When a 25 year old Jessica McCormack and her three young daughters disappeared suddenly in July of 2019, Jessica’s closest friends thought she was taking time away to decompress. November 12, 2013 probably started out like any other for 78-year-old Joe Gatto, who lived in a modest home in Silver Lake, California. Although Joe was retired, he was far from inactive. When Daisy De La O was fatally stabbed in her own community, her friends and family quickly honed in on a fairly obvious suspect. Her case, however, garnered no leads or public attention ..until it was posted on TikTok. It was then that true crime social media jumped in to help. Thanks to the activity on social media about Daisy’s case, a suspect would eventually be identified but not before he slipped out of the area undetected. In March of 1981, Michael Donald became the latest victim in America’s history of racial violence. The young Black man was beaten, killed, and lynched by two members of the local Ku Klux Klan in his hometown of Mobile, Alabama, for nothing more than crossing their path. In 2015, 17-year-old Michelle Carter was indicted on charges connected to the suicide of her 18-year-old boyfriend, Conrad Roy Jr III. In a controversial 2017 trial, a Taunton, Massachusetts jury found her guilty of involuntary manslaughter. A similar case occurred in May 2019, though it received much less publicity. Boston College students Inyoung You and her boyfriend Alexander Urtula had been dating for 18 months when he died by suicide. An investigation would uncover an abundance of abusive text messages from Inyoung in the months leading up to Alexander’s death. The Carter and You cases involved problematic text messages that many argue are what drove both victims in these cases to end their lives. On the evening of January 4th, 2019 in San Antonio Texas, a 911 came in from a man saying that someone had stolen his car with his infant son inside. The man, Chris Davila, said he’d pulled into the parking lot of a Food Mart. He left the car engine running and went inside to get a bottle of water. When he came out, his vehicle and his son were gone. Sadly, the baby boy’s body was found buried under a bridge. Three people were arrested and the community was shocked to learn who the suspects were. Even more shocking, was that none of them were charged with murder. When an alternative medicine doctor was found bludgeoned to death in her Bonita Springs, Florida home in the summer of 2015, friends and neighbors worried a burglar was on the loose, looking for his next random victim. Detectives with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office told the public that Dr. Teresa Sievers had been bashed in the back of the head after returning home early from a trip with her husband and two daughters. In Part 1 of this case, we left off with the prosecution concluding their case at Adnan’s second trial. The State called numerous witnesses to testify. One of the most notable was Abe Warnowitz, an AT&T Engineer who testified regarding cell phone calls made from and received on Adnan’s cell phone, which was in Jay’s possession on the day Hae went missing. The jury also heard from the State’s star witness, Jay Wilds, who testified that Adnan told him he killed Hae and convinced him to help bury her body. Though some of the calls Jay testified about seemed to show up in the right place on Adnan’s cell phone call log, some of his sworn statements were contradicted by other witnesses' testimony as well as Jay’s own statements to law enforcement. As the defense began presenting their case at trial, everyone likely believed that this case was nearing its end. The trial would come to an end soon, but this case was far from over. In time, the world would come to know Hae Min Lee and Adnan Syed’s names as the case was highlighted on a wildly successful podcast, called Serial. After Serial was released, new information came to light that called into question numerous aspects of the case, from potential missteps or misconduct in the investigation, to possible mistakes and wrongdoing on behalf of the defense and prosecution. In January of 1999, an 18 year high school student mysteriously vanished after school. Four weeks later, her body was found in a shallow grave in a nearby wooded park. An arrest was made and the suspect was eventually convicted of her murder. Late in the evening on Friday, January 8, 1993, the employees in one particular restaurant in Palatine Chicago didn’t know at the time that they would not be going home that night. Hours after these workers began their closing routine, all seven of their bodies would be discovered inside of Brown’s Chicken, a popular restaurant chain. Upon entering the bloody scene, officer Ron Conley dispatched backup saying “Five in the cooler.” This tragedy was the worst mass murder in the Chicago area since 1966 when Richard Speck murdered eight student nurses in their dorm.
