S4 Ep 450Episode 450 - Which Witch is Which?

Today we will talk about the witchiness of homesteading and why what seems so strange to some is simply living. Meat canning webinar Tales from the Prepper Pantry Freeze dried beets Freeze dried feta Canning beans is the next round of food preservation Chickens for sale Operation Independence Going dark Main topic of the Show: Which Witch is Which Imagine hundreds of years ago if one of your family members was truly ill and some lady who kept to herself mostly gave you some tea for the sick person -- and they got better. Or if you sprained your ankle and the swelling went down quickly. Add to that layers of superstition like which phase of the moon is best for planting, ceremonies involving burnt hair that reveal your true love's face, and that sort of thing. The final twist could be that the lone lady with that tea lives to be quite old and there we have it. A witch. Yesterday, a friend stopped by who I had not seen in a long time and he joked on the way in the door that I reminded him of country women he remembers as a kid growing up who seemed kind of like witches. He did not mean it in a bad way -- he was just pointing out that I live an alternative lifestyle to the norm. And it is true: If there is a natural or herbal remedy to something, I will try it first. If I have a bad headache, I go to bed. I have some odd world views: Natural cycles of the earth and solar system impact climate, weather and, ultimately growing cycles We evolved here, therefore remedies to our ills evolved with us Just because it cannot be proven scientifically does not prove it false Humans are energy and as such, ignoring energy as part of whole health is a mistake Some of these views make me witchy I suppose. In college, I used to make this brew of ginger root, bitter root, peppermint and hot peppers and honey every time I got a cold. Why? Because it helped. The bitter root soothed my throat, the ginger opened the capillaries in my sinuses, capsasis is an immune system boost, and the peppermint and honey make it drinkable -- not taste good -- drinkable. When I did this I just knew it helped, not the why. But over the years I have learned more about the why, down to peppermint helping with breathing and honey being an antibacterial agent. And even back then, people thought me crazy. They wondered why I did not simply pop a decongestant and go on with life? Moving to the homestead has brought my witchiness to a whole new level. I mean, here I am, living in what looks like isolation, growing a ton of herbs, wildcrafting other herbs, with a good collection of sharp knives around, hair down to my rear end, talking to animals and trees, and not a worry about current events. Well maybe that is not entirely true - I sometimes worry about current events. But life on the homestead is not exactly the picture they paint when they talk about the American Dream is it? It may be my American Dream, but it is a bit of a witchy one. After my friend pointed this out, I realized that he was right. I live a rather witchy life. If you look around right now, as in this week, at my homestead, here are some of the witchy things that happened: Drying herbs (Garlic, bundles of sage, etc) Varied nutritional regimes for the neighbors (Bone broth and ferments to cultivate gut health, fruit to reset the metabolism, goats milk to ease my dogs health issues) Mortar and pestle sitting out with a strange concoction (for bee stings as a matter of fact) Wild plants as tall as I growing near the house: goldenrod, echinacea, garlic, plantain, comfrey, bee balm, lemon balm, day lilies, roses, mint, parsley, and unfortunately perilla and burdock Everything is from scratch: We grind wheat when we need it, make stocks and broth by hand, age cheese, can pickled and other pickled treats, make mayonnaise, gravy by hand, cure bacon and other meats, hang biltong and get our winter veggies from jars (resulting in commercial food tasting bad) Mindset=build your own reality Smell of roses and the scent of things in general Smudging does happen when energy is off, as does meditation, seeking to tap into the spirit of the land around us, and connecting with the earth to heal. Yep, as I think about it, look at the browns of jars of dried herbs here for healing, get ready to age our first cheddar of this season, and watch people come through here with shared values, learning to take control of their personal outcomes no matter what happens --- I can see that homesteading looks pretty witchy to the outside world. But to me, it is something different. This lifestyle is not something to be feared or looked askance at - but rather an acknowledgement that nature is at the core of us all. And when we work with nature, we get better outcomes. Now sure, you may not be a person willing to get dirty and buggy on a homestead to tap into natural cycles. You may prefer your city condo - perhaps with a few pots of herbs. And that is fine. You do you as they like to say. And I don't even mind wh

S4 Ep 447Episode 447 - Homesteading in a Hard Year

Today we talk about what it is like to live the homestead life in a year filled with personal challenges and problems. This is a follow up on "what homesteading is really like." Canning Meat, July 24: https://www.livingfreeintennessee.com/2021/06/28/meat-canning-webinar-july-24-at-2pm Tales from the Prepper Pantry Freeze drying beets for future salads Spiralized zucchini Odds and ends month for the freezer Grocery Store Free Month Operation Independence Sad to report no Independence Day Pigs but she is very very close HR Affiliate Program Main topic of the Show: Homesteading in a Hard Year We had an open house and it was an eye-opening experience. My homestead once provided about 80% of my vegetable needs and 100% of my egg and chicken needs. I ate things in season as they became ripe. I preserved, dried and canned. My garden succession planting program was on point. Then troubles crept in. Ones of the financial type, the relationship type, and the health vibrancy type. Reality on a homestead is a far cry from the ambitious plans we have each spring when planting time comes. Even in the best of years, things will fail and the best approach seems to be fanatical variety. You always ask me what living on a homestead is like and I have to admit - it has been pretty rough these past few years at the Holler Homestead. The saving grace has been my wall of tomatoes and aquaponics system. For background: Transition has been in process here for several years. Transition from two people to one, transition from mostly off-site consulting work to building a coffee business, transition into the Holler Neighbor community. And there have been some family and personal health reminders. All these things take time and a homestead is a full time job. Many people manage the homestead demand with one person working and one person doing the homestead chores until enough business is generated from the land to enable the working partner to quit. Sometimes that never happens. The benefit of having a consulting lifestyle with the homestead was that I would be gone for a whole week working my butt off, then home for 2 to 3 weeks with a light enough schedule that I could catch up on things. But transitions are part of life, are they not? Here are a few looks at the real homestead: Dirt, mud, dust and hair (Shoes off story) Growing food in the ground takes time. Lots of time. Preserving food takes time, lots of time. Raising animals for meat takes less time. The pretty homestead with well-maintained, white fences. Old country houses But it is not all bad: So much quiet and peace Relationships with animals Stability Community of doers Membership Plug MeWe reminder Make it a great week! Song: GUYS! S4 Ep 445Episode 445 - Canning Beets

