1621 || finding purpose at an all you can eat buffet

E

Finding your purpose in life is like finding your favorite food at a brand new "all you can eat" buffet. You arrive hungry and excited, and everything looks pretty delicious. You try to fit a little bit of everything on your plate. You try tiny nibbles and some disappoint. Others surprise. Others are what you expect. And when it’s time to go back up and try new things you know a littttle more and lose a lil initial excitement so you grab a lil of the things you missed the first time and so on. You keep tasting and trying. And you get pickier as you go. Recognize what isn’t salted enough for you. What isn’t spicy enough. What’s too spicy. You get more of what works and less of what doesn’t. Until eventually you get a full plate of all the things you love. When you eventually get hungry again and return to the buffet line? You’ll know. But you can’t be mad you didn’t know on your first plate. Sure, you technically "wasted" room on the plate that could’ve been more mashed potato or whatever but you didn’t know you liked the potato that much and if you started with a big plate of mash you’d be so jealous everyone else took a bite of something you hadn’t tried yet. Now you know. So when you go and get the cake you know you love the most, and return to the table to find your mom loving her portion of the cobbler, you’ve already tried it yourself. You don’t resent her for having cobbler you recognize you can get up at any time and get some. But right now you chose cake. And you know, you can always change it up for yourself in the future. The buffet of life is abundant. Don't get caught up in counting calories. Don't get caught up worrying about making the best choice. Don't get caught up optimizing your perfect meal. Instead, try things. Get curious... and then get picky.Never forget: you have so many options. 1619 || stop overthinking yourself

E

"I think about myself a lot, and not in a good way. I find myself obsessing over past mistakes, cringey moments, etc. and end up feeling guilty and panicked. Eventually I end up concluding that I'm a terrible person who deserves to be feeling this way." Here is the Original Post on the Meditation Reddit: Read the Substack from Soft Perception who said: "the self is not optional. it is yours to inhabit, not theirs to consume. and it will begin to show up when the hand of obligation loosens, when attention turns inward.the floor may feel far below, but every step you take, every boundary you establish, every small act of attention or creation, lays the ground you were never given."SUPPORT JULIE (and the show!)DONATE to the Palestinian Children's Relief Fund AND THE Sudan Relief FundGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM AND YOUTUBESUBSCRIBE FOR BONUS CONTENT ON PATREON.The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 1618 || we’re in a self-objectification crisis

E

Understanding your identity is honestly, none of your business. Don't attach yourself to an identity, because identity, is inherently limiting to it's understood definition. Some of us are trying to fit in where we don't belong, and we wonder why we're uncomfortable. Watch the full aurora quote: " It’s easy to feel safe in yourself when you stop analyzing yourself. And let go of the fact that people may be analyzing you. And let go go the control that we feel like we need to have another’s impression of us, it doesn’t matter. Be open, live freely."Read the Substack from Soft Perception who said: "the self is not optional. it is yours to inhabit, not theirs to consume. and it will begin to show up when the hand of obligation loosens, when attention turns inward.the floor may feel far below, but every step you take, every boundary you establish, every small act of attention or creation, lays the ground you were never given."Try Huel with 15% OFF for New Customers today using code MYDB at https://huel.com/mydb. SUPPORT JULIE (and the show!)DONATE to the Palestinian Children's Relief Fund AND THE Sudan Relief FundGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM AND YOUTUBESUBSCRIBE FOR BONUS CONTENT ON PATREON.The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 1617 || if your screen is your kingdom

E

Some of us don’t engage with the rest of the world anymore not because the rest of the world sucks any more than it always has - but because you have built an intolerance for the world where you are not the dictator. As Siece Campbell put it, “your algorithm worships you. You are the only one who lives inside this tiny box, let’s say you’re spending 7+ hours on your phone every day, well those are hours that we used to spend in a reality in a world that didn’t revolve around you.”We should all be worried about the rise of selfishness as a society because of an increase in addiction to convenience, isolation, comfort, and personal pleasure. She basically posits that we’re becoming so insulated from society that we’re becoming intolerant of the things that can actually bring us long term pleasure. 1616 || how to do hard things

