Minisode 574: On leaving a long-term relationship
A few weeks ago, a long-time client of mine was wrapping up one of her sessions. I typically ask my clients at the end of a session, just like I ask my podcast guests “Anything you need to say or ask before we wrap up to make sure you feel complete?” It invites them to say anything at all, but when it comes to clients, many times they say outloud the thing that they’ve been afraid to say. “Got any advice on how to leave a long-term relationship?” She asked me. “Oh, yes. I do.” I replied. Listen in to this minisode where I talk about what I told her, which includes advice on listening to your gut instead of your trauma, the “messy middle”, and how you may always have feelings for your former partner. Minisode 570: On being the "bigger person"
EBefore we get into it, I have ONE coaching spot open for the new year! Is it you? You can read more about it HERE. Have you ever seen or heard the quote, “How you do one thing is how you do everything”? Well, I’m here to tell you that, no, it’s not. In this minisode, I’m riffing on the notion that when someone is faced with a conflict, that it’s then you find out who they “really are”, their “true colors”, or their “true character”. It’s easy to jump to deciding that someone is terrible based on how someone acts and treats you during conflict. When we see someone acting out of character, we want a reason for it. It’s unusual, and we want to make sense of it. And maybe you’ve been that person! When I was going through a terrible divorce in 2006, I was not my best self. At times I was vindictive, mean, and I lashed out. Does that make me a mean, vindictive person? No, it makes me a normally kind human being who’d just been traumatized, didn’t have the coping skills to deal with what she was going through, was in a tremendous amount of pain and fear and often was acting from that place. That will happen to all of us. I also get into the topic of compassion, both for yourself when you’re in this place, and for other people. This is NOT to say you can let people treat you badly, but you can see where they’re coming from and set boundaries. ECait Donovon returns to the podcast this week! Previously, she joined me for a conversation about burnout recovery and boundaries. In this episode we talk a little bit more about burnout, but mostly about what it means to achieve work-life balance. For those of you new to Cait, she is the host of FRIED. The Burnout Podcast, a Keynote speaker, author of the book "The Bounce-back-ability Factor" and a burnout aficionado. Cait helps us explore the evolving landscape of work-life balance, unraveling cultural shifts and emphasizing the importance of creating boundaries in a world where the lines between work and personal life have blurred. Whether you've experienced burnout or are seeking clarity on work-life equilibrium, this episode provides a roadmap to navigate burnout culture and reclaim a more harmonious life. In this episode, you’ll hear about: Burnout culture: what it is and how it shows up. (5:14) Work-life balance: the cultural shift from the natural segmentation we had between life and work and how we must now make an effort to create boundaries between work and life. (14:40) “We're trying to get more life, but we don't have the energy to do it. We think we don't have the time to do it, but that's probably not true because most of us spend an hour a day on Instagram.” (19:15) Cait answers, “What does it mean to find work-life balance?” (29:01) Burnout recovery can be a long process for some, and Cait explains why. Minisode 567: On taking accountability
I don’t watch a lot of reality TV, but I’m hooked on Selling Sunset and Selling the OC on Netflix. Of course I get drawn into the drama (and the real estate and clothes too!) but I’m very interested in how they handle conflict. Lots of throwing daggers back and forth, jockeying for who has it harder/been through worse heartache, and shaming each other. Rarely, if ever, does someone apologize. I know these shows are edited, and I think the producers might choose parts of conversations to make people out to be “characters” of themselves without showing the ore normal and even kinder sides of them. But I don’t think their behavior is that far off from reality. In this minisode I talk about some specific scenes, as well as what it might look like to circle back and clean up a “mess” that was made. If you’re ever in a similar situation– because let’s face it, we all make mistakes and behave poorly sometimes– this minisode will help. Episode 566: Andrea and Brendan on Comedy, Self-Help, and Unexpected Growth
