Sue and Mark Petric: “A Deadly Game”丨MURDERISH Ep. 161
Some addictions aren’t yet completely understood, like video gaming addiction. There has long been controversy regarding whether games with violent content impact young influential minds. In October 2007, an Ohio clergyman and his wife were shot at close range in their own home. Mark and Sue Petric were adored by their community. No one anticipated their lives would be shattered by a senseless act of violence. The question at the forefront of this case is: were video games to blame for the shooter’s actions? In this episode of Serial Streamers Jami recaps the Showtime docuseries, Outcry. Jami gives listeners a solid Cliffs Notes version of the docuseries, and shares her own opinions on the horrific case that centers around high school football star Greg Kelley. Best of MURDERISH: E8 "Justin Hopper Murder"
In December of 1992, Justin Hopper, was making plans to move and get a fresh start. He was a high school senior at the time when he found himself in a dangerous situation. Justin had been selling drugs, and his instincts told him he needed to get out of that lifestyle before something bad happened. Justin was much more than a drug dealer, though. He was a kind-hearted, caring guy with a sentimental side. He was a football player who maintained good grades in school. Justin shared his plans to escape the lifestyle he was living with his close friend, Suzi. Sadly, Justin had no idea that he only had a few more weeks to live after sharing his plans with Suzi. Justin would never get the fresh start he desired because two gun-loving classmates had other plans for him. Let’s get social: Follow MURDERISH on Instagram & TikTok @MurderishPodcast. Honora Parker: “Deadly Diary Entries”丨MURDERISH Ep. 159
When two people meet, it’s exciting when there’s a mutual, instant affection for one another. It doesn’t always happen but when it does, it’s special. On rare occasions, however, a seemingly special human connection can actually be a bad thing, and in even more rare instances, it can lead to deadly consequences. The case we’re examining in this episode begs the question …would someone have died if two people had not had the opportunity to meet? A 1954 murder case out of New Zealand shocked the world due, in part, to the highly unlikely perpetrators. Honora Parker was savagely murdered on June 22, 1954. Though her murder case was easily solved, a striking revelation about the case didn’t fully come to light until 40 years later. Best of MURDERISH: E70 "Tricia Todd, Faith & Forgiveness"
In April of 2016, Air Force veteran and hospice nurse Tricia Todd mysteriously vanished from a tranquil beachside town. The 33-year-old mother of one was vivacious, compassionate, and well-liked in her community. No one could ever imagine she would abandon her young daughter, and the notion of someone wanting to harm her was equally unfathomable. Years of secrecy obscured a daunting truth, one that wouldn’t be fully unveiled until it was much too late. Let’s get social: Follow MURDERISH on Instagram & TikTok @MurderishPodcast. Mark & Jacob Iskander: “Will Privilege Sway a Socialite’s Punishment?“ | MURDERISH Ep. 158
On September 29, 2020, the Iskander family of six went out for an evening stroll in their Westlake Village neighborhood having no idea of the tragedy that lay ahead. On that same evening, wealthy socialite Rebecca Grossman was having drinks at a local Westlake Village restaurant with Royce Clayton and Scott Erickson, two former major league baseball players. After downing margaritas, Grossman and Erickson got into their expensive cars and headed toward Grossman’s nearby condo to hang out. At some point, the two decided to race each other through the residential neighborhood. At that exact moment, Nancy Iskander and her three sons were crossing the street. Before they could respond, Rebecca Grossman and Scott Erickson came racing toward them in their vehicles fueled by bravado tequila. One of the vehicles struck two of the Iskander boys, Mark and Jacob, killing them. Three and a half agonizing years later, Rebecca Grossman went on trial for Mark and Jacob’s murder. The headline-making trial resulted in a surprising verdict. Bad Surgeon: “Dr. MOCKiarini” | Serial Streamers TV Club
