Ep 166Ep.166 Rich Miller - Ministry of Arts Podcast

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Rich Miller (@richmillerpots) Richard studied ceramics at the Surrey Institute of Art and Design, graduating in 2003. For the last 12 years he’s been running Froyle Tiles, a handmade tile company based in Surrey. Specialising in the bespoke production of high fired stoneware tiles, they have to date carried out a range of commissions for a variety of notable architects and designers. Richard has a passion for clay and continues his own studio practice, exhibiting his ceramics at selected shows. Richard's work makes reference to historical design patterns. It draws on themes of British colonialism and the way in which the U.K. has become an eclectic mix of cultural styles, as immigration has brought with it a rich source of influence. Images associated with the colonies, that have become adopted by the British mainstream are the core influence on Richard's practice. More recently Richard fulfilled the role of judge on the Channel 4’s ‘The great Pottery Throwdown’. Ep 163Ep.163 Camille Walala - Ministry of Arts Podcast

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Camille Walala (@camillewalala) Known for her ambitious, large-scale and explosively colourful interventions in public spaces, Camille Walala uses the man-made landscape as a platform for disseminating positivity. Her work encompasses full-facade murals, immersive 3D installations, street art, interiors and set design – characterised by a fusion of bold colours and playful geometric patterns. Since her ‘Dream Come True Building’ burst onto the Shoreditch streetscape in 2015 and thrust her into the spotlight, Camille and her creative producer, Julia Jomaa, have been engaged in an increasingly bold roster of international projects. These have included collaborations with leading global brands – such as LEGO, for whom she created the HOUSE OF DOTS; the creative direction of the ground-breaking Mauritian hotel SALT of Palmar; and a slew of major installations for events like NYC’s WantedDesign and London Design Festival – including Walala Lounge, as complete suite of semi-permanent street furniture that transformed South Molton Street, Mayfair, into a corridor of colour. Camille finds inspiration in community and collaboration, and the power or colour and pattern to transform atmospheres, elevate moods and spark positivity. Ep 162Ep.162 The London Police - Ministry of Arts Podcast

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Bob & Chaz of The London Police (@thelondonpolice) The London Police is an art collective started in 1998 when two English geezers headed to Amsterdam to rejuvenate the visually disappointing streets of Hollands capital. They were part of a small group of artists at the end of the last century that helped pioneer the street art movement. After a few years of mixing traveling and making art in the street TLP began to receive worldwide recognition for their contribution to the graffiti/street art movement. They were included in many of the books documenting the scene and invited for shows and live drawing performances all over the globe. Some 22 years on TLP have amassed more than 100 shows and events in over 35 countries and their street work continues to pop up everywhere they go. Since 2009 TLP has concentrated on more intense canvas work, on bigger solo shows and large scale mural projects. The London Police are Chaz Barrisson who draws the iconic ‘LADS’ character and Bob Gibson whose tight portrait and architectural illustrations help marry the two styles to create an endearing, exciting fantasy world... Ep 159Ep.160 Keith Brymer Jones - Ministry of Arts Podcast

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Keith Brymer Jones (@keith brymerjones) Keith Brymer Jones is a British potter and ceramic designer, known for his homeware Word Range with retro lettering and punk motifs. In 2015, he debuted as an expert judge alongside Kate Malone on BBC2’s The Great Pottery Throw Down where his readiness to shed tears at the contestants' work attracted comment. He has continued his role and remained as judge when the programme transferred to More4 in 2020. At the age of 11, the London-born Brymer Jones made his first pottery object – an owl. It was then that he knew he wanted to be a potter and, after a brief stint as the lead singer of British punk band The Wigs, he became an apprentice for Harefield Pottery in London. This is where he learnt to make modern ceramics. After his apprenticeship, Brymer Jones started out hand-making ceramics for retailers including Conran Group, Habitat, Barneys New York, Monsoon, Laura Ashley and Heal's. He began to develop the Word Range for the first time; he was originally attracted to words because of their shapes, as he is dyslexic. Brymer Jones describes working with clay, shape and form as a natural affinity, as a result of his condition. Brymer Jones also works as Head of Design for MAKE International. In this role he collaborates with other designers including Jane Foster, Scion Living, Hokolo and Becky Baur. Ep 158Ep.158 Sam Haynes - Ministry of Arts Podcast