EThis week I have for you a conversation about shit that matters with unqualified people. Yes, this special series is back! This episode features writer, actor, and podcast host of Spiritual Asshole, Brendan Fitzgibbons. Our conversation covers a range of personal experiences, humorous anecdotes, and reflections on the complexities of self-help and therapy. We also share some of our most awkward and unforgettable dating stories. If you are new to this series, these episodes are less of an interview with a guest about their expertise and more about personal experiences about a given topic. However, as you’ll hear in this episode, Brendan pushes back on the notion that he is unqualified and makes a strong case debunking the title. As it were, the episode is full of funny, endearing, and insightful back-and-forth about self-help and dating. In this episode, you’ll hear about: Brendan offers his unique perspective on the unexpected turns in the journey of personal growth. (7:17) Brendan answers the question, “Is it true that comedians tend to be the most fucked up people?” (22:31) We share the weirdest first dates we’ve been on - including Brendan’s experience on a reality TV dating show! Minisode 564: On just being a normal human
Sometimes I record minisodes that I need to hear for my own personal or professional life, and this is definitely one of them! I know a lot of you who listen to the podcast probably consume a decent amount of personal growth podcasts, books, etc. and that’s a great thing! However, the thing to watch out for is perfectionism and/or high achievement in personal growth because that can be detrimental. Some questions to ask yourself to see if this might be you: Are you consuming so much self help that you forget that it’s okay to be human? That life hurts and is hard sometimes? Do you compare where you are to others, and feel bad that you’re not where you think you’re supposed to be? Do you forget sometimes that it’s completely normal to feel like shit at times, to go through incredibly challenging seasons and not have ways to get out of it? Please remember that we don’t always have to be in a state of perpetual forward movement. Sometimes we move back, and sometimes we are still. It’s never linear. In addition, there will be times in your life where you have some or even a lot of negative self-talk. I close this minisode out with reading an excerpt from Make Some Noise about his topic, as well as a little pep talk at the end. Minisode 561: Off-loading emotions
Today’s topic is one that’s near and dear to my heart and probably yours– emotions. As someone who’s had quite a journey in this arena, I’m always looking for ways to better understand them, as well as allow emotions to run their course naturally. I’m talking more specifically about “off loading” emotions, a subject I learned more about in my Daring Way™ training. It comes specifically from Brené Brown’s book, Rising Strong, and in this episode, I’m breaking down all of the ways we avoid dealing with our emotions. At the end of the episode, I’ll also go over some ways to process emotions as well. Happy emoting! Minisode 558: Lying to yourself
Today’s minisode comes from our listener survey from earlier this year. The listener wanted me to riff on the damage lying to yourself causes. Oof, am I right? You’ll hear a theme in this episode about self-compassion. When we’re trying to move away from lying to ourselves, we need to always try and come from a place of self-kindness and compassion. In this minisode I’ll pose a very important question for you to answer, as well as suggest an exercise that you can do at home to dig deeper around this particular behavior. Get out a piece of paper, your journal, or your notes app and get to work! I also talk about self-abandonment and how it relates to this. 👀 This was such a juicy topic, thank you so much to the listener who wrote in and recommended it! http://andreaowen.com/podcast/558 Learn more about your ad choices. Minisode 555: What coaching work looks like (+ a video!)
