Imagine your home suddenly transformed into a Hollywood icon. That's precisely what happened to John Abendshien, whose real-life house became the star of "Home Alone." More than just a film set, it turned into a character of its own, filled with traps and slapstick chaos that helped make the movie a global hit. Decades later, the house remains legendary. Tourists visit, merchandise abounds—even gingerbread replicas exist. In his new book, "Home But Alone No More," Abendshien shares the fascinating behind-the-scenes story: how the location was chosen, what filming was like, and the surreal experience of having a blockbuster take over his home—and life. Filming lasted five months in 1990, but the impact never ended. What followed was a mix of magic and madness, as the family's home became a permanent tourist attraction. Blending humor and heartfelt reflection, Abendshien draws parallels between himself and young Kevin McCallister, noting the film's deeper themes of family, independence, and resilience. Over time, the house stopped being just his—it became everyone's house. And as he says, when you're part of something this beloved, you're never really home alone. John Abendshien has over 45 years of experience providing consulting services to healthcare organizations in enterprise strategy, clinical services development, organizational design, and mergers and acquisitions. He has played a key role in the planning and development of some of the country's leading healthcare systems and has conducted 400+ consulting engagements across the United States with a broad range of organizations. This episode will help you start to understand how to embrace your emotional ghosts and transform them into catalysts for healing and growth. Her third appearance with Randall Kenneth Jones, B. A. Crisp is a strategist at Crisp Concepts, Inc., in Herndon, VA. Her professional portfolio ranges from psychiatric assessment specialist to adviser with the Department of Homeland Security's Science & Technology Directorate, where she collaborated on anti-human trafficking research. She also lent her expertise to Homeland Security Investigations on Illicit Finance Crimes and Gangs. In 2015, she was nominated for the Homeland Security Director's Service Award, meeting mandates of both the White House and Congress in the battle against human trafficking. As if that weren't enough, Crisp is a bestselling author too. She wrote The Quanta Chronicles trilogy, a psychological thriller, along with three non-fiction titles: "Loosen Your Lotus," "How to Hug a Ghost," and "A Cosmic Conspiracy"—the latter named a 2025 top new release in Science Essays and Commentary on Amazon. Academically, Crisp earned her B.A. in psychology from Ursuline College, graduating Summa cum Laude. She went on to earn her M.S. from George Washington University's Graduate School of Political Management, finishing as valedictorian. Her studies also took her across the Atlantic to Exeter College, University of Oxford, and the London School of Journalism. She's never met a library she didn't like but she can't say the same about a few people. Moreover, she enjoys covert misadventures, which, she assures, are mostly in her mind. She requests that both the CIA and the NSA not take her internet research history too seriously. Similarly, Crisp writes like Albert Einstein moonlighting as a mystic—equal parts quantum mechanics, consciousness, and chaos theory, with just enough caffeine to bend spacetime. And if Sigmund Freud, Nikola Tesla, and Forrest Gump ever had a love child, her name would probably be B.A. Crisp." • B.A. and discuss their comparsions with Forrest Gump. • B.A. explains that her definition of a ghost, which can be good or bad, but for today's purpose, ghosts are things that haunt you. The majority of the discussion explores how you can embrace their existence and use them as a launchpad for a better life. As B.A. whimsically said, these ghosts are "like gas…they pass." • B.A. describes a stunning example of kindness at a Tim Tebow event. • B.A. explains interdependence. Best Quotes (from the book and the podcast episode): • B.A. Crisp: "Put simply, the supernatural is science we don't yet understand." • B.A. Crisp: "Deep-diving into nothingness can be a valuable approach in certain situations." • B.A. Crisp: "Normal doesn't exist. Conformity is rampant. Authenticity is exceptional." • B.A. Crisp: "What a miracle it is to be born! Think of all the events that had to conspire to bring you here, and the infinitesimally small probability that the exact you in this Now, on this timeline, on this planet, exists." • B.A. Crisp: "I have always been cautious of individuals who claim to be "experts" in any field, as it implies that they have reached the pinnacle of knowledge and have nothing more to learn." • B.A. Crisp: "Just be." • B.A. Crisp: "Nothing will get in your way faster than your own ego." • B.A. Crisp: "Every single one of us has a superpower but we allow fear to hold us back. Ep 208208: David M. Lubin KNOWS Art, Film, Subtext, Motivation, Education, Human Nature & Sunset Boulevard

