In this episode Gary Mansfield talks to Ben Oakley, owner and director of The Ben Oakley Gallery, in Greenwhich Market. After working in the film industry for several years, Ben turned his hand to Mosaic. Moving from one of the most laborious and time-consuming creative processes to probably the quickest, Ben discovered graffiti – being in the Secret Society of Super Villain Artists – Santa’s Grotty Show, alongside artists like Silent Bill & Banksy. Soon after Santa’s Grotty is when he opened the Gallery, selling the work of fellow graffiti artists and supporting local artists & charities. In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Ray Richardson. Ray Richardson is a figurative painter from Woolwich, South East London, an environment that features heavily in his work. Another main feature of his work is an English Bull Terrier breed of dog, which symbolises the artist himself. Ray's painting style has a very cinematic feel, often having figures entering or leaving the frame, only half visible. This style led one critic to describe him as the Martin Scorsase of figurative painting. In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Alice Irwin. Within less than six months of graduating from the Royal Collage of Art, Alice was selling her work via Flowers Gallery and had had a solo show at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Alice's studio is packed, floor to ceiling with sketches, prints and port folios. As a result of several years spent working in couture fashion, her super-realist portraits could be the cover of a fashion magazine. Dave Buonaguidi had literally decided to become a screen-printer overnight. He left his job, in advertising on a Friday, went on a one-day screen-printing course at Print Club London on the Saturday and fell in love with the rapid creative process that day. Dave is best known for laying bold text over found maps, manuscripts and documents. When one of the UK’s largest Estate Agents started using adverts very similar the Dave’s recent work, Dave responded with a highly amusing barrage of ‘fake’ ad’s in the guise of those used by the Estate Agents. Whilst now running his own successful advertising agency Dave still finds the time to fulfil commissions and create his own body of work. In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Mat Collishaw. Mat Collishaw was a key figure in Damien Hirst's legendary Freeze exhibition, as well as Charles Saatchi's controversial [at the time] Sensations exhibition at the Royal Academy. Mat has used the latest VR technology to recreate William Henry Fox Talbot's 1839 photography exhibition, even including the Chartist's protest. In his 2018 wor, Mask of Youth, Mat collaborated with cutting-edge special effect designers to create a 'truer' interpretation of what Queen Elizabeth I may have looked like around the time her Armada Portrait was painted (the two works sit opposite each-other at The Queens House, Greenwich, London). Carrie Reichardt is not only one of Gary Mansfield's favourite artists, but one of his favourite people. She is such a multi-layerd person, a mosaic artist, a craftivist, she’s vocally opposed to death penalty and an all-round bloody good person, albeit a bit of an eccentric one. Carrie Reichardt is best known for her mosaic and ceramic work, her amazing home is testament to the quality of her work (look online) although she could start to incorporate textile into her work soon. Carrie, along with partner Bob Osbourne, have just released a compilation of defaced banknotes by various artists in a hardback book entitled CASH IS KING, which is being launched at The Saatchi Gallery with an accompanying exhibition of a number of the banknotes.
