Named the 2022 Man of the Year by Men in the Arena, Mike Goins will be 76 next month and is an avid snow skier, road biker, and golfer. This guy has lived a noteworthy life worth learning from and imitating. Mike spent his career as the CFO of four Universities retiring in 2011. Since then, Mike served as a volunteer with CASA, Friendsview Retirement Community, Young Life, his local Church, and Men in the Arena where he has served as Board Chair and Treasurer. He also leads two Men in the Arena teams—one local and one virtual. When he isn't volunteering he is an avid snow skier, recently teaching his granddaughters how to ski. He rides thousands of miles annually with his bike club and is a regular on the golf course that butts up to his backyard. He is a mentor and father figure to me and many others. Joel Van Der Loon shares about his experience of being alone in the wild and what it taught him. Joel's experience in the outdoors began from childhood growing up in South Africa and Tanzania, East Africa - in particular, living off the grid on an isolated stretch of tropical coastline of wild bush, hosting an array of animal species. I spent 12 years traveling the world through 40 countries and crossing oceans as a professional crew member, exploring some of the world's most remote locations by sea. I have hiked, camped, and paddled in just about every type of ecosystem and trained in desert, alpine, jungle, and temperate survival methods. I have put myself into testing conditions with little more than a knife, water bottle, and the clothes on my back. I believe that there is no substitute for teaching from a position of real-life experience. Joel started training people in 2015 in San Diego- California on the Los Coyotes Indian reservation. He taught folks from all walks of life including military, fire-fighters, boy scouts, school kids, celebrities, physically disabled, and contestants of survival shows. He was a participant on Episode 3 of Discovery channels Bushcraft Build-Off and History channels Alone season 7. Joel and his family moved up to Central Oregon in 2018. I have noticed something in guys that attend the church that I want to address. Since our target is men in the stress bubble of 28-55 years old this will be very helpful. Biblically speaking every Christian is a minister and every minister has a ministry. Here is the problem I want to address. It is the man who does not serve others because, as he puts it, his family is his ministry. THIS IS ADMIRABLE and THIS STATEMENT PUTS HIM IN AN ELITE CLASS OF MEN. But here is the lie. God has called ALL MEN are ministers to the family. This is a biblical mandate to love, lead and serve the family unit. The Biblical Mandate is DIFFERENT from your Personal Mission. Jerry Schemmel is a survivor of United Airlines flight 232 that crashed landed on July 19, 1989. Jerry grew up in Madison, SD, with his six siblings. He attended Washburn University in Topeka, KS where he played on the baseball team. After receiving his undergraduate degree in Communications in 1982, Jerry went to law school at Washburn University School of Law and earned his Juris Doctor in 1985. He has been both an assistant baseball coach and head coach, at the college level. He spent 10 seasons as a radio broadcaster for the Colorado Rockies, after 18 seasons in the same role with the Denver Nuggets. Jerry Schemmel wrote two books. First, Chosen To Live, from 1996 that chronicles his experience from surviving the crash of Flight 232. And The Extravagant Gift, as an outreach book. Inspiration for our 65k Push-Up Challenge! This interview will be a huge inspiration for you on your push-up journey. Rod Handley inspired our challenge! Rod had Stage 4 cancer, and was so weak that he couldn't do a single push-up, but then decided he was going to do 200 per day, 6 days per week. By the end of the year, he was cranking out 200 strict push-ups! This is a must-listen. Rod Handley is the Founder & President of Character that Counts, a ministry established in 2000. Rod speaks all across the nation to men, women and teenagers about character, integrity and accountability issues. He has written over 30 books including "Character Counts: Who's Counting Yours?" which details the "why's" and "how's" of accountability. For over 35 years, Rod has shared at hundreds of men's events, conferences and retreats all across the nation. From 1986-1999, he served on the staff of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, including 11 years as the COO/CFO. He has also spoken at hundreds of chapel services for a number of NFL, NBA and MLB teams, including serving as team chaplain for the Kansas City Royals (1995-2009) and the Seattle SuperSonics (1986-89). If you hit the 65,000 push-up goal before midnight December 31, 2022, you have officially slayed this challenge. At the end of the year, you'll send photos of your completed calendar. We'll send you a certificate of completion and some commemorative merch (still figuring that part out, but we've got some cool ideas). FAQs and Housekeeping Stuff: Q: Do they have to be strict push-ups? A: No. They can be strict, knee, wall, box, incline - I don't care what you do as long as you do it. The guy who inspired this challenge started out unable to do a single push-up and by the end he was knocking out 200 a day. Challenge yourself and improve. Q: Do I need to videotape myself to prove I did them? A: Nah, honor system. You'll send us photos of your calendar for accountability more than anything. If you give me your word of honor that you did them, I'll believe you. Q: I did 64,999 push-ups because [insert excuse here]. Can I still get my certificate, merch, etc.? A: No participation trophies. Q: What inspired this challenge? Where did the number 65,000 come from? A: This challenge was inspired by my friend Rod Handley from Character that Counts. He was recovering from a rare form of cancer and decided to do 200 push-ups per day, 6 days per week and came up with that 65k goal. At first he couldn't do a single push-up, but by the end of the year he was cranking out 200 a day. If he can do it, so can you!