Recently a colleague I was catching up with asked me if I still love 1:1 coaching as much as I used to and I immediately said YES, and launched into an excited monologue of why I love it so much. There was such enthusiasm in my “speech”, that I turned on the mic and camera, and made both a podcast episode and video for you. This is especially for anyone who’s been interested in working with me. You have the option to check this on video, so if you’ve ever wondered what I look like when I record a podcast episode, check it out (hint: it’s not glamorous!) You’ll hear me talk about in this minisode/video: The thing that happens when I know I’m not a good fit for someone. And I used to be this person! What’s absolutely REQUIRED in order to see changes when you hire me as your coach. What one of my most recent clients said about the ending of our coaching together. What “the work” actually entails in terms of you, the client. Some of the many things you get from working with me so we don’t need to work together forever. Minisode 552: Big Prize Energy
Last week I interviewed a journalist named Rose Hackman, who wrote a book called Emotional Labor: The Invisible Work Shaping Our Lives and How to Claim Our Power, and it got me thinking about a few things. So much so that I turned on the mic right after I got off Zoom with her, and recorded this minisode for you. First, I muse on what emotional labor looks like at work, but more specifically, as I personally reflect on my past relationships, what it looks like in romantic partnerships. I know my experience isn’t uncommon, so you may see yourself in my story. We all have patterns in our lives, and most of us have had them for decades. It’s a HUGE ask to expect yourself to see the patterns you don’t like, and just change them. There’s a lot of “messy middle”. This minisode is about identifying those patterns and hopefully coming to a decision about what you’ll accept… and for the things that have become unacceptable, or what I call in the episode “too expensive”, deciding what you plan to do about it. Episode 550: Using food to cope and what we really need
Dr. Adrienne Youdim is on the show today and has a very interesting story in her journey as a medical weight loss doctor. I’ll let you listen in as she talks about this journey in the first few minutes of the show, but in a nutshell, she wrote a book based on what she’s seen over and over again with her patients and in her own life. Which led her to write a book teaching women to reach a place of self-acceptance, purpose, and meaning. Dr. Adrienne’s mission is to transform our relationship with food, our weight and our bodies to one that is informed and empowered, inspiring people to live more physically and emotionally fulfilling lives. Her book talks about the many, many ways women are hungry and although we only have time to talk about a handful of them, I’m sure you’ll resonate with the ones we do touch on, and if you want to know the rest, you’ll have to grab her book! In this episode you’ll hear: What brought Dr. Adrienne to write a book that isn’t really about weight loss, even though she was a doctor who helped people lose weight. (4:42) Andrea reads an excerpt from Dr. Adrienne’s book that talks about the universal hungers that we all have and feel. (7:05) We talk about how detrimental fat-shaming is, what is Body dysmorphic disorder, as well as what happens when we use food to cope (7:37) I ask since Dr. Adrienne’s book Hungry for More focuses on the many things women are actually hungry for, what have been the chapters that resonate the most with readers? (12:16) What, in terms of mental and emotional health, does she see in her practice? (24:14) We discuss dopamine…is that one of the hungers? (35:06) I ask about ritual, why is having ritual in our life one of our hungers and why is it important? Minisode 549: Grieving Changes
The topic of today’s minisode comes from one of our Make Some Noise listeners! Earlier this year, we sent out a survey, and y’all showed up (THANK YOU!). One listener asked if I could riff on the following topic: Grieving changes, like kids aging, and experiences you thought you'd have by a certain age. I have a feeling you all have struggled with at least one of those she mentioned, so I put together a list of steps to think about if you are. Listen into the minisode to get an in-depth look at these, especially number three! Acknowledging the grief— don’t dismiss it. Feel whatever you feel, don’t make yourself wrong for it. And know those emotions may circle back around over and over again. Work on letting go, in other words, work on detachment. Many times we feel like if we have this or that, it would make us happier, more fulfilled, or more successful. Journal and talk to people who make you feel seen and heard on this topic. Minisode 546: Showing up in relationships
I got a lot of messages after I released episode 540, all kinds– either sending me love and support, saying you relate and have been through what I’m going through, and some of you in a spot where you’re not sure if you should stay or go. And of course we all know how the social media algorithms work, and there’s some videos that have come across my feed in the last month or so that spoke to me and that topic and I wanted to share them with you. For legal reasons, these are hypothetical, and I may or may not be able to relate to these in my own life. I’ve included the links to each video and transcribed below. Episode 544: Huge Pussy Energy with Jacqueline Buckingham
