Mailbag for Week 5

Jeremiah and Aaron are joined by friend of the show Susie Rantz to answer a whole lot of kinda depressing questions. Among the topics they tackles are the mailaise around the team, why they aren't spending more money and what needs to change in order to start winning. Fun times! Hey Sounders, feel free to start winning

It's only been three games, but we're already getting antsy over here after the Sounders dropped two very winnable points at home against the Colorado Rapids. Jeremiah and Aaron break it down with a little help from our friend Susie Rantz.  Susie also sticks around for a second segment where we talk about the imminent sale of the Seattle Reign to a group that includes the Sounders. Sounders FC - Colorado Rapids preview w/ Backheeled's Joseph Lowery

If you've been following MLS at all in recent years, you've probably encountered Joe Lowery's content. He's one of the most prolific and articulate analysts covering MLS these days, appearing everywhere from The Athletic, MLSSoccer.com, and the Total Soccer Show. He also has his own budding site, Backheeled.com, where he's collected some of the most interesting voices in American soccer. As you've probably heard, we recently created a partnership with him that gives Advocate members of Sounder at Heart free access to Backheeled.com. Joe and Jeremiah talked a bit about the partnership. They also discussed this week's Sounders opponent, the Colorado Rapids and how they're offseason transformation is going. Missing five starters, Sounders actually played OK

It's not the sexiest or most interesting position to have, but Jeremiah and Aaron remain at least cautiously optimistic about the Sounders following their season-opening loss to LAFC. S2023 Ep 449Episode 449: And just like that, the season is over

I’ll admit, I was not quite ready for the 2023 season to end. A season that had once been virtually left for dead had come roaring back to life over the last couple months and I had sorta talked myself into the belief that this season was destined to end at MLS Cup. Maybe not actually lifting, but at least making a valiant charge, maybe even with Nicolas Lodeiro and Raúl Ruidiaz putting in a couple notable performances along the way. Nothing I saw against LAFC totally dissuaded me from believing that outcome was at least plausible, but the 1-0 loss at least means it’s no longer possible. If I’m to pull back a little, I suppose the final game was rather predictable. The Sounders played reasonably well -- I think you can even say they outplayed LAFC -- but couldn’t convert their chances, while LAFC made the most of theirs. Maxime Crepeau is a big reason why the sounders couldn’t convert, but the decisive factor ending up being the most predictable thing ever: Denis Buounga racing down the left wing and firing an absolute laser past Stefan Frei. S2023 Ep 446Episode 446: A disappointing but hardly disastrous result

Much to our chagrin, the Seattle Sounders will be playing a Game 3 of their best-of-3 series after falling to FC Dallas 3-1 on Saturday. The match started off pretty much disastrously, with Dallas getting two goals inside 20 minutes. To their credit the Sounders played much better over the next 70ish minutes until a Jackson Ragen giveaway allowed Dallas to score an ultimately meaningless insurance goal. During those 70 minutes, though, Jordan Morris looked about as good as he’s ever looked, scoring one goal, having another waved off for a questionable offside and just giving the Dallas defense all sorts of fits. There was also a penalty not given despite VAR’s recommendation and a few other good chances for the Sounders to equalize. All in all, a disappointing but hardly disastrous result. We discuss. S2023 Ep 443Episode 443: The Sounders are riding a 10-game unbeaten streak

The Sounders ran their unbeaten streak to 10 games and took a 1-0 series lead over FC Dallas in the first round playoff series. They got goals from Albert Runsak and Jordan Morris, a 12th career playoff shutout from Stefan Frei and generally looked about as good as they’ve looked all year. S2023 Ep 439Episode 439: How to feel about another scoreless tie...