E

The brain’s main goal is to protect us, so when we ask it to do anything new (particularly if you are neurodivergent) it signals to the brain that there may be danger lurking - so it refuses to do it, because it believes that is what keeps us safe. Many brains looks at all new tasks like a hot stove. So how do we manage this? According to kdimerc we can:Remove all unnecessary stoves. Look at the task objectively and ask yourself, “is this task really necessary or important?” If it’s not - take it off the burner completely, for now. Turn off the stove, if you are able to! This will be different for everyone, but it’s typically the things I suggest on this podcast to help you get motivated. Things like body doubling, brain hacks, pairing actions with other triggers, like this podcast, or songs, therapy and medication may help to turn off, or at least, turn down the heat on these stoves. Get really good at touching hot stoves. Like we have been discussing recently on the podcast, building your tolerance for distress is seemingly less and less optional at this point. But unfortunately there will be times where you can’t ignore a task, and you can’t make it less daunting, so you just have to power through the dread and do it anyway. While you may not be able to control your motivation to do a daunting task, you can control your mindset around it. You can come to accept the dread as part of the process. Watch Kdimerc’s video on the "Hot Stove Conundrum" Read Beautiful Chaos’ blog post on "ADHD + The Hot Stovetop" Try Huel with 15% OFF for New Customers today using code MYDB at https://huel.com/mydb. 1613 || running from your shadow makes it bigger

E

"Living systems theory has been so helpful to me. I think there is a drive within living systems to complexify, to wake up—there is an evolutionary movement. I speak out of the love and excitement generated by my little work, which many people are doing with me. It does require being able to experience pain. It does require tears and outrage. It does require positive disintegration. Our whole culture needs positive disintegration. It has to die to itself. So my Christian upbringing is relevant there: Good Friday and Easter, the necessity for death and rebirth. We are going to die as a culture, and it’s better for us to do it consciously, so we don’t inflict it on everyone else." - Joanna Macy The main source: https://www.activehope.info/Read the interview with Joanna Macy. 1612 || the great unraveling

E

Today we talk about what Joanna Macy and Chris Johnstone's book Active Hope. Specifically the three stages of dealing with the current crisis. “Business as Usual” - Those who refuse to change. The people that believe that the current system is the best or only way. “The Great Unravelling” - Those who are inundated with despair about the fact that people are still in "business as usual" mode. The people that believe that the world is in serious decline + feel hopeless + helpless. “The Great Turning” - Those who are working “to transition from a doomed economy of industrial growth to a life-sustaining society committed to the recovery of our world.”Where are you? I waffle between 1, 2, and 3 seemingly all the time, but I spend most of my time in 2. Read the first few chapters of the book ACTIVE HOPE. 1610 || break some rules for justice

E

"Perhaps the greatest failure of liberal democracies is their historical failure to successfully protect the vital economic and security interests of their less advantaged citizens through their institutions.""It is a cruel irony that this great promise of democracy is rarely realized in practice.""The job of trade unions, parties, and even radical social movements is precisely to institutionalize unruly protest and anger. Their function is, one might say, to try to translate anger, frustration, and pain into a coherent political program that can be the basis of policy making and legislation.""As Martin Luther King, Jr., noted, “a riot is the language of the unheard.” Large-scale disruption, riot, and spontaneous defiance have always been the most potent political recourse of the poor. Such activity is not without structure. It is structured by informal, self-organized, and transient networks of neighborhood, work, and family that lie outside the formal institutions of politics. This is structure alright, just not the kind amenable to institutionalized politics."JAMES C. SCOTT - TWO CHEERS FOR ANARCHISMMore from James C. 1608 || when rules are meant to be broken

E

It's that time again, where we take a step back and check in with the cop in our heads. “One day you will be called upon to break a big law in the name of justice and rationality. Everything will depend on it. You have to be ready. How are you going to prepare for that day when it really matters? You have to stay "in shape" so that when the big day comes you will be ready. What you need is "anarchist calisthenics." Every day or so break some trivial law that makes no sense, even if it’s only jaywalking. Use your own head to judge whether a law is just or reasonable. That way, you'll keep trim; and when the big day comes, you'll be ready.” - James C. 1606 || buck what society says

E

Your brain does what is reliable, not what is best. It does what is safe, not what is productive. Our culture has shaped each and every one of us through rules + repetition. How has society tampered down the way you connect to your body and to others? How has society's expectations stifled you? How have our societal norms impacted the way you feel? and react? Can you buck some of those norms for a bit of nervous system regulation? If you can find a moment alone, scream. If you can find a moment to dance? Dance. Cry if you need to cry. 1600 || broke, but connected