It's beet season! Today I will run you through how to process beets pickled, sauce and pressure canned July Webinar: Canning Meat - July 24 at 2pm. Stump the Sauce Hey, I heard one of your latest podcast about the price of eggs at the store vs. the local farm and had a brain wave... If it's true that farm eggs are more nutritious then wouldn't it be good idea to market your eggs not in "$&¢", but in terms of "nutritional value" similar to purchasing regular gas and premium gas. The premium gas might "appear" more expensive (I.e. farm eggs) however...you get more mileage (nutrition) out your dollars spent. I think if the customer saw two boxes of eggs side-by-side but priced in $/nutrition ratio then they might be more likely to pick the farm raised variety? S4 Ep 444Episode 444 - Why Meet In Person?

Over the weekend, we had all sorts of community happenings at the holler homestead and it got me to thinking about meeting in person and how important that it. I will share some of these thoughts as well as stories of our first ever open house on today's podcast. Feedback I want to thank you for your openness about your debt and perseverance regarding paying things off. In December/January you said something in a podcast that made me think how foolish I'd been the past five years with credit cards, car and motorcycle loans. After buckling done the past six months and accelerating pay downs, I'm paying off CC monthly now, paid off my car, and today made my last motorcycle payment. With all that's going on, I'm now free to focus on mortgage pay down, crypto, and savings. I'm still enjoying your coffee and will look on your site about becoming a member to show my appreciation. Tales from the Prepper Pantry Beets and pickles are done for 2021 Getting low on jars of all things (explain why) Weekly garden meal prep for easier living Freeze Dryer Access Project -- thoughts from listeners? Operation Independence Membership Portal Upgrades Slowly Rolling Out Main topic of the Show: Why Meet In Person? This past 18 months, meetings have increasingly been over computers and phones as folks have sought to avoid air travel and reduce exposure to the virus. As a result, kids know how to virtually attend school, adults who never could get their computers' webcams to work suddenly know zoom and toms meetings are held virtually. It has become a matter of preference in many cases to just avoid getting together in person and handle meetings over web conferencing systems. But is this the best way? How many of you have been to that awkward ZOOM birthday party or wedding? And how many have noticed an uptick in "weird" happenings where people kindo of lose their minds and hurt other people out and about in society? Continued isolation is making us crazy and it is no surprise. We are herd animals. We crave finding people we can relate to, we can be comfortable with. This is why those "loner libertarians" get so excited when they can throw a liberty fest -- like Porcfest in New hampshire each June. It is that feeling of well-being when you bother to get together in person. That is why when people want to come visit the Holler Homestead, I try very hard to make it work. And this year, those requests were up tenfold, so we decided to do a little test this weekend: What if we have an open house day here and just tell folks, here are the hours, stop by. No big agenda. No big personality speakers. Just come hang out and we will likely be doing homesteady stuff. Little did I know that there would be 68 chickens to process that day, derailing other demo concepts we had in mind. And yet people came -- about 20 of you in fact. Including a surprise visit from John and Amanda Willis who can now confirm that my little country road is very very rural. That's ok - it looked like their car could handle it. Things we learned and enjoyed... Someone will always show up an hour early - that's why we started at 10am Many hands make light work of chickens Next time, I will hire someone to do the food and beverage so that Jenni and I are not pulled away from guests There are fun people who bring fun things: Seeds to trade, John's Iced Tea, Angel and Kerry's finger foods A more set Demo Schedule will happen next time so people can time their visit -- it gets hot here in the summer and not everyone wants to bake in the sun for 5 hours But the biggest thing was thing: Y'all talked and talked and talked to each other. And then you talked some more. Even most of the introverts were just happy to be in person and talk about shared interests. But why is meeting in person so important? You build rapport and trust (Willis story) You can end up out of your space an on neutral ground (Barb Story) Words alone do not communications make. 55% nonverbal, 38% vocal, and 7% words only (Rabbit Processing Workshop) So if you know people who have self isolated for the past 18 months who are a little edgy when you talk to them -- remember this: They have not had one of the things that everyone needs - interaction. They have only had 45% communication with their peers when they do interact. And that means that the missing 55% takes you off balance. You start trying to build that into your narrative. You make up stuff in your head. So as you look at your summer and fall plans and start feeling that tiny bit of anxiety that can come when you try to decide -- Do I take a weekend and go to Rogue Food Conference at Polyface in August, or Green Chili Day in September, or to my high school reunion, think of it not in terms of what you wont get done that weekend, or how tired people make you sometimes. Think about how far trust can get you? When you meet a few people with whom you can relate, with shared interests. How great it can be to think- I remember meeting that one lawyer guy