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Sam Haynes (@samhaynessculpture) As an artist that initially felt isolated and uncomfortably distanced from everyday life working within a studio, I started my practice over twenty-five years ago creating site specific public art installations, engaging local communities with the belief that art has the power to bridge divides within society. The creative process is still all about making connections for me, within my practice as an artist facilitator, as well as a collaborator and sculptor. Accessibility lies at the heart of my work, incorporating found objects and materials, using low tech methods of construction to create abstract assemblages that reference domestic and architectural space. My mixed media work combines a rhythmical, systematic design and geometric structure with softer, flexible elements that take shape more organically. I am led primarily by an intuitive response to these contrasting or opposing materials, leading to often unexpected outcomes. These playful interactions, surprising and yet familiar, seek to create a sense of balance and tension, building dynamic connections between materials and the surrounding space, animated through the use of colour, light and shadow. I have been strongly influenced by the artwork of Action Space’s learning disabled artists, Linda Bell and Nnena Kalu. Their abstract, process-led installations show an honest and direct response to materials, free from conventional constrictions; an approach that I seek to mirror within my own sculptural practice. Ep 156Ep.156 Patrick Colhoun - Ministry of Arts Podcast

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Patrick Colhoun (@patrickcolhoun) Originally trained as a ceramicist, Patrick Colhoun's practice is now multi-disciplinary with sculptures and installations combining black clay, hosiery, latex, piercings and metal spikes. The first public exhibition of his work coincided to the day with redundancy after a twenty-year career. This was followed one year later by the death of his father. Colhoun's work has been shaped largely by these events and by the realization that the work has been the thing that has helped him work through these issues. More than that, these events shaped a direction for his work which he has expanded upon and developed to this day. Colhoun has always strived to be unique with his art. He enjoys dividing opinion and invites the audience to either love or hate his sculptures! Surprisingly, the positive response to the darker themes encouraged Colhoun to push the boundaries of taste even further and he soon introduced objects and materials into the clay sculptures. Ep 154Ep.154 Liberty Choir - Ministry of Arts Podcast

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to MJ Paranzino & Ginny Dougary of Liberty Choir (@libertychoiruk) The overall aim of Liberty Choirs is to provide for excluded and isolated people (for example, those in secure psychiatric settings or people who are serving custodial sentences) a ‘through the gate’ programme of high-quality singing and social development. It is designed to help develop skills and self-confidence, open up the world of arts through singing and provide access to new social networks as the participants re-enter the wider community. The Liberty Choir vision is that the reoffending rates among ex-offenders can be significantly reduced through a network of choirs located within prison and the community. Ep 141Ep.141 Anthony Garratt - Ministry of Arts Podcast

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Anthony Garratt (@_anthony_garratt_) Anthony Garratt's work is concerned with the weather, an experience and impact of a landscape. His research time is spent in heavy weather, in remote locations and places that have an emotional impact. AG: “The more I paint, the more I realise that we are at the mercy of the landscape and elements. This is very appealing to me. In a world where we are obsessed with ownership and control, it is humbling and important that we are reminded to respect the weather, sea, hills and landscape on which we rely". “Britain provides us with weather which makes us feel vulnerable. Ep 132Ep.132 AK47 & The Banksy Job - Ministry of Arts Podcast

