U40: Stand outs for Scoop crew after two weeks of spring practice
We've had three viewings and several rounds of interviews two weeks into spring football practices. Carey, Josh, Eddie and George get together to talk about the things that are standing out to them most through the second week. And there are zero April Fools shenanigans involved in this one. The defense looks good at a lot of positions. George does have concerns about one. The offense is different, and it's clear there is a mantra with the offense this spring. What about the running back room? The tight end room? The QB room? Is Bowe Bentley going to have a backup role by the time the season gets here? We talk a little bit about the shape of the SEC and college football in general. What teams could we see falling apart in 2026? Why is Vegas so down on the Sooners with win totals and point spreads? We wrap up the women's hoops season with George because OU's men start the Crown tonight. Some diamond talk and even though we did a big Recruiting Report today, we get Josh's thoughts on the decommitment of Micah Rhodes. It is a long one folks! U40: Our impressions after watching an hour of spring practice
Oh man, Carey, Josh, Eddie and George get together to talk about everything they saw during OU's first spring football practice and they break down everything they saw. Tight ends, receivers, defensive line, offensive line, newcomers, coaches, people who got chewed out, people who looked good. It's just a cavalcade of observations from day one. And Carey has some opinions on the fascination with John Mateer's throwing motion. George has some ideas of his own. The take game is actually strong in this one as Carey kind of goes off on OU's decision to do what they're doing to the west side of the stadium. How do you see things? Women's hoops is getting ready for a Sweet 16 showdown and great news as Jen Rocha is returning to coaching for OU softball. Baseball gets set to take on Texas this week as a program at the top of the SEC following series wins against Texas A&M and LSU. What are Eddie's expectations for this weekend. U40: A look ahead to spring football, March Madness is here
It's the start of the NCAA Tournament and time to give our official takes on how we feel about Porter Moser returning to Oklahoma and Roger Denny's decision to keep him. The women are dancing and they will be dancing late on Friday night. We're hoping the people show up for a 9pm tip-off. And it is spring break and there is no spring football, but next week, spring football returns. We talk a little bit about the position rooms heading into spring and some of the storylines that would make us believe that things are going to go well at certain positions. We take deep dives into the offensive line and receiving rooms as we try and remind ourselves of who is gone and where they went. Carey is ready to read some reports about Taylor Tatum's safety adventures at Michigan while Eddie volunteers to go to Las Vegas to cover the Dan Mullen/Jackson Arnold duo at UNLV. U40: It's been a cool week of getting back to football stuff
We've been busy around the Scoop offices and that's the way we like it. OU spring football media day was on Monday and Carey is here with some of his impressions since Eddie and George have been burning up the YouTube channel. Got some leftover thoughts from all the guys as well, like what the offensive line could be with the current roster, how productive we think some of the new tight ends could be. Are we not talking enough about Trynae Washington at tight end? After Jim Nagy's comments on Owen Heinecke the other day, George has an update on where Heinecke is in terms of his next move. We've talked a lot about the future freaks weekend, but what about the aftermath? Where did the Sooners make up the most ground? And with what players? George and Carey delve into the decision that has to be made in regards to Porter Moser and we can't get enough of Jason Witten. The podcast is a big one this week because with spring sports, there is plenty to talk about. Aliyah Chavez WAS NOT the SEC Freshman of the Year! How does that happen? Cooper Witten's commitment was huge as the Sooners get ready to host a massive Future Freaks recruiting event in Norman. Josh is here with the latest on that. Spring football is just around the corner and we cannot wait to cover it. What company do you want plastered on OU's football jerseys next season? Because something is definitely coming. The on-field drills start today at the NFL Combine and Owen Heinecke is a part of things. Who could be the biggest draft surprise of this OU class? And who do we think won't get drafted? George has some interesting numbers on John Mateer's usage in the offense and what that needs to look like moving forward. Baseball is off to a pretty hot start and Eddie is here to tell us all about it. U40: OU finds replacement for DeMarco, talking changes in CFB for 2026
