Only Three Lads: Top 5 Alt-Rock Inspired Hip-Hop Songs (with Lemoyne Alexander)
Hip-hop culture was a dominant force during the '80s and '90s, and inspired language, fashion, film, and music. Yes, that includes plenty of alternative music. But that's not what we're talking about today. Instead, we explore the inverse - how influential was alternative music in the world of hip hop? While perhaps not quite as pervasive, it did exist - whether it be through the use of sampling recognizable songs, a cross-pollination of styles and artists coming together, or perhaps just an overall attitude or spirit. Our Third Lad this week, Lemoyne Alexander, is a man who has bridged both the hip-hop and alternative worlds and then some. He played in family bands throughout the ‘70s & ‘80s including the Fascination, who had some dance club hits like 1986’s “Why Are You Always Complaining?” before settling in as a hip hop producer both solo and with the production team 3 Da Hard Way, working on records by the likes of Aalyiah, DMX, DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, and for labels like Jive and Motown. Lemoyne left the rap game to return to his earliest passions - the guitar and rock n’ roll, releasing Solitude in 2019 and Perfect World in 2023. 2024’s indie rock single “Insecurity” is an earworm that once you hear that infectious chorus, it’s going to take up residence in your head for all your days. With a new single "Claustrophobia" (which you will hear during this episode!) and LP Alone on the horizon, Lemoyne is poised to continue making his mark on alt rock. Oh, and on top of that, we've got a brand new O3L game for y'all: Off Da Chartz (aka Rap Draft), in which our contestants draft five albums that they believe will appear on Boombox's list of the Top 50 Alternative Rap Albums of all time. Plus, Uncle Gregg rants aplenty. Oh, the rants. Yo! Thanks to Laura Bissett from the MyWhy Agency for the introduction and coordination. Learn more about your ad choices. Set Lusting Bruce - Song Lyrics to Stories: Jay Armstrong's 'Follow Your Dreams Down'
In this episode of Set Lusting Bruce, host Jesse Jackson welcomes guest Jay Armstrong, a longtime friend and one of the podcast's earliest guests. Jay shares insights from his teaching experiences, where he used Bruce Springsteen's 'Thunder Road' as a poetic exercise for his students. The episode dives into the longstanding debate over whether Mary gets in the car and how perspectives on the song have evolved over time. Jay discusses his new book, 'Follow Your Dreams Down: Scenes from Small Towns, Jukebox Nights, and Roads That Give Second Chances,' which is a collection of short stories inspired by Springsteen's songs. The conversation also touches on Jay's experiences with his medical condition, the importance of resilience, and the challenges of writing fiction. Tune in for an engaging discussion about music, teaching, and the human experience, all through the lens of Bruce Springsteen's work. https://www.podtrac.com/pts/redirect.mp3/pdst.fm/e/traffic.megaphone.fm/PAN4570949113.mp3?updated=1764213605 00:00 Introduction and Special Guest Jay Armstrong 00:28 The Thunder Road Classroom Debate 03:10 Jay's New Book and Writing Journey 05:24 Exploring Themes in Bruce's Music 07:28 Jay's Fiction Writing Inspiration 10:56 Challenges of Writing Short Stories 18:16 Bruce Springsteen's Recent Works and Collaborations 23:41 Reflecting on Youth and Urgency 24:16 Anticipation for the Bruce Springsteen Movie 25:13 The Challenge of Being True to Oneself 26:47 The Fear of Rejection 28:12 Writing and Letting Go 29:37 Lessons from Living with a Condition 31:54 Memories and Stories of Loved Ones 33:08 The Absurdity of Love 36:10 Crafting a Book Like a Concert Setlist 40:45 Connecting with Readers 44:32 Final Thoughts and Farewell Learn more about your ad choices. Prisoners of Rock and Roll -- Bruce Springsteen & Electric Nebraska
