Ep 115Michael Redlick: “A Controversial Marriage” | MURDERISH Ep. 115

E

Danielle Drohan was in her early twenties when she married a man more than 20 years older. The age gap wasn't the unusual part, though. Her husband, Michael Redlick, had previously been her stepfather. Against all odds, their controversial and rocky marriage lasted nearly two decades. It would all come to a grinding halt on January 11, 2019. That night, after a vicious argument, Michael was found dead in their million-dollar riverfront home. Was this deadly event the culmination of years of abuse? Or did something more sinister play a role in Michael’s death? When a verdict was handed down, people on both sides of the tragedy were left in shock. Check us out: Visit Murderish.com for more info about the show and Creator/Host, Jami. Ep 114Michael Donald: “A Mother’s Fight to Take Down the KKK” | MURDERISH Ep. 114

E

In March of 1981, Michael Donald became the latest victim in America’s history of racial violence. The young Black man was beaten, killed, and lynched by two members of the local Ku Klux Klan in his hometown of Mobile, Alabama, for nothing more than crossing their path. The resulting murder investigation triggered his mother, Beulah Mae Donald, to sue the state Klan into oblivion. A small comfort for the victim of America’s last recorded lynching and his family. Ep 113Alexander Urtula: “The Power of Words” | MURDERISH Ep. 113

E

In 2015, 17-year-old Michelle Carter was indicted on charges connected to the suicide of her 18-year-old boyfriend, Conrad Roy Jr III. In a controversial 2017 trial, a Taunton, Massachusetts jury found her guilty of involuntary manslaughter. A similar case occurred in May 2019, though it received much less publicity. Boston College students Inyoung You and her boyfriend Alexander Urtula had been dating for 18 months when he died by suicide. An investigation would uncover an abundance of abusive text messages from Inyoung in the months leading up to Alexander’s death. The Carter and You cases involved problematic text messages that many argue are what drove both victims in these cases to end their lives. But where does free will end and the power of suggestion take over? Is it possible to brainwash someone into ending their own life? Let’s see if we get any closer to answers as we explore Alexander Urtula’s case in this episode of MURDERISH. Check us out: Visit Murderish.com for more info about the show and Creator/Host, Jami. Ep 111Lester Bower Jr: “Controversial Execution”丨MURDERISH Ep. 111

E

The American Justice System was created, in part, to ensure that all Americans get fair and impartial administration of justice. But, the system is by no means perfect and sometimes the wrong person is convicted of a serious crime. But what happens when a person is sentenced to death and years later, new evidence is brought to light that casts doubt on their guilt? Lester Bower Jr. maintained his innocence for decades and then, new witnesses came forward and backed up Bower’s claim of innocence. Would this be enough to save him from being executed? Ep 110Jill & Kirstie Foster: Familicide丨MURDERISH Ep. 110

E

When a family’s financial situation drastically improves, temptation can lurk around every corner. And sometimes, outward appearances completely obscure a less glamorous reality. Chris Foster of Lancashire, England had known a working-class lifestyle for most of his adulthood. In 1997, though, fortune suddenly smiled upon him. At 39 years old, following a monumental tragedy, Foster invented and patented a product that would revolutionize the global oil and gas industries. In a darkly ironic twist, oil would play a major role in the unthinkable crimes he committed in 2008. His crimes shocked all of Britain and made headlines, as far as Australia, for years to come. Introducing Dirty Money Moves: Women in White Collar Crime

