Ep 116Allie Bailey

E

This week i am joined on One For The Road by Allie Bailey who is an ultrarunner, coach, speaker and podcaster who has run in some of the most extreme places in the world. In 2024 she released her first book “There is No Wall”, a brutally honest, sometimes shocking account of alcoholism, depression and severe mental breakdowns that almost cost her her life. She would like it to be known that despite this doom worthy introduction, she is “super good fun.” Allie tends to swear quite a lot. Allie was the first woman to run 100 miles across frozen Lake Khövsgöl in Mongolia and to run the full length of the Panama Canal. She has crossed the inhospitable Namib Desert three times, run the length of the Outer Hebrides and completed a 1,000-mile off-road version of the classic Land’s End to John o’Groats route in just thirty days. Allie has finished over 200 marathons and ultramarathons all over the world, but the most remarkable thing about all of these achievements is that she accomplished most of them while battling depression and alcoholism. Although running ultimately became the vehicle that helped buy Allie the time to recover from a number of severe mental health breakdowns, it did not save her. In fact, there were times when it made her battle all the more difficult. After a seismic mental health crisis in 2021, Allie finally admitted to herself and those around her that she was an alcoholic and started her recovery. She left behind a dream career with major record labels and adventure companies and now works as a coach with a broad range of runners and endurance athletes, helping them unlock their full potential. Instagram: @ab_runsWebsite: www.alliebailey.co.ukBook links: Publisher: https://www.adventurebooks.com/products/there-is-no-wall-allie-Tour: https://www.speakersfromtheedge.com/theatre-tours/2024/allie-bailey-rwsyThis weeks episode is sponsored by https://www.ethicalcontent.co.uk/If you want to connect with me via Instagram, you can find me on the instahandle @Soberdave https://www.instagram.com/soberdave/or via my website https://davidwilsoncoaching.com/Provided below are links for services offering additional help and advice.www.drinkaware.co.uk/advice/alcohol-support-serviceshttps://nacoa.org.uk/Show producer- Daniella Attanasio-MartinezInstagram - @TheDaniellaMartinezhttps://www.instagram.com/thedaniellamartinez/www.instagram.com/grownuphustle Hosted on Acast. Ep 114Lucy Bruce

E

On today’s episode on One For The Road I have to issue a trigger warning as there are discussions around child abuse and suicide. My guest on todays show today is Lucy Bruce. Lucy lives in Glasgow with her two daughters and has now been sober for 18 years. Her childhood was impacted by alcohol, violence & sexual abuse and she self-medicated with alcohol throughout her teens and early twenties until suicidal thoughts and panic attacks made her seek help to get sober. Despite removing alcohol Lucy struggled with unresolved childhood trauma & suffered from obtrusive thoughts surrounding her pregnancies until years later when she experienced MDMA Therapy and has never looked back. Lucy is a single parent, has weathered divorce, co-dependent relationships and loss but still lives a life free from alcohol. She is passionate about her children and work as an Alcohol-free coach and wants to share her story with women who may be going through similar experiences to help get rid of the stigma around the issues. www.lucybrucelifecoach.com https://www.instagram.com/lucybrucelifecoach/If you want to connect with me via Instagram, you can find me on the instahandle @Soberdave https://www.instagram.com/soberdave/or via my website https://davidwilsoncoaching.com/Provided below are links for services offering additional help and advice.www.drinkaware.co.uk/advice/alcohol-support-serviceshttps://nacoa.org.uk/Show producer- Daniella Attanasio-MartinezInstagram - @TheDaniellaMartinezhttps://www.instagram.com/thedaniellamartinez/www.instagram.com/grownuphustle Hosted on Acast. Ep 113The Gavin Sisters

E

Welcome back to One For The Road. This week i am joined by Sharon and Lauretta, an acclaimed comedy double act who have appeared in numerous TV and stage productions, developed sitcoms with comedy giants, and written plays for the West End. Sharon and Lauretta went from red wine-drinking Chinese take-out aficionados to thriving advocates of a plant-based lifestyle. Sharon's diagnosis of a rare autoimmune disease was a turning point that led them down a path of resilience, determination, and ultimately, transformation. Sharon was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease just before her son was born over 9 years ago. She was covered from head to toe in a chronic rash, and at times was wheelchair-bound. On a concoction of very toxic drugs and steroids, she decided she needed to find another way to get better. Her sister was determined to do everything she could to help Sharon. Her husband left her at six months pregnant, and she was now looking after Sharon, her daughter, and Sharon's son. As two single Mums living together with very young children, they decided they wanted to do everything to get Sharon's health back. After extensive research and a lot of trial and error, together they transitioned into a plant-based diet with lots of nutrient-dense foods, gave up alcohol and processed foods. Lauretta retrained as a natural vegan chef concentrating on nutrition. Sharon is now off all drugs, feels better than ever, and is back running. They decided they wanted to inspire others and in 2018 set up a wellness retreat, The Detox Barn followed by launching their first product, Funki Coffee, and their hugely successful podcast - The Gavin Sisters Wellness Show.www.gavinsisters.co.ukInsta: @gavinsistersukTIKTOK:@gavinsistersFacebook: @TheDetoxBarnYou Tube: @gavingavinIf you want to connect with me via Instagram, you can find me on the instahandle @Soberdave https://www.instagram.com/soberdave/or via my website https://davidwilsoncoaching.com/Provided below are links for services offering additional help and advice.www.drinkaware.co.uk/advice/alcohol-support-serviceshttps://nacoa.org.uk/Show producer- Daniella Attanasio-MartinezInstagram - @TheDaniellaMartinezhttps://www.instagram.com/thedaniellamartinez/www.instagram.com/grownuphustle/ Hosted on Acast. Ep 112Matt Busbridge

