On July 12, 2014 the body of 18-year-old Conrad Roy was discovered inside of his pickup truck. The teenager, who had a history of depression, died by suicide. At first, detectives had no reason to suspect foul play in Conrad's death, but they confiscated his cell phone anyway. After extracting data, detectives found thousands of text messages between Conrad and his girlfriend, 17-year-old Michelle Carter. The problem was that Michelle had been encouraging Conrad to kill himself in the weeks, days and minutes leading up to his death. The tragic incident then turned into a homicide investigation with Michelle Carter as the primary target. The Commonwealth v. Michelle Carter case was the first of its kind in that the defendant was being charged with manslaughter due to the virtual presence she had during Conrad's death. When someone gets involved in the drug trade, violence usually isn’t far behind. It’s a dangerous path to tread where survival can hinge almost entirely upon alliances. If you piss off the wrong person, you might pay with your life. In the late 1980s, Missouri native Darrell Mease encountered an opportunity he couldn’t turn down. The 42-year-old carpenter was hired by Lloyd Lawrence, who happened to be a kingpin in a local methamphetamine ring. Instead of considering the danger he might face, Mease was blinded by dollar signs. This chance encounter set Mease’s life on a deeply violent trajectory. It would escalate into an extreme act of revenge outside a serene cabin in the Ozark mountains where an entire family would be murdered. The triple homicide, known as the “Halloween Massacre,” occurred in Pasadena, California in 1993. As rare as violent crimes are in Pasadena, the Halloween Massacre was the second triple homicide in the City in less than a three-year time span. On Friday, March 22, 1991, at about 2:30 in the morning, Pasadena police received a call asking them to do a welfare check at a posh home located on the 1300th block of Fairlawn Way. Officers arrived about 18 minutes later to find three deceased teenage girls. The brutal crime scene would haunt the lead detective until his dying day. On a warm Southern California night in 2018, 23-year-old Vini Oliveira arrived home from working the late shift. In November of 1983, a mother and her three children were found “hacked to death” in their Bloomington, Illinois family home. The prime suspect was the husband and father of the victims, David Hendricks. The prosecution would have you believe that David’s religion and desire to pursue other women were motives for the murders. In the spring of 1985, 78-year-old grandmother and retired Bible study teacher Ruth Pelke was found brutally stabbed in her Gary, Indiana home. For years leading up to the tragedy, her family had tried to convince her to move out of a neighborhood that had grown increasingly unsafe. But this was her home. The elderly white woman, who chose to see the best in everyone, believed her religious faith would keep her out of harm’s way. When Daisy De La O was fatally stabbed in her own community, her friends and family quickly honed in on a fairly obvious suspect. Danielle Drohan was in her early twenties when she married a man more than 20 years older. The age gap wasn't the unusual part, though. Just after 4 AM on July 8, 2015, a call came into Hampton County emergency dispatch. A driver spotted a body in the center of a remote stretch of highway known as Sandy Run Road. The body belonged to 19-year-old Stephen Smith, a nursing student at nearby Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College. There was nothing to suggest a vehicle had been involved in Stephen’s death, yet a hit and run would become the sheriff’s department’s official determination. The story didn’t sit well with Stephen’s friends, his family, or the South Carolina Highway Patrol. The circumstances begged several questions: Why would Hampton County make such a rush to judgment regarding the cause of death? Who were they trying to protect? And who was responsible for killing Stephen Smith? It would take eight years, and the widely publicized capital murder trial of Alex Murdaugh, for South Carolina authorities to admit that what happened that night in Lowcountry was no traffic accident, it was a homicide that many believe could be tied to the Murdaughs, Hampton County’s Royal Family. On the morning of May 26, 1990, Marlene Warren was finishing breakfast with her son and his friends when she heard a knock on their front door. On the early morning of November 13, 2022, four University of Idaho students settled down in their beds after a night out. A character actor who appeared in over 100 films and TV shows between the early 60s and late 80s, Robert Sorrells made a living playing bit parts in big productions: classics like Gunsmoke, Bonanza, The Twilight Zone. No matter the plot, the roles typically ended the same for Sorrells―with his character either firing a bullet, or taking one himself. His early filmography reads like an advertisement for the NRA: Gunfight in Abilene, Mosby’s Marauders, Death of a Gunfighter, The Ride to Hangman’s Tree. In a disturbing case of life imitating art, Sorrells, at the age of 74, gunned down two men at a bar near his home in Simi Valley, California, killing one and badly wounding the other. His victim: A 45-year-old painting contractor and father of one. The shocking July 2004 murder shined a spotlight on the psychology of aging actors, and begged the question: did a lifetime of being around fake movie violence make Sorrells more inclined to commit the real-life kind? Some might say New Orleans native Jill Coit collected husbands as a hobby. Between 1961 and 1992, she was married 11 times to 9 different men. When a 25 year old Jessica McCormack and her three young daughters disappeared suddenly in July of 2019, Jessica’s closest friends thought she was taking time away to decompress. They had conversations with her on Facebook while she was gone, but it soon became clear that the person on Facebook was just an imposter who’d hacked into Jessica’s account. Several weeks later, Jessica’s body was found on a highway in the Ozarks after apparently falling out of a suitcase that she’d been stuffed into. When Daisy De La O was fatally stabbed in her own community, her friends and family quickly honed in on a fairly obvious suspect. Her case, however, garnered no leads or public attention ..until it was posted on TikTok. It was then that true crime social media jumped in to help. Thanks to the activity on social media about Daisy’s case, a suspect would eventually be identified but not before he slipped out of the area undetected.
