In this episode, I share a story about Winston Churchill and a difficult decision he had to make during WWII back in 1940. 65. Wealth Building Basics - The 4% Rule and Index Funds

In this episode, I double down on creating passive income opportunities to build long-term wealth.* Specifically, I take us through the 4% rule. Why is this rule important? This rule provides a good baseline for withdrawing for retirement. You can use this rule to work backwards and determine how much money you need to save in your working life, to account for the amount you want to live on in your retirement I also share insight into index funds and why I believe that index funds are a great, and fairly simple way, to build passive income. Today's focusing question: How could this rule impact your investment or retirement planning? How can you learn more about the 4% rule? 64. Stop Caring What Others Think

In this episode, I am discussing a topic that many of us can probably relate to, and might even be working on ourselves. However, rather than working on ourselves, I am focusing on how this topic pertains to our children. The topic: How to Stop Caring What Others Think My wife and I have two young daughters and as they are getting older, making more friends, and having more access to social media we have recognized that our girls can tend to get caught up in what others think of them. We have been working on how to coach and influence our girls on how to care less about what others think of them. Some of the areas we are working on include: Developing a healthy sense of self-esteem and confidence Recognizing their efforts and activities Modeling the behavior we expect of our kids Encouraging a diverse social circle Reminding our kids to focus on what they can control Today's focusing question: What can you do for your kids to help them care less about what other people think? 63. Day 1 Mentality

In this episode, I am talking about the concept of 'Day 1 Mentality'. One of my business partners, Chris Suarez, recently shared this concept with our team and it was an excellent reminder for me. The Day 1 Mentality refers to the drive, inspiration, or enthusiasm you experience the first time you do something. Think back about your first day of school, or the first day you opened the doors of your business. You likely experienced an overwhelming sense of Day 1 Mentality on these days. The importance of adopting and maintaining a Day 1 Mentality is vital in achieving success in anything you set out to do. On the contrary, Day 2 Mentality results in complacency. Today's focusing question: Where is your business or career at right now? Do you still have a Day 1 Mentality? If you are operating with a Day 2 Mentality, how can you reinstate a Day 1 Mentality? Who would you have to bring in or enroll to help with this? What projects might you need to take on? 57. Bring in the Ship

In this episode, I share a story from a football camp I attended in high school and how the lesson I learned from the coach still resonates today. What I learned at that camp taught me a lot about overcoming adversity. To come full circle, I recently picked up Ryan Holiday's book: The Obstacle is the Way and 30+ years later this topic is still relevant. One of my favorite lessons from Holiday's book is: obstacles and adversity shouldn't be seen as negativity but as areas of growth. The way we respond to these obstacles will determine our success and happiness in life, and when embraced, obstacles can actually serve as an advantage. Today I'd like to challenge you to ask yourself: What is going on in your world right now where you are focused on the obstacles? In our chaotic world, and with access to and misinformation shared on the internet it is easy to blend our perception and perspective. Today I'd like to challenge you to ask yourself: Where do you need to step back and challenge your own beliefs? Where is your perspective or point of view misshaped or misguided? Ep 46The Comfort Crisis

In this episode, I share some of my takeaways from a book I recently read, 'The Comfort Crisis'. The author, Michael Easter, talks about how we have all become incredibly comfortable; everything we do in our world is easily accessible and we don't have to work very hard to survive - unlike our ancestors. We don't experience a great deal of uncomfort; we have become too comfortable. This comfort that we are so used to hinders us from working hard or pushing through different challenges that life presents. We are accustomed to turning to our trusted technology devices to solve problems or save us from boredom. We just don't spend enough time or energy surviving. How do we introduce more uncomfortable things in our world? What can we do to get out of our comfort zone a bit more? Ep 44The Trust Triangle

In this episode, I share the foundation and various elements of building trust with others. In an article I read some time ago, I learned the three fundamentals of trust: logic, empathy, and authenticity. Understanding these three fundamentals and how you operate in these areas will determine how you operate in your role, whether in life or business. On the contrary, if you lack in any of these areas, it is said that you 'wobble' which can cause a disconnect in building trust with others. Lastly, I break down why you may be stronger in certain areas in your professional world but lacking in your personal world, or vice versa, and ways to improve in those areas. Ep 433 Essential Steps to Making a Change

