In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Alice Mara (@alicemaraceramics)Alice has spent her career developing the relationship between form, function and decoration, and has an insatiable appetite for new challenges. She experimented with printing methods before perfecting the art of realising photography in three dimensions, a complex and painstaking process. Her previous work features the architecture of London, Brighton and Eastbourne, capturing the colour, culture and character of these places. Her ceramic pieces offer a narrative of the lives led in these towns which, through the subtle use of symbolism, hint at the emotional backdrop of the residents.Alice views the hallmarks of a ‘great work of art’ as being well made, functional and conveying a message or aesthetic that provokes a pleasant reaction. The loss of her father from her family life has informed Alice’s latest work in bespoke ceramic houses, which she hopes will help crystallize other people’s precious memories of family and home.“There is something so wonderful in watching the enjoyment of my clients as we prepare a ceramic home in secret, especially for their loved one.”When she is not busy working in her studio, Alice loves to travel, and finds inspiration in foreign architecture and urban patterns. In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Jake Chapman (@jakechapwoman)Working together with his older brother, Dinos Chapman, Young British Artist Jake Chapman has been producing installations, sculptures, paintings, and works on paper since the early 1990s that appall, anger, seduce, and thrill—often simultaneously. An iconoclast to his core, Chapman describes himself as a collection of “traitorous little traits that add up to make the big deplorable trait that is me, me, me.” Such tongue-in-cheek humor underpins all of his work, through which he confronts the horrors and excesses of history, culture, politics, and religion with an unforgiving aesthetic. He does not shy away from representations of sex, violence, and mutilation.  In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Tony Grounds (@tony.grounds) Tony Grounds (born in East London) is a British playwright and screenwriter, who has worked extensively in television.  Described by The Independent as "the best TV writer of his generation", Grounds has written for all four of Britain's main channels. He started writing for the theatre, winning the Verity Bargate Award for Made in Spain. There then followed stints on EastEnders and The Bill before he penned episodes of 'Chancer', which starred Clive Owen. Grounds created and wrote Gone to the Dogs starring Jim Broadbent, Alison Steadman, Warren Clarke and Harry Enfield. It was nominated for a Writers Guild Award. He wrote Gone to Seed, in which Peter Cook made his final dramatic appearance.  The single film Our Boy with Ray Winstone and Pauline Quirke won Tony International Acclaim winning the Munich International Drama Award. He wrote Sex and Chocolate for Dawn French before writing the award-winning and BAFTA nominated Births Marriages & Deaths, once again starring Ray Winstone. Grounds wrote a one-off episode for BBC Drama, Our Girl, starring Michelle Keegan.  Following its success, the BBC commissioned 5 further episodes.  Apart from writing the series, Grounds was also executive producer of the series together with Caroline Skinner.  Grounds is special advisor for Save the Children and ran the London Marathon with Lee Evans in 2010. She has been a tattoo artist for fifteen years and a professional fine artist for three, sharing her experiences through art to collectors all over the country. Since her late diagnosis of autism a few years ago, she has been exploring how it influences her life and the journey of others.her art is inspired by human experience, symbolism, body language, neuroscience, and hand art history, exploring the deeper meaning of hand positioning and conveying a message. She adores learning about people and their life journeys before undertaking a commission, which she believes enriches each piece of artwork to the highest level.Imbedded in art history, hands have had many hidden meanings with their specific gestures, showing many emotions and conveying life stories within their subtle lines. When she was a child, her parents owned a beautiful Alphons Mucha print called “Catherine”. She had the most delicate hands, and Alice was always fascinated with the simple depiction. In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Fandangoe Kid (@fandangoekid)The fandangoe kid is a London based print artist who makes large-scale narrative driven pieces for the public realm. Her work seeks to smash taboos around complex subject matters such as loss, trauma release, mental health and gender constructs.The artist has created work for a wide range of purposes, for example with her ‘Staircase of Dreams’ for London Design Festival 2020, working with young people to develop a collective narrative on daily activism.During the first lockdown, The Fandangoe Kid redesigned nurse’s scrubs for Marie Curie x NHS London, working with a palliative care nurse via Zoom to develop the uniform, celebrating International Year of the Nurse.The Fandangoe Kid also works in film and screened her first short Into Your Light, directed with Tara Darby, at Tate Modern and on the Manhattan Bridge, looking at