What Fully On-Chain Games Mean for Gamers & Developers

Amitt Mahajan, co-creator of cultural icon and Internet treasure Farmville, has been working at the intersection of gaming and technology for his entire career. Now, Amitt has set his sights on web3, and more specifically, building true fully on-chain “forever games” and the technical tools to power them, in order to facilitate autonomous worlds, ensure game longevity, and create a more immersive player experience. His company, Proof of Play, recently announced a $33 million seed round led by a16z, as well as the Free-to-Play release of their first game, Pirate Nation, a fully on-chain pirate-themed RPG. Amitt joins your host, Niko Vuori, to talk about how the blockchain is like the digital version of cave drawings, allowing digital art to last forever. He also covers why gamers and developers should care about fully on-chain games, why he chose Ethereum + Arbitrum Nova as his tech stack, and how much harder it is to build games without centralized servers. Driving ROI with Data Analysis – Part 1

Together with Dive, one of Naavik's Open Gaming Research Initiative partners, we’re exploring the topic of data and games through a limited podcast series called the “Data Corner”.Today’s episode is about “Driving ROI with Data Analysis” — a broad topic that everyone understands is valuable but most don't know how to effectively engineer into their game studios. After all, ROI from data analysis goes beyond simply analyzing the data and also covers the entire activity funnel. For example, it's not ROI-effective when product teams don't know how to talk to data teams or when data teams don't know how to showcase results to marketing teams. ROI-effectiveness also can't happen if budgets aren’t allocated properly or if the proper data tooling doesn't exist across various teams. It's a big topic! So we decided to split this conversation into two parts. Today, in part 1, we explore various parts of the data analysis value chain with Elad Levy, founder and CEO of Dive, Tammy Levy, Chief Games Officer at Captain.tv, and host Abhimanyu Kumar, co-founder of Naavik.Make sure to send your thoughts, feedback, and questions to [email protected], so that we can address it all later in this limited series. We’d also like to thank Dive for making this episode possible! Surveying the Web3 Gaming Landscape

In 2011, Sean Ryan was hired to build out Facebook’s nascent gaming business just as Zynga and other social gaming start-ups were gaining traction on the platform. A decade later, Sean’s responsibilities eventually encompassed numerous other initiatives, including Facebook’s forays into blockchain. In this episode, Sean explains why he felt compelled to leave Facebook to start his own web3 gaming company, why he believes the notion of digital ownership is as big of a watershed moment as free-to-play mobile or the move from physical to digital, who he thinks will prevail in the blockchain wars, and how he sees the web3 ecosystem evolving. To learn more, make sure to visit https://aqua.xyz. AI x Games: What’s the Path Forward?

AI is all the rage right now, but unless you’re in the thick of it, it can be hard to make perfect sense of what’s possible today and where we’re headed. Will AI be a sustaining or disruptive innovation for the gaming industry? Why is the "open source vs. closed source" conversation so important? How will business models change as technology evolves? What role will humans play as AI takes over more workflows? What’s overhyped right now?To help navigate all of these questions, Aaron Bush is joined by Ilya Gelfenbeyn, co-founder and CEO of Inworld AI (the pioneers of AI NPCs), and George Ng, co-founder and CTO of GGWP (AI-driven moderation solutions). Both guests are also serial entrepreneurs, so we also discuss their current businesses as well as explore lessons learned over time. This episode is brought to you by CleverTap Gaming, the all-in-one platform for creating personalized player experiences. What Can the Bitcoin Lightning Network Do For Web3 Gaming?