In this episode, I share the story of Schwinn, the well-known bicycle company, and its unwillingness to adopt new ideas or make changes, which later led them to bankruptcy. What can be learned from the downfall of Schwinn? There are 3 lessons we can take away from this, and these can be applied to either business or life. I believe there are 3 essential steps to making a change: Unwilling vs unable Have a better solution or a better direction to change to You must be able to execute the change Today's challenge: In both your business and your personal world, think about: Where do you think change is necessary? Ep 41Accountability & The Hawthorne Effect

In this episode, I break down why successful people are the most accountable individuals. Simply, they crave accountability, others depending on them to succeed, and they want to be held to a standard. With the #nodaysoff movement, and striving to get better every single day, you have to have some degree of accountability.\ I recently learned about The Hawthorne Effect. This refers to individuals who modify their behavior or performance when they are being observed or are receiving special attention; individuals have a higher sense of motivation or increased effort when they are being watched and expected to perform at a high level. Today's challenge: Where are you missing accountability? What can you put in place today to increase your accountability? Who can hold you accountable? Ep 40Finding Opportunities in Moments of Crisis

In today's episode, I break down how to find opportunities in moments of crisis and share two stories. I share a story about how Johnson & Johnson experienced a crisis in their business that led to nationwide panic and how they took swift action to rectify the situation, and how by doing so, they regained trust among consumers and the public and strengthened their brand and reputation. A friend of mine told me that she had a health crisis occur that changed everything. She told me that after discovering this health challenge, she realized that she really has #nodaysoff from working towards better health. Through this health crisis came the opportunity to have a deeper appreciation for the time and a newfound gratitude for just being alive. She was more grateful for and purposeful around spending time with her loved ones. While no one wants to go through a crisis, know that with crisis, and over time, comes a tremendous amount of opportunity for us to become better and stronger. Today's challenge: What scenario have you gone through that you can look back on and draw lessons from? What opportunities were created out of this? Can you double down on those opportunities? If you have not yet come face to face with a crisis, how can you prepare? Can you study those that have experienced crisis and how they handled the opportunities that came with it? Ep 39Thinking Time

In this episode, I am sharing how the concept of thinking time has been one of the most impactful habits that I have implemented in both my life and business. Thinking time is the concept of creating time and space for you to isolate yourself and spend time asking a number of powerful questions to help you solve problems at a much deeper level. Establishing thinking time in your routine allows you to check the validity of all the assumptions you make on a regular basis. This dedicated time allows you to slow down and focus, and get to the root cause of problems. Here are some questions I challenge you to think around: 1) What do I need to practice to improve my game and deserve the success that I desire? 2) What shortcuts am I attempting to take right now by being lazy or impatient, or from procrastination? 3) What would my life look like if every customer I've ever had was a repeat customer? What do I need to do to keep all of these customers? 4) If I were fired and a new leader came into my business today, what decision or change would he or she immediately make? Today's challenge: Set aside some thinking time this week to contemplate these questions, or come up with a list of your own questions. Additionally, think about what questions you could ask yourself that help you in your personal world. Book mentioned: The Road Less Stupid Subscribe to our daily texts! Ep 38Real Goals vs Stated Goals

Brian breaks down the stated goals and real goals, and why understanding the difference between the two is crucial to achieving the goals you set out. Stated goals are things we think we should be saying; the goal we think we need or the goal we say we want. These goals could be based on the environment we are in or influenced by our peer groups. A real goal is the level of action we are actually willing to take to achieve something. Brian shares why understanding the difference between stated vs real goals is important for individuals in leadership positions and how you can either help or hinder others in achieving their goals. Lastly, there are two things that drive a real goal: the 'why' - why do you want to achieve this goal - and the 'how' - how will you get there? Today's challenge: Where have you set goals in your world? Are these goals that you 'think' you should be setting based on your environment or current peer group (stated goals)?