dancing as a tool for survival following great personal loss.For summer 2021, Annie launched The Fandangoe Whip, an ice cream van for mental health. In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Tom Waugh (@tomwaughsculptor) With a background in classical stone sculpture, Tom Waugh uses traditional materials and techniques to create contemporary works of art. Stone and marble sculptures, carved in minute detail, depict waste objects, discarded in the wake of human consumption. The objects document the casual imprints of human use. Plastic bags, cardboard boxes and tin cans are squashed, crushed and wrinkled whilst still displaying the traces of mass production. Some of the sculptures are life size, others are larger than life, and some appear, like fossils, emerging from the pristine rock. Materials are carefully chosen to achieve realism: white marble takes on the appearance of plastic or polystyrene, ironstone becomes rusty metal and Portland Stone is transformed into crumpled cardboard. In Toms Sculptures there are echoes of classical and baroque statuary. He studied closely the techniques whereby marble could be carved to look like flesh, hair or fabric, and in his own work, evokes the same qualities of form and surface texture. Despite his use of traditional materials and techniques, there are tensions and contradictions in Toms work: between classical and contemporary art; between temporality and permanence; and between humour and serious environmental and social issues. In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Beth Cullen Kerridge (@bethcullenkerridge)Beth Cullen Kerridge studied at John Moores in Liverpool, and on to postgrad at the Royal College of Art, which was a springboard on to the London art scene, with two of the London Parks Showing her work consecutively.She then showed in many exhibitions in the capital and around England, Commercial site-specific sculpture for her home town of Stoke on Trent.She honed her craft working in foundries and producing works for Edwardo Paolozzi, Elisabeth Frink and Alberto Giacometti.For eight years she was lucky enough to work closely as a Studio Assistant with the legendary Mike Bolus, for another champion Sir Anthony Caro.  In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Rankin (@rankinarchive) Rankin is a British photographer, publisher, and film director. Alongside being head of the eponymous agency RANKIN, which hosts an 80+ strong team that puts strategy, creative and production all under one roof.  Through RANKIN, he is best known for work that is on the cultural cusp and leading future trends: producing rule-breaking campaigns for brands such as Rolls Royce, Unilever, L’Oreal and Samsonite; creating wide reaching projects for charities including Women’s Aid and Macmillan; and shooting music videos for the likes of Miley Cyrus, Rita Ora and Kelis. As a photographer Rankin’s portfolio ranges from portraiture to documentary. In this bonus episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Cathy Verney of the Worthing PAOTY (@thevenuewpaoty)The Worthing Portrait Artist of the Year will be an exciting evening of live portraiture.This year will see a limited number of 9 local portrait artists being offered the chance to create in public. Selected artists will each produce a portrait of one of 3 sitters over the course of an evening. The event will be open to the public. Sitters will be announced in due course.This not-to-be-missed event will be open to all. Members of the public will be able to observe the artists at work, and watch as portraits take shape before their eyes. The portraits will be judged by a panel, and a favourite selected along with two runners up. The sitters will also choose their favourite, a copy of which will be made for them to take home.The finalists’ portraits will be used for marketing and will be exhibited on the website and social media prior to the event. In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Trish Wylie (@trishwylieartist) Trish Wylie has been painting for more than 30 years and is currently based in London. Her latest work is inspired by themes of gender and nature. She also explores the use of multiple mediums from collage to re-visiting watercolour on large scale canvas. Alongside this is her interest in Jungian theory (animus/anima) which she explores in her latest James Bond and Lipstick series. Her most recent watercolours have been a result of continual re-working with a medium that could be argued has been ignored and dismissed and we she has used to huge effect on works based on her travels to the Mojave Desert. Trish was born in South London and attended Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts. Soon after graduating she moved with her family of two to the South West of England. Whilst there she held several part time teaching posts, and exhibited in London and the South West. In 2010 she returned to London where she continues to work and exhibit. Simmons work explores the intersections of visual culture, spanning pop art, comic books, the Renaissance, contemporary fashion, sexuality and beyond. London-based Rich Simmons has a global reach and celebrity following, having exhibited in some of the world’s most prestigious galleries, in London, New York, LA, Tampa, Miami, Toronto and Geneva. Simmons work has now made it into Museum collections with the Men Of Steel, Women Of Wonder exhibition debuting at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in 2019.  