S4 Ep 441Episode 441: Best Lesson From The 2020 Pandemic

Holler Homestead Open House and Canning Demo Last Week's Webinar Video is up on the Member Portal Tales from the Prepper Pantry Failing on meal planning and staying on whole foods: Hard boiled eggs, cheese, celery sticks, bacon and eggs, Mahi, green beans and summer squash, roasted new potatoes, red veined sorrel, pesto on something with green garlic and fresh basil. But my health got in the way. And yet this may be the most important show topic of 2021. This show is in part about the biggest lesson to be learned from the 2020 pandemic, how officials and our societies reacted to it, and maybe even a little about why what some of us THINK is the biggest lesson learned should be reexamined if it is not this lesson. But more important about today is what got me to thinking of this lesson. It was a friend, fellow farmer/homesteader. A guy by the name of Steve who works really really hard to live life on his terms. Steve is not a young man, and he has even had an organ transplant. His ticker ain't what it used to be either. Steve is the kind of guy who meets lots of people and he somehow manages to bring out the best, to encourage them to just get started on doing what they say they want to do. The longer you talk to Steve, the more you realize how incredible his life has been and the sheer number of things this man has done - and he has done them well. And the best part? He is not a loudmouth like me -- he observes and is sort of quiet. But when he talks, people listen. And when he hears I cant from someone, he asks why. You may wonder what in the world Steve has to do with my pandemic lesson? Well that is the thing. If I ask most people around me what their biggest lesson learned I will get one of the following lessons: Supply Chains Are Unstable (centralization vs decentralization) The Media Controls the Narrative More Than We Thought People Are Anti Science People Do Not Understand How Science Works People Are Selfish And We Must Control Those Jerks Big Tech, Big, Ag, Big Government, New World Order, Growth in Freedom Networks And while all those things may be lessons you can take from the pandemic, which one is the biggest? I must admit, I have spun like a pinball from idea to idea dn lesson to lesson over the past year and a half -- and YES -- we have been doing this for a freaking year and a half now my friends. A year and a half you will never get back. And last week, I started thinking about what you and I and others are never getting back (depending on how far we took things): A year and a half of: Seeing faces Hugs Being together in groups Flying Going to work Income Birthday parties Hand shakes Building rapport Trust New relationships Stability and community People have lost so much: Homes Loved ones Businesses Jobs Confidence Joy All for what? An illness with between a 99%-and 99.5% survival rate according to the sources that so many have come to distrust. I pulled that from the CDC in case you are wondering. Compare it to the flu: 99.5% survival rate. Now we all know that older people have increased risk and I am not discounting that. But look at what we have given up? The hugs, seeing grandma and grandpa, crying over zoom. Guys, we are herd animals. We need each other to be whole. Without community - even if we like being solitary -- without community we suffer. When we suffer, our health goes down hill. There were times in the last 18 months when people were drawing their last breath all alone in a room in a hospital, not allowed to have their children with them, holding their hands. For fear of spreading the disease, even if they were not dying from covid. Which begs the question did that even make sense? Enter Steve. Steve is the kind of guy in an age bracket of the highest risk, with a compromised immune system. Know what Steve gave up for the pandemic? Nothing. Not a damn thing. Steve was in the hospital with surgery complications last fall for about two months. A week or two after he got out, he was at an event in Texas hugging his friends sharing his knowledge, selling his rabbit cages (and the man makes AMAZING rabbit cages), and having a grand time. There was not a mask to be seen at this event. Know what Steve said about that? He said, I'd rather live the days I have left than hide from the virus. Steve knew his risks. And he knew the consequences of getting ill with Covid. And he knew the bigger risk was not living for 18 months of the time he had left. So Steve lived life and mentored the people he came across. And therein is the lesson: The bi

S4 Ep 437Episode 437: What Really Matters?

Today we will discuss what really matters in the new world order, the great reset, and many other "conspiracies" that are turning out to be based in truth. Canning Demo June 17 at 12pm Central: Waterbath Canning Relocation Roundtable: June 17 at 7pm Central Email feedback to [email protected] Tales from the Prepper Pantry Successful Travel Food Harvest Right has an affiliate program! https://affiliates.harvestright.com/1095.html Learning to store freeze dried foods - advice from Amanda Willis Holler Neighbor Crockpot meals are paying off Operation Independence Rogue Food Summary Main topic of the Show: What Really Matters? What really matters to people? What do we truly care about. If you take this question from a survival standpoint: we need water, oxygen and food to survive. The next layer is shelter and health, family and relationships. Then community, comfort, mental challenges, spiritual pursuits. Creative endeavors. As we are able to cover our basic survival needs, we gain something very important: time. And time is the thing that we can use to become stronger and better. To keep our world beautiful. To create widespread security for ourselves and those around us. Why then are our most basic needs -- those things that we require to survive -- why are they outsourced to a faceless bureaucracy? Have you ever taken a deep look into situations where genocide is inflicted on a people? Where one set of humans decide that it is ok to torture, murder and cause widespread suffering to another set of humans? Have you ever seen what happens right before the boiling point is reached? Usually you will find that the basic survival needs are controlled by a select, powerful few. You will find that there is widespread shortages and that suffering has occurred. That parents cannot feed their children or themselves. And how do we get to this point? We live on a prosperous plant full of oxygen, with lots of water, and able to produce food in the most harsh of environments. As humans have developed, we have figured out how to cover our basic survival needs and we have created time. Time for spiritual pursuits. As humans have developed, we have put our minds to tough problems like how to get more food from less and less land to keep more and more of us alive. And some have developed systems. Systems that provide "food security"' and other such promises for all who participate. And from this, they have realized that people who are unable to provide for their own basic needs, who have forgotten how nature works, who are set up with unrealistic expectations for what they "need" to survive. These people will do almost anything to keep getting what they need. They will work endlessly. They will murder their peers. They will look the other way as the earth is harmed. They will give up their freedom of motion, of thought. They will beat the other humans into compliance. As dependency increases, so does control. And who is in control? To which I ask - why do you care about that?Have you ever stopped to think about how fragile our centralized food system in this country is? We have systems set up to provide more and more food from fewer and fewer sources. The policies here are developed to protect those few sourced from competition from many distributed ones. Have you ever stopped worrying about the med in "big food" sitting in back rooms selling off our health to save a few pennies on production and looked beyond the who and why to focus on what it means? Our centralized food systems create two things: 1) Immense amounts of food for everyone to eat. 2) One of the most obvious targets to control our population. Take down the few places and ways that food is produced and distributed and guess what? Grocery stores are empty in about 48 hours. And most of the population has no idea how to get food without going into a store, taking things off the shelf, and bringing them home. I don't know about you, but I find that alarming. Do you? Do you know how to get food if it isn't on the shelves in the store? You see, all the time and power that we waste on figuring out how to take Monsanto down, or tear apart Walmart---to hold those men in the back rooms of food factories accountable for making us sick. All the time we spend reading up on the dawn of big ag and pharmaceuticals. That is time you will never get back. It is really only useful as a tool to assess the world you live in. And the time you spend in outrage about it is wasted. Or in the words of my frond Jack Spirko -- it doesn't matter why, it matters that. Now, if one of your creative pursuits is digging into history and research on such things -- by all means - enjoy! But if you want to live in a world where your most basic need is covered -- the need to find nourishment for yourself, your family and your community. Stop focusing on the assholes who got us here and start participating on developing a stable alternative to centralized food. Being part of a solution

