Ep 232Ep.232 The Cameron Twins & DWW Gallery - Ministry of Arts Podcast
In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Abigail & Phoebe Cameron a.k.a The Cameron Twins (@the_camerontwins) and Ned Kelly from The Don't Wakk Walk Gallery (@dontwalkwalkgallery)The Cameron Twins are a collaborative artist duo of identical twins who work together in a range of different media including screen print, digital montage, photography, casting, sculpture and installation .Their work has an overall strong and garish style using an oversaturated bright colour palette to create a surreal quality. The vivid colours and child-like naïve aesthetic with chaotic ensembles of images allows them to work playfully, exploring the ideas surrounding childhood imagination and dreams within their art practice. The Cameron Twins’ practice incorporates many familiar, recognisable, fun images and pop-culture references from childhood, such as Barbie, Trolls and My Little Pony . 'We enjoy using this popular imagery in our sculptures and prints as they add a playful and witty quality to the work and adds to the connectivity of our art across ages and social confines whilst still remaining personal and anecdotal’. The often familiar subject matter and the bright and juvenile colour palette used in the work can create a misleading cheerful aesthetic which then juxtaposes with the more sinister tones and darker imagery often revealed under closer inspection. The artists want the viewer to question the effect of nostalgia on their own memories and past experiences, and to scratch away at what might, or might not, lie just beneath the surface.DONT WALK WALK opened in March 2017. We are an independent artist run gallery in Deal, Kent boasting a 'punk rock' ethic and a strong desire to offer something a little different. DWW is a working space with my studio in which I paint. The gallery showcases 40 + artists being emerging and established talents in painting, printmaking, illustration, photography & sculpture from domestic and international shores. Julie Bennett - MoA Bonus Episode 35
bonusEIn this bonus episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Julie Bennett (@Julie_Bennett)Julie Bennett is a portrait painter living and working in London. Her bold, unapologetically confident portraits appropriate pop culture icons from the music industry and art world, creating contemporary homages to the likes of David Bowie, Elvis, Frida Kahlo, Boy George, Patti Smith, and Her Majesty The Queen.Defined as British Pop Art, her dripping wet, vibrant, colourful broad-brush marks give the appearance of canvases being fresh out of the studio. Working mostly in oil, led by the paint, she tries to capture the emotional charge of the individual, creating an iconic work of art.Bennett studied painting at Camberwell College of Arts where she crafted and explored the use of mark-making to convey her fascination with the human face and the immediacy of her paint handling.Bennett is driven by her lifelong obsession with music and art, spending her teenage years working at a record shop and after graduation, working as a graphic designer at some of the top UK music and celebrity magazines, She is a genuine fan of many of the celebrities she paints.Text taken from: https://www.degreeart.com/artists/julie-bennettFor more information on the work of Julie Bennett go to: https://www.juliebennett.co.ukTo Support this podcast from as little as £3 per month: www.patreon/ministryofartsIf you would like to promote your work, exhibition or any other creative project, please contact us at:Social Media: @ministryofartsorgEmail: [email protected] Hosted on Acast. Ep 230Ep.230 Jessica Worrall - Ministry of Arts Podcast
EIn this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Jessica Worrall (@jessicaworralldigitalcollage)Originally from Yorkshire and now based in Glasgow, I’ve worked as a theatre designer for over 30 years working in both the mainstream and the experimental with my designs being seen from a disused bus in a Bethnal Green car park to the main stage at Shakespeares Globe.During lockdown I took advantage of the hiatus in my theatre work to explore the creative possibilities of making my own work, initially just playing around with ideas which soon developed into a series of digital collages. These works juxtapose portraits of women from art with images of modern day couture as a way of questioning the external forces that exist within both art and fashion and which shape and enforce our understanding of the ideals around women’s status in society. Initially making the work just for myself I was persuaded by friends to share the work on Instagram where it has gained a steady stream of followers. This led to a bit of a career rethink and though I do still design for theatre I am focussing more and more on this more personal