Dirty Money Moves: Women in White Collar Crime deep dives into cases involving a more rare type of criminal, women who commit financial crimes. In season one, host Jami Rice of MURDERISH podcast takes listeners on a journey to investigate Mary Carole McDonnell, a self-proclaimed heiress and the CEO of a TV production company based in Los Angeles. In 2018, with help from her high-profile Hollywood attorney, Mary Carole secured a $15 million loan with Banc of California. When the first payment came due, the heiress couldn’t be reached. She had allegedly skipped town and bank representatives quickly learned that they’d likely never see that money again. Before the FBI could question the heiress‘s controversial attorney about his potential role in the alleged bank fraud, he died suddenly under bizarre circumstances. And a probe into the attorney’s background revealed that he had ties to one of America’s most notorious scandals, the one involving pop icon Michael Jackson. A dive into Mary Carole’s background revealed that the alleged multi-million dollar scam against Banc of California wasn't her first rodeo. The heiress had a long history of financial misconduct. But why would a seemingly successful CEO and heiress to a fortune build a side hustle that included alleged scams against even those who were close to her? In season one of Dirty Money Moves: Women in White Collar Crime we expose the REAL Mary Carole McDonnell and all of the complex lies she told for decades, including a sensationalized tale about the kidnap for ransom murder plot involving her little sister. We unravel how Mary Carole managed to hustle numerous intelligent people and sophisticated businesses out of roughly $30 million dollars, and whether the female hustler had help along the way. Ep 107Nicole Montalvo: “Like Father, Like Son”丨MURDERISH Ep. 107

E

When feelings for another person run deep, people are often inclined to see the best in that person. It’s not uncommon for unsettling behavior to be excused rather than seeing it as a warning sign and acting on it. But this idealism can put someone in harm’s way without them realizing it until it’s much too late. When Nicole Montalvo went missing in October 2019, investigators quickly learned that a lot was going on in her personal life and sadly, her circumstances were not all that unusual. Nicole’s disturbing murder led to three arrests and one trial. Ep 104Vincent Chin: “Modern Day Lynching” | MURDERISH Ep. 104

E

Since the 1880s, immigrants from all over the globe have arrived in the United States hoping to attain a better quality of life, the American Dream. Like so many immigrants before them, Lily and Ben Chin wanted their son Vincent to have more opportunities than he may have had in their native China. In the 1970s and 1980s, however, tensions were high between Japanese and American automobile manufacturers, and that discord extended beyond the auto manufacturing plants. It was at this time that 27-year-old Vincent Chin found himself in peril on the streets of Motor City. His story reminds us why this landmark case is still relevant more than 40 years later. When an alternative medicine doctor was found bludgeoned to death in her Bonita Springs, Florida home in the summer of 2015, friends and neighbors worried a burglar was on the loose, looking for his next random victim. Detectives with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office told the public that Dr. Teresa Sievers had been bashed in the back of the head after returning home early from a trip with her husband and two daughters. An online sleuth group wondered if Dr. Sievers’s death was connected to that of several other alternative medicine doctors throughout the country who had also died under mysterious circumstances in recent months. The slain doctor’s husband, Mark, had an airtight alibi. Who killed Dr. Sievers and why? The disturbing details of her murder would be revealed in time, and the answers rocked the community. Ep 101Hae Min Lee: Part 2 | MURDERISH Ep. 101

E

In Part 1 of this case, we left off with the prosecution concluding their case at Adnan’s second trial. The State called numerous witnesses to testify. One of the most notable was Abe Warnowitz, an AT&T Engineer who testified regarding cell phone calls made from and received on Adnan’s cell phone, which was in Jay’s possession on the day Hae went missing. The jury also heard from the State’s star witness, Jay Wilds, who testified that Adnan told him he killed Hae and convinced him to help bury her body. Though some of the calls Jay testified about seemed to show up in the right place on Adnan’s cell phone call log, some of his sworn statements were contradicted by other witnesses' testimony as well as Jay’s own statements to law enforcement. As the defense began presenting their case at trial, everyone likely believed that this case was nearing its end. The trial would come to an end soon, but this case was far from over. In time, the world would come to know Hae Min Lee and Adnan Syed’s names as the case was highlighted on a wildly successful podcast, called Serial. After Serial was released, new information came to light that called into question numerous aspects of the case, from potential missteps or misconduct in the investigation, to possible mistakes and wrongdoing on behalf of the defense and prosecution. Today, Hae Min Lee’s murder case is arguably one of most well-known and debated cases in modern history. Check us out: Visit Murderish.com for more info about the show and Creator/Host, Jami. Ep 100Hae Min Lee: Part 1 | MURDERISH Ep. 100

