Therefore, it's important to develop friendships. In a social setting, you can let your clothes, a broach or tie be a focal point to start a conversation. Other important gestures we can use to make ourselves appealing to friendship would be to put our phones down, have engaging eye contact and facial expressions. The women saw several young girls in the school struggling with isolation, etc and they developed a safe space for them. Connect your young lady with these educators at [email protected] HEALTHCARE IN THE NEW YEAR Since the president's Big Beautiful Bill passed in July, Americans have been confused about their healthcare. We understood that part of the government shutdown was due to politicians not agreeing on raising the costs for everyone on Medicaid, Medicare and through the Marketplace. Dwight Dale with SOAR Health Advisors broke it down - Medicare costs will rise a bit, to stay insured through the Marketplace you have to keep up with your taxes so the government can determine your eligibility. If you're on Medicaid and have had your care suspended, call the Center for Medicaid and Medicare Services 1-800-633-4227. For information on how to make a duffle bag donation or even mentor a foster child visit www.blackadopteesmeetup.org Dr. Cornelia Franz shared helpful tips on how to keep your child on track with their wellness visits, in spite of the current healthcare situation. Her practice is based on an alternative to Western Medicine. The Franz Center uses Chinese and wholistic medicine. Her practice is based on a monthly payment system which she maintains is a drastic reduction in comparison to actual insurance costs which are increasing under the current administration. Dr. Franz sees pediatric patients up until 25 and has a nurse practitioner for adults. To learn your options visit www.thefranzcenter.com Amid controversy which we talked about last year on POV with Equal Ground, SB2510 passed. It allows the KIPP Team and Family charter school to come into under populated or lower performing schools (which will be in majority minority neighborhoods) and set up "Schools of Hope". There has been an approximate 6,500 student enrollment decline this year. This method will have to be financially supported by OCPS funds and can ultimately drain the taxpayer coffers. An alternative offered by Jarvis Wheeler with LIFT Orlando, was modeled after a school in Harlem and works independently in their neighborhood school which is Orange Center Elementary. Principal Erin Albert understands the need to work with parents and students together to build toward excellence. OCPS School Board Member, Vicki Felder also mentioned an upcoming conservative led conference, ALEC as well as the Jones H.S. revitalization meeting Monday November 17th @ 6pm
SAVING OUR COMMUNITY
Our nation is in the 40th day of the government shutdown and as of November 1st no one has received SNAP benefits - what can we do? Ray Warthen - the Black Farmer is an engineer by trade who was affiliated with the construction of both the I-4 Ultimate Project and Brightline. However, he is a 5th generation farmer and initially designed a farm to sustain the residents of Parramore. Infinite Zion Farms was established but unfortunately, politics played a role in him moving his efforts to Groveland. He gave us tips on maintaining our own garden to grow produce. You can use aeroponic or hydroponic systems or even raised beds. Ray still operates a local community project on Kaley Square. Connect with him www.infinitezionfarms.org Second Harvest C.E.O. Derrick Chubbs expressed how they serve 300,000 meals daily and since SNAP benefits have not received, there's been a 308% increase in the demand for food. It is greater than during the pandemic. He noted that beyond those without EBT, many have lost jobs and over 60% of those in need are working but cannot make ends meet. For every meal they provide, EBT provides 9. It is important to develop a Hunger Army to weather this food drought that consists of Faith leaders, Donors, Corporations and Elected Officials to help our community. Visit www.feedhopenow.org to access their food finder (800 agency's are listed that can help in your community). Congressman Maxwell Frost agreed with Mr. Chubbs, "We can't foodbank our way out of poverty." There is food available, but hunger has become a political issue. The government shutdown he explained is based on Republicans and Democrats not agreeing on healthcare rates that are about to expire through the Affordable Care Act. They have not negotiated for 40 days now (the longest shut down in history) but he does see a glimmer of hope. In the meantime, we have to support one another if we can. He is collecting food for the federal workers who have been furloughed. To find out more visit MaxwellFrostFL on Instagram

CONQUERING SICKLE CELL DISEASE/WHAT IS CTE? HOW DOES IT AFFECT ATHLETES?
Sickle Cell Anemia affects more black people than any other ethnicity. However, people from Africa, the Caribbean, Mediterranean and of Middle Eastern descent can be diagnosed with the disease. The most effective blood test to diagnose sickle cell anemia is hemoglobin electrophoresis, also known as high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), which identifies and measures the abnormal form of hemoglobin that causes the disease. A complete blood count (CBC) can also detect anemia by showing low hemoglobin levels and a high number of immature red blood cells, while a peripheral blood smear can reveal the distinctive sickle-shaped red blood cells. A local organization that educates and advocates for sickle cell patients is www.sicklecellconquerorsofcentralflorida.org Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is a progressive disease caused by repeated concussions and repeated brain injuries. Dr. Quinella Minix with www.siranpsych.com is a brain specialist who works with athletes around the world. She provides mental coaching to celebrities as well as executives and stresses it is very important to "train your brain as well as your body!" She mentioned the four stages of CTE - Stage 1 - Small deposits can be found on the frontal lobe and deals with judgment Stage 2 - Moves into a more moderate Stage 3 - Affects the temporal part of the brain and the person becomes more aggressive and the 4th and Final stage (many never make it through) is full dementia with Parkinson's movements where full care is necessary. Our local expert, Dr. Pernell Bush reminded us that CTE is preventable with proper equipment worn in sports, the guardian cap. He invited family members to relay to the doctors the various mood swings since they know the patient well. He encouraged anyone who thinks that CTE is a possibility to see a mental health professional or psychologist. Connect with Dr. P at www.NLCounseling.org or call 407/988-1500

God, we thank you for bringing us together this morning. God, we ask that you would just cover our students cover our families cover our children as we send them back to school. God, we ask that you would be with the teachers be with the administration be with the entire community God, so that this will be a successful year for our students. God, we pray that no barrier, no challenge and no weapon formed against them shall prosper, because we know that in your hands, they will thrive, they will hope they will affirm, and they will transcend because they were born to be that. And so God, we give you all the glory, we give you all the honor for a successful school year In your son, Jesus name Amen." Orange County Mayor Jerry L. Demings was very clear on why he opted to sign an agreement regarding ICE and the transportation of immigrant detainees by Orange County law enforcement. The burden would be overwhelming to an already understaffed jail personnel. So, in an effort to avoid the removal of County Commissioners and his position by the governor, the Mayor did sign an agreement (which can be seen below). Note: Pride Month was started in June 1970 after the 1969 raid of the famous Stonewall nightclub in New York city. Many were injured or killed in the melee, but it was noted that a black trans woman spoke up asking, “So what are we going to do?” Hence the start of the Come Out With Pride movement. However, it wasn’t until former President Bill Clinton and later Barack Obama acknowledged the month officially. In our discussion we also talked about the suicide rate for people in the LGBTQ community because of ostracism…..if you or someone you know is thinking of suicide, please call 988. She said that our Body, Mind & Spirit must be in alignment for our mental health to balance. She gave simple daily remedies to do intentionally; read, move, talk to a friend, eat a snack, enjoy the sunshine, sing, or dance. When that doesn’t help, seeing a therapist might work and you should do so without stigma. Dr. Brown-James reminded us that kids who become silent, easily agitated, or isolated may be struggling with their mental health.