S4 Ep 425Episode 425 - Focus on Nutrition with Niti Bali

Today I am excited to talk food, nutrition and freedom with Niti Bali, author of Farm to Fork Meat Riot and outspoken supporter of empowering people to take control of their health via taking control of what they put in their bodies. Chicken Processing Workshop, June 14 starting at 9am here in Lancaster, TN. Show Resources Niti The Farmacist Main content of the show Niti Bali is the Founder and CEO of Farm to Fork Meat Riot, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization serving as a catalyst for reestablishing the regenerative small family farm food system. Her strategically designed CSA program educates eaters to harness the power of life giving force through regenerative foods. Niti's Farm to Fork Meat Riot CSA simultaneously supports regenerative livestock production based on consumption that results in a zero-waste system. This balanced program allows farmers, ranchers and artisans to operate with less risk and earn fair wages while growing their operations organically to fit the natural demand for this higher quality food. Niti's passion for sharing regenerative food began after her 2-year-old daughter was diagnosed with Esthesioneuroblastoma in 2007. Meenakshi underwent 5 rounds of toxic chemotherapy that did not stop the cancer. As a mother fighting for her child's life, Niti embarked on a holistic mission to source the cleanest, most regenerative foods from local farms. Although Niti cured Meenakshi's cancer with real nutrient dense food, the damage to her vital structures from the chemo was too great and Meenakshi died September 13, 2009. Since then, Niti has made it her mission to protect her family and others from the corporate food system. Niti is developing regenerative farmers and regenerative consumers while producing educational media in the way of her podcast and interview show. She lives in Raleigh, NC with her husband and 2 surviving children and continues to challenge us one bite at a time. Interview Membership and Coffee Pitch Make it a great week GUYS! S4 Ep 424Episode 424 - Invest in Doers at LFTN 2021

It's that time again - time to debrief the LFTN 2021 Workshop. Each year, we have a different experience. Each year, a different set of people. And each year, an unexpected lesson emerges when folks get together to share best practices, fun, and deep conversations. Unlike other years, we did not have the workshop centered around a build. No rocket mass heater was installed. No solar water heater. No aquaponics system. Instead, we narrowed down on an important theme: Thrive. And to thrive, we must invest. Invest our intelligence, invest our time, invest our focus, invest in our relationships, invest in our land. There was a mix between practical homesteading skills like making cheese, processing a pig, sharpening knives and developing important skills like structuring your business, integrating better finance tracking to optimize tax deductions, and learning about crypto currency. Taking responsibility for your health, whether it be learning the when and how of using a tourniquet, exploring herbal remedies, or getting your diet in line were all things that came up. Why is this related to thrive? Because so many of us want something different. We want to stand on our own two feet. To live as we want not as we are told. And many who embark on that journey to get more from their home or homestead end up with an expensive hobby that costs more than it brings in. So why not learn to have the best of both worlds? Why not analyze your expensive hobby and make it pay you, rather than cost you. Why not learn to see things as an investment, whether that be time, money or health that you are using and growing. Because at the end of the day, you have one life to live, so why not live it the way you want? In previous years, we have done a play by play, but this year is different. This year, many in our network stepped out of their comfort zone, first having the bravery to come to a strange homestead in Tennessee where they would find no one they have ever met, standing in front of the group and speaking, when they are shy about speaking, and even trying camping for the first time in order to be here. No worries - we never force anyone into any of these things, but it can be very hard for some to just show up at a big event with lots of people they never met. And to celebrate those who decided to make a change, to take control of their lives, and do something different, we will have an interview today from one of the participants who sent me a guest form right after she got home. Many of you have heard from Krystal Moralee on our Mewe group and she is not the sort of person who loves speaking in front of people. Yet she was so inspired after the LFTN event, that she agreed to hop on the podcast and give you the perspective of a first time attendee. I bring you Krystal - welcome to the show! Guest Bio Krystal Moralee is a writer in the small Michigan town where she grew up. She is passionate about the written word and enjoys adventuring in wild places with her two boys, photography, growing flowers, raising chickens and putting holes in things at the gun range. How did you first find this podcast? What made you finally decide to take the leap and attend an LFTN workshop? What were your expectations heading into the workshop once you committed to attend? Were your expectations met? Was there anything unexpected? Which parts of the workshop did you get the most value from? What would you recommend if someone has been thinking about attending a workshop but is hesitant to take the leap? S4 Ep 423EPISODE 423 – REPLAY SOWING SEEDS WITH SUPERB PEOPLE