creative practice. This year I made a new series of large scale collage works entitled ‘The Shaping of Beauty’ which were shown on advertising billboards in Glasgow, Dundee and Edinburgh. https://www.buildhollywood.co.uk/work/jessica-worrall-the-shaping-of-beauty/I also now sell limited edition prints of my work which you can find at my Etsy shop https://www.etsy.com/shop/JWCollageTo Support this podcast from as little as £3 per month: www.patreon/ministryofartsFor full line up of confirmed artists go to https://www.ministryofarts.orgEmail: [email protected] Media: @ministryofartsorg Hosted on Acast. In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Peter Morris (@petermorrisarchitects) Peter Morris is primarily an architect, who has been running his own practice for over a decade. But his other creative work – as an artist, illustrator, model-maker and designer of products and interiors – has always sat alongside his architectural work, and he loves to bring the colour, quirkiness and joy of his artworks to his buildings wherever possible. The sculpture joining KCAW ART TRAIL this summer is a Wendy House version of a house that Peter is about to start building for his family, in North London, called The Cloud House – and the story of how this lifelong dream came into being has deep roots in the K&C borough. Ep 217Ep.217 Sophie Derrick - Ministry of Arts Podcast
EIn this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Sophie Derrick (@SophieDerrickArt)Sophie Derrick's work very much focuses on portraiture, but with the use of both painting and photography this genre is skewed and manipulated, and the transformative properties of paint are pushed to the limit. She photographs the act of painting onto her own skin and then paints on top of the photographs, creating a layering of image of paint and painted image, blurring the boundaries between the two. The 'self' is lost, buried beneath the paint, and the notion of portraiture is questioned. The body becomes both object and subject within Sophie Derrick's work. There is a constant shift between dualities; painting and photography, absence and presence, and reality and fiction. The painting, photographic and layering techniques, and bold, vibrant colours used within the work become obstacles to reality, distorting and creating absurd and abstracted portraits. Sophie Derrick's work incorporates the two mediums of painting and photography. She has a great interest in the materiality and substance of paint, and execute this interest through photography, creating a juxtaposition of the two mediums. Holly graduated from Chelsea College of Art and Design Fine Art MA in 2011 with the generous help of the Stanley Picker Trust and was awarded the MFI Flat Time House Graduate Award, supported by the John Latham Foundation. EIn this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Ant Hamlyn (@anthamlyn)Working across a pollination of hand made and digital fabrication processes, Ant Hamlyn’s works delve into our relationship and fluctuating enthusiasm towards contemporary life. His sculptures regularly have anthropomorphic elements and work with metaphor, technology and the interplay between hard and soft to create moments of tactility and surprise through material and visual obscurity. Often creating relics from a recognizable yet parallel space. Hamlyn’s conceptual framework is recently taken from plants, nostalgia, preservation and magic. With the exception of a number of larger kinetic installations, the majority of Hamlyn’s works are meticulously sewn by hand. This delicate interplay between materiality, scale and context are intrinsic to the simultaneous creation of mystery, familiarity and deception. His works are held in private international collections. His studio is currently in West London. Ep 214Ep.214 Charlie Haydn Taylor - Ministry of Arts Podcast
EIn this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Charlie Haydn Taylor (@charliehtart)Charlie Haydn Taylor was born in Jersey, Channel Islands and is now based in London. His work evokes a sense of contemplation and isolation, where the lines between the fictional and autobiographical collide. His most recent works respond to the emotional weight of isolation that can occur when living in a major city, paradoxically surrounded by millions of others. With regards to this, his work looks to convey a sense of the difference between private and public persona, where the viewer is able to place themselves into the pieces as a first-person participant. The stylistic approach of using both photographic realism collaged alongside flat, block colour is done in order to create a new, fictional reality where the interiors exist but still appear recognisable due to the sum of its parts. The inclusion of various objects ranging from books to letters as well as household objects is an attempt to give the viewer markers on the narrative that is occurring within each scene. For more information on the work of Charlie Haydn Taylor go tohttps://www.charliehaydntaylor.comTo Support this podcast from as little as £3 per month: patreon/ministryofartsFor full line up of confirmed artists go to https://www.ministryofarts.orgEmail: [email protected] Media: @ministryofartsorg Hosted on Acast. Sasha Bowles - MoA Bonus Episode 27
