The Seattle Sounders and Real Salt Lake have a lot of shared history. Right now, RSL seems to be getting the better of things, having won the last four meetings (including the penalty shootout in 2021).  Once again, we caught up with friend of the show Matt Montgomery who has recently started a new project called Wasatch Soccer Sentinel (effectively what used to be RSL Soapbox), who gives us the inside scoop. The Sounders got off to a pretty awesome start to their 2023 MLS regular season. The 4-0 win over the Colorado Rapids was every bit as convincing as the score suggested and we had a ton of impressive performances, highlighted for me by Jordan Morris brace and general involvement in just about every dangerous chance the sounders had. It's obviously just one game and the Rapids might be bad -- and were at least missing a couple starters -- but this was a very positive performance either way. After an odd preseason that featured the FIFA Club World basically in the middle of it, the Seattle Sounders are finally just days away from their MLS regular season opener. To help preview the season, Aaron and Jeremiah welcomed Sounder at Heart colleagues Susie Rantz and Mark Kastner to the show to help us. We discussed our outlook for the season and explained some of the tactical tweaks the Sounders are implementing that they hope can help get them back to their rightful place atop MLS. The Seattle Sounders will be playing Louisville City in their final preseason game on Saturday. The Club World Cup came at a particularly inopportune time for the Seattle Sounders. Despite being about midway through their preseason, however, the Sounders acquitted themselves well and actually looked like the better team for much of their loss to Al Ahly. Don't worry, we understand that almost no one really wants to be talking about things like sponsorships right now. But the Seattle Sounders' decision to join forces with Providence on a wide-ranging "partnership" that also happens to include the Catholic healthcare provider's name being prominently displayed on their jerseys has made completely moving on rather difficult. Fans remain upset and the Sounders are still seeking to calm those tensions. In the last week, the Sounders have met with ECS, the Alliance Council and other supporters' groups to at least begin the process of coming to an understanding. Similarly, they asked to talk to us and, more importantly, our audience. Jeremiah met with Chief Revenue and Marketing Officer Taylor Graham as well as COO Maya Mendoza-Exstrom at Longacres on Monday to sort of replicate some of those conversations.  This much was clear: the individuals who run the Sounders remain as committed as ever to championing these causes. In fact, they gave the impression that they want to put those issues even more front and center.  For some fans, we imagine this will come as comfort. For others, it's entirely fair to question the sincerity of that commitment given Providence's positions on those causes. We caught up with Sam Rogers while he was with the United States national team in Los Angeles. It's been quite a couple years for Rogers, who turned disappointment over not making the Sounders first team into a journey that now has him poised to win his first senior national team cap. The Seattle Sounders are stuck in a bit of a rut right now, not necessarily playing badly but definitely not playing well. Since last we met -- all of two weeks ago -- the Sounders' season has taken a rather frustrating turn. They are now winless and scoreless in three straight and suddenly the playoffs don't seem quite as assured as they once were. We're pretty sure the difference mostly comes down to health but that is not itself a complete answer. We give our thoughts. A lot has happened since we last spoke, most recently a 3-0 win over Tigres in Leagues Cup and the news that Gonzalo Pineda was leaving the Sounders for Atlanta United. Somewhat remarkably, the Sounders still find themselves coming out of the Gold Cup break undefeated through 13 games. They’re sitting atop the Supporters’ Shield standings with 29 points and have easily the best goal-difference at +15. More remarkable than all of that is they’ve managed this while missing as many as six potential starters for solid chunks of the season. We return to you almost a month after our last recording in much the same place we left you. The Sounders are still riding a best-ever start to the season, still undefeated and still leading the Supporters’ Shield race. They’ve also not yet conceded a goal from open play, a streak that now stands at 900 minutes which is the longest MLS has on record. The latest win was in some ways their most comprehensive. Although the scoreline was a relatively close 2-1, the Sounders finally put together two very good halves and were easily the better team in both. They’ve still got some work to do in and around the penalty area, but they were getting into dangerous spots and didn’t give up a single shot from open play. This was all despite using a lineup that was missing six potential starters -- not even counting Jordan Morris. The Sounders are now officially off to their best start in franchise history, going undefeated and claiming 17 points through their first 7 games while posting a +11 goal-difference. They’re leading hte Supporters’ Shield by three points and have a four-point advantage in the Western Conference.  The Sounders have, of course, done this without Jordan Morris, while only getting 24 minutes in total from Nicolas Lodeiro and their two most recent results have come without Stefan Frei. They now have a chance to head into the June international break with a 6-0-2 record if they can beat expansion Austin FC at home on Sunday. Two weeks of YachtCon: Back to School is now officially in the books. To help us close things out, Sounders GM Garth Lagerwey hung out, shared some insight into his philosophy, teased the hiring of a new sporting director, drank a couple beers and ate a bunch of spicy hot wings. A good time was had by all.

Brian Schmetzer helped us get YachtCon: Back To School started right, putting on his professorial hat to dig into his coaching philosophy and sharing some insight into his tactical approach to 2021.

It wasn't necessarily intended as a Martin Luther King Day episode, but the time of Jeremiah's conversation with Sounders Academy goalkeepers coach Joshua Ford and Head Strength and conditioning coach Sean Muldoon worked out pretty perfectly. Ford and Muldoon have been two of the bigger behind-the-scenes forces in terms of helping raise awareness of various social justice causes among the Sounders. Perhaps most notably is their efforts to bring attention to Manny Ellis' murder, a case that has highlight all sorts of concerning law-enforcement behavior. The Sounders are back in the Western Conference finals. It’s the fourth time in five years and the fifth time in seven years that they’ve been here. That’s something that hasn’t been accomplished since the halcyon days of D.C. United going to each of the first four MLS Cup finals. The Sounders will now host Minnesota United on Monday with a chance to go to their fourth MLS Cup final in five years for a chance to win their third MLS Cup.