Today is the day you have been waiting for – the day that we do the LFTN workshop rundown. But unlike other years, instead of a blow-by-blow I thought I would center this on the community that we have at LFTN. So today's run through will be of the superb people who attended the event and what they brought to the community. I think you are going to like this approach. Tales from the Prepper Pantry Pantry restocking is back to normal Get ready for a turbulent fall by stocking up Canning beets, pickles Butchering half a pig this week from our friend over at schoolbell farm – he may still have some pork available so reach out if you want some Operation Independence Added $340 to the independence fund in honey – not sure what the dr bill will be though Basecamp is so.very.close. Main topic of the Show: Sowing Seeds with Superb People Grow 2020 – when I came up with that topic for the workshop, I had no idea what the first 6 or even three months of 2020 would bring. Many of us are walking around wondering which shoe will drop next, uncertain of what our future earning potential is, pissed off that the political factions are willing to tear everything down in order to win — it makes a person uneasy, doesn't it. This year's LFTN workshop was likely the one that has made the biggest impact on me personally and I think on most of the attendees as well. Perhaps it was because we came together as this time, a group of doers and helpers, all in one place. It can be very difficult to convey the power of getting a group together like this once a year on an audio podcast and I took a few weeks to think about the best way to highlight the event, then I realized it was simple really. You see while we had great food, fun and content for the workshop — that is not what made it so powerful. It was you, the attendee, that did that. Every single person at the event had something to offer. Every single person did something that I am thankful for. Sunday, after the great bee sting of 2020, I was talking with Jenni and she dropped a gem in my lap. She said something like "You know how you said that there was no huge "a-ha" moment at the workshop but that a major corner was turned. I think it was the theme – grow – that did that. We were all in the grow mindset. And if you think about how you grow things, you start with the soil and a seed and do a bunch of work. And nothing happens, until one day, there is a little teeny plant. And you nurture that until it is a big plant and pretty soon you have something that is a great big plant providing you with shade and food. That is kind of how the workshop was. And she was right – this is the perfect way to describe it. We started with the hard stuff on Thursday, including a session about working through grief and taking care of your PTSD – which was somber indeed – and we did the hard work together, with and for each other, so that by the end most of us were ready to go back out, encouraged, and ready to grow what we want to grow no matter what the world brings. And that, my friends, is the power of getting together once a year. A group of doers not takers. People who like to help and allow themselves to be helped. Who take responsibility for their current mistakes and next chapter. Yes, we demoed knife sharpening, knife throwing, how to make a hoop row cover for a raised bed, fermentation basics, a solar hot water heater, tasted homemade salad dressings and pimento cheese, and bourbons, and feta cheese, and salsa, and fresh salad, and smoked meatloaf and brats, and a pretty tasty venison ham. We played yard games and sang karaoke. We helped people accelerate their new and existing business ideas. But the people. This year was all about the people. So I wanted today to give a rundown of who was there and why I am thankful for their contributions: Make it a great week! Song: Wolf by Sauce GUYS! S4 Ep 418Episode 418 – What are you afraid of?

What are you afraid of? What is the worst that can happen? What keeps you up at night. Join me today as we take a little look under the hood of our fears. Announcements: Rabbit processing class May 2nd 10am Email Emily Morse Deposit of $20 required to hold your spot via Venmo or PayPal LFTN MEMBERS ONLY WEBINAR: April 27, 7pm CT, Relocation Roundtable (LivingFreeinTennessee.com) Next week will be replays. Tales from the Prepper Pantry GSD Weekend from the pantry and garden: Charcuterie, stew, eggs and bacon, tacos Honey season will be here soon Skipped the April resupply – working toward quarterly Restocking Mullein leaves (Sinus tea: Mullein, mint, ginger) Operation Independence $50 drywall Solar Water Heater is up and running (going to add a timer at some point) Main topic of the Show: What are you afraid of? Yesterday, as I watched my neighbor totter on a ladder while fastening roofing metal on the roof of a tools shed, I thought about safety. I really do not like to be on wobbly ladders. So much so that tall tasks do not get done unless I find someone else to do them. So much so that I have been pricing out scaffolding so that I can do more things on my taller properties. I just don't feel safe up there on a wobbly ladder. And safety is they key. As I watched Knighthawk on that ladder yesterday I realized that people have a strong need to feel safe. In an idea world, even as we are being raised as children, we learn to feel safe at night under comfy blankets, we swaddle our babies so they feel safe, we are driven by fear of not having shelter or food to find jobs and make money to pay for our safety. We develop the odd fear of crossing roads, going outside, bees, spiders, snakes because we fear what may happen to us if something goes wrong. As I thought about safety, I realized that many of the decisions we make are driven by this desire for safety – and sometimes that is good and sometimes that is bad. We stop and look before we cross the road for fear of being hurt or killed by a car. Or, we choose the wrong life partner because we are afraid to be alone. These two fears are a little different though when you take a closer look: The one is not really a fear response, but rather an understanding of consequences and the action that needs to be taken to avoid a negative one. In essence, you have looked at the fear of being hurt or killed, understood how to avoid it, erased the fear, and developed a way of interacting with cars and roads that is healthy. The second example is a different story: you have not addressed your fear, you have fed it. You have taken the fear of being alone and given it power over your ability to make the best decision for yourself. Yes – I am putting a value judgement here on choosing to be with someone who is not the right someone because you are more afraid of being alone than you are of being enduringly unhappy in your partnership. Can you make lemonade out of lemons? Sure. But what would be different if you addressed your underlying fear and came up to the same decision? Would you do something different? And if so, would it be a better long term outcome? Let's look at some examples of fear and what drives them – Afraid to Fly Story. (So you do not fly) Death/Being Injured – But why? Leaving loved ones unsupported – fix this – Unknown ---harder to address. Find the why and address it. >Death/Being Injured (things that make it happen vs death itself) Afraid of Ending Up Alone (So you choose to be with or stay with an unhealthy arrangement) – But why? 1. Discovery in silence of things about yourself you need to fix. 2. No one to take care of you when you are ill (see fear of death). Afraid of Spiders, etc (So you alter your world when they show up. Bee story). 1. See fear of death. Failure. I will build this wrong, not be successful in my presentation, etc. workshop example. (So you say no to opportunities). But why are you afraid? (1. Lose income. (See fear of death) 2. Lose respect of loved ones. (see fear of death) Being Wrong About Something – freezing green beans. What is the worst that can happen? (See failure) Being awkward around people – acceptance – see fear of being alone. The house break in/camping alone/ walking at night. See how most of these fears are the same fear? See how they can grossly alter important decisions? It is really interesting how fear can drive either good or bad depending on how far you have thought it through. Depending on if you have addressed the underlying problem. You always hear people say things like "Get right with God" so that you can move on. How about we get right with ourselves about mortality and really understand what the consequences are that we fear. Those unnamed things that we do not want to leave undone, unsupported, or unsaid. We talk about how freedom is a choice here – but so if fear. You choose whether to embrace fear as a positive tool toward deeper understanding or forward momentum. Or we choose to let fear stop us from t