E

Thanks for tuning into this weeks epsiode of One For `The Road. This week i am joined by Matt Busbridge. Matt started drinking when he was 17 - it was something that wasn’t really of interest to him before that and he began mainly going to clubs etc and drinking maybe once a week . Drink gave him the confidence and a whole new lease of life at that age. He struggled , and still does, with confidence . He reckons it all stems from where he used to be quite a big lad and that hasn’t really left him since . Matt then started taking drugs around the age of 22 - the drug of choice was cocaine . He dabbled with others - mdma / ecstasy / ketamine and he took drugs all the way up to his 30s … it was pretty much a weekly occurrence with him; with these actions he self sabotaged relationships, but alsonused it as a form of self medicating . When living in London Matt was drinking and using around 3 days a week and he used to also do something called ‘Monday club’ where it was a case of just getting messed up after work .  Matt went through Mega lows; chromic depression and anger towards people who wanted to help whuch was very selfish Matt went sober last January, he didn’t attend AA - he mainly just listened to podcasts . Matt is doing really well now and hopes that by sharing his story it will help others to look at their relationship with drugs and alcohol.https://www.instagram.com/highsobrietypodcast_?igsh=bGs0NDUzbDc0c3Zr&utm_source=qrhttps://anchor.fm/highsobrietypodcasthttps://youtu.be/CfAyZfbdWBs?si=-3i2kcCamFK-2cSbIf you want to connect with me via Instagram, you can find me on the instahandle @Soberdave https://www.instagram.com/soberdave/or via my website https://davidwilsoncoaching.com/Provided below are links for services offering additional help and advice.www.drinkaware.co.uk/advice/alcohol-support-serviceshttps://nacoa.org.uk/Show producer- Daniella Attanasio-MartinezInstagram - @TheDaniellaMartinezhttps://www.instagram.com/thedaniellamartinez/www.instagram.com/grownuphustle/ Hosted on Acast. Ep 98Jimmy Weir

E

Thanks for joining me for this week's episode of One For The Road. This week I am joined by Jimmy Weir as he shares his story with us.Alcohol was everything to him – his best friend, his saviour, the thing he turned to and would ultimately favour over everything and everyone. It all eventually came to a head February 2020 when he was living with his girlfriend and her two children. When he was sober, life was great and they were one amazingly weird little family. He had moments of sobriety but each time he slipped it seemed to get worse than the cycle that went before. He honestly wanted to help himself or let people help him but all the while, he could feel it slipping away from him and each time he picked up, it spiralled. He checked into a rehab in Blackpool, his family helped him get there. He is very lucky to have their support in his life and he knows there are people out there who have none. In Blackpool he learned many tools to combat craving's and avoid picking up that first drink. He now lives on the Isle of Man close to his family and he has his own gardening business. He can finally say that he has turned a corner and has been touched by a miracle or higher power, but whatever it is he is proud to say that he is in recovery, that he is a recovering alcoholic. Saying that out loud is something he never thought he would say but he is proud to say it now. Ep 87Louisa Evans

E

Thanks for joining me for this week's episode of One For The Road. I am going to be taking a Summer break for the next couple of weeks but I will be back in August with more brilliant shows and guests. On this week's show, I am joined by Louisa Evans. As a therapist and hypnotherapist, Louisa was no stranger to helping others quit unwanted habits but when it came to her own relationship with alcohol, she struggled. After spending more than a decade attempting moderation, she finally declared that enough was enough and embarked on a sober life, and that’s when the fun started. She found herself in a resetting loop with far too many "day ones" before making the necessary mindset shifts that changed everything. Even with all the tools at her disposal, she realized she was self-sabotaging. Fast forward to today, and she is delighted to have booted alcohol out of her life having created a sober identity that is far more appealing than her old drinking one. Louisa is now on a mission to spread the message far and wide that you don’t need to hit any sort of rock bottom to walk away from alcohol and that if you struggle at the start it doesn’t mean you won’t succeed eventually. It’s all about mindset. She’s now written a book which is also available as an audiobook, Becoming a Sober Rebel, on the subject of early sobriety and mindset where she talks about her experiences with going sober and shares tools that she uses in therapy when it comes to habit breaking. If you want to connect with me via Instagram, you can find me on the instahandle @Soberdave https://www.instagram.com/soberdave/or via my website https://davidwilsoncoaching.com/Provided below are links for services offering additional help and advice for Louisa.       Training | Sober Dave davidwilsoncoaching.com      Online courseLouisa Evans (@stepping_into_sobriety) • Instagram photos and videoswww.drinkaware.co.uk/advice/alcohol-support-serviceshttps://nacoa.org.uk/Show producer- Daniella Attanasio-MartinezInstagram - @TheDaniellaMartinezhttps://www.instagram.com/thedaniellamartinez/www.instagram.com/grownuphustle/ Hosted on Acast. Ep 82Dr Rebecca Lewis