Spring is in full swing as baseball and softball are underway, but the Sooners are still producing plenty of football news as Deland McCullough has been tabbed to take over for DeMarco Murray as OU's newest running backs coach. We talk with Josh McCuistion about what that means for recruiting at the position and we get into the running back room in general. We take some time to look at some of the coaching moves during the offseason as a lot of big name offensive and defensive coordinators have landed at Power 4 schools with aspirations for the College Football Playoffs next season. Which ones could we see working out and which ones could we see being busts? Are Zane Rowe and OU on the outs? Josh is here to tell us more. And we talk some hoops as the men are on fire! And so is Lloyd Noble! Plus stickball is off to a fast start. Lots to get into on this week's edition of the Unofficial 40 podcast. U40: Coaching moves, NFL Draft, winter workouts and Bedlam football
DeMarco Murray surprised us all by taking a job in the NFL and now the Sooners will begin the search for his replacement. Brent Venables has found his replacement for Jay Valai in Michigan's LaMar Morgan. What do we know about him? The Sooners have a ton of players selected to participate in the NFL Combine. We talk about where some of these guys might be drafted. George talks about some winter workout standouts he's hearing about and we talk about the hornet's nest the mayors of Norman and Stillwater are stirring up with this Bedlam legislation. U40: It's a national signing day celebration! No it's not.
There has been a lot of news floating around lately, so forgive some of us if we forgot it (used to be) is the biggest day of the year. National Signing Day! Actually no one remembered because most everyone signs in the early period and then you have the portal. But the Sooners do have a notable addition in LeBron Bauer to celebrate on national signing day. The Sooners are looking for a new cornerbacks coach after Jay Valai is headed to the NFL. What insight do we have on the hire? The Oklahoma Supreme Court also paves the way for the city of Norman to build OU's next arena off campus. We've got some hoops talk as well. We highlight Jennie Baranczyk's squad more than we get depressed about Porter's squad. U40: Getting to know the new power structure of OU athletics
There has been a massive change at the top of OU athletics as we were introduced to Roger Denny yesterday alongside President Joe Harroz and Chair of Athletics, Randall Stephenson. How will this affect fundraising? NIL? Budgets? Facilities? We have a lot of questions. And are we ready to say that Joe Castiglione was pushed out as this new era of players making money begins? We've also got a show packed with OU hoops talk as Bob Przybylo joins the Unofficial 40 for the first time in a long time. What can OU learn about Indiana's title and apply it to their roster?
College football season is officially over now that Indiana has defeated Miami to win the National Championship. This is a good thing for everyone in college football right? So how did we get here? What did Indiana do that we can apply to the Sooners' roster? Indiana proved it's not just about who is spending the most money on players. It's about a whole lot more than just that. We dive into our thoughts on how they built this thing. And we ask ourselves how close OU is to mirroring some of their approach to being the best in the country. We take a look at the construction of OU's roster heading into the 2026 season and players from the portal who will make the biggest impact next season as we wait on spring football to get started. And what is going on with Porter Moser's squad? They look lifeless and lost. Have we made the decision already? Time to move on from the Moser era? George is on vacation this week. Josh is headed to vacation next week. But you'll always have Carey and Eddie. Especially since Eddie wasn't caught up in the PC North fraud going on in OKC. U40: The portal is closing. Taking stock of OU's class. Anything left?
Carey and Eddie start off the pod by relaying their experience at OU basketball last night. IT WAS AWFUL! Now we're on to portal talk and evaluating OU's haul. Could OU have done better? Yes. But they don't have a $40 million roster to work with like some others. Nagy was in quick and now is out looking for a few needs at the right price. Also putting a wrap on all the talent the Sooners lost in the portal. With what the Sooners have now, what does the 2026 team look like. And when players get paid, there are consequences to be paid. Basically, if you aren't performing and if you aren't healthy, you aren't guaranteed anything in this climate. It's dog eat dog. We discuss. Jason Witten is the tight ends coach and George is going skiing for the first time. He has married into a skiing family. Don't get goaded into going down the black slopes George! U40: Telling the stories of OU's portal victories
Josh was out at Navy All-American practices during today's show so Carey, Eddie and George took over the show. We're talking portal, portal, portal and giving some context on how some of OU's biggest grabs in the portal went down. What happened between OU and Indiana before Parker Livingstone chose the Sooners? And how big was Brent's dogged determination in flying out to meet with Cole Sullivan and his family in the middle of portal visits? We also talk about what's left in the portal as well as how this sets the Sooners up for next season. U40: The portal is swallowing up a lot of OU players. Any concerns?
