A character actor who appeared in over 100 films and TV shows between the early 60s and late 80s, Robert Sorrells made a living playing bit parts in big productions: classics like Gunsmoke, Bonanza, The Twilight Zone. No matter the plot, the roles typically ended the same for Sorrells―with his character either firing a bullet, or taking one himself. His early filmography reads like an advertisement for the NRA: Gunfight in Abilene, Mosby’s Marauders, Death of a Gunfighter, The Ride to Hangman’s Tree. In a disturbing case of life imitating art, Sorrells, at the age of 74, gunned down two men at a bar near his home in Simi Valley, California, killing one and badly wounding the other. His victim: A 45-year-old painting contractor and father of one. The shocking July 2004 murder shined a spotlight on the psychology of aging actors, and begged the question: did a lifetime of being around fake movie violence make Sorrells more inclined to commit the real-life kind? Or, were the characters he portrayed all those years on film closer to reality than those around him realized? We're bringing back a very important episode about first grader Gabriel Fernandez. His mother, Pearl Fernandez, was an unfit parent, completely detached from her children …especially Gabriel. Plain and simple, she despised her young son and put him through years of neglect and abuse. Pearl’s boyfriend took part in the abuse …until it escalated to a point at which young Gabriel’s body had sustained all it could take. There were multiple cries for help, multiple red flags and blatant signs, and multiple reports of abuse. Still, young Gabriel lost his life at the hands of people who should have loved and protected him. Gabriel was murdered, and it could have been prevented. This is part of Gabriel’s story. Kelsey Turner was the kind of woman who drew people in without trying. Her bleach-blonde hair and hourglass figure made her a natural model. In a sea of beautiful California women, though, modeling gigs weren’t plentiful enough to support her expensive tastes. Like many young women nowadays, she turned to online sites to sell amateur photos. By doing so, Kelsey caught the attention of many admirers. Among them was prominent psychiatrist Dr. Thomas Burchard. Despite pushing 70, he was infatuated with 25-year-old Kelsey and offered her ample financial perks to keep her happy. But the doctor’s attraction for Kelsey began to seriously cloud his judgment. It turned out his giving, sympathetic nature only made him more vulnerable to dangerous predators. When a 25 year old Jessica McCormack and her three young daughters disappeared suddenly in July of 2019, Jessica’s closest friends thought she was taking time away to decompress. They had conversations with her on Facebook while she was gone, but it soon became clear that the person on Facebook was just an imposter who’d hacked into Jessica’s account. When Daisy De La O was fatally stabbed in her own community, her friends and family quickly honed in on a fairly obvious suspect. Her case, however, garnered no leads or public attention ..until it was posted on TikTok. It was then that true crime social media jumped in to help. Thanks to the activity on social media about Daisy’s case, a suspect would eventually be identified but not before he slipped out of the area undetected. It has been said that social media can cause more harm than good for serious crime cases, but in Daisy’s case the posts on social media propelled it to a much larger audience and ultimately led to an arrest. In March of 1981, Michael Donald became the latest victim in America’s history of racial violence. The young Black man was beaten, killed, and lynched by two members of the local Ku Klux Klan in his hometown of Mobile, Alabama, for nothing more than crossing their path. In 2015, 17-year-old Michelle Carter was indicted on charges connected to the suicide of her 18-year-old boyfriend, Conrad Roy Jr III. In a controversial 2017 trial, a Taunton, Massachusetts jury found her guilty of involuntary manslaughter. A similar case occurred in May 2019, though it received much less publicity. Boston College students Inyoung You and her boyfriend Alexander Urtula had been dating for 18 months when he died by suicide. An investigation would uncover an abundance of abusive text messages from Inyoung in the months leading up to Alexander’s death. The Carter and You cases involved problematic text messages that many argue are what drove both victims in these cases to end their lives. On the evening of January 4th, 2019 in San Antonio Texas, a 911 came in from a man saying that someone had stolen his car with his infant son inside. The man, Chris Davila, said he’d pulled into the parking lot of a Food Mart. He left the car engine running and went inside to get a bottle of water. When he came out, his vehicle and his son were gone. Sadly, the baby boy’s body was found buried under a bridge. Three people were arrested and the community was shocked to learn who the suspects were. Even more shocking, was that none of them were charged with murder. In Part 1 of this case, we left off with the prosecution concluding their case at Adnan’s second trial. The State called numerous witnesses to testify. One of the most notable was Abe Warnowitz, an AT&T Engineer who testified regarding cell phone calls made from and received on Adnan’s cell phone, which was in Jay’s possession on the day Hae went missing. The jury also heard from the State’s star witness, Jay Wilds, who testified that Adnan told him he killed Hae and convinced him to help bury her body. Though some of the calls Jay testified about seemed to show up in the right place on Adnan’s cell phone call log, some of his sworn statements were contradicted by other witnesses' testimony as well as Jay’s own statements to law enforcement. As the defense began presenting their case at trial, everyone likely believed that this case was nearing its end. The trial would come to an end soon, but this case was far from over. In time, the world would come to know Hae Min Lee and Adnan Syed’s names as the case was highlighted on a wildly successful podcast, called Serial. After Serial was released, new information came to light that called into question numerous aspects of the case, from potential missteps or misconduct in the investigation, to possible mistakes and wrongdoing on behalf of the defense and prosecution. In January of 1999, an 18 year high school student mysteriously vanished after school. Four weeks later, her body was found in a shallow grave in a nearby wooded park. An arrest was made and the suspect was eventually convicted of her murder. On January 12, 2018, 47-year old Jeff West and his 42-year-old wife Kat enjoyed a date night in their small Alabama city.