In this episode of Serial Streamers Jami recaps the docuseries, Bad Surgeon: Love Under the Knife. The 2023 Netflix docuseries highlights the story of Dr. Paolo Macchiarini, who is a world-renowned thoracic surgeon known for his work in regenerative medicine. For years, people believed Dr. Macchiarini was a trailblazer in the medical field and someone who worked tirelessly to save lives by transplanting lab-made organs into patients. What people didn’t know was that Dr. Macchiarini was extremely reckless in his approach and fully aware that his poor track record, coupled with faulty plastic organs, would very likely lead to death. Yet, the conman persisted. Jami gives listeners a solid Cliffs Notes version of the docuseries, and doesn’t hold back on how she feels about the man who she believes is a low-budget version of George Clooney’s ugly distant cousin, at best. The Molalla Forest Killer: “Forensics in the Forest”丨MURDERISH Ep. 157
In 1987, 25-year-old Oregon native Jennifer Smith was viciously murdered in a Denny’s parking lot. She had no idea how important her death would end up being. Jennifer’s determination to not go down without a fight led investigators to other victims whose loved ones may have never seen justice served had it not been for Jennifer. The person responsible for a string of senseless murders was consumed by an evil bloodlust. His true form was hidden beneath a deceptive veneer. Those in his life only saw what he wanted them to see. He was perceived as a loving family man and successful entrepreneur. Lurking beneath the surface, however, was the worst kind of predator. Someone who only experiences joy when others are in agony. It would be a long road to capture the man deemed the Molalla Forest Killer, and an even longer road to bring the serial killer to justice. Lover, Stalker, Killer: “Control That Knows No Bounds” | Serial Streamers TV Club
In this episode of Serial Streamers Jami is joined by Criminologists and fellow podcasters, Dr. Meghan Sacks and Dr. Amy Shlosberg. The women discuss the Netflix documentary: Lover, Stalker, Killer which details the murder case of Cari Farver and the woman who was responsible for her untimely death, Liz Golyar. Jami, Meghan, and Amy share their thoughts on this bizarre and tragic case from the perspective of being women who work in the True Crime space. Meghan and Amy’s commentary on this case is particularly insightful given they are both seasoned Criminologists and also because their podcast, Women & Crime, focuses on crimes involving female victims, perpetrators, and women who work in the criminal justice system. Toward the end of the discussion, Jami and Meghan are surprised to discover they both share a personal connection to one of the crimes committed by Liz Golyar and they each share their stories. Introducing: In the Blood
IN THE BLOOD is a new true crime miniseries, hosted by Ben McKenzie ("Southland", "Gotham") that asks why it took the state of Texas three trials to convict Ronald Trimboli, of a triple murder, if he was actually guilty? One of the first murder cases in America to use DNA, atechnology that was in its infancy at that time, this story would pit developing science against questions about lack of motive, a clear alibi, andat least one alternative suspect - that one of the victims explicitly told the police might try to murder him. A story about questions of innocence or guilt that stretches decades, from the crime in the 1980s, all the way through three trials, a DNA re-test, and potential new evidence discovered in just the last few years. Introducing The Devil Within: A Season in Hell
Check out The Devil Within: A Season in Hell. A series of random shootings, targeting young women with dark hair, causes panic in New York City. Twenty-four year old postal worker David Berkowitz, an admitted Satanist, would later claim his neighbors dog was possessed by a demon that was ordering him to kill. The police were powerless to help, so much so that they reached out to the Mafia for assistance in getting the killer, known as The Son of Sam, off the streets. American Nightmare: “Detective MusTURD Sucks” | Serial Streamers TV Club
In this episode of Serial Streamers, Jami recaps the Netflix docuseries American Nightmare. In 2015, a 9-1-1 call came in to the Vallejo PD. It was a man claiming that his girlfriend, Denise Huskins, had been abducted from his home by perpetrators wearing wet suits. The man, Aaron Quinn, laid out an elaborate story for detectives who did not believe him. The media dubbed it the “Gone Girl” case due to the similarities it had to the movie. Law enforcement accused Aaron and Denise of perpetrating a “Kidnapping Hoax” which may have caused them not to properly investigate the alleged crime. As it turned out, the stranger-than-fiction story was true and a suspect was identified. Jami provides a full recap of the docuseries and doesn’t hold back on her opinions of the authorities involved in this case. These were no ordinary thieves, and they were about to turn the streets of Los Angeles into a war zone, and in doing so, change American policing forever. The infamous shootout that ensued would leave two people dead, and numerous others badly injured. Follow Jami on Instagram & TikTok @JamiOnAir and join the Serial Streamers true crime TV club! The Prison Confessions of Gypsy Rose Blanchard | Serial Streamers TV Club