bonusIn this bonus episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Sasha Bowles (@sashabowles1)Sasha Bowles is a London based multi-disciplinary artist, working across painting, objects, film and installation. Bowles creates artefacts and installations housed within provisional environments that are a means of storytelling but are not a narrative. Her practice is an evolving loop, dealing with illusion, intervention and metamorphosis; immersing herself in historical tropes encountered in houses of grandeur and often using as a jumping off point; the Baroque bravura of artifice. You are asked to enter through a backdoor of theatricality and pass into hallways of reconstructed grandeur, where the once grand patrons of illustrious houses are reimagined alongside metaphysical surreal like artefacts. Through appropriating once familiar objects, old master paintings, found ornaments and etchings fallen from historical books; Bowles erases, mischievously rearranges and discretely brushes over her unwitting sitters and artefacts. Using elements of the museum, the collection and display, the works are re-contextualised, opening new interpretive possibilities. The object interacts with its context and vice versa; by playfully twisting her narratives presented in facsimiles of environments, Sasha is examining the boundaries that cross between spaces and how the display and context of objects and artworks effects our reading and engagement with it. The known becomes uncanny and challenges us to re-evaluate our interpretation and engagement of the familiar. For more information on the work of Sasha Bowles go to: https://www.sashabowles.co.ukTo Support this podcast from as little as £3 per month: www.patreon/ministryofartsIf you would like to promote your work, exhibition or any other creative project, please contact us at:Social Media: @ministryofartsorgEmail: [email protected] Hosted on Acast. Stacey has become known as the resident Gobbess of the collective, giving public talks, writing articles and generally shouting from the rooftops about sex workers’ rights. She is the author of upcoming book ‘The Ethical Stripper’ and one half of the sell-out Edinburgh Fringe show ‘Ask A Stripper’, which she performs with her work wife and fellow stripper Gypsy Charms. Stacey travels up and down the country campaigning to support strippers and establish employment rights in the sex industry wherever she goes, as well making several media appearances including Good Morning Britain, and a TedX Talk. Life Drawing with ELSC first launched in 2013 as a natural progression from the age-old practice of hiring professional harlots and hussies as models for art. Our class is fast paced and often involves high-octane aerial pole poses. We incorporate some more traditional life drawing with a couple 5, 10 and 15 minute poses. We also do an extremely popular part of the session where we get the model to get up-close and personal with 3 different artists for 5 minutes at a time. It is a nod to the “lap dance” and encourages a fun, mischievous mood throughout the class. All our models are strippers or ex-strippers. We welcome newcomers and veterans alike. Ep 207Ep.207 Opake - Ministry of Arts Podcast
EIn this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Opake(@Opake_lwi)Since the age of thirteen, Ed Worley, AKA Opake, has been fascinated with graffiti art. He was instantly enchanted with the idea that anyone could create large-scale artworks for the public to see and access, for free. At first, Opake began experimenting with tagging and later developed his artworks into monumental murals, featuring both elements of calligraphy and illustrative images. Now, he is known for depicting cherished cartoon characters in new, exciting ways, such as a glitching Mickey Mouse, or Pink Panther, situated amongst a background of skulls. This unique style is self-described as the “disintegration of pop culture”, by Opake. A key theme in his work is ‘insanity’, after having dealt with drug-induced psychosis himself. He plays with the infamous definition of ‘insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, expecting different results.