It's been a fast and furious day of Oklahoma football players entering the transfer portal. As we were recording the podcast today, we got the news that Mike Hawkins was entering the portal. And even more came after that. George has updates on potential coaching changes. Josh is heading to Orlando for the Under Armour All-American week where he's anxious to catch up with Zane Rowe and other major OU projects. Rowe, the former OU commit, has long been on our radar since we first saw him as a freshman taking on Michael Fasusi in camps. And we have so many other questions about the QB room and the depth there with Hawkins' departure. Surely this means Mateer is coming back right? And some aren't in agreement about Davon Jordan and how much that hurts the Sooners heading into next season. A lot to talk about and a lot of real time processing during this edition of the Unofficial 40 THE FULL RUNDOWN FOLLOWS BELOW: 0:00 - Welcome back to the Unofficial 40! Happy New Year edition. Merry Christmas and welcome to Oklahoma football Portal Season!
The last Unofficial 40 before Christmas. So Merry Christmas everybody! It's almost that other magical time of the year, Portal Season. The guys get together and talk about exactly what is happening inside the Switzer Center as players are starting to announce their intentions to the enter the portal which opens Jan. 2. Where are the Sooners looking to fill their biggest needs? What coaches will be around to coach these guys in the spring? We've also got some John Mateer talk for you as we're still hashing over his role in this offense and as the leader of the OU offense. The linebacker position is one of those positions we're all keeping a close eye on. And the front office is working hard to bring back some players you might have just expected to either move on or enter the NFL draft. Eddie brings in a little hoops love and Josh is getting ready for a trip to a magical place for a high school All-American game. U40: Will OU's defense puts the clamps down on Alabama and head to L.A.?
It's Tuesday, but since the Sooners play on Friday, we're treating this like a Wednesday. And we have to get Eddie in the mood because he just wants the game to be here. Like we all do. We're talking about the matchup but we've also done most of the media stuff this week. So we have plenty to talk about. It's a challenge for both teams to have a rematch. But does OU having the best defense give them the edge? We all agree John Mateer and the OU offense has to be better. We got to see a little bit of practice yesterday. What do we think about guys like R Mason Thomas and Jake Maikkula after seeing them out there? Bedlam basketball was very good to the men and the women. We have a little hoops talk for you as well. Josh gives a preview of what to expect at some of the All-American games coming up early next month as well. It's a big one in Norman Friday night. One of the biggest ever. We're antsy for the start of College Football Playoff week
It's just Wednesday. The Sooners are still 9 days away from their first round matchup with Alabama in Norman. The All-SEC teams were announced yesterday and OU had 10 players represented. They also had the SEC Special Teams Player of the Year, Tate Sandell, announced during the show. We gush about Sandell but we had to stop. No jinxes needed here. But we're ready to see what this grimey Sooners team can do in a playoff full of great teams. Our question is this? Who has really been through the mud this season like Oklahoma? Or Georgia? Or even Alabama? Has Texas Tech been through the mud and had to have people question their offense like some of the teams in the SEC? Yes, we're officially SEC homers now. Josh is here to talk about another huge 2027 commitment, we mix in some hoops talk and George has his rants on Notre Dame and the CFP committee. Notre Dame... Leave Ivan Maisel alone! It's National Signing Day on the Unofficial 40
Jim Nagy and Brent Venables put together their first full recruiting class together in the 2026 cycle. How do we feel the partnership is going after listening to both of them talk about the class on National Signing Day? And what about the standouts in this class? Josh McCuistion thinks he can make an argument that the offensive side of the ball has more talent than the defensive side of the ball. And what about the ones that got away? And the ones, like Jonathan Hatton, that didn't? We also hit on some College Football Playoff talk and a little bit of hoops. Always a big show week when it's signing day! U40: Will LSU leave it all out on the field? Or are they already done?