In this episode of Serial Streamers, Jami recaps the Lifetime docuseries The Prison Confessions of Gypsy Rose Blanchard. In 2016, Gypsy Rose was convicted of second degree murder for plotting and helping to carry out the murder of her mother, Clauddine “Dee Dee” Blanchard, who allegedly abused Gypsy Rose and suffered from munchausen syndrome by proxy. Gypsy Rose was paroled in January of 2024 and has been documenting her post-prison life on social media since then. Some people believe Gypsy Rose is a master manipulator who shouldn’t be celebrated, but others believe she committed murder in order to save herself from her abusive mother. Following Vicki’s savage murder in July of 1983, embarrassing secrets of the elite were exposed …along with society’s hatred of a woman who had the audacity to wear the scarlet letter. Grady Stiles Jr. “The Dark Side of Lobster Boy” | MURDERISH Ep. 153
Grady Stiles Jr. came from a long line of sideshow performers who had a genetic condition known as ectrodactyly. When this defect occurs in the womb, the middle digits of the hand and foot are missing and the remaining ones fuse into two parts. Grady was born with two-fingered hands that resembled lobster claws, and footless legs ending just below the knee. Like many of his relatives, Grady capitalized on his physical defects by appearing in traveling carnivals. It’s easy to imagine that a lifetime spent as a public spectacle could be emotionally taxing. But Grady had a coping mechanism: alcohol. For Grady, drinking heavily blurred out the pain of ridicule and rejection. Unfortunately, alcohol also made him incredibly mean and violent. This tendency toward violence would manifest into murder, with Grady being the perpetrator. Later, the man known as “Lobster Boy” would find himself on the other side of murder …falling victim to two bullets in the back of his head. Escaping Twin Flames: “Twin FLOPS Universe” | Serial Streamers TV Club
In this episode of Serial Streamers, Jami recaps the Netflix docuseries Escaping Twin Flames. Jami tries to suppress her rage but finds it difficult because one of the Twin Flames Universe leaders, Jeff, is a real piece of work. Twin Flames Universe is an organization that operates eerily similar to a cult in that members are pressured to disconnect from family, spend their hard earned money on classes that guarantee they’ll be matched with their “twin flame,” among other cult-like characteristics. In reality, the Twin Flames Universe guarantee is a twin FLOP because nobody seems to get what they were promised by alleged relationship scammers, Jeff and Shaleia Ayan (not their real names, of course). The TFU leaders also allegedly pressure members into certain gender-affirming surgeries that they may not have chosen for themselves. Jami shares all of her hot takes on this disturbing, cult-like organization and doesn’t hold back on her feelings about its leaders. Spoiler alert …she HATES them. Ashley Ellerin: “The Killer Next Door” | MURDERISH Ep. 152
Ashley Ellerin bid farewell to her father at Los Angeles International Airport in February 2001. That evening, the eye-catching 22-year-old fashion student had plans with handsome young Hollywood actor, Ashton Kutcher. The pair were headed to a Grammy Awards after-party at a popular nightclub on the Sunset Strip in LA. Kutcher, then 23, pulled up to Ashley’s bungalow behind Grauman’s Chinese Theater around 10:45 PM on February 21, 2001 nearly three hours behind schedule. He knocked on Ashley’s front door. When she didn’t appear, Ashton knocked again. A call to Ashley’s phone went to voicemail. He tried the door handle, but found it locked. Guessing she might be punishing him for being so late, the former Calvin Klein model peered through the window. The lights were on but there was no sign of Ashley, only what he believed to be the remnants of a spilt glass of red wine from a party she’d hosted the night before. Only later would Ashton learn the red streak wasn’t wine …it was Ashley Ellerin’s blood. Confused and disappointed, Kutcher retreated to his car and headed out under the glow of the Hollywood sign. Not long before Ashton arrived to pick up his date, a serial killer, later dubbed the Hollywood Ripper, had also arrived at Ashley’s home. Little did Ashton know, he’d been cast in a role he never expected nor wanted …an eyewitness to murder. Follow Jami on Instagram & TikTok @JamiOnAir and join the Serial Streamers true crime TV club! Best of MURDERISH: E20 - DJ Fickey "Seeking Justice"