EWe’re opening the vault on the single most mythical recording in Bruce Springsteen’s long career: Electric Nebraska. In January 1982: Bruce locked himself in a bedroom with a four-track and cut ten of the bleakest songs he’s ever written. A few months later, he took those songs into the studio with the E Street Band and tried them loud. They didn’t work. Bruce ultimately released the original demos, and Nebraska became one of the bleakest albums in the Springsteen catalogue. But what about those full band recordings. For forty years, fans have been debating: do the the tapes even exist? Were they destroyed? Are they better? Even members of the band disagreed on whether they existed. After decades of waiting, we finally have them. In October 2025, Bruce Springsteen dug into the vault and released Electric Nebraska as part of the Nebraska box set. It’s the ultimate “what if” in the Boss’s entire catalogue. Some of these electric takes absolutely rip, but some lose their special darkness as soon as that big E Street sound kicks in. So join us as we dive into the songs from the musical white whale, the electric ark of the covenant for Springsteen fans: Electric Nebraska. Imbalanced History: Redux, Take 5@45: The Night John Lennon Died
EWe can't tell the story any better than this annual repeat episode about one of our favorites, John Lennon! John meant the world, to most people, and definitely to both of us. His music, his message, and his fun way of spreading it, attracted so many to him. One wicked soul saw things differently than most. He took John's life on 12/8/1980... Forgiveness is a virtue, but forgive us for being less than virtuous in our disdain for that man. For us, the living, we have found ways to move forward for decades now. This episode, repeated this week, has helped some of those who still mourn. Markus and Ray had two very different evenings on December 8th, 1980. Hear their stories, and a Rock & Roll intersection on that date, and the mournful night after. Thank you, and here's our best wishes for a happy holiday season, whichever one(s) you celebrate. And If like us, you mark them ALL...let's party!!! Special thanks to producer Tony "Shoes" Maddox for his original production on the flashback part of this episode! Luke’s debut body of work merges country-rock, folk-pop, and Southern soul into songs that immediately transport the audience into a state of enchanted ease. Ugly American Werewolf in London: Yes Live in 2025
Yes has been around for more than 55 years. They've made some of the world's best progressive rock music and even had some success on the pop charts. While The Wolf was living in London, he got to see Yes at Royal Albert Hall on the Close to the Edge 50 Tour which was a special night. It was there that he truly came to appreciate the talents of Jon Davison, the lead singer who is very close in age to your hosts. A friend of the late Taylor Hawkins, he does justice to classic Yes songs from throughout the catalog. After that show, The Wolf wanted to make sure he never missed his heroes again as long as Davison was fronting the band. On October 27, the boys came to his town and not only did he attend but he brought The Wolfcub, an aspiring guitar player, to see Steve Howe do his thing live. And they both loved the show (and The Wolfcub was handed an official Steve Howe guitar string!). They performed classics throughout the catalog and then after an intermission played Fragile in it's entirety straight-through, including big hits like Roundabout and Long Distance Runaround. But fan favorites like South Side of the Sky and Heart of the Sunrise really got the diehards on their feet! Steve Howe had his time in the sun on Mood for a Day and Geoff Downes had his spotlight doing the Rick Wakeman penned Cans and Brahms. Billy Sherwood showed why Chris Squire chose him to carry on his legacy, especially on The Fish and Jay Schellen kept them all in time. For those who wouldn't go because not enough original or heyday members are still in the band, we understand your argument. But this version of Yes fronted by Jon Davison delivers solid shows doing classics you love and the big screen behind them featuring Roger Dean artwork coming to life makes for a killer night out with Yes. VINYL RELICS/May Blitz (1970): Britain’s Lost Power Trio
EPYSODE 64: "May Blitz" by May Blitz. Guest: May Blitz bassist Reid Hudson. Additional commentary by Uncle Herff. Fresh off our deep dive into As Sheriff’s lost 60's recordings, we follow the trail to London in 1970, where bassist Reid Hudson helped forge something far heavier. With guitarist Jamie Black and drummer Tony Newman, May Blitz delivered a self-titled debut that captured the raw, thunderous spirit of the era’s underground rock scene. We spin through the album’s molten riffs, jazz-inflected rhythms, and acid-soaked atmosphere, an explosive mix that put the band in the same league as Black Sabbath and Atomic Rooster.Half power trio, half psychedelic séance, this album remains a cult cornerstone of the heavy progressive movement. First Concert Memories #29: Bay City Rollers with Holly Cantos of What Difference Does it Make?