The Sounders closed out their regular-season home schedule with a 0-0 tie with the Vancouver Whitecaps. I think we can fairly say the Sounders had the better chances and certainly had more of them, but it would probably be a stretch to suggest they deserved much more than they got. Defensively, they were stout and limited a very dangerous Whitecaps opponents to just four shots, and only one each from Brian White and Ryan Gauld. Offensively, though, it was a lot of half-chances without too many clear-cut ones. The point was good enough to keep the Sounders in third place, but they’ll likely need some sort of result in their season-finale against St. Louis to maintain home-field advantage in the first round. It also closed the books on what is now officially their worst-ever home record over the course of a season, albeit one in which they allowed just .65 goals per game (the fewest they’ve ever allowed). S2023 Ep 436Episode 436: Interview with Sounders FC President Hugh Weber

When Hugh Weber was officially announced as the Seattle Sounders’ new President of Business operations there was an awful lot going on. The team was deep into the process of updating their visual identity; preparing to open a new training facility that would also house the business side; and had just unveiled their new shirt sponsor Providence Health. Things have settled down a bit since then, but are getting ready to ramp back up. On Tuesday, the Sounders will unveil that new visual identity and they’re now just months away from officially opening their Longacres training facility. Last week, we had a chance to meet with Weber to discuss all of these things as well as things like the Sounders’ interest in exploring the possibility of building a stadium at Longacres; how their relationship with OL Reign could evolve; the status of some of the promises around the Providence sponsorship; and learned that the team is currently enjoying very robust season-ticket renewal rates while also taking a record number of deposits on new ticket packages. S2023 Ep 432Episode 432: Interview with Tacoma Defiance head coach Wade Webber

One of the most interesting people in the Seattle soccer scene is undeniably Wade Webber. The Tacoma Defiance head coach is from Federal Way, helped the Sounders win two A-League titles, played several years in MLS, became a high school history teacher and helped run Washington Premier before joining the Sounders as an academy coach. For the last three seasons, he’s headed Defiance, overseeing easily their most successful stretch during their nine seasons of existence. The Defiance have now won back-to-back Pacific Division titles in MLS Next Pro and have a chance finish with their best-ever regular season with two games remaining. During our interview, we discuss some of what is behind the Defiance’s success, learn a bit more about Sam Adeniran’s departure, get a scouting report on Braudilio Rodrigues and navigate some cat issues. In the subscriber-only portion of the interview, we also discuss the improvements Reed Baker-Whiting has made this season, the emergence of Snyder Brunell and get the story behind the banana bread phenomena. S2023 Ep 431Episode 431: What happens when a team doesn't win a 'must-win' match?

For a half, all was seemed good in the Sounders world. They were flying around the field, scoring goals and beating the Timbers at home. They took a 2-0 lead into halftime that easily could have been 3-0, but just as importantly were making the plays they needed to make to keep the Timbers off the scoreboard. We all know what happened next. Léo Chu picked up what I still insist was a pretty soft second yellow card, the Sounders went down a man and the Timbers came roaring back to tie the game and ultimately claim a point. S2023 Ep 429Episode 429: What a satisfying win

It has been far too long since we have recorded after a win. In fact, it’s been nearly two months since the sounders last won a game, a streak they finally ended on Wednesday in very satisfying faction when they beat Austin FC 2-1 on a 90th minute Albert Rusnak. In fairness, the Sounders were the beneficiaries of some fortunate VAR decisions, but give them credit for putting themselves in position to take advantage. Both goals they had were well taken and they did a good job of limiting Austin’s chances. I think you can even argue that they had as many and as good of chances as Austin, if not better. The Sounders did all this while rotating fully half their outfield players. Dare I say it, but this win felt … important? Let's discuss! S2023 Ep 427Episode 427: What's going on inside the Sounders' locker room?

There's been a lot of talk about what's going on behind the scenes with the Seattle Sounders. To help us get to the bottom of that, we asked Niko Moreno to join us. As you might imagine, it's not all rainbows and unicorns but possibly not as messy as you might fear. It's also becoming apparent that the players are aware that change is on the way and how some of them are positioning themselves for their next moves.    Sponsors Full Pull Wines Watson's Counter Nos Audietis is the flagship podcast for Sounder at Heart, which became a reader-supported website on Aug. 21. S2023 Ep 426Episode 426: Our first mini-episode

Welcome to the first episode of a still-unnamed show. It’s envisioned as a minipodcast by Sounder at Heart. Today is Monday, Aug. 28 and I am Jeremiah Oshan. My hope is to do this podcast every Monday and every morning of a gameday with the intention of sort of seting the table for what just happened or what we expect to happen. For today’s episode, I’ll be doing a quick breakdown of the Minnesota United match, giving a quick preview of the Austin FC match on Wednesday and looking back on my story about the Sam Adeniran situation Sponsors Full Pull Wines Watson's Counter Nos Audietis is the flagship podcast for Sounder at Heart, which became a reader-supported website on Aug. 21. S2023 Ep 425Episode 425: Mailbag for week 25