Simmons bold use of colour, intricately detailed hand-cut stencils, sense of humour and thought-provoking narratives running through his work are proving Rich is both an innovator and highly collectible artist. In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Kate Knight (@knightpainter)Kent based artist Kate Knight works primarily with figurative imagery.Within the drawn explorations of nature, Knight's concerns are upon the aesthetics of desire, sex and death. The works are provocative, playful, harsh and tongue in cheek. The compositions establish a series of graphic signs, aiming to evoke a narrative whether epic or fleeting.The current developments juxtapose a darker underbelly, presenting unease; as well as the guardianship of something sacred. This response is loaded with a sense of otherness, something beyond the ordinary; a dystopian landscape. Knight currently works in biro as well as painting and sculpture. The use of biro on such a large scale is labour intensive; enabling very fine detail and presenting an etched like quality. In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Sara Pope (@sarapopeartist) Contemporary artist Sara Pope is best known for her bold, seductive paintings of voluptuous lips. Taking inspiration from a successful career in the fashion industry as a shoe designer for brands such as Paul Smith, and also her work in magazines as a designer and art director, Sara aims to capture the sensuality and seductive power conveyed by the lips and mouth. Interested in questions of beauty, communication, and the notion of perfection, Sara uses the perspective of her commercial experience to explore these themes. The starting point is a makeup brush and a lipstick. She paints the models’ lips, then, using tricks and techniques of makeup and lighting, she begins the process of creating the perfect lips. She asks the model, to express different emotions which she captures photographically. Using these shots as inspiration she begins the artwork. The painting process involves several layers of thin oil-diluted paint being overlaid, blending and smoothing the colours extensively at every stage, sometimes also mixing lipstick into the paint. Encouragingly, some people have paid actual money to acquire his stuff, which is a surprise both to him and his friends and family, who cheer from the sidelines with a bemused, and slightly annoyed look on their faces.  As creator of the ‘Dark Therapy’ style, The Misfortune Teller delivers painfully honest truths across a variety of mediums, from ink on paper to balloon sculptures on rooftops, from brutally honest memorial plaques screwed onto park benches in the dead of night, to teabags inscribed with demotivational messages. In this bonus episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Miss Bugs (@miss_bugs)Miss Bugs was founded in the early part of 2007, originally coming from a background in photography and graphics. Working in partnership, they developed fast, spontaneous working methods, cutting and pasting existing images; ‘remixing and sampling classics’ in art to make new pieces with their own mark.Miss Bugs began in the early days making small scale works on paper, using screen printing with hand painted elements. They then scaled the work up, making life size cut outs of characters to place in situ on the streets of London. These were left in place to become part of the cityscape and recorded through photography.Their most recent work includes larger scale pieces, incorporating laser cut planes of wood, hundreds of small component objects and poured resin. These pieces are time consuming and labour intensive, and a long way from the quickly constructed art pieces of the early days. Miss Bugs has always taken a broad and varied approach to creating work. The combining of materials and objects, alongside the way contemporary imagery can be collaged together, either by hand, through photography, or using a digital process is important.The focus of the work has always been the human form; as Miss Bugs’ interest lies in developing ‘characters’ to tell a story. Archetypal imagery from magazines, art history and films are used as a starting point, which are then cut, overlaid and distorted to produce character portraits with an arresting graphic look. The influence of collage artists like Hannah Höch can clearly be seen in the work.  In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Adam Brigland (@adam_bridgland) Since graduating from the Royal College of Art in 2006, Bridgland has used a diverse range of materials and working methods to pursue an incisive and often witty exploration of distinctively British sentiments, externalising the underlying sense of loss and nostalgia that permeates our memories. Vignettes of British back-packer’s holidays, old-fashioned bus-tours, and childhood seaside breaks that figure strongly in his visual repertoire are often tinged with this feeling of time having passed too quickly, our memories gradually fading. Twinned with this however, is an upbeat celebration of themes distilled from children’s colouring books, paint-by-numbers kits, old public transport posters and kitsch postcards, which he imbues with the kaleidoscopic richness of carefully chosen and thickly