Minisode 625: The importance of taking small action
You’ve probably tuned into countless podcasts, read dozens of books, and done a ton of self-work based on everything you've learned. But, in this rebroadcast, I’m asking you to go a little further. Sometimes we look at the metaview of how we want our life to change and it seems too daunting. Sometimes we look at other people’s lives and wonder how we will ever get to the place where we’re like them (well, the story we make up that is their life). Sometimes we feel like there are so many moving parts to personal development, where one thing leads to another and so on and so forth and where is the end to all this growth? (Hint: there isn’t an end.) So, I compiled a short list of small actions you can do today or this week or sometime soon that will make a difference. As you’ve heard me say over and over again, courage (even in the face of fear) brings confidence– the knowledge that we can do hard things and even if we do the hard thing and fall on our face, we then realize we’ll live through it. In no particular order… Having a hard conversation. Who is the person you need to talk to? What is the thing you are afraid to say? What can you do this week to take a step in that direction? Controlled emoting. You may remember me talking about this in How To Stop Feeling Like Shit about controlled emoting. That thing you’ve been stuffing down? Feel it. Writing a letter you’ll never send. It can be to anyone or anything. It can be angry, sad, full of rage, I hate you, anything and everything you’re feeling about something happening. Write it to your mom, your president, your ex, your fear, the patriarchy, anything that brings up the uncomfortable feelings you’re trying not to feel. Researching starting your own business. Whether you want it to be a complete career change, a hobby, or a side hustle, so many people want to do this and never start. Research is the first step. Go to that poetry reading. Or open mic comedy night. Or political meeting. That place you’ve been thinking about that makes you uncomfortable but is the source of the fire in your belly. Throw out all the stuff from your ex that you’ve been meaning to throw away. Whatever you need to do to cleanse old energy. Maybe it’s just cleaning out your closet or your garage. Out with the old. Start that creative project you’ve been thinking about for forever. Too many times we put off creativity as a luxury, or being unproductive. If you wait until it doesn’t feel like that, you’ll wait forever. Just carve out 30 minutes and do it. Minisode 621: Tolerations, what are you saying yes to that needs to change?
One of the common things clients bring to me for coaching is overwhelm and work/life balance. They feel like they’re doing too much, for too many people, and the resentments are starting to set in, not to mention the exhaustion. We get down to business and the end result is them saying no more often, and setting some boundaries and having hard, but necessary conversations. In this minisode I’ll help you DIY this by taking inventory of unhealthy or unnecessary tolerations, and committing to making changes there, as well as noticing what you say YES to when you take that action. Minisode 615: 10 signs you might have a problem with alcohol
As you might know, I got sober from alcohol in 2011. Every once in a while, I like to pop in with some podcast episodes that might help people who are considering sobriety or even just thinking about their own drinking patterns. I’ve compiled a list of 10 signs you might have a problem with alcohol. Tune into this minisode as I dive a little deeper in each one. You’re hiding booze and/or lying about how much you’re drinking You’re spending a lot of energy covering up how much you drink. You’re fighting a gut feeling about it. You feel guilty, ashamed and/or embarrassed about your drinking. You notice other people’s drinking habits. “Normal drinkers” tend to not notice how much You think about drinking a lot. The thought of living your life without alcohol scares you and you just can’t imagine it. Every day feels like groundhogs day. Get up, feel like shit from drinking too much. Whether it’s a dull hangover or just the guilt or shame from drinking as much as you did. You commit to not drinking that day. That lasts until around dinner time, where you find a reason to have just one drink, and before you know it, you’re back to where you started the day before. And it starts over again the next morning. You very much look forward to occasions where you can drink a lot. Like Superbowl parties, your birthday, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, etc. For me, any day that it was socially acceptable to start drinking around lunchtime and get drunk by dinner time was dreamy. You get irritated and/or angry if there’s a social event without alcohol. Like a dry wedding, what? Or a restaurant with no liquor license. Or a kids birthday party that just has water and soda. The bottom line of it is that our lives begin to revolve around alcohol and the feelings around it. If we’re not thinking about drinking, we’re feeling guilty or ashamed about it. We’re wondering if we drink too much. Wondering if our loved ones are noticing. Swearing we’ll only drink beer and wine from now on. Committing to drinking more water in between drinks. Saving calories or points to be able to drink more. The thought of sobriety and recovery seems weird and uncomfortable-- not to mention the shame of identifying as an “alcoholic”. Minisode 609: On how I manifested the home I moved into