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to AK47 aka Andy Link (@AK47TheArtist) AK47 is a well-known figure in urban/street art circles and an absolute pleasure to talk to; funny, bold, brash and just oozing Yorkshire charisma. He is also a self-proclaimed ‘art terrorist’, leader of Art Kieda; an “underground global network of arto-politkal activists”. AK47 tells us his amazing story, of an ongoing battle, lasting several years, over The Drinker, a statue by Banksy that he placed in a square, just off Shaftsbury Avenue, in London in 2004. Art Kieda drove a truck into London, took possession of it and reported it as ‘found’ at the local police station, where if unclaimed after 3 months, the found item would legally belong to the finder (under UK law). This story, and how it later unfolded was documented in a film entitled The Banksy Job, which had the wit and comedy of an Ealing caper with the fast paced action of a British crime movie (by Ipso Facto Productions). This podcast episode tells of the most recent saga in AK47’s story of the battle of The Drinker, which now include Sotherby’s! Ep 131Ep.131 Yan Skates - Ministry of Arts Podcast

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Yan Skates (@YanSkates) KCAW and the King’s Road Curve present a new floral sculpture installation, in memory of Advisory Board member Sarah Farrugia. Created by artist and florist Yan Skates, the artwork features a 2metre tall dog, made from discarded materials and living plants. This work is based on the lessons learnt by Skates whilst taking part in Netflix’s The Big Flower Fight, where they were asked to create large scale animals and creatures out of waste and plants. The work urges us to reimagine the way we live today. Using discarded materials such as water bottles, alongside living plants, the sculpture is a reminder of the urgent issues of pollution and waste, and invites us to think of our own impact on the environment. The dog, man’s best friend, is a symbol of companionship, but also a fun, recognisable figure that we can all recognise and relate to. It invites us to get close and investigate the work, its unusual materials sparking conversation. * Kensington + Chelsea Art Festival is expanding throughout the summer season with a festival that elevates the magic and shared experiences of public art and live performance. Ep 130Ep.130 My Dog Sighs INSIDE - Ministry of Arts Podcast

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to My Dog Sighs (@mydogsighs) After 10 years of giving his art away for free as part of the now infamous Free Art Friday project, My Dog Sighs has this year finally found himself strapped in to a well-deserved meteoric rise. With an incredible international following in Israel, Japan and of course the UK, five sold out shows under his belt, and a strong following of staunchly loyal fans on social media; My Dog Sighs is fast becoming an important figure on the contemporary art scene. My Dog Sighs INSIDE (We shelter here sometimes) ‘INSIDE’ opens Saturday 17th July at The Old Casino, Osborne Road, Southsea, PO5 3LT This is my most ambitious project to date, spending over a year transforming a derelict building into an immersive world inhabited by my ‘Quiet Little Voices’. When I first stumbled into Street art, the artists were often perceived as ghosts, with only the results of their endeavours visible to the world. With this project I take my quiet little voices and shift the the narrative what is understood by ‘My Dog Sighs’. No longer is My Dog Sighs the scruffy guy with a bedraggled Mohawk the artist you thought, but, by entering ‘Inside’ you’re able to catch a glimpse of a new, alternative, world. Ep 129Ep.129 LR Vandy- Ministry of Arts Podcast

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to LR Vandy (@lrvandy) In her sculptures, LR Vandy brings together both found and made objects in order to create new meaning from seemingly unrelated mediums forced together. A large Jesmonite sculpture from the series Superhero Cog-Woman, this work, on view in Napoleon Garden for Summer 2021 as part of the *Kensington & Chelsea Art Festival, is a tribute to women throughout time, alluding to how women have often acted as the unmentioned drivers of industry, toiling long and hard but underrated, often overlooked and largely unrecognised. Cogs are mechanical components used to connect one thing to another, literally enabling things to be driven forward. As such, they act as a perfect metaphor for the role of women in industry and indeed in society in general. * Kensington + Chelsea Art Festival is expanding throughout the summer season with a festival that elevates the magic and shared experiences of public art and live performance. In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Zak Ové (@zakove) Zak Ové is a London based multi-disciplinary artist working in film, sculpture and photography to reclaim old world mythologies in new world source materials and technologies. His fascination with the interplay between antiquity and the future is inspired by masking rituals and traditions of Trinidadian carnival that is itself rooted in a struggle for emancipation. Ové’s work is in celebration of the power of play, the juxtaposition of parody and sacred ritual and the blurring of edges between reality and fantasy, flesh and spirit. His use of non-traditional materials: copper, wood, Victoriana and other found materials, situates the work in the metropoles of Europe and the Americas where they merge and mutate into endless possibilities and unexpected identities. Ep 124Ep.124 Sarah Hardie - Ministry of Arts Podcast

