On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) is here with Nich Fairbanks(@Prudentia0) to discuss the Panthers 5-1 loss to the Ottawa Senators, where the Panthers were even more shorthanded. It was announced during the morning skate that D Seth Jones broke his foot during the teams loss in Montreal, which resulted in the Panthers calling up D Marek Alscher and D Ludvig Jansson, both drafted in the 2022 class. Florida settled things down after going down two, but where they could only contain the Sens for so long when they could not solve Linus Ullmark before the end of the second period. Ottawa got a big insurance goal early in the third period in what felt like the dagger in the hockey game. Jesper Boqvist got the only goal on the night to cut it to a two-goal deficit, but a turnover when having the extra attacker on resulted in Ottawa scoring on the empty net and giving the Panthers no chance. The team showed heart despite it being now 12 guys out of the lineup, but Ottawa was too much to handle for the depleted group. The guys give their three duds of the game, when they knew the game was lost, and preview the Panthers-Leafs game on Hockey Night in Canada, which the stakes are a bit different as the two teams are battling for draft position as oppose to playoff position. Ep 1314SAME STORY: Late goal by MTL forced OT, Habs prevailed to make it eight straight over Florida
On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) is here with Jacob Winans(@JakeW_8) to break down the Panthers' 4-3 shootout loss to the Montreal Canadiens, as they are swept for the second year in a row, and now have lost eight straight against the Habs. Florida despite missing Matthew Tkachuk due to the birth of his child, held their own and controlled most of the game, keeping Montreals superstars at bay until the final moments of the game. Panthers got multiple goals in transition thanks to Carter Verhaeghe and Cole Reinhardt, and were limiting the opportunities when the game was at even strength. All of Montreals goals scored were either on the power play, a delayed call that brought the extra attacker, and then in crunch time with the goaltender pulled, so goes to show how great their game was at even strangth. However, the Panthers inability to pull away kept the Habs within distance as they had a response when the Panthers took the lead. Nick Suzuki did it again to the Panthers, where it's the third time in the last four matchups where he tied the game to force overtime when it looked like the Panthers were going to steal a game. Montreal had a chance to end it in overtime after Tomas Nosek took a late penalty in regulation and the Habs had total control on the power play, but the PK stood strong, and even created some two-on-one chances after the kill. Quick work was done in the shootout as the Habs scored on both their attempts and the Panthers did score at all, which gave Montreal the victory. Panthers lost Dmitry Kulikov midway through the third period, and could've been a big piece for them to use in crunch time when the Panthers could not clear the puck and Paul Maurice said after that he broke his finger and is out for the rest of the season. It's the third broken finger on the roster in less than two weeks, so the injuries just continue to pile on. The guys give their three duds of the game, when they knew the game was lost, and discuss the state of the draft lottery, where it now looks like 6th will be their ceiling (or floor, however one sees it) with just over a week left of hockey. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) is here to discuss Paul Maurice's comments after Sunday's game in Pittsburgh, discussing how F Cole Schwindt is going to get more ice time as the team has five games left in the season. It's been a frustrating season for Schwindt as he's had two major injuries this year. However, he's been able to come back twice, and with his goal production going up and playing in key moments on the penalty kill, he could be a player in which the Panthers front office looks at to bring back to the mix next season, so it's a big tryout period for him. Two Panthers front office members are gaining steam for opportunities for GM openings, Brett Peterson and Sunny Mehta. Peterson has gone through an in person interview with the Nashville Predators and is in deep consideration, but the Preds may have a guys in mind in original Panther Tom Fitzgerald, who got let go from the New Jersey Devils on Monday. FItzgerald was the first captain in Predators history. Sunny Mehta does have a history working with the Devils and had various experiences in not just hockey, which is of a similar trait to another GM who recently got a job in an NHL from office. Panthers visit Montreal for the third game of their three-game season series, where the losing streak is at seven. Panthers are looking to end it, while the Habs still have a chance to win the division title with Buffalo defeated Tampa Bay on Monday night. Ep 1312ELIMINATED: Panthers got swept out of Pittsburgh, as it's a full-circle moment for both teams
