On May 27th, 1991, a call came in to the front desk of the Palm Springs Ramada Inn. The caller was 33-year-old Susan Schnell, a guest at the hotel. Shockingly, Schnell said that she had been sexually assaulted and her throat had been slit. The battered woman was in critical condition but fortunately, she survived. Police quickly arrested her attacker. When investigators questioned the man about the attack on Schnell, they got much more than they bargained for. He admitted not only to the abduction and assault of Susan Schnell, but also told police where they could find the body of a young woman in Seattle whom he had murdered the previous Friday. After being alerted of this grisly confession, King County Police soon found the body of a young woman inside the trunk of her own car. The body was identified as being 21-year-old Holly Washa. On October 21, 2021 a small crew took their places on the set of a low-budget movie titled “Rust,” starring veteran actor Alec Baldwin. When it came time for the scene to be played out, Baldwin pulled out a revolver and a shot rang out. Confusion reigned as the frightened group looked in all directions. Just seven days after a quadruple homicide in Wichita, Kansas, a second would take place. At 5:24 am on Sunday, May 22, 2016, a 9-9-9 operator responded to a call from someone reporting a person who wasn’t breathing. The caller told the 9-9-9 operator that her daughter’s partner had collapsed. When emergency medical personnel reached the home, they found Lyndsey Vaux unresponsive and not breathing. Lyndsey Vaux died not long after the 9-9-9 call. Investigators could have never been prepared for the information they would learn about the events leading up to Lyndsey’s death. Tristan Jensen was a young teenager who had his whole life ahead of him. He and his family lived in Redlands California. 19-year-old Noah Presgrove left a house party in the early morning hours of September 4, 2023 in Terral, Oklahoma. The teenager had been drinking and partying at the house for two days, along with many of his friends. A big rig driver spotted Noah’s nude and battered body on the side of Highway 81, and immediately called 911. Nearly everyone assumed Noah had been killed by a hit and run driver, however, details surrounding his death and evidence found at the scene make many believe Noah was murdered. The high-profile trial of Massachusetts finance professor Karen Read ended without resolution last month. In the year’s most closely watched legal proceedings, the jury, composed of six men and six women, failed to agree on whether Read was guilty of murdering her boyfriend, Boston police officer John O’Keefe, or on the two other charges against her. O’Keefe, 46, was found battered, freezing and unconscious outside a Canton, Massachusetts home on the morning of January 29th, 2022, and later pronounced dead at the hospital. At trial, the commonwealth argued Karen, drunk and upset, struck John with her SUV and abandoned him in a snowstorm. Karen’s defense maintained her innocence, alleging that John was killed by fellow law enforcement officers during a house party and that Karen Read was framed by those officers. The live-streamed trial was a rollercoaster with all the drama of a Hollywood script: a police cover-up, misconduct, misogynistic and highly unprofessional text messages from the lead detective, a potential love triangle, lies, and betrayal. Millions were glued to the story, especially in New England, where papers referred to it as “Boston’s trial of the century.” What happens next is anyone’s guess as the story is far from over. On February 12, 1971 19-year-old Jesse McBane headed out to surprise his fiance, 20-year-old Patricia Mann. He was taking her to a Valentine’s Dance in Durham, North Carolina. The two lovebirds had to be back at Patricia's dormitory by 1:00 AM curfew. Only …she never returned. Durham police officers found Jesse’s Ford Cortina the next evening parked in a cul-de-sac. 12 days later, a land surveyor came upon what he thought was a mannequin’s leg sticking out from a pile of leaves. When he poked the extremity with a stick …he saw skin move. It was the missing students. Details from the crime scene suggested the couple had been tortured and murdered by hanging. Word of the heinous crime shocked the Tarheel State. The next day’s page 1 headline in the Durham Sun read: ‘Strangulation by Rope Killed Couple.” Over 50 years later, the double homicide remains North Carolina’s most notorious unsolved murder. In the Summer of 1992, the scorching temperatures in Manhattan were of little concern to Marsha P. Johnson. Her days didn’t truly start until long after the sun had gone down. Fresh from the Pride Parade, Marsha made plans the evening of July 4th, 1992 to meet her friend Miss Kitty at The Anvil, one of the many gay bars lining Christopher Street in Greenwich Village. They were supposed to rendezvous at midnight. Only …Marsha never showed. Two days later, on July 6th, a passerby spotted something floating just off the Hudson River Pier shortly after sunrise. It was Marsha. The LGBTQ rights activist was dead at 46. Given Marsha’s notoriety as an outspoken supporter of gay and trans rights, friends immediately suspected foul play. The NYPD and medical examiner saw things differently, quickly declaring Marsha’s death a suicide by drowning. Those who knew the transgender pioneer well dismissed the notion that Johnson took her own life. Her history of substance abuse and depression notwithstanding, Marsha had never given any indication she was suicidal. Over 30 years have passed and still, Marsha P. On January 29, 2022, Karen Read dropped off her boyfriend, John O’Keefe, at a house party in Canton, Massachusetts. When she awoke the next morning and found John not in bed, Karen became concerned. She drove around looking for him and eventually made her way to 34 Fairview Rd., the location of the house-party where she’d taken him earlier that morning. Karen screamed upon seeing John’s body lying in the front yard of the home, unconscious and covered in snow. John O’Keefe was dead. A murder investigation ensued, with Karen Read being the primary target. Karen’s defense, however, had a different theory. They posited that John O’Keefe was killed by someone who’d attended the party, and several partygoers, all members of law enforcement, helped to cover up the crime. In December of 1992, Justin Hopper, was making plans to move and get a fresh start. He was a high school senior at the time when he found himself in a dangerous situation. When two people meet, it’s exciting when there’s a mutual, instant affection for one another. It doesn’t always happen but when it does, it’s special. On rare occasions, however, a seemingly special human connection can actually be a bad thing, and in even more rare instances, it can lead to deadly consequences. The case we’re examining in this episode begs the question …would someone have died if two people had not had the opportunity to meet? A 1954 murder case out of New Zealand shocked the world due, in part, to the highly unlikely perpetrators. Honora Parker was savagely murdered on June 22, 1954. On September 29, 2020, the Iskander family of six went out for an evening stroll in their Westlake Village neighborhood having no idea of the tragedy that lay ahead. On that same evening, wealthy socialite Rebecca Grossman was having drinks at a local Westlake Village restaurant with Royce Clayton and Scott Erickson, two former major league baseball players. After downing margaritas, Grossman and Erickson got into their expensive cars and headed toward Grossman’s nearby condo to hang out. At some point, the two decided to race each other through the residential neighborhood. At that exact moment, Nancy Iskander and her three sons were crossing the street. Before they could respond, Rebecca Grossman and Scott Erickson came racing toward them in their vehicles fueled by bravado tequila. One of the vehicles struck two of the Iskander boys, Mark and Jacob, killing them. Three and a half agonizing years later, Rebecca Grossman went on trial for Mark and Jacob’s murder.