A series of three calls came into Walker County 9-1-1 the afternoon of October 3, 2016. The caller said a man shot himself and they needed an ambulance. A woman can be heard wailing and screaming in the background …she’s hysterical. An officer arrives on scene shortly after the third call was finished, and an investigation ensued. However, according to the victim’s family, a bungled investigation, misinformation in official reports, lying witnesses and the fact that all witnesses, and the victim, were drug users …led to an incorrect determination of the manner of death. The victim’s family strongly believes a killer is free and no justice has been served in this case. Join me as I tell the story of Donald Edward Fickey, Jr (“DJ”). MURDERISH now has a Patreon page! Meagan McCarthy / Ari Young: “Captured on Video” | MURDERISH Ep. 151
September 4th, 2019 was a beautiful morning in the desert city of Victorville, California. For most residents in the neighborhood of the 13,000 block of Cabazon Court it was just another morning: quiet and uneventful. Inside one residence, however, chaos was brewing, and it would soon spill out onto the street, shattering the peace and quiet with screams and gunfire. By 8:35 that morning, 26-year-old Meagan McCarthy, a San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputy, would be brutally beaten and shot at with her own gun. And the man who attacked her, 21-year-old Ari Young, would be shot six times by responding deputies. Surprisingly, Ari survived and went on to defend his actions in court. With much of the mayhem caught on video, the incident remained in headlines for years. The disturbing images scrutinized and reviewed on social media and television over and over, as tensions between law enforcement and the public rose across the nation. Four years later, the case came to a close with one of the most hotly debated verdicts in recent history. Was there a massive miscarriage of justice? Or, did the jury see something others didn’t and get the verdict right? In what appeared to be an open and shut case, everyone involved would be reminded that what appears on video ..isn’t always what it seems. Tupac Shakur: “New Developments, Old Suspect” | MURDERISH Ep. 150
Iconic rapper Tupac Shakur, in his lyrics and persona, foreshadowed his own violent end. Tupac’s bold, brash and fearless demeanor earned him a legion of fans, but it also made him a target. Whether intentional or not, Tupac's “thug life” mantra blurred the lines between Hollywood gangsters and real ones, a threshold from which there was no turning back. Now, nearly 30 years after the prolific rapper was gunned down in a hail of bullets near the Las Vegas Strip, the public may finally get confirmation of the men and the motive behind one of music’s greatest mysteries: Who killed Tupac Shakur? Why did it take authorities over 25 years to file charges in such a high-profile case when so many apparently already knew who was responsible? Who were they trying to protect? And what’s changed? Hervey Medellin: “Hollywood Horror” | MURDERISH Ep. 149
This special episode is in collaboration with our good friends over at The Minds of Madness, a true crime podcast. On the morning of January 17th, 2012, Lauren Kornberg and her mother were walking a pack of 9 dogs in the direction of the iconic Hollywood sign in Los Angeles, California. As they veered just off the trail, a Golden Retriever in the group suddenly bolted off and started digging frantically. When the Goldie emerged from the underbrush, he was proudly carrying back something in his mouth …a bag containing a severed human head. The day before, 66-year-old Hervey Medellin had been reported missing. No one had seen or heard from him since December 26th, 2011. And as more body parts were eventually uncovered, the whereabouts of Hervey would soon become all too apparent. The Bling Ring: "Thirsty Thieves" | Serial Streamers TV Club