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Sarah Hardie (@sarahhardie.art) Sarah’s practice deals with how we live in the world, the intimate and extimate nature of the human voice and how we connect through it, via language and other forms of aural communication. The concept of resonance itself captures within it the potential for both love (if love is an echoing or recognition and acknowledgement of the self by another (‘I rebound I am light’, Roland Barthes), and loss (in the temporal nature of echoes). These ideas are always at the heart of her work. Sarah was awarded the inaugural Soho House Art Prize 2020/21, selected by illustrious panel: Maria Balshaw (Director, Tate); Kate Bryan (Head of Global Collection,Soho House); and Hebru Brantley (Artist) and created an artist’s film, a symphonic visual essay, ‘Spring sometimes rises in me too’ screened at Electric Cinemas internationally in June 2021. Ep 121Ep.121 Edie Baker - Ministry of Arts Podcast

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Edie Baker (@Ediebakerart) Specialising in collage, contemporary artist Edie Baker creates new narratives from predominantly ephemeral images sourced from magazines, books or those discarded on the street. Larger works are created by digitally printing previously treated images onto stretched canvasses which are then embellished with shapes, patterns and forms that enhance or detract from certain areas of the original. Content is often brutally cut or edited, resulting in final pieces that speak more of what is absent, rather than that which is present. This treatment leads to work that is sometimes awkward, sometimes humorous, sometimes provocative but almost always surreal. Ep 119Ep.119 Louise Hall - Ministry of Arts Podcast

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Louise Hall (@Louise_hall_art) Fresh out of university, Louise created her first exhibition away from her fellow students. Gary met Louise via ART IN THE AGE OF NOW at Fulham Town Hall, where Louise was representing the Kensington and Chelsea art Week, that starts on 24th June. "As a UK based multidisciplinary artist that focuses on performance, printmaking and sculpture. To explore conversations on postcolonial ideas around the Black British experience in the UK and the diaspora. Investigating through materiality of fabric and language to investigate social issues within the UK and the BAME experience. Challenging concerns of colonial narrative and history, and the impact within education and many other aspects of society. The use of non-violent imagery within the works to represent violent traumatic events with ties to plantations, colonial history and transatlantic slave trade." Louise has created an extremely powerful installation called '13 Dead, Nothing Said' which focuses on a house-fire in South East London, which took the lives of 13 black teenagers/young adults, thought [by a majority of the victim's families] to be a racially motivated arson attack.. After two separate inquests, the cause of the fire was recorded as an 'open verdict'. CAUTION: This episode deals traumatic events, listener caution is advised. Ep 118Ep.118 Orlanda Broom - Ministry of Arts Podcast

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Orlanda Broom (@OrlandaBroom) Orlanda's main practice is painting which takes two distinct forms: lush, exotic landscapes and abstract pieces. Connecting these bodies of work is a strong sense of colour, references to organic forms and the exploration of the mediums she works with. The abstract paintings are created through a process that involves no intervention with tools or brushes, just the flow and manipulation of the medium on the canvas. There is an immediacy and freshness borne out of this way of working which is complementary to the layered aspect of her landscape paintings. Her landscapes represent re-imagined places which are celebratory, and in some senses, a rose-tinted view of the natural world. The surface joyousness is tempered by an uneasy sense of abandonment. she depicts wild places that are uninhabited and timeless, offering a glimpse of paradise that would ultimately ensnare and/or is potentially lost to us..