It's one of the biggest games anyone has seen in Norman in a long time. OU is one win away from heading to the College Football Playoff. Speaking of that, there are a couple of teams that could really blow this thing all up if things fall the right way. We discuss OU's position in the playoff race. Are the Sooners destined to play Notre Dame in Norman? It's also going to be a MASSIVE recruiting weekend for the Sooners. A commitment happened just after we stopped taping actually. Josh with more on the big names in town. It also seems to be a weekly tradition now. We pick a room on the offensive side of the ball and just tear it to shreds. This week, it's the wide receiver room. We pour one out for the death of the green bean casserole. John Mateer may have killed it in Oklahoma. Keep Eddie away from him during pregame warmups. U40: Can Sooners get to 10-2 with this RB situation?
Oklahoma is currently ranked No. 8 in the College Football Playoff Rankings. That means that as long as OU wins out, they should be good for inclusion in the playoff. It also means they are in the running for a first-round home game. Carey, Josh, Eddie and George talk about the playoff hunt and more importantly, Missouri. The Tigers head into Norman trying to play the spoiler role. And there is an issue. The Oklahoma running back room has few available bodies with Xavier Robinson and Tory Blaylock all banged up right now. How did this happen? We also take a deep dive into the play of John Mateer. What do we attribute his struggles to? And is he for sure the guy next year for the Sooners? What role does Ben Arbuckle play in all of this? Next we talk recruiting and the impact this season is having on potential recruits. New commitment is in! It's another edition of the Unofficial 40 podcast. OU heads to Alabama with playoff hopes firmly within reach
The Sooners get set to head to Alabama for one of the biggest SEC games of the season. The Sooners can likely punch their ticket to the CFB Playoffs with a win. Otherwise, it's hoping other things can fall their way. We also dive into the west side stadium expansion and what that will look like in the coming years. What about stadium capacity? What about people losing their seats? And coaching changes and buyouts have us all asking ourselves what is going on in college football. Brian Kelly suing LSU? LSU saying they never fired him? We're here for all the drama. And how much could the Sooners benefit from the uncertainty at other schools that have fired their coaches. OU is already making inroads with Penn State's recruiting class. Is there more to come? Basketball us underway and we've seen the OU women and men against quality competition already. U40: Venables' depth on defense, CFP rankings and OU gameday atmosphere
The Unofficial 40 is back for the least tense episode in a while. It's a bye week and we have plenty to talk about with the first CFP rankings released last night. We also get into a discussion about the depth of the OU defense and how uncommon this team is from that perspective. How has Venables done it? And has there ever been a great cornerback at Oklahoma that people didn't complain about at one time or another? Coaches are being fired left and right. We're living in unprecedented times. We're also wondering if Jackson Arnold has a home after struggling at Oklahoma and Auburn? Where could we see him land next? What this week has taught us about where the offense is now
It's been a full week of trying to figure out what is wrong with John Mateer and Oklahoma's offense. We started out with Saturday frustrations and worked our way through players and coaches to try and find answers as to what is really happening with Mateer and the OU passing game. With a road battle with Tennessee looming, the Sooners have to get better. And the mistakes have to disappear quickly if this team is going to do anything in these next two road trips. Josh is here to talk about the recent commitment of Jahsiear Rogers, the former Penn State commitment, and some other nuggets out on the recruiting trail. Eddie gets a little basketball talk in and we talk a little about the madness all over the world of college football with mass firings happening all over. Could Venables be joining that list if things go a certain way down the stretch? It's this week's edition of the Unofficial 40! U40: Can the offense keep climbing as Ole Miss comes to town?