We tried something new with the mailbag episode: Rather than soliciting questions from Twitter, we sourced them from our new Discord server. We were really pleased with the quality of questions and talked a lot about roster building, who might succeed Brian Schmetzer eventually as well as talked a bit about the new minority owners. It went so well, that we think we'll keep doing it this way for at least the next few weeks. This is also a good chance to promote the Discord server, access to which is limited to Sounder at Heart Supporter tier members and above. There's a lot of fun stuff already being discussed there and you can get in on the action too by becoming a member. S2023 Ep 424Episode 424: Things went from bad to unwatchable

Coming out of a three-week break in which they presumably worked on tactics, got rejuvenated were hoping to start the stretch run off strong, the Sounders instead turned in one of their worst performances of the season, a 2-0 loss at home to Atlanta United.  The first half was especially bad with the Sounders surrendering 70% of possession and getting run off the pitch at times. Jeremiah and Aaron discuss where we go from here. S2023 Ep 423Episode 423: Interview with former Sounders GM Garth Lagerwey

Garth Lagerwey spent eight mostly very successful season with the Seattle Sounders. On Sunday, he makes his return as the President and CEO of Atlanta United. As he did regularly when he was with the Sounders, Lagerwey was very gracious with his time when he met with us on Wednesday. We talked about his transition to Atlanta, what he has liked about Leagues Cup and what he thinks of the roster he left the Sounders and Craig Waibel. Producer's note: Jeremiah had some audio difficulties and as a result doesn't sound so great. We apologize. Episode 420: Interview with Sounders and USMNT Forward Jordan Morris

We had planned to do a "normal" episode this week to talk about the Leagues Cup loss to RSL, but our scheduling got a bit complicated this week. So, rather than listen to Jeremiah and Aaron bemoan one of the worst performances in recent memory, you'll have to suffice with this interview we did with Jordan Morris earlier in the week. Hope you enjoy it. Sponsors Full Pull Wines Watson's Counter If you'd like to become a subscriber to our Substack, that can be found here. S2023 Ep 418Episode 418: Mailbag for Leagues Cup Week 1

Jeremiah and Aaron take a bunch of questions from listeners that inquire about Brian Schmetzer's contract situation, whether advancing in the Leagues Cup is actually desirable and what we want the starting lineup to look like going forward. S2023 Ep 417Episode 417: Limping into the Leagues Cup

That was not what the Sounders needed or were really expecting was it? Coming off a disappointing loss to the Earthquakes, and needing a win badly, the Sounders played much better but still had to settle for a 1-1 tie with FC Dallas. The Sounders have now not scored more than one goal or won consecutive games at home in about three months. This while playing good by almost all the underlying numbers. Still, the sounders head into the Leagues Cup break not in an entirely awful position, fourth in the West and only one point out of second. We put it all in perspective and assess the Sounders' chances in Leagues Cup. Sponsors Full Pull Wines Watson's Counter If you'd like to become a subscriber to our Substack, that can be found here. S2023 Ep 416Episode 416: Getting to know Ballard FC

Since their inaugural season of 2022, Ballard FC has taken the USL League 2 world by storm. Not only are they consistently filling up the 1,500-person capacity at Interbay Stadium, but they're winning a ton of games as well. In the recently concluded regular season, they finished 10-1-1 to win the Northwest Division and are now hosting the Western Conference quarterfinals and finals this weekend. You can buy tickets here. To discuss their past and future, we brought on co-founders Sam Zisette and Lamar Neagle. S2023 Ep 415Episode 415: Fun while it lasted

Remember all those good vibes from a couple of days ago? Those seem to be pretty much gone after the Sounders looked very flat in a 2-0 loss to the San Jose Earthquakes. Going with a very lightly rotated lineup, the Sounders looked like a team that was not at anywhere close to its best. Mark Kastner joins Jeremiah for this quick pod.