E

In January of 1999, an 18 year high school student mysteriously vanished after school. Four weeks later, her body was found in a shallow grave in a nearby wooded park. An arrest was made and the suspect was eventually convicted of her murder. When it happened, this tragic story barely made the local papers, let alone the national news. 14 years later, after becoming the subject of the most downloaded podcast on record, the case became an international phenomenon and one of the most talked about in modern history. It turned millions of people into armchair lawyers and detectives overnight, igniting the rise of the true crime genre as we know it today. Years after the trial, new evidence was uncovered calling into question the validity of the conviction. Through it all, the convicted party has always maintained his innocence. The victim’s family has likewise maintained that the right person was convicted and punished for killing their daughter. For many people, though, questions remain: Has the killer been brought to justice, or was someone wrongfully convicted? Is there another person law enforcement should have investigated further? Did the convicted killer’s accomplice even have anything to do with the crime? Did legal or law enforcement misconduct play a role in the case, or is everyone wasting their time fighting for justice when it has already been served? These are the questions, among many others, that keep this case top of mind for millions of people to this day. Check us out: Visit Murderish.com for more info about the show and Creator/Host, Jami. Ep 99Sarah Stern: “The Mysterious Box” | MURDERISH Ep. 099

E

Daydreaming about coming into a sudden windfall is probably something we’ve all done. We let our minds wander for a brief moment, thinking of all the things we’d accomplish if it happened, and how happy we would be having received such a rare treat. Who would you share the money with if it happened to you? Your family, a stranger in need …your best friend? It’s a happy thought, but sometimes the reality can be much darker because money also motivates some people to do terrible things. In this case, curiosity led to the opening of a mysterious box. From that point on, the clock was ticking …on someone’s life. Check us out: Visit Murderish.com for more info about the show and Creator/Host, Jami. Not long after they began dating, cracks in the relationship began to surface. Soon, people close to the couple observed disturbing behavior that made them very uncomfortable. When the woman went missing, some people quickly pointed the finger at her husband. Ep 92Mason Scott: “Inconvenient Son” | MURDERISH Ep. 092

E

In the early morning hours of August 12, 2008, Christie Scott was home alone with her children. Her husband was out of town. After putting her two sons to bed, Christie finished the movie she was watching. Later, she was awakened out of a dead sleep quickly realizing that something was wrong. Her house was on fire. Christie whisked her youngest son out of the burning house, but sadly her 6-year-old son was still inside. On the surface, it seemed that time wasn’t on Christie’s side and she had to make a choice that no parent ever wants to make. However, as investigators dug their heels into the case a theory arose that painted Christie as a murderer ...a mother who no longer wanted her inconvenient son. Ep 91Kat West: Date Night Murder or Accident? | MURDERISH Ep. 091

E

On January 12, 2018, 47-year old Jeff West and his 42-year-old wife Kat enjoyed a date night in their small Alabama city. It would prove to be an unforgettable evening, not from all the drinking and dining but because Kat wouldn’t live to see the next sunrise. Initially, it was unknown whether Kat’s death was a tragic accident or something malicious. Investigators learned that what seemed like a cut-and-dry case, would eventually amount to a maze of uncertainty. Although a jury reached a verdict in this case, doubt still exists about their decision. Check us out: Visit Murderish.com for more info about the show and Creator/Host, Jami. Introducing: Suspect