applied primary colours. These everyday, almost mundane subjects are treated with the importance and status of emblems; centred in each work and often encapsulated within related text or target-like circular borders that focus our gaze. Whether descriptive of change or constancy, Bridgland’s work keys into our desire to remember and relive, and plays upon our tendency to elevate our shared memories with the rose-tinted, wistful spectacles we don when thinking of the past, as well as the future. His depictions of identity and belonging, nostalgia and emotion give to his work a hugely personal aspect, and are influenced by a graphic and visual tradition that is quite specific to Britain. Yet his subtle combinations of image and related text play on everyone’s perceptions of shared occasions. In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Gavin Turk (@thisisnotgavinturk) Gavin Turk (b 1967) is a British born, international artist. He has pioneered many forms of contemporary British sculpture now taken for granted, including the painted bronze, the waxwork, the recycled art-historical icon and the use of rubbish in art. Turk’s installations and sculptures deal with issues of authorship, authenticity and identity. Concerned with the ‘myth’ of the artist and the ‘authorship’ of a work, Turk’s engagement with this modernist, avant-garde debate stretches back to the ready-mades of Marcel Duchamp. In 1991, the Royal College of Art refused Turk a degree on the basis that his final show, ‘Cave’, consisted of a whitewashed studio space containing only a blue heritage plaque commemorating his presence ‘Gavin Turk worked here 1989-91'. Instantly gaining notoriety through this installation, Turk was spotted by Charles Saatchi and was included in several YBA exhibitions. Turk’s work has since been collected and exhibited by many major museums and galleries throughout the world.    Kensington + Chelsea Art Week (KCAW) is delighted to present its fifth annual Public Art Trail. In this bonus episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Maya Sanbar (@mayasanbar) Maya is an Artist and Filmmaker. Her work in both moving image and installation is centred on the art of storytelling. Footsteps on the Wind is her directorial debut in the narrative and animation world. Her experience is varied, her artworks being often collaborative and enabling of others adding their voices to a central theme. In relation to this film, aside from her own family refugee history, she sought out the depth of emotional truth within refugee stories via therapy workshops, ensuring that this is a film about refugees, told by refugees, for refugees and the general public young and old. As a multimedia artist, her work has been exhibited internationally, notably installations at Shoreditch Town Hall in London “Waiting” 2015, the Rubin Museum of Art in New York City “Alex in Wonderland” scented experience (2016), and at the Berlin Wall on the 30th anniversary of its fall “Chasing the Light” (2019), “Words on the Hill” at the Coronet Theatre in London (2020). Her film production credits include 360 immersion visits to artist studios and documentaries. In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Lise Bouissière (@lisebouissiere) Lise Bouissière is a Franco-British artist. She graduated from Central Saint Martins School (London) and Villa Arson (Nice, France). Bouissière is a Royal Society of Sculptors member. Over the past ten years, she has shown in solo and group shows across the United Kingdom and Italy, including at The Royal Society of Sculptors (2021), Aora Space (2021), Koppel Exchange Project (2020 and 2021), The Crypt Gallery (2021), Gerald Moore Gallery (2020), The Smallest Gallery in Soho (2019), Villa Arson (2014), Palais de Tokyo (2016). Bouissière also took part in Venice land Biennale (2019) and Monaco’s music festival (2011). Bouissiere’s practice focuses on the optimisation of space and the use of materials. Through a distinct construction of ideas, found materials are played with to create minimalist and honest compositions. Bouissière’s structures reveal a memory, a current state or a hidden side of a place with the elements that surround it. In many cases, the place Bouissière constructs her art is transformed like a mental space, offering the viewer a large panel of interpretations. Kipling makes fine art pieces in ceramic, in paint, in print, in film, or in fact any medium most able to deliver each concept in question with assurance and panache. Kipling has also worked for over a decade in the Secondary Art Market, as a General Specialist in Fine Art Paintings, Prints and Sculpture. In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Duncan McAfee (@duncanmcafee) McAfee essentially approaches painting as a game. He arranges figurative and abstract elements from art and visual culture to make hybrid paintings, brightly coloured, comic-book exquisite-corpses. His recent Exploding Heads series could be portraits of the mad prophets of some post apocalyptic cult. Constructed from broken fragments of other images, misremembered or misquoted, like Russell Hoban’s Punch puppet in the novel Ridley Walker. McAfee draws on Hoban, “the way Punch is misappropriated and all wrong is funny and grotesque but the weight and meaning it takes on is also deeply affecting. I want to try and get close to that conflict of