The Wolf and Action Jackson were too young and too straight to get into 70s heartthrobs The Bay City Rollers. The Scottish boys were plastered all over every teen magazine throughout the 70s to the delight of screaming pre-teen girls all over the world. One of those fans was Holly Cantos, the co-host of What Difference Does It Make? Podcast where they talk about the amazing music of the 1980s and host guests from the industry. But twice in 1977 (or at least we think that was the right year), a young Holly got to go see her heroes live and in the flesh thanks to her friend Laura's mom working for a promoter. Holly takes us back to a pre-internet, pre-social media world where the fanzines were the only place to see their crushes other than the album covers. She regales us with stories of dressing in tartan and covering her walls with pics of her faves while living in the San Fernando Valley. But there's always a twist on First Concert Memories, the monthly sidecast from your friends at The Ugly American Werewolf in London Rock Podcast, and Holly delivers. Because not everyone can handle all the screaming and pushing in the front row so her experience was cut short and she does name names on the show! What an experience for a 12 year old to see her heroes in the front row in 1977!! Only Three Lads: Split Enz - Tim Finn & Eddie Rayner on ENZyclopedia
Stranger than fiction, larger than life...we are elated to welcome Split Enz singer/songwriter/pianist Tim Finn and keyboardist Eddie Rayner to O3L! This is gonna be a hard act to follow. Formed in 1972 in Auckland, New Zealand, Split Enz, known initially as Split Ends, were, and remain, utterly unique. As the first band from New Zealand to achieve major success beyond the Southern Hemisphere, they blazed a trail with a sound and style entirely their own. Evolving from folk-inspired beginnings into a fusion of art-rock, new wave, and theatrical performance, Split Enz didn’t just follow trends, they genuinely created them. While no one sounded like Split Enz at the time, countless acts have drawn inspiration from their legacy over the past five decades. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of their groundbreaking debut, Mental Notes, the first installment of a landmark archival project, ENZyclopedia Volumes One & Two, presents a comprehensive tribute to New Zealand’s most visionary and influential band. ENZyclopedia Volumes One & Two is housed in a deluxe 5-CD box set (also available as a 3-LP + Blu-Ray edition), this release has been curated in close collaboration with the band. It offers an in-depth look at their formative years, showcasing the evolution of a group whose creative spirit reshaped the boundaries of popular music from New Zealand. The CD set features remasters of their first two albums, Mental Notes (1975) and Second Thoughts (1976), a remix of Second Thoughts, a partially remixed, remastered version of the early tracks comp The Beginning of the Enz, and a disc of live tracks, rough tracks, and alternate mixes. ENZyclopedia Volumes 1 & 2 is out now on Chrysalis Records. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ugly American Werewolf in London: The Beatles - Rubber Soul
The Wolf & Action Jackson will admit they aren't the world's biggest Beatles fans. Though we appreciate their influence to help create the music we love through generations, we generally don't gravitate towards their albums. However, in researching Rubber Soul as it turns 60 on December 3, we gained new appreciation and respect for the Lads from Liverpool. They had grown up quite a bit in the last few years and found themselves writing more mature lyrics while experimenting with different sounds. The Beatles had met and befriended Bob Dylan and in their second trip to the US had met Elvis and formed mutual admiration societies with The Byrds, Motown and Stax. They experimented with LSD and the boys used to call Rubber Soul the pot album as they partook during the recording. So as they wove all those influencers into their own music, they also started to write more personal songs. Paul exchanged sweet nothings for standoffish goodbyes in songs like You Won't See Me and I'm Looking Through You. A contemplative John Lennon reminisces about growing up (In My Life) and the eternal search for that special someone (Girl). Young George Harrison was ready to step up to the plate with his own mature offerings like Think For Yourself and If I Needed Someone. The album was well received by peers and critics and is considered the point where the album became more than just a larger collection of songs but one statement from a moment in time. Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown) was an international hit about an affair John had. Michelle seems like a sweet ode to a French girl when it was the boys making fun of Paul for trying to speak French at parties to meet girls. Even the big hit Drive My Car is very tongue in cheek about the silliness and pitfalls of fame. Though the oldest of them were 25, The Beatles proved they were more than just cute mop tops with guitars. They were artists pushing the envelope in the studio of what rock music could be. Rubber Soul was that next step in the evolution of the band and rock. Episode 29: Whatever Gets You to the Light