Just about every game that integrates blockchain technology in some way is either on Ethereum, most likely via a Layer 2 solution such as Polygon or Immutable X, or is building on a more scalable but less decentralized Layer 1 chain such as Solana or Binance Smart Chain. Bitcoin, the granddaddy of blockchains, has not attracted much attention from game developers, and for good reason — on-chain transactions on Bitcoin are very, very slow. This is where the Bitcoin Lightning Network comes in. Originally conceived in 2015, the Lightning Network is designed to overcome the scalability issues inherent with Bitcoin by opening up a series of bidirectional payment channels without delegating custody of funds. In this episode, host Niko Vuori talks with Ben Cousens, the chief strategy officer at Bitcoin Lightning Network payment solutions provider Zebedee, about what the technology can offer game developers. The Gaming Industry’s Data Nightmare

Together with Dive, one of our Open Gaming Research Initiative partners, we’re exploring the topic of data and games through a limited podcast series called "The Data Corner." Today’s episode covers the topic of “the data nightmare that the gaming industry faces." Games, in general, generate tons of player data every day, and within that data exists a ton of harvestable insight that can be used to drive better decision-making so as to drive more revenue and eventually drive better game-making. But such large data pools also require time, money, and people to analyze and harvest from it, and that keeps many game developers from spending their resources on data analysis to help them make better games. This tension is at the heart of the data nightmare the gaming industry faces today, and this conversation with Elad Levy, founder and CEO of Dive, is focused on unpacking that tension a bit more. It is a wide-ranging conversation that covers what the nightmare is all about, why the gaming industry is unique in facing it versus other industries, how game developers should navigate the problem, what developers are leaving on the table if they don’t navigate the problem and more.So hope you enjoy episode #1 of the Data Corner, and do send me, host Abhimanyu Kumar, your thoughts, feedback, and questions so that I can address it all as I continue to build out this limited series. This episode is brought to you by Nexus. More or Less: Gaming Podcasts & Blogs

There are more than 3 billion gamers in the world, but the number of gaming professionals interested in business and development content pales in comparison, with approximately 300,000 people employed in the U.S. games business, according to market researcher IBIS World. Is it possible to build a profitable enterprise off this type of organization, and if so, how and through what revenue streams? Building a Sustainable Web3 Game With Sorare

Most Web3 game economies, even the most successful ones from the earliest days of the genre, have struggled in recent quarters, in part due to fundamentally unsustainable economics / tokenomics. But in this episode, we’re discussing one of the more notable exceptions: the France-based fantasy sports game Sorare. Launched on Ethereum in 2019, the game generated nearly $350 million in secondary market volume in 2022, and almost $90 million for the first 5 months of 2023. In this episode, your host, Niko Vuori, talks to Sorare’s Head of Growth, Brian O’Hagan, about how Sorare maintains a “sustainable” economy, how they secured the crucial initial licenses for football (soccer), why they chose not to launch their own token, expanding into additional sports to tap into the US market, and what’s next for the company, among many other topics. Niko is joined by Naavik contributor Devin Becker, who covered Sorare in the June 22, 2023 issue of the Naavik Digest. 5 Reflections Since Founding Naavik

Today’s episode is a bit different. One of our interviews fell through, but instead of skipping an episode Naavik’s co-founder and podcast host, Aaron Bush, decided to pick up the mic and roll solo. Aaron discusses five reflections since founding Naavik – about leadership, learning from other industries, what makes the games industry special, and where we are going next. We also want to learn about what your major reflections have been since joining the games industry, no matter what your tenure is. Send us a note to [email protected] and we’d be thrilled to showcase your insights in a future episode. As always, if you like the episode, you can help others find us by leaving a rating or review! How Yuga Labs is Defining the Future of Web3 Gaming

Q: Where does an 800-pound ape get its game on? A: Anywhere it wants to. Having launched some of the biggest NFT collections (including of course Bored Ape Yacht Club), acquired some of the biggest NFT collections (including CryptoPunks and Meebits), raised $450 million from a16z and broken all kinds of web3 records since inception, Yuga is ready to get its game on. It now wants to show the world what web3 gaming can really be, having hired some of the biggest names from Epic Games, Activision Blizzard and Scopely, among others, to senior leadership roles. Your host, Niko Vuori, speaks with Spencer Tucker, Chief Gaming Officer at Yuga Labs, about Yuga’s gaming ambitions, what “the metaverse” means to Yuga, how passionate the Bored Ape community really is and how to crowdsource growth through networking externalities with zero UA spend. Oh, and Jimmy the Monkey with the key stuck up you-know-where in Dookey Dash makes a reappearance as well.