feelings in my paintings”. This collage style evokes a surrealist “chance encounter” but also perhaps like Burroughs’ cut-ups, a form of time travel. McAfee’s influences range from Nigel Cooke’s recurring characters, George Condo’s Psychological Cubism, revisiting Francis Bacon, the fanaticism of classical religious painting, and also outsider Ralph Bakshi’s animation and recent paintings of clowns and mobsters. McAfee’s painting technique plays back and forth between very loose chance actions and tight, illustrative drawing/painting. This creates a tension that makes us unsure if the image is in the process of forming or breaking apart. In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Keira Rathbone (@typewriterart)Keira Rathbone is an established fine artist living and working in London. She grew up in Dorset, gained a BA (hons) in Fine Art at the University of the West of England, Bristol. Since 2003 she has developed a unique drawing technique, employing a manual typewriter as a drawing tool.Rathbone draws images from life using her typewriter, instinctively translating what she sees into an array of letters, number and symbols chosen for their shape and textural values resulting in beautiful enigmatic images that encourage the viewer to keep looking from different distances, reading more into it each time. She develops and exhibits images based around compelling themes and often incorporates live audio/visual performances by typing before an audience with video projection, sound effects and collaborations with other artists.Her art is used to reflect the world and people around her, capturing moments through this artistic and accessible medium. Typewriter Art does not overcomplicate but allows a moment to be depicted and celebrated in a true snapshot of beauty and poignancy.She has appeared numerous times on television, including BBC News, BBC World News, The One Show and SKY Landscape Artist of the Year as well as BBC Radio 2, 4 and 6Music. She currently has an original hanging with short film and typewriter exhibited alongside in the National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh. Dion is using the space as a gallery to show artists from the West Midlands and to show his own work and archive. Having graduated in 2020 with BA Fine Art from Birmingham School of Art, he has since been awarded numerous prizes, including the Tate prize and the ACS studio prize. All with backgrounds in the physical sciences, we place a heavy emphasis on research and development. Our projects are driven by the desire to understand the core components of intriguing, complex and beautiful natural phenomena. Each artwork aims to make tangible the intangible, and invites the audience to use all their senses to experience a new perception of the environment. The observation of nature shows that the beauty of physical events is often the result of the strict rules of physics combined with the randomness of our chaotic environment. Our work aims to find the delicate balance between what technology can control and what randomness can disrupt, to build objects and spaces that are relatable yet surprising. Our research into micro and macro natural phenomena and our desire to work with these in new ways often leads to the development of novel electrical and mechanical technologies. In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Pure Evil (@pureevilgallery)Pure Evil was born Charles Uzzell Edwards in South Wales in 1968. He grew up in a world of art thanks to his father, Welsh painter John Uzzell Edwards . The father’s artwork undoubtedly impacted his son, demonstrated in a range of influences from Cubism to Minimalism, from Picasso to Chagall.The physical and cultural landscape of the 1990’s U.S. intrigued and beckoned the young Pure Evil, and upon completing his studies in graphics and fashion in London he picked up his skateboard and set off for California’s West Coast. He established himself in San Francisco, working for the Anarchic Adjustment clothing label as a clothing designer / pattern cutter / graphic designer. He produced countless t-shirt graphics for screen printing, dropped in on the West Coast rave scene, and travelled to Japan where West Coast Streetwear was a hot item. It has evolved to confront power and war across the globe.The work is made for the street, the gallery, the web, newspapers & magazines, and to lead workshops that develop peoples’ skills and help them express their thoughts on what’s happening in the world through visual means. In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Paul Kneen (@paulkneenart) Art allows me to be free. It takes me on unexpected journeys not just within my creative process but through the opportunities art has presented along the way. Street art was one of those journeys. It opened my eyes to a whole new world of splats, drips and spray paint. It gave me the confidence to be more creative, more experimental and to have more fun. Through the likes of Banksy and co I also realised that art could make a statement. This sparked something inside me so, much of my work is based around social/political issues such as animal poaching, rich/poor divide, political incompetency etc, but refusing to be pigeon-holed, I experiment with style, technique and medium allowing the process to evolve. For me that’s when the exciting, unplanned things happen.