We're back to big games in Norman as the Sooners have rebounded from their loss to Texas and seem to have found a running game. A big part of this being a big game is also a healthier hand from John Mateer even though we still don't think he's all the way back yet. We also talk about the weirdness surrounding Kendel Dolby and Jovantae Barnes as both have been absent from the lineups recently. And we know lots of rumors are flying about Dolby. It's also going to be an important recruiting weekend in Norman. And with coaches being fired left and right, could the Sooners find some room for some key 2026 prospects as most of the recruiting efforts have turned to 2027? U40: Venables facing another must win situation at South Carolina
Brent Venables is no stranger to these matchups. Win, and the monkey is off your back. For now. Lose, and the seat immediately warms up. The Sooners are favored, but they're on the road. They have the defense, but they lack the run game. How much healthier will John Mateer be this week? And who do the Sooners lean on at the running back position? And where are we with the amount of blame that should be placed on the offensive line? And the Sooners have offered a Penn State commit that could help bolster the receiving corps. U40: We can't figure out if Mateer will play, much less who will win
We're halfway through the week and the John Mateer news continues to confuse. Indoor practices, interesting press conference answers, good-on-good, hiding in bushes, it's part OU-TX part media frenzy this week in Norman. The guys all get together to try and make sense out of the nonsense while also trying to figure out whether OU can win this game. Expect the unexpected, but we're trying to predict off the expected. Which never seems to work out in this game. Who are some players we could see stepping up that aren't really expected? What about the Venables/Sarkisian matchup? OU football returns with Michael Hawkins at the helm
Oklahoma football comes off their bye week without their starting quarterback as John Mateer had surgery last week. But that doesn't mean we're not excited to see what Michael Hawkins Jr., can do in his absence. Let's face it, Kent State is not the story this week. It's Texas. At least for the fans. We're also looking forward to Javonnie Gibson's first game as a Sooner after working to make it all the way back from a broken leg suffered last spring. Can OU run the ball against what will probably be their worst opponent of the season? And Josh is here to talk some recruiting as the Sooners appear to be on the verge of getting another commitment soon. U40: Mateer is out. Hawkins is up. Can the Sooners hold on to a CFP spot?
John Mateer is out for at least the next few weeks and the guys are here to tell you how it all went down in the offices yesterday as we worked to track down the news and to share the context of what we have heard and what happens moving forward. It's the bye week. How will the Sooners use it to get better with Hawkins at QB? And the running game still needs a lot of work. Is Kent State the beginning or the end of Jaydn Ott as a productive member of the running back room? The SEC also released future schedules yesterday and no one saw Ole Miss landing as a permanent rival for the Sooners. We break down our thoughts on the schedule. U40: OU President Harroz joins us as we podcast from the North Oval tailgate
It was a big day at the University of Oklahoma as the university unveiled their new tailgating initiative at the North Oval. SoonerScoop was invited to see it for ourselves and to record a podcast for the fans in attendance. OU President Joe Harroz dropped by and discussed the new tailgating area and we got to chat about the search for a new athletic director, Brent Venables giving up $1 million for revenue sharing/NIL, the west side stadium expansion and what is the deal with this Randall Stephenson guy? We also made Gabe Ikard sit down and talk about his impressions of the new tailgating area and we talked a little bit of football as well. The Oklahoma Breakdown co-host also talked with Carey about maybe doing a crossover episode in the North Oval for the Michigan game. Anyone interested? George and Carey are back together! U40: What is Ben Arbuckle's playcalling going to look like
It's game week and all the media duties are over. We've talked to Brent Venables, Ben Arbuckle and all the team captains for Team 131. We don't know exactly what this is going to look like Saturday but we're interested to see how it goes down. Depth Charts? We're not too caught up in who is sitting where. There are reasons. We talk about some of that. We also talk about Ben Arbuckle's debut. Will he go through some of the same issues that guy out west went through early in his Oklahoma playcalling career? And what type of year could this be for Kendal Daniels? Could he be the one player whose NFL stock raises the highest on this team after a good season. U40: Al Eschbach drops by unannounced so we made him pod with us