This episode is a continuation of minisode 606 from a few weeks ago, where I talked about doing the bare minimum when you’re feeling overwhelmed with life circumstances. Since then, I’ve moved in and am slowly settling into a new place after leaving my marital home. Over the last several months I’ve been journaling– part of that is writing down the same five things every day that I’ve been focusing on as my goals. One of those goals was finding a house as I embark on this new chapter of my life. Tune in as I tell you how I did it. This minisode also has a mantra/affirmation that I heard on social media a few weeks ago and have been saying over and over to myself. It’s an easy one for you to use too! I hope you love these minisodes as much as I love making them for you, and if you’d like private support from me, don’t hesitate to check out 1:1 coaching! Minisode 606: On prioritizing when life gets "too much"
I’ve often talked to you about doing the bare minimum or “bare mins” when life gets a little or a lot overwhelming. As I move into my new place after separating, I’m in that place. I’ve recorded a minisode for you today on how to navigate when life is upside down, you have too many big things happening, and you’re feeling overwhelmed. Episode 605: Coaching Sydney on Reframing Emotions and Come Home to Self
This week I have a coaching session episode for you! Sydney, a life coach, joins me as we explore her feelings of being stuck about what she wants in the bigger picture of her life and how she is motivated to build towards something meaningful but isn't quite sure what that looks like yet. One key theme we uncover is the concept of coming home to yourself. At one point during our session, I suggested a possible reframe: “Coming home to yourself, it’s about those pivotal moments where we fully accept every part of who we are—peace, trust, stability, anger, rage—recognizing that every facet is breathtakingly beautiful.” We also explore understanding that, maybe, we can be our own anchor in the storms of life. You’ll hear us talk about: Craving clarity and the desire for connection, seeking an anchor in life. (8:17) Processing emotions: What if being oversensitive isn't a flaw but a human experience? (24:33) Reframing how we look at our emotions, especially Sydney's journey with anger and the inner work involved in understanding and working through it. Minisode 602: On how to let go of limiting beliefs
A friend and I recently were having a back and forth about love and relationships and our quest to learn and grow from them. I said to him, “All the men I’ve loved and cared about in my life have disappointed me and left me in some way or another. Family members included. Every one.” My friend pushed back and said, “You may not like what I’m about to say, but I think that’s a limiting belief.” Ugh. And recently, I stumbled upon a listener question…Colleen M. asks, “How do we actually get rid of limiting beliefs? I know you have covered this before but dig deeper to not just recognize them but banishing them.” In this short minisode, you’ll hear my reaction to my friend's opinion of my own limiting belief and my answer to Colleen’s question. Minisode 599: On the grief of breaking up
It’s been a long time since I got divorced the first time in 2006. It was also a much different situation and we didn’t have kids. Kids throw a whole different level of complication and sadness to it. In this minisode, I talk about the process of getting separated and then divorced, and the things that are taking me OUT while doing so. Things like packing up…looking at my bathroom drawers empty. Finding old pictures and cards while packing up of the years passed. And more. I end the episode talking about how multiple feelings and experiences can be true…you can feel grief and sadness for what’s ending to the nth degree, and also hope, excitement and optimism for what’s to come. That, we’re at choice about. Resources from this episode: Write Your Way Through It is open for registration Book recommendations: I love a good personal development book, and you do too, right? Minisode 596: My journey with Ketamine Therapy
You’ve probably heard me mention here and there on various podcast episodes about psychedelic therapy. I’ve had a few experts who talk about its benefits (episodes 551 with Dr. Ellen Vora and 560 with Dr. Tanmeet Sethi). It’s been an incredibly interesting topic to me, but as someone in long-term recovery, I assumed it wasn’t for me. However, after doing extensive research and finding out that a) There is a community of people in recovery who support each other in their journey towards using psychedelics for addiction and recovery, b) the research shows psychedelics are not addictive, and 3) psychedelics when used properly have been shown to help people who struggle with anxiety, addiction, depression, ADHD and other mental health challenges, I decided to take the plunge. If you’d like to follow along in my journey, I’m making a private podcast feed to chronicle it all. I’ll go more in depth as to why I’ve chosen to do this, talk about the different options, tell you how my experience was with each one, and how it’s helped me in terms of my mental health. If you decide to sign up, please keep in mind, this is just my experience, psychedelics are not for everyone, and this type of therapy is subjective. That being said, tune into this week’s minisode where I talk about the above, why this is an extra-personal endeavor for me, which psychedelic therapy I chose to start with and why. Minisode 593: 3 questions to ask to integrate "the work"