This episode will help you understand how art—specifically cinema—can grow in importance over time, and our ongoing exploration of art continues to shed valuable light on the human condition. #ArtIsLife Today, more than 70 years after it premiered, "Sunset Boulevard" remains the finest ever movie made about the pathology of fame: those who lose it, those who abuse it, and those who never attain it at all. Great films are born of great collaborations, and "Sunset Boulevard" represents one of the most extraordinary confluences of cinematic talent in film history. Still, its production was surprisingly fraught, filled with unexpected twists. Why was William Holden, who had never caught fire as a leading man, hired to play Joe Gillis after the fastest-rising star in the business dropped out at the last minute? After Mae West and Mary Pickford turned down the now iconic role of Norma Desmond, how did Billy Wilder convince Gloria Swanson, who had long been absent from Hollywood at this point, to leave her low-paying job as a TV talk show host to join the cast? From the writers' room during Billy Wilder and Charles Brackett's final collaboration to the moment when the film won three Academy Awards, scholar and former Rolling Stone staffer David M. Lubin takes readers on a fascinating journey through film history that proves, once and for all, why "Sunset Boulevard" is one of the most iconic films in cinematic history. By exploring the history of "Sunset Boulevard" in time for the movie's 75th anniversary, from its inception to its making its present-day legacy, READY FOR MY CLOSEUP breathes life into a beloved masterpiece of American cinema, not only marking its influential place in film history, but also proving how prescient it really was in terms of the human costs of relentless technological change and our obsessive quest for fame, youth, and immortality. As an undergraduate, David M. Lubin studied filmmaking at the USC School of Cinema while reviewing music for Rolling Stone. He earned his Ph.D. in American Studies from Yale. Among his seven books is an in-depth study of the blockbuster film Titanic. A professor at Wake Forest University, he has been a visiting professor at Oxford and lectured throughout the United States, Europe, China, and Australia. His Shooting Kennedy: JFK and the Culture of Images won the Smithsonian Institution's Charles C. Eldredge Prize for "distinguished scholarship in American art." Lubin is a Guggenheim Fellow and an NEH Public Scholar. Podcast Highlights: • Randy explains that his favorite thing to do on the podcast is to challenge himself by reading a book and "putting himself on trial" by interviewing its author • David explains how his young students at Wake Forest University actually inspired him to choose "Sunset Boulevard" as a topic for his book. As his students were embarking on their own careers, the "Joe Gillis" character—and his challenges—resonated with them. • David and Randy discuss additional reasons that "Sunset Boulevard" holds up so well. For one, it's the first Hollywood film that explores the "sickness" of fame. The film serves as an indictment of Hollywood's view of aging, which essentially has not changed. • David explains how female students are influenced by the same pressure Norma Desmond feels about her appearance and the importance of looking their best. • David and Randy discuss the concept "reel life" vs. "real life"—1950 vs. today, including the concepts of "reality television" and "being famous for being famous." • David and Randy discuss "Sunset Boulevard" as an exploration of exploitation on a grand scale. • David and Randy discuss Billy Wilder and the character of "Joe Gillis" are both gigolos. • David and Randy discuss how "Sunset Boulevard" explores writers, the writing process, and the exploitation of writers, noting that every character is "writing" something. • David and Randy discuss their concerns over AI's potential impact on true human emotion, education, and thought. Best Quotes (from the book and the podcast episode): • David M. Lubin, READY FOR MY CLOSEUP: "A movie about has-beens and also-rans, about failed comebacks, misguided dreams, and murderous delusions, Sunset