ Arthur Alexander (Poppees, Sorrows)
EAs arguably the single most important, most influential group in pop music history, The Beatles have been honored with thousands of cover versions. This week, Uncle Gregg, Brett, and Third Lad Arthur Alexander hand pick some of the fabbest and gearest of 'em all. 101 episodes ago, power pop hero Arthur Alexander joined us to recount his fascinating life and career: growing up in Communist Poland, getting exiled to the U.S., and being a driving force in two of the NYC's seminal power pop bands - The Poppees and Sorrows - before putting out his fine solo records One Bar Left and ...steppin' out! He was one of our favorite guests yet, so we were ecstatic to have him join us for this topic that is near and dear to his heart. Big Stir Records presents Parting Is Such Sweet Sorrow, the long lost thrid album by NYC power pop legends SORROWS, recorded in 1981 during a one-night session at the peak of their energy. This final chapter in their musical legacy includes the indie hit “Out Of My Head” and ten unreleased originals, plus three covers. The band, formed from the ashes of The Poppees, had previously made waves with their debut Teenage Heartbreak and faced struggles with their ill-fated second album (Love Too Late), which nearly ended their career. Forty years later, Arthur Alexander and the band recovered the rights to the material, leading to the surprise 2021 release of Love Too Late... The Real Album. Parting Is Such Sweet Sorrow captures the band in raw form, fueled by the frustration of industry interference, delivering high-energy rock tracks like “Never Mind,” the heartfelt elegy for John Lennon “Cricket Man,” and the rockabilly scorcher “Let Me Know.” Recorded at Mediasound Studios in NYC, it’s a powerful testament to the band’s sound and vision, offering a cohesive, fiery farewell with timeless tracks that reflect both their struggle and resilience. Thanks to Rex Broome and Christina Bulbenko from Big Stir Records. You are both amazing! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ep 188Love That Album - Blues-a-thon
Blues music means different things to different people. The popular image is of a guitarist playing 12-bar blues of the 1-4-5 variety singing about his or her troubled life. This doesn't take into consideration songs of lust, politics, travel or any subject really that doesn't involve the traditional 12 bar form. The songs can be downcast, yes, but also happy and celebratory. They can have the guitar as the focus instrument, but also the harp (not the type that the Marx brothers employed....but I'd be happy to be proven wrong), the piano, horns....they can be simple, complex, slick or raw. Welcome to episode 188 of Love That Album podcast. Over the last few years, I've welcomed Shane Pacey, leader of the Bondi Cigars and the Shane Pacey Trio to the show many times to talk about records in a variety of styles, but weirdly, we've never spoken about The Blues. I say “weirdly” because blues music is his main focus of recording and live performance. Finally, that is rectified with the latest episode. Shane and I picked 4 classic blues albums to ruminate on. They're all very different in their approach to performance and production, yet they all fit nicely under the blues umbrella. We look at: Willie Dixon - I Am The Blues Albert King – Born Under a Bad Sign Junior Wells – Hoodoo Man Blues Muddy Waters – Hard Again Of course, it wouldn't be an LTA episode if we didn't digress to other blues-related topics....and we're remaining consistent to that ethos. As always, it's a wonderful time in Shane's company. We discuss much, and I learn much. He's a music encyclopedia and a fun conversationalist. So, if you want to know who we believe Junior Wells influenced and was influenced by or what song by Albert King influenced Kiss (probably) or why Marshall Chess supposedly asked Buddy Guy to kick his arse....we have a great show for you. Shane's trio's most recent album is the superb Who Made You King? You can get a copy from https://shanepaceytriomusic.bandcamp.com/album/who-made-you-king. You can also look up what's happening in the world of The Bondi Cigars at https://bondicigars.com/ Oh, and I even received some feedback from listeners about THEIR favourite blues albums. Yay!!! If you’ve been enjoying the show, please consider giving us a favourable review on iTunes and let your friends know that our show exists. If you don't enjoy the show, tell your adversaries to tune in. We don't care who listens..... Love That Album is proudly part of the Pantheon Network of music podcasts.