On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brought in Hunter Hodies(@HunterHodies) is here to discuss the Pittsburgh Penguins side of things as they swept the Panthers in the season series for the first time since 2016-17. Pittsburgh got off to a great start in the first game of two where Noel Acciari scored 20 seconds in. Panthers did eventually tie it at two at the end of the first, but the Panthers failure to break out of their zone had Pittsburgh scoring 4 goals on 11 shots, where the Cats did not register a single shot on goal in that span, left Sergei Bobrovsky out to dry. Daniil Tarasov came into the game and gave up three more of his own, but Florida did not do themselves any favors, not even getting a single power play on Saturday. Tarasov would get the start again, and Arturs Silovs would start again for Pittsburgh after Stuart Skinner was hit near the eye while sitting on the bench on Saturday, and the Panthers put up a better fight. Dmitry Kulikov returned to the lineup, but the Panthers shot themselves in the foot by getting frustrated after a shoulder to the head of Mackie Samoskevich that went uncalled resulted in Pittsburgh scoring on an odd-man rush, and another demollition was on deck. Matthew Tkachuk let his frustrations known, and resulted in a penalty which the Pens cashed in on. Florida could not close the gap from there, but did have a better second period, getting to the net front, but could not solve Silovs, and one bad pinch resulted in another goal off the rush for Pittsburgh. Sidney Crosby got to multiple milestones passing Steve Yzerman for seventh all time in points, and on Sunday, clinched his 21st point-per-game season in his Hall Of Fame Career. The two discuss how the team has looked since the Olympic break, if the big three of Pittsburgh will have a statue all together or separate, and a full circle moment as the Penguins eliminated the Cats from playoff contention almost three years to the day where a Pittsburgh loss to the Chicago Blackhawks got the Panthers into the postseason in 2023, which started their incredible three year run. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) is here with Nich Fairbanks(@Prudentia0) for another edition of Fairbanks Friday, as the two broke down the Panthers 2-1 win over the Bruins, sweeping the season series for the first time since 2006-07. Florida was once again ready from the jump as Boston was unable to control their zone entries, which allowed the Panthers to counter, dump the puck and get in on their forecheck. Panthers scored twice in the first 10 minutes where Mackie Samoskevich is now on a three-game goal streak, scoring while Boston was fighting off the forecheck. Sam Bennett later scored after a blocked shot landed near him with no Bruins players around in the slot and beat Swayman blocker side. Sergei Bobrovsky was not a busy goalie in the first 40 minutes, but faced 15 of his 29 shots in the third period, and even stopped a late Boston Power play with just over three minutes left to slam the door shut. It's win number 456 of Bobrovsky's career as he continues to rack up the wins. It was a depleted blue line again for the Panthers, but the guys stepping up in their roles played a tight defensive game and kept the middle clean. The guys give their three stars of the game, when they knew the game was won, and preview the weekend back-to-back where they'll see the same exact team in the Pittsburgh Penguins on both Saturday and Sunday. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) is here with Jacob Winans(@JakeW_8) for another edition of Winans Wednesday, as the two broke down the Panthers 6-3 win over the Ottawa Senators, where the Panthers were right from the start, where they set a franchise record where F Noah Gregor scored eight seconds in to set a franchise record for the fastest goal to begin a hockey game, breaking it by two seconds. The Panthers continued to press on as they scored just over a minute later on the power play, and then had their third by the 10-minute mark. Florida kept pushing despite chasing G Linus Ullmark and having a five-goal lead in the second period with multiple chances off the rush. The Senators injuries to their defense are well documented, and the Panthers had them in their own end for more than half of the first period as the Cats had 10-minutes of offensive zone time and held two-thirds of the shot share as they continued to get in on their forecheck and winning battles along the walls in all three zones. Panthers penalty kill was also on point as they allowed two shots on their first three minor penalties, and really stood out after being down as much as 6-on-3 after Noah Gregor was called for a five-minute major for an illegal check to the head, Gustav Forsling was in the penalty box, and two of the Panthers defenseman in Aaron Ekblad and Dmitry Kulikov got banged up during the third period while the Senators put on the extra attacker. Despite all that, the Panthers kept Daniil Tarasov clean on special teams and created enough of a cushion to give him a comfortable win. It was a great night for the culture as the team got a win and did not move a spot in the lottery odds after Tuesday's slate of games, the ultimate win-win. Ep 1307ANOTHA ONE: It happened again, a goal against in the final minute as the Panthers couldn't force OT
