Higher Pay for Public Defenders? Part - 2

Bradley Jay fills in for Dan Rea. Does Massachusetts’ highest court have the authority to raise the salary of public defenders? That’s the question that is being argued in front of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court. Beginning in May, many court-appointed lawyers stopped taking new cases to try to force state lawmakers to raise their starting salaries of $65 an hour. There is concern over the number of criminal cases dismissed due to a lack of representation. Addressing the Auto Excise Tax in MA

A Massachusetts bill has been proposed that would triple the motor vehicle excise tax in MA. This would affect everyone in the state that owns a car. The Municipal Empowerment Act that Governor Healey's Administration supports would give municipalities the ability to raise local revenue through various tax means, which includes an increased automobile excise tax that would triple the current price from 2 1/2% to 7 1/2%. Gubernatorial candidate Brian Shortsleeve is against this measure and if elected claims he would not allow cities and towns the ability to increase the vehicle excise tax. Brian checked in to discuss it with Dan.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Government Shutdown Nearing an End? Part 2

Late Sunday evening, the Senate voted 60-40 to advance legislation to end the longest government shutdown. Eight Democrats joined most Senate Republicans to advance the bill. The majority of Senate Democrats opposed moving forward with the deal because it does not address the health care tax credits, which has been their main arguing point throughout the shutdown fight. The timing of final passage of the revised package remains unclear as the legislation still needs a final Senate vote and House approval. Many health experts say that freedom of expression of oneself is good for public health and personal wellbeing.