E

You are not a failure if you’re struggling right now, though it may feel like it. But your value and worth is not reflected in your ability to pay your bills that don’t stop growing, and your ability to get up and do anything beyond work that never stops coming. Poverty is a systemic failing, not a personal failing. Remember you can’t really think straight when you’re really “broke” (I don’t use the word “broke” lightly, I genuinely think it’s the government’s attempt to break us as individuals) so don't be hard on yourself if you're not thinking straight.Use findhelp.org is an amazing website where you can type in your zip code and it will show you free or reduced-cost resources like food, housing, financial assistance, health care, and more. PLEASE Watch Kendra Austin's video on Tiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZP8DyB7xE/The incomparable Dollar Tree Dinners: https://www.youtube.com/@DollarTreeDinnersHow to make Sandwich Bread: https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZP8DyEXum/Cheap vegan friendly grocery inspiration: https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZP8DyqykN/SUPPORT JULIE (and the show!): https://supporter.acast.com/make-your-damn-bedDONATE to the Palestinian Children's Relief Fund: www.pcrf.netGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. How might this reaction connect to your community’s historical or ancestral experiences?Finding Ventral Vagal: What people, places, or practices help you feel safe and connected? How can you incorporate more of these in daily life, especially when fear in society is high? From Reaction to Response: Recall a time you reacted in anger or froze up around an authoritarian figure/stressor. With compassion for yourself, consider how, if you had felt more grounded or supported, you might have responded differently? Think about a good joke. If you knew the punchline right away? It's less funny. If you had to have the punchline explained? Less funny. But if you understood the punchline within a few moments, and got the satisfaction of "realization" in real time? That makes a BANGER of a joke. It's all about the appropriate level of challenge and thinking. According to Daniel Willingham's book, "Why Students Don’t Like School?" Curiosity is fragile. Learning is difficult as hell. When I’m having a rough time, trying to treat myself like I liked to treat my students, with empathy, compassion, patience, kindness, attention, care, time, etc. and in an effort to build muscles that can provide them with that empathy, compassion, patience, kindness, attention, time, care, etc. for themselves? 1592 || consulting with love + logic

E

Instead of trying to control others, become a consultant. "Children need thoughtful guidance and firm, enforceable limits. We set those limits based on the safety of the child and how the child’s behavior affects others. Then we must maintain those limits to help children understand that they are responsible for their actions and will suffer reasonable consequences for actions that are inappropriate. However, while the parents are drawing and holding these limits, it is important for them to continue encouraging their children to think about their behavior and help them feel in control of their actions by giving choices within those limits. This is where the consultant parent comes in." Some of the lessons I prioritize, still: Stop being so hard on yourself when you’re struggling to learn or master or understand something new. You’re actually doing a great job as a learner. You’re exactly where you’re supposed to be, trying, messing up, learning. If you knew already, you wouldn’t be learning anymore. Learning is impossible to mess up, unless you give up. It’s supposed to be challenging - but that doesn’t have to mean frustrating. Take your time to be a learner. Tests are hard for some of us, but that doesn’t mean you’re dumb. Dirt in a cog is a way to embody resistance. It focuses on slowing down, jamming up, creating little bits of friction that make it difficult to keep attacking our citizens effectively. We need all types of resistance, don't think there are limits to your modes of resistance. Make fascism hard. Don't normalize the violence we're seeing. Keep showing your community + your country that you aren't going to lie down and watch it burn. You don't have to wait for one big act of revolutionary change to start pushing back. 1584 || the next best choice

E

Joy is part of the practice. When you can't find it and don't know where to start? Start small. Start by reminding yourself that joy still exists, and it's a frequency vibrating right above our heads, and if we can just poke our heads out of this damned hole, we can find it - tap into it, and use it like the resource it is. Pay attention to the glimmers that make you feel seen. The goal is to make the next best choice. Reclaim your agency by starting with fun, whimsy, and joy. 1583 || tactical frivolity (joy is our way out)

E

Tactical frivolity is what happens when you use humor, whimsy, and joy to make those in power look ridiculous. It flips the script and reclaims agency. The optics matter, the message matters, and how the message arrives matters. So get involved, stop leaning into despair, and flip that damned script. Get some joy in your resistance. It's exactly what the world needs right now. Our brains have a tendency to over-value the effect of TINY inconsequential differences when comparing options. Distinction bias is a cognitive bias that causes people to overestimate how different their options are when they compare them to each other rather than evaluating them independently, against some absolute standard. Friction is a type of resistance that leads to consideration, growth, and unique solutions. Without friction, we all flatten into the same, boring, identity. Also, friction doesn't "go away" it shifts. So, where you find a frictionless experience, it means that someone else had to take that on.Most importantly: Friction isn't the enemy. Sometimes, when you're dissociating effectively, and really "in the zone" of distraction? You can find ANY interruption to be an inconvenience. Even winning.