Boulevard was made by a raft of exceptionally creative individuals, all at critical/junctures in their careers, several of them playing roles that seemed drawn from their actual lives." • David M. Lubin, READY FOR MY CLOSEUP: "Comedy, crime film, horror story, Hollywood exposé, romantic melodrama, and psychological thriller, "Sunset Boulevard" is above all an unsentimental examination of our innate unwillingness to accept the inevitability of decline, decay, and death." • Randall Kenneth Jones: "I don't see those of us who are beyond our youth doing much to support each other. We have so much power. We have so much knowledge. We have so much to give—and so much to learn—yet we don't do enough to elevate each other." • David M. Lubin: "A lot of people think intellectualit

She also worked at the Office of White House Counsel, the Civil Rights Division in the United States Department of Justice and the private law firms Irell & Manella, O'Melveny & Myers and Williams & Connolly. At Williams & Connolly, she assisted President Clinton's personal lawyers with press interviews, worked on the preparation of Congressional testimony for pending product liability legislation and researched First Amendment issues. After graduating from Yale, Acker served as a judicial law clerk to the Honorable Dorothy Wright Nelson on the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. After her clerkship, the Office of the Solicitor General in the U.S. Department of Justice awarded Acker a Bristow Fellowship. While working as a Bristow Fellow, Acker drafted Supreme Court briefs and helped prepare the Solicitor General for oral argument before the High Court. Among the cases on which Acker worked was Clinton v Jones, where she assisted both the Solicitor General and President Clinton's personal attorneys in preparing for oral argument. In private practice, Acker's legal work spanned a broad variety of matters, from civil litigation involving public and private entities, to various constitutional cases, to providing constitutional cases, to the provision of business counseling and advice. She also maintained a commitment to pro bono work, receiving the ACLU's First Amendment Award for her successful representation of a group of homeless individuals against the City of Santa Barbara. Acker later worked in entertainment industry outreach for the Kerry/Edwards presidential campaign and as Deputy Campaign Manager for the Los Angeles mayoral campaign of City Councilman Bernard C. Parks. After that, she worked as the General Counsel of a company that manufactured emissions control products. From Jen Golbeck, the "internet's dog mom" behind the massive social media platform The Golden Ratio, and award-winning science writer Stacey Colino, comes THE PUREST BOND: Understanding the Human-Canine Connection. This science-based, comprehensive exploration of the profound bond between humans and dogs is perfect for fans of Our Dogs, Ourselves and What the Dog Knows. Dogs have been considered people's best friend for thousands of years, but never has the relationship between humans and their canine companions been as vitally important as it is today. With all of the seismic shifts in today's world, rates of anxiety and depression have been skyrocketing, and people have been turning to their dogs for solace and stability. Amidst these dire realities, something wonderful has taken shape. In the United States alone, dog adoptions doubled during the COVID-19 pandemic. As people have brought furry friends into their lives for the first time or seized this opportunity to deepen the connections they already have, they are looking to understand how owning a dog can change their lives. The Purest Bond explores the benefits our dogs can have on our physical, emotional, cognitive, and social well-being, often without our realizing it. Weaving together groundbreaking research and touching real-life stories, THE PUREST BOND explores not just the social benefits of owning a dog but the science of how dogs improve our emotional and physical health, mental acuity, and our ability to focus and absorb information. Most importantly, they remind us of what's right in the world—love, trust, affection, playtime, fresh air, and sunshine—even when so much feels wrong. S6 Ep 186186: Bargain Mansion's Tamara Day is the Ultimate Designing Woman