Thanks for tuning into this week's episode of One For The Road. This week I am joined by doctor and menopause specialist Rebecca Lewis, as we discuss the links between alcohol consumption and the exacerbation of the symptoms of menopause. Rebecca qualified from Guy’s Medical School and initially pursued a career in Anaesthetics gaining FRCA in 1996. She then changed specialty to General Practice (MRCGP 2000) having been interested in women’s health and gained DRCOG in 1998. During her time in General Practice, she became interested in menopause and by how dramatically it could affect individuals. She found this the most rewarding area of medicine to be involved in as once a woman is correctly diagnosed and treated with the right type and dose of HRT their life can be transformed and needless suffering stopped. As a result, she is now passionate about improving education and knowledge about menopause, not only within medicine but in the workplace and society as a whole. Her aim is to make menopause a positive experience not hampered by symptoms so that women can be allowed to get on and enjoy healthy, active lives for many years ahead. If you want to connect with me via Instagram, you can find me on the instahandle @Soberdave https://www.instagram.com/soberdave/ or via my website https://davidwilsoncoaching.com/Provided below are links for services offering additional help and advice for Dr. Rebecca.https://www.linkedin.com/in/rebecca-lewis-812784204https://instagram.com/dr.rebecca.lewis?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==https://www.balance-menopause.com/https://www.balance-menopause.com/balance-app/www.drinkaware.co.uk/advice/alcohol-support-serviceshttps://nacoa.org.uk/Show producer- Daniella Attanasio-MartinezInstagram - @TheDaniellaMartinezhttps://www.instagram.com/thedaniellamartinez/www.instagram.com/grownuphustle/ Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 78Helen Bennett

Welcome back to One For The Road. This week I am joined by Helen Bennett. If you'd met Helen 10 years ago you would likely have never guessed that she was fighting a two-decade-long battle with bulimia. While she looked like a trim, confident, and successful small business owner on the outside, she was in fact silently trapped inside a daily vicious cycle of losing control of food and then doing whatever it took to get rid of the excess that she'd consumed. Nothing that she'd tried - no diet, no meal plan, no willpower, no therapy - had the power to help her stop. Fortunately, when her business closed in 2015, she made the decision to focus on her recovery again - but this time more intelligently - which meant doing things totally differently than how she'd been doing them before. And slowly, with many bumps along the way, she began to create a truly nourishing and carefree relationship with food. Now, Helen is the founder of BulimiaFreedom.com, and works with people all over the world to help them break free of the nightmare that is disordered eating ... and cultivate a deep sense of their own worth and lovability along the way. In this week's episode, we discuss the links between addiction, alcohol, and food.If you want to connect with me via Instagram, you can find me on the instahandle @Soberdave https://www.instagram.com/soberdave/or via my website https://davidwilsoncoaching.com/Provided below are links for services offering additional help and advice for Helen.http://bulimiafreedom.comhttps://www.instagram.com/bulimiafreedom/www.drinkaware.co.uk/advice/alcohol-support-serviceshttps://nacoa.org.uk/Show producer- Daniella Attanasio-MartinezInstagram - @TheDaniellaMartinezhttps://www.instagram.com/thedaniellamartinez/www.instagram.com/grownuphustle/ Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 73Ceri Walker

Thanks for joining me for this week's episode of One For The Road. This week I am joined by Ceri Walker as we discuss what it is like as the child of an alcoholic. Six years ago, Ceri found the support group Nacoa after she made a film about her Mum's addiction for the Recovery Street Film festival. Finding them has been life-changing for her, as finally she understood that being a COA is a thing, and she felt that she could be herself, with all of her broken bits. She became a media volunteer, doing radio, newspaper, and tv interviews, in the hope of helping others feel less alone. This year Ceri had the huge privilege of speaking at the David Stafford Memorial lecture at the House of Commons. Helping support Nacoa and being the voice of children of alcoholics has become Ceri's purpose, and she really feels she's found who she is meant to be.