S4 Ep 417Episode 417 - TOTW on Availability

Today is a thought of the walk on being always available. What is the thought of the walk? Well, every so often I take my dogs for a walk. This clears the mind and opens me up for thought. These short, one-topic episodes are simply my way to share thoughts with you and invite your feedback. Schedule for the next two weeks. Webinar on April 27, 2021, 7pm CT: Relocation Roundtable Main topic of today's show: TOTW on Availability The text message comes in and my notices are off for the night. I have no idea it happened. The next morning when I wake up, what has started as an unanswered question has ended with an apology for offending me. But I am not offended - I was just asleep. I reply with that information. This happens to me about 4 times a week. It is why my phone has silent hours programmed into it. It happens when I do not answer emails immediately. It happens when I do not pick up the phone. We have come to expect the people we are seeking to reach immediately and if we do not, we tell ourselves a story about why. We allow our insecurities to taint the story toward the other party either being angry, offended, or dead. Our story is usually wrong. Always Available. The expectation is of always available. This unhealthy culture fostered by tech giants, buy the devices that were supposed to set us free, and by an increasingly entitled population. Saturday night at midnight, you realize something you bought on Amazon is broken and you hop online to return it. You use their customer support chat feature and someone processed the refund right away. You post something for sale on Facebook marketplace and someone sends you a message at 2 in the morning. By the time you wake up, Facebook has reminded you to answer it multiple times. Being always available is an expectation for some but it is also at the root of the following things: Taking too much time to do something due to multiple interruptions Inability to sleep/get to sleep at night Loss of closeness in relationships with our children, and pretty much anyone we spend time with Inability to create space for mental and spiritual development Getting fat Car accidents Neglecting that which is most important It is one thing to be the person who is paid to be "always available" on night shift for a set period of time. It is quite another to be always available in every moment of your every day. We sometimes look fondly at the past and romanticize how it was back then. But on the topic of being always available, the 80s had something going for them: the person you were trying to reach had to be home to pick up the phone. If they were on the toilet when it rang, it was unlikely they could finish and race to the wall into which the phone was plugged in to answer. We pretty much were accustomed to waiting for a callback without being offended. And there was a negative aspect to this: When the phone rang, you pretty much dropped everything to get it. And that set the foundation for an expectation of being always available as cell phones became ubiquitous in our lives. We took a thing that needed an immediate response to connect us to loved ones and information -- or you had to take more action to connect -- and we made it possible to carry said item in our pockets everywhere without removing the expectation that we immediately respond to calls. Then we added text. Then email. Then calendar notices. Then chat apps and social media. The cellphone is basically a tiny, mobile computer at this point, not really just a phone and the expectation is that because we can carry it around, we should respond to any of the 20 or so ways people have to reach us. And this is causing a terrible communication problem. If you can reach someone in 20 ways, you might as well not reach them at all because you are now depending on their built-in computer -- the brain -- to remember that chat you had, or the text you sent, or that long email they skimmed, or your comment on facebook. Always available has transformed into -- always available on all ways. This is not reasonable. This is not good for you or me. This is one of those places where you can redefine the expectation in your lie and find yourself with more time in the garden, better relationships with those around you, and fewer dropped balls. Just stop being always available. Change it to reasonably available. Let those closest to you know how you set it up. Then enforce the methods. Eventually folks will no longer expect a returned text at 2am or 9pm or whenever you go into silent mode. Eventually folks will catch on that you do not have email conversations via SMS. Eventually people will learn more efficient ways to interact with you -- and from there with others. But it is a retraining effort and the retraining starts with no one other than you. Today, I joked with the rednecks that I was scheduling my daily breakdown for 4pm today and that I would keep them informed of my breakdowns which will happen for about an hour a day bet

S4 Ep 415Episode 415 - What are you waiting for?