It started out like just another Unofficial 40 podcast in studio. And then after 30 minutes, Al Eschbach just decided to drop by the studios unannounced. So we did what we always do when people come into the studio during a pod. We put him on the air and talked some OU football and the future of OU's offense along with the future of Brent Venables. What is going on in Auburn with their offense and Jackson Arnold? We of course get into some recruiting with Josh McCuistion, but we're still a little bit in awe of The Legend, Al Eschbach coming on the pod with us for the first time. U40: We look at key positions at this point in fall camp
Bill Bedenbaugh spoke this week about his offensive line and Carey, Josh, Eddie and George are here to give it all a hard look. Bedenbaugh has to find the right mix of experience versus talent on the offensive line if he wants to play two star freshman. We examine all the options and give our two cents on what we could see happening. The secondary also intrigues us with the talent and the buzz coming out of camp surrounding corners who haven't played a lot. And Peyton Bowen isn't a bust. He's just been hurt most of his career. Are we going to see Bowen step up at some point and take over with Billy Bowman type play in the secondary? We are ready for the John Mateer Venmo controversy to be over and we think that it is. And stop yelling at us for writing about it! It's our job! And the wide receiver spot might be a little concerning as far as quality depth now that we look at it closer. And of course we talk more recruiting with Josh and how big the official weekend will become for the Michigan game. THE FULL BREAKDOWN FOLLOWS BELOW: 0:00 - Welcome back to the Unofficial 40! It's been a great preseason for the Scoop crew to get out and watch portions of practice thanks to Brent Venables' media friendliness this August. Carey and Josh get to weigh in on what they've been seeing and hearing from fall camp as we break down the standouts, the injured and maybe some disappointments so far. Josh updates us on the recruiting trail and whether OU fans should be worried about Jake Kreul moving up his commitment date. We also look at what's left for OU in recruiting. U40: Trying to crack the code on how this season will go
The gang is finally back together after honeymoons, flight delays and the start of fall/preseason camp. We just had a media gathering with 7 players, Brent Venables and Ben Arbuckle. What did we take from the preseason get together? First off, we're shocked by how big Jaydn Ott actually is as a running back. We pine over him for a bit during the show. We're also not going into a doom pod, but we're questioning as much as possible about the makeup of this team heading into the season. How big is this year? It's as big as it gets for the future direction of the program. We try and work our way through various positions and how we see things playing out this season. From the offensive line to the secondary we have plenty of questions. It's a full on preseason think tank going on in this episode. Brace yourselves Sooner fans. There is a member of the Scoop crew who is high on the hopium after SEC Media Days. We take a look back at what we learned from OU's trip to Atlanta for talking season. And we learned that a lot of national media is high on the Sooners heading into 2025. Granted, hearts have been broken around here and we're coming off one of the worst seasons in recent OU history. But are the national people seeing something we're just not allowing ourselves to see? John Mateer was definitely one of the biggest stars in Atlanta. Carey, Eddie and George reconvene after a long week of surprises and press conferences. And we're diving head first into what we feel is going to happen inside the OU athletics department. Football is a beast of it's own, but there were a lot of other coaches at Joe Castiglione's retirement press conference that are left wondering where they stand in the new world order without Castiglione at the helm. We talk about the power structure of OU's athletics department moving forward. What does OU need that they don't have? Do they know what they need? Or is that for the next AD to decide. A big takeaway from George's upcoming John Mateer series
We're back for another episode as the Thunder euphoria has died down. You're welcome Mavs fans who also listen. It's July so we're hanging on and hoping for a quick return of football. Today we caught up with George on his visit with John Mateer as he's ready to run an extensive series on OU's QB after talking to Mateer, family members, former coaches, analysts, everybody. We're not giving away anything, but we have seen the nearly hour long transcript and George has previewed some of the quotes for us. And we have one big takeaway about John Mateer. We also hit the recruiting trail and give our thoughts on some of the OSU wins over OU on the recruiting trail. It may not have been something that was aesthetically pleasing to us, but the Jaden O' Neal/Bowe Bentley worked out as we believe Ben Arbuckle wanted. We finally make Eddie happy and get into the Thunder parade discussion as Carey, Eddie and George all were in OKC for the big event.