Designer Tamara Day is a purveyor of the glam and cozy. This busy wife and mother of four styles for the spirited home, mixing glam, comfort, and family. Tamara's sense of style and eye for what works has created an insatiable demand for her interior design expertise, furniture and décor. Tamara grew up on the Midwestern plains in Salina, Kansas. Her "do-it-yourself" skill set comes from growing up on a farm. Growing up, she learned all of her hands-on skills from her dad, Ward Schraeder. After getting married, Tamara and her husband took on old, dilapidated homes that no one wanted and turned them into beautiful spaces. One home in particular made Tamara the sought after designer she is today. While rescuing a home from foreclosure and neglect, the economy tanked, forcing Tamara to do a lot of the work herself. To stay on budget, she went to estate sales and redesigned furniture to fit her vision for the house. Out of this experience, a new brand was born— Growing Days, Tamara's interior design, furniture, décor and lifestyle business. On Magnolia Network's Bargain Mansions, Tamara and her crew transform big, old houses that she finds at bargain prices. While respecting the integrity and history of the homes, she integrates modern design, function, and style to the space – perfect for today's families. Fans of Tamara's signature style and the show can buy her specially curated finds for their own homes. Our special guest host this week is John Rhein from Peak Nine Design. S5 Ep 182182: Randy is Thought Full with Special Guest Karen Anglin

Actress, entrepreneur, breast cancer survivor, and proverbially patient headmaster Karen Anglin is one of Randy's most precious assets. A gifted hair stylist, she is responsible for the ongoing management of Randy's ever-eroding hairline. Karen thoughtfully holds his hand as his "pepper" follicles rescind, leaving only a mass of "salt" tresses atop his overblown, old-man head. Karen began crafting and creating handmade bath and body products over 20 years ago with botanical ingredients. In 2011, she branched into a botanically based hair care product line after having difficulty finding the right product for her own erratic hair. Enter Vivefai, which means "to bring life." Karen has combined her experience and training in horticulture and hair to create a hydrating, healing, humidity-controlling line—and internationally available. Paul Nicklen has documented the beauty and plight of our planet for more than twenty years. His work is collected by Hollywood icons, rock stars and royalty. In 2019, he became the youngest person inducted into the International Photography Hall of Fame. He has said it is one thing to capture the natural world in a moment of grace and dignity, but that pales in comparison to an image that shines a brighter light on the environmental crisis and drives everyday people to action, even if only in some small way. His work has been singled out for creating a unique connection between image and viewer by featuring wild subjects in some of the most extreme conditions known on Earth. He is a Sony Artisan of Imagery and aligns with Rolex's Perpetual Planet initiative on collaborative efforts to preserve the natural world. Nicklen has won more than thirty of the field's most prestigious awards, including the BBC's Wildlife Photographer of the Year, and the World Press Photo for Photojournalism. He has exhibited in galleries, museums and institutions around the world, including Hilton Asmus Contemporary (Chicago), Lyons Gallery (Australia), Galerie Gadcollection (Paris), Eisele Gallery (Cincinnati) and Fineart Oslo (Oslo). Cristina Mittermeier was born in Mexico City in 1966. She graduated from the ITESM University in Mexico with a degree in Biochemical Engineering in Marine Sciences. She later attended the Fine Art Photography program at the Corcoran College for the Arts in Washington, D.C. She was named one of National Geographic's Adventurers of the Year in 2018. Her Photographs have been exhibited in galleries around the World, including Hilton Asmus (Chicago), the Saatchi Gallery (London), C. Parker Gallery (Greenwich), and Eisele Gallery (Cincinnati). She is currently preparing for a solo exhibition at the prestigious Gallerie d'Italia in Turino, Italy. Mittermeier's many awards include the Smithsonian Conservation Photographer of the Year; the Humanity Content Creator Award from HIPA; the Imaging Award for Photographers Who Give Back; the Seattle Aquarium's Sylvia Earle Medal; Travel + Leisure's Global Vision Award, and was named one of the "100 Latinos Most Committed to Climate Action." S5 Ep 177177: Randy is SIRIous with Special Guest Susan Bennett, the Original Voice of Siri

