Locked On MLB Prospects - Daily Podcast on Minor League Baseball

On today's show, we're looking at the late-season call-ups & prospect debuts as teams are fighting for playoff positioning. Some teams promoted a top prospect (SS Gunnar Henderson of the Baltimore Orioles, 1B Triston Casas of the Boston Red Sox, 2B Vaughn Grissom of the Atlanta Braves, C Yanier Diaz of the Houston Astros) while other contenders promoted lesser-heralded prospects (OF Garrett Mitchell of the Milwaukee Brewers, 3B Brett Baty of the New York Mets). Non-contenders called up some good players, too: OF Corbin Carroll for the Arizona Diamondbacks, INF Spencer Steer of the Cincinnati Reds, C Shea Langeliers of the Oakland Athletics, and 1B Michael Toglia of the Colorado Rockies.We saw some pitchers come up, although not nearly as many: SP DL Hall for the Baltimore Orioles (although he's headed to the bullpen), SP Brayan Bello of the Boston Red Sox, and SP Hunter Brown of the Houston Astros. Non-contenders got in the action, as well: SP Cade Cavalli of the Washington Nationals and Max Meyer of the Miami Marlins both debuted, but they're both hurt and are not available. On today's Tuesday Top Ten, we're digging through all of Minor League Baseball to determine who are the top ten catching prospects.Tier One is Gabriel Moreno of the Toronto Blue Jays, Francisco Alvarez of the New York Mets, and Diego Cartaya of the Los Angeles Dodgers. On today's show, we're taking a deep dive into the San Diego Padres minor league system and panning for gold. Lots of newly drafted players - RHP Dylan Lesko, LHP Robby Snelling, RHP Adam Mazur, and RHP Henry Williams - are all in the top 25 even though most of them aren't playing professional ball yet. In Single-A Lake Elsinore (the Storm!), top prospect SS Jackson Merrill is having himself a YEAR. OF Samuel Zavala is above-average at everything, so his floor should be pretty high. Pitcher Victor Lizzarraga has a ton of tools (and has held his own as a teenager in professional baseball) but is still pretty raw. In High-A Fort Wayne, TinCaps starter Jackson Wolf is a funky lefty that is really deceptive but has...whelming stuff? In Double-A San Antonio, the Missions are led by lefty Noel Vela, with offense coming from OFs Joshua Mears and Tirso Ornelas and Kevin Kopps doing the closing. Kansas City Royals SS Bobby Witt has lit up the basepath and scoreboard when he came up on Opening Day, but his glove is lagging a bit behind. Centerfielder Michael Harris of the Atlanta Braves is the latest Brave to sign a long-term extension, ensuring his premium defense and precocious bat are in Atlanta for at least eight more years. SS Jeremy Pena has helped the Houston Astros cover for the loss of Carlos Correa in free agency, even if his bat has cooled off recently. 2B Nolan Gorman has provided some extra pop for the St. Louis Cardinals, even if they have to hide him defensively. Starting pitcher George Kirby of the Seattle Mariners has partnered with Rodriguez to keep the Mariners in Wild Card contention, hoping to break one of the longest playoff droughts in the majors. The Single-A Jupiter Hammerheads have recent draftee Jacob Berry, who might play 3B, or 1B, or maybe LF? ...And more importantly, what can we learn from it? We're looking at the updated organizational talent rankings from both MLB Pipeline and Baseball America to determine true talent level of minor league teams. In some cases the variance between the two sites can be distilled down to the value of a single player - OF Jasson Dominguez of the New York Yankees, 1B Xavier Isaac for the Tampa Bay Rays - for example, and sometimes it's a larger conversation about pitching depth (St. Louis Cardinals), possible outfield alignments (Milwaukee Brewers), or maybe just bad timing (the Kansas City Royals graduated most of their top prospects before these lists came out). In two cases, the minor league cupboard is empty, but because the team used it to get to the World Series (Houston Astros) and hoist the trophy as champions (Atlanta Braves). On today's "Farm Friday" show, we're talking Minnesota Twins. It's a system that has a LOT of two distinct types of hitters: Pure contact guys with little power, and Three True Outcomes sluggers who strike out a lot. In A ball, OF Emmanuel Rodriguez (#3) looks like he might be the guy that can do both, while SS Noah Miller is a smooth defender that is looking to build his power. So is 1B Aaron Sabato, in High-A Cedar Rapids. In AA Wichita, Austin Martin and Edouard Julien are both pure hitters with varying levels of power - Julien more than Martin - with defensive questions, while there's a few pitchers here that could end up being dudes with some refinement - Simeon Woods Richardson, Matt Canterino, and local kid Louis Varland. In AAA St. Paul, INF Spencer Steer has made his presence known by adding power to his contact hitter profile, and with his defensive versatility across the infield, is definitely going to get a shot soon.