If you’ve listened to the podcast for any length of time, you know I’m a fan of journaling. My relationship with journaling has ebbed and flowed over the years, but one thing always remains the same: When I do it, it’s always helpful to me. I’ve compiled a list of questions for you to journal on, no matter where you are in your life. Brett Larkin joins me for a conversation about yoga. If you’ve followed me for some time then you know all about my push-pull relationship with yoga. Minisode 589: What it looks like to navigate a break-up, Part 2
As you probably have heard by now, I’m going through a major life change (if you missed that minisode in July, check out episode 540 HERE.) A few weeks ago I released a minisode (episode 586 HERE) about how I’m getting through it, and today’s episode is part two where I’m taking you with me around more of the how. In this minisode, I’m revealing what I’m doing to get myself to where I want to go. I’m hoping it can be helpful for you to see what the work looks like in real time. First up, is getting really clear on what I want. I’ve broken my life into parts, and every day I do some journaling focusing on those parts: My kids My home My income My health My love life As well as what I’m grateful for. I also talk about how in this part of my life, for the first time, I’m betting on myself. I’m leaning into all parts of myself, which includes all of my emotions. I’m feeling my feelings full out. The joy, the sadness, the anger and sometimes rage, the hope, the fear too. I’m learning to really, truly trust myself. For once. And lastly, I’m looking for ways to do my own somatic work (besides dancing, which I’ve been leaning on for a while now) that will help get me into my body– I’m toying around with the idea of starting erotic dance, or a physical challenge like straddle to handstand. Check out the short minisode to hear more about it! Minisode 586: On what's next
“Maybe you can’t see it yet, but you can feel it. You can sense it. Somewhere deep within, you know—something is happening that you can’t quite see. Energy that is working in your favor. Tiny synchronicities aligning in perfect timing. A shift happening in the universe that you can feel deep down in your bones. 🤯 And your thinking mind may still have doubts, but your beating heart knows—this is real. What’s meant for you is coming. You are seen, and you are being taken care of in ways you can’t even imagine. You’re exactly where you’re supposed to be. And right now, your only job is to keep making space. 🦋 Keep letting go of what no longer serves you–the limiting beliefs, the old stories, the heavy baggage you’ve been carrying that isn’t meant to come with you into this next chapter. Make space for what’s meant for you. Make space for what’s coming. 🌌 Soon, you’ll understand how everything that has happened has led you to this moment. Soon, you’ll see. This whole universe is about to open up for you.” — Zanna Keithley *********************** If you tune in to this week's episode you’ll hear me tell you why this post resonated so much with me. I summarize what the last three years have been like for me, while giving a small update on the ending of my marriage. I also share that my business experienced the biggest hit and setback in its lifetime starting in 2020 and I’m just now trying to climb my way out. I was too sick and too emotionally distracted to put my mind and heart into it. I’m ready now. It’s a short episode (under 20 min) and the next minisode will be part two, where I talk about how I’m putting Zanna’s message above to work in my life, and how I’m intentionally moving into the next new phase of my life. First up, I get into what taking up space really looks like, and how it shows up in our lives. Then is why we don’t take up space and what it’s costing us. Like, why does it matter? Minisode 577: How to overcome insecurities to achieve BIG goals
Today’s minisode comes from another listener request! She wanted to know more about how to overcome insecurities to achieve BIG goals. Below you’ll find some of the exercises and questions I talk about in this minisode, but make sure you listen in to get the whole enchilada. Big goals are a long game, so let’s first talk logistics. First, break down what you want to do into smaller chunks, and then from there, even smaller. Sometimes it can help to look at the reality of what you’re trying to accomplish, and then remind yourself that you’re one human, and it’s going to take time, perseverance, and grace. Next, I’m going to give you some questions and exercises to do that will help you break them down so you can work through them and hopefully overcome them. Let’s start with why is this goal important to you? Does it honor your values? How do you anticipate it’ll make you feel when you reach it? Is this goal solely important to you, or is it important to you that you reach this goal so others will perceive you a certain way (this isn’t always bad!) If this goal is successful, are you afraid something will happen then? For example, sustainability, what people will think, outgrowing certain people. Thinking about the specific insecurities you have around this, when was the first time you remember feeling those insecurities? Can you narrow down when it became an insecurity? It’s okay if you can’t, instead, think about other areas in your life you feel that specific kind of insecurity. What if the goal doesn’t work out as you want it to, think that through. How will you recover? What do you need to say no to in order to keep taking action? And when you do that, what are you saying yes to? Also, know that you’ll likely have insecurities forever. You’ll get past some and get new ones. Or some you’ll overcome and they’ll come back later when you make bigger or different goals. It’s normal, especially in our culture that constantly makes us feel we’re not enough.