`, with the creative twist of subtly breaking the repetition of his characters, replicating his own story of overcoming addiction. Having dealt with addiction for much of his life, Opake is now clean, sober, channelling this into his art. As he got better, he started to think about what addiction was to him. He realised that art could become his addiction, as he felt that it wasn’t just an illness but also, when used correctly, a gift: “In my opinion, anyone with those tendencies can easily abuse them, but if you harness that ability, it's incredible”. In addition to this, Opake also started utilising social media to gain a following around his art. He now boasts over 120K Instagram followers, and due to the connections he has made, his work has been exhibited internationally in countries such as Japan, Mexico and the United States. For more information on the work of Opake go tohttps://www.opake-art.com/To Support this podcast from as little as £3 per month: www.patreon/ministryofartsFor full line up of confirmed artists go to https://www.ministryofarts.orgEmail: [email protected] Media: @ministryofartsorg Hosted on Acast. Ep 202Ep.202 Alice Mara - Ministry of Arts Podcast
EIn this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Alice Mara (@alicemaraceramics)Alice has spent her career developing the relationship between form, function and decoration, and has an insatiable appetite for new challenges. She experimented with printing methods before perfecting the art of realising photography in three dimensions, a complex and painstaking process. Her previous work features the architecture of London, Brighton and Eastbourne, capturing the colour, culture and character of these places. Her ceramic pieces offer a narrative of the lives led in these towns which, through the subtle use of symbolism, hint at the emotional backdrop of the residents.Alice views the hallmarks of a ‘great work of art’ as being well made, functional and conveying a message or aesthetic that provokes a pleasant reaction. The loss of her father from her family life has informed Alice’s latest work in bespoke ceramic houses, which she hopes will help crystallize other people’s precious memories of family and home.“There is something so wonderful in watching the enjoyment of my clients as we prepare a ceramic home in secret, especially for their loved one.”When she is not busy working in her studio, Alice loves to travel, and finds inspiration in foreign architecture and urban patterns. She is also a seasoned stand-up comedian - and not the only one with a degree in Ceramics (Johnny Vegas has one too). It’s no surprise that Alice’s clients always walk away with a smile on their face. For more information on the work of Alice Mara go tohttps://www.alicemara.com/To Support this podcast from as little as £3 per month: www.patreon/ministryofartsFor full line up of confirmed artists go to https://www.ministryofarts.orgEmail: [email protected] Media: @ministryofartsorg Hosted on Acast. Ep 201Ep.201 Tim Allen - Ministry of Arts Podcast
EIn this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Tim Allen (@timallenshots)"My work over the last six to seven years has attempted to draw together a number of disparate, sometimes contradictory, formal elements and subjects or themes that have all featured in my work over the last forty five years at different times. I hope that the paintings are more than the sum of their parts and that they can generate a broad response in whoever’s looking at them, emotionally and intellectually. I don’t want to limit this response by trying to define their ‘content’ too rigidly".Born 1950 Manchester, bought up in Durham City. Education: University of Newcastle upon Tyne (68-72) and Goldsmiths (78-80).Since 1968, has exhibited widely in the UK and Europe. Ep 200Ep.200 Jake Chapman - Ministry of Arts Podcast
EIn this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Jake Chapman (@jakechapwoman)Working together with his older brother, Dinos Chapman, Young British Artist Jake Chapman has been producing installations, sculptures, paintings, and works on paper since the early 1990s that appall, anger, seduce, and thrill—often simultaneously. An iconoclast to his core, Chapman describes himself as a collection of “traitorous little traits that add up to make the big deplorable trait that is me, me, me.” Such tongue-in-cheek humor underpins all of his work, through which he confronts the horrors and excesses of history, culture, politics, and religion with an unforgiving aesthetic. He does not shy away from representations of sex, violence, and mutilation. In Fucking Hell (2008), for example, he and his brother created an immense tabletop tableau representing the 20th century as a grotesque, apocalyptic warscape.Bio c/o www.artsy.netFor more information on the work of Jake Chapman go tohttps://heimlich.co.uk/To Support this podcast from as little as £3 per month: www.patreon/ministryofartsFor full line up of confirmed artists go to https://www.ministryofarts.orgEmail: [email protected] Media: @ministryofartsorg Hosted on Acast.