EToday’s episode is about changing definitions, taking up space, and prioritizing women's health. My guest is Jacqueline Buckingham, an actress, activist, and advocate for women's health. She says, “I believe that embracing the word pussy, not just as women, as a culture, is the start of shifting the huge imbalance we have in our world.” Jacqueline is an impassioned voice for body positivity and mental health. Scrolling through Instagram the other day, I came across a reel from my friend and colleague, Christine Gutierrez. I loved it so much I wanted to not only share it with you, as well as record my own thoughts as it pertains to my life and expand on how this could apply to you as well. Minisode 540: The end of my marriage
This was a hard episode to record. As you probably know, I’ve been married to my second husband, Jason, for a long time, since 2008. And after ten months of committed therapy, in January of this year, we decided to end our nearly fifteen-year marriage. Out of respect to him and our children, I won’t disclose the details of the reasons we split, but will speak in vague ways and talk about my part… the things I acknowledge that contributed to the end. Listen in to this minisode as I share what I can, and share a message I have for any of you who are in a place where you’re wondering if you should stay or go in your own relationship. I share as much as I can, and I wish I could share more details with you. North Carolina divorce laws are weird, and at least for now I need to keep some things private. Minisode 533: Things Happy Women Do, Part 1
In 2014, I wrote an article that went viral. When I was brainstorming topics for minisodes I remembered this article and thought I Would just go through these 11 things and be done with it. However, when I read it, I shook my head, thinking how differently I would write this now, how I’ve changed, the challenges I’ve seen myself go through with some of these things, and if nothing else, the immense nuance that comes with each one. In two weeks I’ll release part two, but for now, here’s the start. Please listen to the episode a I go into detail about each one, and include what I wrote in 2014 and how I would change that. Episode 532: Coaching Session with Amy: Goal Planning, Working Through Fear and Getting Unstuck
Exciting news…I’m bringing back coaching episodes to the podcast! In this episode I’m coaching a former client of mine, Amy. Amy is in her late 40’s, climbed the corporate ladder fairly quickly throughout her 20’s, and now finds herself wanting something different…but she’s not sure what. She mentions fear getting in her way of making a decision. I ask her questions that she says, “flip her brain” and you’ll hear me pull sentences from the questionnaire she filled out before our session (you know how I’ve said even applying for 1:1 coaching and answering those questions can give you insights?). After we dig into what excites her regarding this new leap of faith, I ask her, “What’s next?” That’s where the real juice happens! I think you’ll see some of your own life in this conversation with Amy. The circumstances might be different, but perhaps you’ve been in the place she is now. Or, sometime in the future you’ll be in the place where you’re given a fantastic opportunity and you’re scared to do it! You'll hear about halfway through our conversation, Amy says “I'm so glad I got the chance to talk this out because It opens my brain to realize that I get so stuck in my head. And it's really not that big of a deal.” My invitation to YOU is to think about things in your life where you might be doing the same thing– spinning, ruminating, overthinking things that might need to just be coached through. You’ll hear the nitty gritty about her situation, and I left all this in the recording so you can see how granular we can get in a coaching session in order to support the client and the topic. Make sure you stay until the very end where I read an update from Amy! Did she get everything she wanted? Tune in to find out ;) Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Minisode 530: Doing the work
This morning I had a client session where she talked about being in transition in her life setting the intention of this next phase being about her. Not putting everyone else before her, not being utterly selfless, but choosing herself first. So we made plans that honored her values and she was excited. But, before I let her go, I asked her a particular question that was directly related to “The Work”, but so often neglected. You’ll have to listen to this short episode to find out what it is ;) When it comes to personal development, we want to check off the boxes first, feeling better that we did the thing, and fingers crossed it changes our life, right? And many times, we over think things– including our own personal growth– wanting to put things in categories, wanting to make sense of it all, wanting answers to our uncomfortable questions. But often we can’t do that and racing through things or overthinking them keeps us stuck. I’ve certainly been there, and in an effort to work through that, I’ve recorded this minisode for you. EToday’s minisode is about the difference between being attached and unattached to the outcome. Easy, right? This is NEVER easy and always a work in progress. It will probably also ebb and flow throughout your personal development journey. This is still very hard for me, and I mention in this episode that I need this advice just as much as the next person.