Basically, Susan Bennett is a musician! The voice work, speaking, acting and SIRI came later. She was playing the piano by ear by the age of 4, took classical piano lessons for many years, and ended up singing in her first band, "Conglomerate" during her years at Brown University. Susan went on to sing and play keyboards in clubs and restaurants in Atlanta, GA, where she moved in 1972 and still lives. She also did hundreds of commercial jingles (famously, Tillie the All-Time Teller for the first successful ATM in the US) and she sang backup vocals on tour with Burt Bacharach and Roy Orbison. Susan got into voiceover work at Doppler Studios in Atlanta when the voice actor hired for a particular commercial didn't show up, and studio owner Pete Caldwell suggested she do the spot instead. Bam! She got a whole new career! Susan ended up doing spots for Coca Cola, IBM, Papa John's Pizza, McDonald's, AT&T, Wendy's, Goodyear, Ford, Chiquita, etc., for both radio and TV. She also worked on camera for Morrison's, Ford, GA Pacific, IBM, Kimberly Clark, etc. Of course, being the original voice of Siri started a whole new chapter in her life. After she revealed herself as the original voice in 2013, she did hundreds of interviews, appeared on numerous TV shows, and once again began a whole new career—doing speaker events! S5 Ep 176176: Guns & Art with Artist Bonnie Lautenberg and Congresswoman Debbie Mucarsel-Powell

This episode is dedicated to the extraordinary Congresswoman Gabby Giffords and her remarkable contributions to health, safety, humanity and the human spirit. Bonnie Lautenberg is an artist, photographer and writer. Her works have been featured in gallery shows, museums and art fairs throughout the country. In 2022, Lautenberg was appointed by the White House to the President's Advisory Committee on the Arts. Lautenberg is the type of artist who seamlessly communicates her seasoned life experiences through the lens of her camera and her digital canvas. Currently, she divides her time between New York and Palm Beach ‒ retaining the ties she nurtured in Washington, DC while she was the wife of the late Senator Frank Lautenberg. She has been described as "having enough Washington insider stories to fill a book." Giffords Senior Advisor Debbie Mucarsel-Powell was the first South American-born immigrant ever elected to Congress. Debbie immigrated to the United States at the age of 14 with her mother and three sisters. When she was 24, Debbie's father was murdered, which led her to dedicate her life to advocating for commonsense gun reform. Debbie was elected to Florida's 26th Congressional District in 2018. In Congress, she focused on foreign affairs, education, healthcare policy, environmental sustainability, and gun violence prevention. She sat on the Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism & Homeland Security and served as Vice-Chair of the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, where she led efforts to pass the first gun safety legislation in 25 years. Debbie came to Congress with more than 20 years of experience at the FIU College of Medicine, FIU College of Health & Urban Affairs, FIU College of Social Work, Justice and Public Affairs, and Miami-Dade College, as well as experience at nonprofits providing social services, education, and environmental sustainability. Fluent in Spanish, Debbie is also available for Spanish-language media. As someone that has spent her life's work on expanding access to quality healthcare – impacting the lives of thousands, she knows that it's inconceivable that politicians in D.C. would consider ripping away healthcare access from our families. Debbie understands we must continue to improve on what's working and fix what's broken in our health care system, not abandon people who need it the most. Giffords (www.Giffords.org) is a leader in the movement to end gun violence in America. Led by the former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, the organization brings decades of political, legal, and policy expertise to the fight for gun safety. Nearly 50,000 people died from gun violence in the U.S. in 2021. This uniquely American crisis leaves no community untouched — but it doesn't have to be this way. From universal background checks to community-based violence intervention strategies, we know that there are proven solutions that will make our country safer. In statehouses and courthouses across America, we're taking on the gun lobby and winning. Since the tragedy at Sandy Hook in December 2012, the organization has helped pass more than 525 gun safety laws in nearly every state and Washington DC. Gun violence is a complex problem, and ending this epidemic will require a wide range of solutions. Giffords is committed to seeing this fight through, until the promise of a safe and just country is a reality for every person and community in America.