ESynopsis Rock N Roll Archaeology excavates the divergent paths of Elton John and John Lennon in the first half of the 1970s, a period where one man sprinted toward the brightest spotlight on Earth while the other desperately sought an escape. From Elton's star-making coronation at the Troubadour to Lennon's chaotic "Lost Weekend" in Los Angeles, their journeys collide in a New York studio with a high-stakes wager over the song "Whatever Gets You Thru the Night." This is a story of two friends, two paths, and the unforeseen consequences of getting exactly what you wish for, set against the backdrop of the post-Beatles power vacuum and the dizzying heights of 70s superstardom. VINYL RELICS/Six Ways To The Ace: Unearthing As Sheriff’s West Coast Sound
EPYSODE 63: "Six Ways To The Ace" by As Sheriff. Guests: As Sheriff band members Reid Hudson and Andy Godon, Supreme Echo record label owner Jason Flower. Additional commentary by Uncle Herff. This week we dig deep into the hazy archives of Canada’s late-60s underground with "Six Ways to the Ace", a new release from Supreme Echo featuring the long-lost recordings of As Sheriff. Emerging from the Victoria/Vancouver scene, As Sheriff blended shimmering folk harmonies with a psychedelic edge, a sound as coastal as it was cosmic. We explore how these reels of tape survived half a century, what they reveal about a vibrant yet overlooked West Coast music scene, and how bassist Reid Hudson’s journey from local gigs to May Blitz links this forgotten band to the heavier chapters of rock history. This album is a revelation...and a resurrection. Ep 132See Hear Podcast Episode 132 - Nashville
Backstabbing, faux-sincerity, clawing one's way to the top, class division, those at the top thumbing their noses at those further down the ladder....all political concepts, right? Actually, all of this is in reference to the 1975 Robert Altman film “Nashville” about the country music scene....which in itself serves as a political allegory. Welcome to episode 132 of See Hear. In the early seventies, Robert Altman was becoming known as a director of ensemble pieces without the usual approach to narrative. He could be seen as being part of the New Hollywood that emerged in the late 60s, but truth is, he was a film maker unto himself....as different from everything else that was going on as other directors that emerged in this period were to what came before. He already had some hugely important films like M*A*S*H and The Long Goodbye, but to many, Nashville is considered his masterpiece. It featured multiple storylines surrounding musicians, hangers on, lovers, and political strategists. The film takes place over 5 days leading up to a concert supporting a presidential candidate. In between, we musical performances that reflect the political era – some in bars, some in the Grand Ol' Opry, some in hotel rooms. The film shows many of these people in a poor light – some are greedy, some are deluded, all are desperate. Many of the songs in this film were composed by the actors, leaving the Nashville music fraternity annoyed that they weren't consulted, and that these pesky Northerner actors thought they could understand what country music was about. Altman must have been forgiven as his final film many years later was A Prairie Home Companion (a very early See Hear podcast focus). Tim is taking a few shows off, so wasn't available, but Kerry and I were thrilled to be joined by co-host of the Stinking Pause Podcast (and occasionally Reel Britannia) Charlie Mahoney. He's a confessed Altman fan and brought some wonderful conversation and insight. We look forward to welcoming him back to future shows. Anything is possible as we welcome power pop icon Chris Stamey from the dB's as our Third Lad! Our focus topic is on the producers of the O3L era - the sonic architects that carry out the visions of the artists we love and shape the sound of our favorite records. And Chris Stamey is someone who knows, as he's produced some fantastic records over the years, including albums by Pylon, Whiskeytown, Le Tigre, The Butchies, Alejandro Escovedo, and many more.