Today, we will take a deeper dive into things that hold you back, why they do, and what to do next. That's right - Spring has sprung, Easter has passed, the year is 30% behind us, so what are you waiting for? Such a simple question and yet one that often gets in our way. Tomorrow at 11CT I am Livestreaming – check out her channel here. Tales from the Prepper Pantry Quarterly Freezer Audit Easter supper from the pantry: roast beef, sweet potatoes, cheesy broccoli, gravy, superb fresh salad Feta batch one is being launched this week - and just like that the pantry season has changed from use up to fill up Two people vs one perspective (Mama Sauce is in town) Featured forages: Spring salad Wild mustard Watercress Nettle Deadnettle Chickweed Operation Independence Bees swarmed -- honey season is nigh Workshop prep is going really well Main topic of the Show: What Are You Waiting For? I am one of those people that folks tend to quickly trust with personal information. They will run things by me that they may not share with others. One time, I asked Tactical, why do people tell me things? He said - well because it is easy to tell you hard things because you don't judge. But that isn't entirely true. Maybe I do not judge things the traditionally judgemental way that people do when they hear about past trauma or trials. Those things are what form us into the good people we can all be today. I don;t even care if someone once was a terrible person and has changed over time and wants to confess that. actions speak louder than words and if I can see that they are not a bad actor. But the idea that I do not judge is not exactly right. I DO judge, and sometimes pretty harshly. Like all of us, I have very limited time to invest in projects, people and creative pursuits. That means that if I even sense for a moment that someone is not serious about doing the thing that they want my help with, I have a hard time giving time to them, even when offered money for consulting. This is the curse of the consultant who is motivated by helping people succeed rather than by earning as much money as possible. So really, I may be the most judgemental person you know on some ways. I just don;t see a reason to inflict my perspective on someone who isn't ready to hear it. As humans, we can be very fickle, facing depression, fatigue. Committing to things that we did not realize would take so much time. Wanting more more more. Yet some of us fall prey to what are you waiting for syndrome to a much higher degree than others. Last year, I lost 20 lbs, doubled my business after it looking like it was going to be cut in half instead, and managed to pay off my debt faster than originally thought and it boiled down to one question I would ask almost every day: What are you waiting for? We are so easily distracted, aren't we? What is it that you really want to do? That is often the underlying cause of this syndrome. If I do not start I will not find out that I do not want this thing I think I want. To which I ask - so what? Start. Find out. Worst thing that can happen is you deciode to abandon course and do something else. These are all things that make us wait: Setting up situations where you need someone else to do something before you can move forward and they are not delivering.a) You can't find the drywaller to do the drywall repairs (Wood chip story) The time is not right because of money/resources/economy You do not have enough time to do it You are not ready to handle high volume Your logo/marketing/business structure/website is not built Every time you try to learn or do the thing, you run into a brick wall (NFT) I can't find it I don;t like to do it - eat that frog The flip It is not magic, it is perspective. Changing you perspective will not solve every ill, but it will do one very important thing: change the programming in your brain so that that powerful computer you walk around with every day has time to come up with a solution. Emergency find is low? What are you waiting for? Sell some crap, drive uber, take that overtime, do something to fill it back up. Debt keeping you from scouting out on your own? That's great because it is easy to solve when you decide to solve it. Your divorce messing with your head, finances and turning your world upside down? Of course it is! What will you make of yourself through it? How will you address the turmoil you cannot stop? But is it causing you to wait until it is done to start making the life you want? Why? What are you waiting for? Some magical court document confirming the situation? That could take weeks or it could take years. Meanwhile, you could be doing something to pick up and build your next masterpiece. What are you waiting for? Someone else to decide? Screw that -- you decide. This life is all about you decide. You choose the life you want to live, or be miserable living a life someone else chooses for you. Do you really want that kind of control over your head? I know I don't. That i

S4 Ep 413Episode 413 - LFTN Q and A for March 30, 2021

Today we have a wide array of questions to answer from the network. How do these questions come in? Mewe, Telegram and by emailing me. So today, we will cover the following: Hosting your WordPress website What to do if you were using an electrical canner and the power went out before the processing cycle was finished Thoughts on being in mid or later life and freshly on the dating market - or something like that Preparing a garden plot this year for use next year when you have goats Dealing with the anxiety of future shortages Should I bring back #HollerHatWednesday? Boring but pays the bills... I've been amazed at how red hot our business has been during whatever covid name you want to use... The commercial buildings everywhere are empty. Owners are taking this time to do a bunch of deferred maintenance but that is starting to run out. New buildings are being rushed to completion and new ones are coming out of the ground. Not sure why... However, our major suppliers are about to be completely out of computer chips to build controllers. The problem is Fab plants around the world are idle. A secondary issue is there are billions of dollars in product floating around on ships that can't unload to due covid restrictions. Industry, in general, may come to a screeching halt soon. Not wanting to focus on the negative, I feel that many people have already forgotten last years pain. I think we need to stay positive and continue to focus on shoring up our defences to be ready for the next wave. S4 Ep 410Episode 410 - Success with Mentors