In this episode of Serial Streamers, Jami brings on a VERY special guest …her best friend since eighth grade, Jessi! Jami and Jessi both watched The Real Bling Ring: Hollywood Heist on Netflix beforehand, and they share their spicy opinions about the docuseries in this hilarious episode. The ladies also share their own personal experiences with petty crime, as they committed a few together back in their teenage years (allegedly). Jessi calls Jami out for being the “mastermind” of their shenanigans back in the day, and Jami reveals her softer side as she shares her experience being a teenage mom whose child needed surgery to treat a life-threatening medical condition. The ladies laughed, cried, and they definitely brought the humor with their commentary on this docuseries. Best of MURDERISH - E113 Alexander Urtula: “The Power of Words”
In 2015, 17-year-old Michelle Carter was indicted on charges connected to the suicide of her 18-year-old boyfriend, Conrad Roy Jr III. In a controversial 2017 trial, a Taunton, Massachusetts jury found her guilty of involuntary manslaughter. A similar case occurred in May 2019, though it received much less publicity. Boston College students Inyoung You and her boyfriend Alexander Urtula had been dating for 18 months when he died by suicide. An investigation would uncover an abundance of abusive text messages from Inyoung in the months leading up to Alexander’s death. The Carter and You cases involved problematic text messages that many argue are what drove both victims in these cases to end their lives. But where does free will end and the power of suggestion take over? Is it possible to brainwash someone into ending their own life? Let’s see if we get any closer to answers as we explore Alexander Urtula’s case in this episode of MURDERISH. Let’s get social: Follow MURDERISH on Instagram & TikTok @MurderishPodcast. Best of MURDERISH - Ep103 Dr. Teresa Sievers: "Lying in Wait"
When an alternative medicine doctor was found bludgeoned to death in her Bonita Springs, Florida home in the summer of 2015, friends and neighbors worried a burglar was on the loose, looking for his next random victim. Detectives with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office told the public that Dr. Teresa Sievers had been bashed in the back of the head after returning home early from a trip with her husband and two daughters. An online sleuth group wondered if Dr. Sievers’s death was connected to that of several other alternative medicine doctors throughout the country who had also died under mysterious circumstances in recent months. The slain doctor’s husband, Mark, had an airtight alibi. Who killed Dr. Sievers and why? The disturbing details of her murder would be revealed in time, and the answers rocked the community. Dr. Henry Lee: “Smeared blood, Smeared Reputation” | MURDERISH Ep. 147
Convicted in 1989 of the brutal murder of 65-year-old Everett Carr in New Milford, Connecticut, Ricky Birch and Shawn Henning were sentenced to 50 years behind bars without any physical evidence tying them to the crime scene. At trial, prosecutors had to explain to a jury how the two men, then only in their teens, managed to beat and stab their victim over 25 times without getting a single drop of his blood onto their clothing. To do so, the district attorney’s office relied on the testimony of the state’s top pathologist ..a man very well known to true crime content enthusiasts. A man by the name of Dr. Henry Lee. Today, Dr. Lee is considered one of the country’s foremost experts on forensic science. Birch and Henning spent decades in prison substantially based on Dr. Henry Lee’s testimony at their trial. More than 30 years after they were convicted, new information came to light and eventually led to their convictions being vacated in 2020. Subsequent to that, Dr. Henry Lee’s reputation would come under intense scrutiny and he found himself in legal trouble. The question now rests in the court of public opinion: Did Dr. Henry Lee make a devastating error on the witness stand? Or, did a man who’s investigated some of the country’s most prominent crimes of the last three decades lie to obtain a conviction? Best of MURDERISH - E86 "Brown's Chicken Massacre"
Late in the evening on Friday, January 8, 1993, the employees in one particular restaurant in Palatine Chicago didn’t know at the time that they would not be going home that night. Hours after these workers began their closing routine, all seven of their bodies would be discovered inside of Brown’s Chicken, a popular restaurant chain. Upon entering the bloody scene, officer Ron Conley dispatched backup saying “Five in the cooler.” This tragedy was the worst mass murder in the Chicago area since 1966 when Richard Speck murdered eight student nurses in their dorm. It would take nine long years for authorities to receive a break in the horrendous case widely known as the Brown’s Chicken Massacre.