A big Halloween party at an apartment complex in Redmond, Washington. Themed rooms and costumed partygoers. But by the end of the party, one of the hosts is dead. The police look to the partiers as the prime suspects: was it the guy in the devil mask, the bank robber, the construction worker? As investigators comb through forensic evidence, witness testimony, DNA, and even consult with a psychic, they zero in on one suspect in particular. But for what reason? Host and reporter Matthew Shaer (Over My Dead Body) returns to the scene of the crime, speaks with everyone about a night that still haunts them years later. It’s a series about race and policing, mislaid justice, cutting-edge science, and the kinds of weighty choices that cops and prosecutors make every day -- choices that, once made, are difficult to reverse. Bianca Devins, “If I Can’t Have you …” | MURDERISH Ep. 088

E

Social media is a double-edged sword. It connects us to people we likely would have never encountered and allows us to stay in touch with family and friends no matter where they live. As much as social media can be a tool to stay connected in a positive way, the barrier between people on social media can also be used as a way to cloak someone’s true nature. In the case, we’re examining in this episode, both positive and negative aspects of social media were applied. The victim found refuge online and used social media as an outlet where she could explore her identity as she journeyed into adulthood. But the sanctuary she found in online communities would shift in July of 2019, with social media serving as a catalyst for unspeakable peril. Oftentimes, divorces are messy. Hurt feelings, large sums of money, and decisions regarding custody of children only add to the stress that separation can bring. Introducing: The Devil Within

It’s a case that has haunted Jefferson Township, New Jersey, for more than 30 years. On a snowy January night, 14-year-old Tommy Sullivan did the unthinkable: he murdered his mother in cold blood, set fire to their house, and then took his own life. Out of the flames of this horrible tragedy, investigations revealed that Tommy was, himself, a part of a Satanic Cult, sparking a nationwide hysteria now known as the “Satanic Panic” This monumental moment in American culture led to communities nationwide enforcing draconian measures to protect their children from what they perceived to be the devil’s influence. Even the Catholic church was convinced this was a case of demonic possession. On the new podcast, THE DEVIL WITHIN, the truth of the grisly murder is finally revealed. Did Tommy act alone? Did he really commit suicide? Is his cult still in power? THE DEVIL WITHIN finally sheds light on questions left unanswered for decades... Introducing - Confronting: Columbine

The events of April 20th, 1999 shaped our nation and altered the American narrative. One of America’s deadliest school shootings took place in a small town in Colorado, leaving thirteen dead and another twenty-one severely injured. And it was all broadcast over national tv for the nation to see. The second season of Confronting takes on one of the most prolific tragedies in American history: the Columbine High School massacre. It was a devastating example of how easily a place of learning, familiarity, and peace can descend into a war zone of chaos in a moment, the teenagers present that day are now adults who bear the mental and physical scars of the carnage they lived through. Amy Over, a Columbine survivor who is still living with its aftermath and raising her own children in its shadow, confronts many of the realities, questions, and myths that surround the massacre to this day. Amy, through her own experience and by speaking with survivors, investigators, classmates, reporters on the scene, and other important voices, brings a first-person account of the physical, emotional, and spiritual journey that comes along with confronting the worst day of her life. “Whitey Bulger: Robin Hood Mob Boss”丨MURDERISH Ep. 079

E

In one of the most egregious law enforcement scandals of the last century, the U.S. Government helped to cultivate and empower one of the most notorious murderers of our time. A man who was simultaneously hailed as both a savior and a devil, a protector and an oppressor, James “Whitey” Bulger’s story is complex and almost unbelievable. How did just another poor South Boston hoodlum rise to be the King of the Irish Mob, and reign without punishment for 20 years as the bodies piled up around him? How did he manipulate and stay one step ahead of law enforcement even after becoming a fugitive on the FBI’s most-wanted list, second only to Osama Bin Laden? Whitey Bulger wasn’t your average gangster, but his genius was facilitated by equally criminal men at every level of law enforcement. With their help, Whitey rose to power using violence, money, intelligence, and charisma. Whether it was karma, poetic justice, or a government setup, Whitey met his end violently and in a manner reminiscent of the countless murders he so easily committed. Join me as I walk you through the complex case of Mob Boss James “Whitey” Bulger. Check us out: Visit Murderish.com for more info about the show and Creator/Host, Jami.