Today, I will highlight two examples to approaching someone you may want as a mentor, or from whom you would just like a little advice. Why does this matter? Because as you go through life, you will find, from time to time, that you wish to learn or try new things, -- or that you may start a business or side hustle -- and a great way to avoid mistakes that are obvious to someone with experience, but not obvious to you, is to hold an interview, go to a demo, become an intern, or find a mentor. And in the last few weeks, I have been approached by two people with very different approaches and they got very different reactions from me. It made me think - let's look at the two approaches and learn from that. Announcements I will be out of town at Jack Spirko's Spring workshop giving a presentation on building community so the next two episodes this week will be replays and I have chosen some good ones. Tales from the Prepper Pantry We preserved too much food last year Cool Canning opener from a 3d printer arrived, will test it when I get back Sweet potatoes are coming to an end -- starting slips Starting to come to the end of last year's pork Operation Independence Outdoor kitchen 2.0 plans are underway Main content of the show: Approaching a Mentor There is nothing that will give a person pause as when someone asks to be mentored. That is a pretty big ask. Almost as big as getting married. Just kidding. It't not that big. But being a good mentor takes time, thought and follow-through. Over my life, I have asked three people if they would mentor me. Two of the three did a horrible job. But I have been mentored by many many along the way -- and gotten a hand up and helpful advice from hundreds more. A few weeks ago, I got two emails. Neither were asking for me to mentor them, but they were both seeking direction. Bth were about the coffee roasting business. Both got responses from me. One I was not only willing, but eager to help. The other quickly transitioned into an uncomfortable conversation that was taking scarce time. The former landed a call with me, the latter has disappeared into the ether. The other day I told some folks about these two interactions, including the email I penned but did not send that said, "It doesn't seem like you are very interested in pursuing this." I was pretty grumpy that day and may have been missing some tone from the former email. Person A, Email 1 Made a connection to why they wanted to talk with me (community) Asked the question up front Gave background Person B Started with the back story about them Made no personal connection Offered to be an unpaid intern ...I wasn't sure they knew much about coffee really SECOND ROUND Person A Scheduled call -- attended call -- had great questions Was cognizant of the time and did not try to linger (She was already dedicated to the path) Person B Replied to my suggestions with explanations of what they had tried and failed Ignored the offer of paid training Complained about running into barriers in the industry (In the planning steps…) THIRD ROUND Person A Did a bunch of research after the call Sent a short email with a quick question Person B An email with a non-excited sounding bit of interest in paid training. Maybe. On a roaster that is different than the one they want to get. More complaints about dead ends Finding a mentor or getting advice is sort of like dating. You do not go all in at once. You take things a step at a time and when the fit isnt good, move one before you get to invest. Time is spare and you are asking a favor Does the person have experience in the area you need? Personal connection matters Icantium will kill the momentum of your relationship -- avoid communicating it at all costs A little background research goes a long way This isn't very different than sales, only it is much easier to get access to folks for some quick advice than it is to part someone from their cash. It is still a transaction - they are giving you their time and knowledge, you are giving them a feeling if happiness from helping someone out. But in a world where lots of people want a little advice, it is much easier to invest this time into someone who seems like they will do something with it, has a positive outlook, does a little research, and is mindful of time investments. The funny thing about this interaction is that I realized something after all was said and done. Remember those two terrible mentors I mentioned? They were not terrible because they failed me. They were terrible because I failed them. I needed to be clear on what I was seeking. To find mindful ways to seek improvement and to learn things in between meetings. Instead, I got stuck in a cycle of Icantium and waiting. And the longer I waited, the less likely it was to happen. Life lessons can be humbling. Membership Plug MeWe reminder Make it a great week! S4 Ep 407Episode 407 - Don't Let The Rain Stop You

Today, I will talk about the history of the GSD Crew, what GSD is, and why you should never let the rain stop you. Not quite sure what that means? No worries. It will all make sense later! Tennessee folks: The NON GO feed producer is having an Animal food and nutrition workshop - April 2. https://mpsfarms.com/ Tales from the Prepper Pantry Pickled items are the best when you are overwhelmed and have guests Corn Chips Holler stew Failed Bacon Behind on garden planting but getting there 2 hours at a time Outdoor kitchen set up season Redoing Pantry storage shelves Operation Independence The Utility of Simplicity Learning How to Mint Tokens -- outside my comfort zone Main topic of the Show: Don't Let The Rain Stop You Do you know what a GSD weekend is? Some of you do if you have been listening for a very long time. In fact, it is the Tennessee GSD Crew that really got our network off on the right foot. >History of the GSD Crew, the first LFTN Workshop, and our growth as a community. This year, as you know, I am on a mission to find balance. And honestly, the idea of hosting a big group of people to help jumpstart the workshop preps was a bit overwhelming. You see, I have started the kind of house sorting that looks more like i am preparing to move out, then a house sorting. And it needs to be done so that my home empowers me rather than sucks my time. I had so much anxiety about this all week last week because people were going to arrive, I need to feed them, and there is no avoiding them seeing the utter chaos that is here. Jenni could see my panic last week and offered to centralize things at Basecamp, but I opted to just suck it up. These are people who know me. Who are willing to come out and dig fence posts for petes sake. If the chaos in my house makes them uncomfortable, well, then I guess they can leave. But you know what? That did not stop the story I was telling myself and it did not stop the anxiety either. I just decided to suck it up. The big day came, and along with it torrential rain. Starting Thursday last week, we were glued to the weather report, hoping beyond hope that there would be a break in the rains for the big project. A friend reached out -- are we still doing this? I said yes. You see, I am from Oregon and if you let the rain stop you, you will never get anything done in Oregon. On the agenda for the meetup was to install a fence. And a third composting outhouse. We had a tractor coming. We had an auger. We had posts and concrete. We had a fence stretcher. But I am not a total jerk. Jenni and I touched base about inside priorities in the event that the rain became too much to handle for outside work. But guys? When you have a tractor coming, you try to optimize tractor time. Rain or shine. A few months ago -- toolbox fallacy. We do this all the time Swimming example. And rain is just another toolbox fallacy. Mark, Nancy, Jenni, Landrik, Tactical, KH, Autofab, Chris, Ken, Jake GSD Accomplishments Shift focus! Basecamp basement is almost completely cleared of things that are not supposed to be in there (Without causing problems here) Bathroom sink at my house got installed -- mostly Mudroom shelves are in Land cleared and stumps moved Composting outhouse is framed and floored Fun was had Food was not as opulent as usual ---but was mostly passable Lessons Learned 1 full time person running the kitchen Foreman for each job The international space station Be real- it is always better to have a gsd weekend even if you are overwhelmed than to not move forward And back to the rain -- Don;t let it stop you. Sure, maybe in an downpour it is a bad idea to plant potatoes, but the rain should not stop forward momentum on something. And a little sprinkly should not stop the potato patch from being installed.