On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) is here with Nich Fairbanks(@Prudentia0) to break down the Panthers' 3-2 loss to the Minnesota Wild, where Minnesota won in the final 10 seconds just a minute after the D Aaron Ekblad tied it with the extra attacker on over a minute before. Panthers were pinned in their own end for the entirety of the game, and gave up 19 shots in the first, and Daniil Tarasov was keeping the Panthers in it. The goals were starting to come together for the Wild in the beginning of the period and toward the end, but the Panthers were able to get back in it after Matthew Tkachuk scored his 10th of the season in his 24th game after redirecting Forslings point shot. He later got the secondary assist on Ekblad's goal for a two point night. It's now the third time Florida lost in the final minute and failing to get the game to overtime, as they are still the team with the least amount of game that have gone to OT. Jesper Wallstedt outdueled Tarasov as he saw a good amount of quality chances against despite not a lot of quantity. Panthers were able to contain Kirill Kaprizov on the evening, and Tarasov's vision and lack of second chance opportunities kept it from being an even bigger deficit, but the Wild ended up getting a deserved win either way. Panthers lost Evan Rodrigues in the first shift of the game, and Paul Maurice after the game said that he broke his finger in the loss. TBD on if surgery will be required for Rodrigues. The guys give their three duds of the game, when they knew the game was lost, and preview the weekend in NY, and a big celebration of the game happening overseas as the Panthers will be at the center of the Fourth Annual Hockey Day in Finland on March 27th and 28th, with the game on Long Island taking place in primetime on Saturday, matinee on the east coast. Ep 1305SURVIVED A SCARE: Panthers ended up victorious in a shootout after blowing a three goal lead
On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) is here to break down the Panthers' 5-4 shootout win over the Kraken where a 4-1 lead was blown, but still found themselves victorious. It turned from a low event game to a high in the third, where the first period had nine total shots, and the game ended with nine goals. Seven of the nine goals were scored in an 11:22 span in the third period. The Panthers were well structured in the first 40 minutes where they were able to roll the four lines, Sergei Bobrovsky rebound control was excellent, and the fourth line with F Noah Gregor getting called up from Charlotte created multiple opportunities with his speed, setting up a goal to Nolan Foote and an attempt to Foote where it bounced off a Kraken player and into the net. The mistakes for Florida would caused the Kraken to come back, and two of the goals coming 14 seconds apart where they fumbled the puck at the blue line, and Seattle converted on two breakaways by Jordan Eberle and Bobby McMann. Florida controlled the OT period, but couldn't get the winner in the extra frame, so a shootout was necessary, as Bobrovsky was a brick wall, not giving up a single goal and Vinnie Hinostroza scoring with a beauty of a backhand shot on Joey Daccord after getting an assist earlier in the game off of a partial change. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) is here to discuss the Panthers dropping the final game of their road trip in Calgary by a final of 4-1, where it's not seven straight games that the Panthers have lost at the Saddledome (last win: 2/17/18). Florida was within one goal despite not playing their best game, but it all took a major turn when AJ Greer was called for two penalties on Connor Zary, a minor for hooking and then a five-minute major for boarding. Zary was able to get up. Greer's recklessness resulted in a major and game misconduct, and on Sunday evening, the Department of Player Safety has suspended Greer for three game starting Tuesday against Seattle. On that same seven minute penalty kill, defenseman Niko Mikkola and Ryan Strome collided knee-on-knee after the Panthers came up short handed. No ill intent from Strome as the two came together, but Niko Mikkola immediately reached for his left knee and was unable to put any weight on it when coming off the ice. It's already been a season full of man games lost as the Panthers are tied right at the top of the league, and it's effected their game results all season long. With 13 games to go, the Panthers have to weigh in their risks on who to dress the rest of the way as some of the injuries have the possibility to carry over to the next season. Panthers were also opportunistic and decisive with the puck when the Oilers blue line was constantly making one mistake after another. It was a ReinharDt who got on the board, except it was by the name of Cole, not Sam who got in on the scoring off of a breakaway, and with the predictability of trying to stretch a pass to Connor McDavid in space, Florida intercepted the pass, got the puck deep, worked it back up top before Mike Benning's shot from the point found AJ Greer near the crease to extend the lead, and the route was one from there. Anton Lundell later scored on the power play to tie his career high in goals with 18, and Sam Bennett set a new career high in points with 52, getting the primary assist on the goal. Carter Verhaeghe got his 20th goal of the season, where he has scored 20 goals in 5 of his 6 seasons in a Panthers sweater (scored 18 in the 56-game shortened season). On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brought in Jacob Winans(@JakeW_8) to the show to break down the Panthers 5-2 loss to the Vancouver Canucks. The Panthers brought back D Seth Jones to the lineup for the first time in over two months, and F Nolan Foote made his Panthers debut against his dad, Canucks Head Coach, Adam Foote. Panthers once again allowed the first goal of the game to Vancouver, and it was giving up to a player who had been on a 20-game goal drought in Elias Pettersson, where he also got a second one (both on the PP). Florida ended up cutting it two one, and that's where the defensive miscues happened on their inability to clear, and it happened when the Cats had a one goal deficit and Vancouver was able to bring it back to two. Florida kept chasing their tail, but left Sergei Bobrovsky to dry in his 800th game. Bobrovsky now has the record for the most games played by a Russian goaltender. Sam Bennett has tied a career high in points after his goal on the night as he has been a big contributor with multiple players out, but it was not enough for the Panthers to get a win on the night. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) is here to break down the Panthers 6-2 loss to the Seattle Kraken to begin their four-game road trip. Florida already without Sam Reinhart for the entire trip, gave Sam Bennett the evening off, which means they were without their three top scorers on the season on Sunday night. Florida had the ice tilted in their favor, but failed to get the puck past Joey Daccord. Once the Kraken made it 1-0, then it opened up more of the grade-A opportunities as it was the theme all night. Seattle's scoring-by-committee approach worked as their bottom six got in on the scoring on multiple occasions and it was open season near the crease as Daniil Tarasov was let down. Florida was able to cut it to a one-goal deficit in the first, but that's the closest they got, as the Kraken got a two-goal lead heading into the second, and continued the scoring the rest of the game. Florida had a chance to cut the deficit when they were 5on-3 for 57 seconds, but could not convert as Seattle's penalty kill is towards the bottom of the league. Florida now shifts their focus to the Canucks on Tuesday night, as both teams look entirely different from their first matchup on November 17th. Blue Jackets are on the playoff bubble and were playing for the point in regulation, but after a breakaway from Matthew Tkachuk, it drew a tripping call which eventually led to the winner by Sam Reinhart. Reinhart was back in the lineup after missing Tueaday's win against Detroit, as the Panthers were without Anton Lundell and Carter Verhaeghe. There was a Panthers Debut in Cole Reinhardt and an NHL Debut, where D Mike Benning got the secondary assist in overtime. Trusted to take a roll on the power play after his experience in the NCAA and in Charlotte, Florida threw Benning into the wolves and got involved on the game winner. Matthew Tkachuk with his first hat trick in over two seasons, and the Panthers were able to get a quick lead in the third and shut it down from there. Ep 1294NEW LOW: Panthers comeback fell short, as guys were ruled out for roster management purposes
On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) is here with Nich Fairbanks(@Prudentia0) for another edition of Fairbanks Friday. The two broke down the Panthers 4-2 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets, where the lineup was already thin due to roster management purposes with Jeff Petry getting traded earlier in the day to Minnesota, AJ Greer being a scratch, and Daniil Tarasov getting the start in Columbus when in normal circumstances, it would be Bobrovsky. Panthers had better jump on Thursday, but it was a bunch of difficulty getting to the middle of the ice as the Blue Jackets did a great job getting into the lanes defensively. Columbus converted with deflected and getting to the net front while they forced the Panthers to turn the puck over in their zone. Florida make a push after being down 3-0 with goals from Niko Mikkola and Sam Bennett on the power play, and for a split second, looked to have tied it at three. However, Jesper Boqvist was called for goaltender interference as he was in the crease, but Ivan Proverov did not allow Boqvist an opportunity to leave, so Florida could not complete the comeback as Columbus added an empty netter at the end. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) and Jacob Winans(@JakeW_8) broke down the Panthers 5-1 loss to the New Jersey Devils. The Panthers had an opportunity to take control of the game in the second period after New Jersey lost their composure in the first period, but a sloppy play that ended up in a short handed breakaway opportunity where the Cats negated their own power play by committing a penalty of their own. New Jersey would score a four-on-four goal after that and the Panthers could not gain any momentum after that, trying line changes to the forwards and even switching up the bottom two defensive pairs. Paul Maurice let his frustration known during the first period during an interview where both teams were careless with the puck, but New Jersey was the team who was able to clean it up while Florida failed to do so, as the first saw a lot of two-on-one opportunities where Sergei Bobrovsky was not the issue for the Panthers. Being down by two in the third, it was the Devils who still controlled play as they were connecting out of their own end and the Panthers were unable to get their forecheck and cycle game going. Florida took full control of the first period where it looked similar to game seven vs. Toronto back in 2025, where the puck was consistently in the Leafs end, and Florida was able to pounce with three goals, them coming in all situations. Even Rodrigues led the way with nine shots in the game, and seven of them coming in the first period. Toronto then had the territorial advantage after the first period, and that's when Sergei Bobrovsky got to work, where he was able to track pucks well from all over the ice. Florida's defense gave very few high danger opportunities, and Bobrovsky was able to clean them up with the lack of rebound chances for Toronto. It's one win out of the Olympic break, and the Panthers have no room for error and getting healthier, can they keep this up as they are right back at it on Friday?
