How can we have a healthy relationship with social media, with Niomi Smart
There are nearly 3.5billion active social media users, and every 6.4 seconds a new account has been created. Many of us use our smartphones as companions. We update our friends, work colleagues and acquaintances on our daily movements and memorable moments in our lives. It speeds up how people exchange and share information, thoughts, and ideas across virtual networks. However, social media does have downsides. Some evidence suggests that its use in particular, its overuse — can negatively affect mental health in numerous ways. Meditation instead of Medication with Cornelius O'Shaughnessy
Meditation is a word we hear a lot today to help calm our minds and deal with daily stressors, but many of us still struggle to grasp it. How powerful is meditation and how can we take the first step? To kick off the first episode of series six, I invited Be Well Collective's meditation expert Cornelius O'Shaughnessy, to take us through his personal journey and a guided meditation. Having suffered from severe treatment-resistant depression and anxiety since he was 15, Cornelius began to explore alternative ways at managing the condition. He learnt some meditation techniques and they helped to a degree, but they didn’t seem to resolve his depression. It wasn’t until Cornelius began to travel to India and explore the ancient teachings about the mind that were traditionally taught alongside the practice that my state of mind began to shift in a meaningful way. After some years of searching, he came across a very powerful and ancient set of teachings that brought the practice to a new level. Shortly afterwards Cornelius depression and anxiety came to an end. I then began to teach others what I have learned. This episode is finished on a 10 minute guided meditation by Cornelius. Are we being fooled by food labels with Jenny Rosborough
We all believe we have a choice when it comes to choosing healthy food options, but do we really? Is our choice merely a small selection of what it chosen to be put in front of our eyes in the limited selection available to us? How to eat sustainability with dietitian Louise Symington
How can we achieve a dietary intake which protects our health and our planet at the same time? One that is affordable and equitable? When we look at food sustainability, we need to include protecting populations from non-communicable diseases such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, producing our food with fewer resources, such as land, water and fuel to help feed to fast growing population. And it doesn't stop there, ethical food labelling can be a minefield of who to trust and not to trust. To help me uncover this important topic, I speak to registered dietitian Louise Symington, aka the sustainable dietitian. With over 15 years experience, Louise has advised the Green Food Project and worked in food policy and worked with Sustain to provide schools and local authorities on providing good food quality. Why the future of our planet relies on the children of today with George Lamb
Food is complex. It doesn't just effect our health and general wellbeing, it also effects how we farm, how accessible it is to us and the affordability as well as political issues such as the recent agriculture bill. Yet, how could we help create a more sustainable and attainable food system? Will this begin with the children of today? George Lamb shares his personal story of leaving his celebrity life, after a realisation that it was no longer serving him. Growing an innate interest in how he could help shape a healthy world, his path lead him into education. Today he has created GROW. GROW works in schools and communities to promote mental well-being, physical health and a more hands-on relationship with the natural world.

Breast cancer, diet and health inequalities
With 2.5 million in the UK living with cancer, and breast cancer is the number one cancer for women, affecting 1 in 8 women in the UK. Yet, with 23% of breast cancers preventable in the UK, what could we be eating more and less of to help reduce our risk? Why is it that black women have the poorest health outcomes when it comes to breast cancer? Why are health inequalities still so prevalent in 2020? What do we need to change and how can we educate ourselves more on these health inequalities? To help me explore this further, I speak to Toral Shah, chef and nutritional scientist with a BSc in Cell Biology from UCL and an MSc in Nutritional Medicine from the University of Surrey, as well as the founder of Urban Kitchen. - Toral asked me to apologised for abbreviating her name to Tor at the end of the podcast. Henry Holland and Imposter syndrome
A 2019 study from Nottingham university claims that 7 in 10 workers in the UK had suffered from complex ‘imposter’ feelings that can sabotage careers and harm our mental health. Sadly, 7 in 10 (71 percent) of those who have found themselves furloughed, laid off, or made redundant this year are experiencing this feeling. In this weeks episode, I speak to Henry Holland, legendary British fashion designer. Henry opens up about his struggles with imposter syndrome, why men need to talk more about mental wellbeing and how he succumbed to drastic dieting due to the pressures of body image.

Jodie Kidd, living with Anxiety
Understanding how and why we suffer with mental health, is critical to supporting it. Do you often feel fear, stressed or anxious? You are not alone. Anxiety can persist; whether you know the root cause or not. It can make you imagine that things in your life are worse than they really are, and can prevent you from confronting your fears – you might even think you’re going mad. Jodie Kidd, international supermodel speaks to me with her devastating time battling anxiety and how it ultimately led to her hanging up her shoes for her successful modelling career. Jodie suffered with serve anxiety for many years which affected both her physical health and mental health so drastically, that she was beaten down by the press as a poor role model as well as her own self-worth and self-esteem. Listen to Jodie’s personal story and follow @be_well_collective for further help and information regarding anxiety disorders. #livewellbewell

An Agents View: Live Episode at Be Well Summit with Model Agent Karen Diamond from Models 1
It is not very often that we get to hear an agents view on models health. Many times people compare models to athletes. Needing to be strict with their diets and vigorous exercise regime, a short career in a high pressured environment. Mental health is known to suffer from daily comparisons of high standards and rejection. In the last of the LFW special season, I speak to Karen Dimond, owner and director of Models 1, a leading modelling agency in the heart of London. Karen speaks very openly acknowledging the press that agents get is absolutely dreadful - especially during London Fashion Week because there's a huge spotlight on models. Highlighting there's always going to be a front page picture of a slim model who has been shot at an angle to look incredibly thin, which then becomes something which is being celebrated, but the reality is you do have to be strong and healthy to be a model. Why comparing ourselves is so detrimental: Live Episode at Be Well Summit with Kimberley Wilson
No sensible discussion about body image can start without an understanding of Social Comparison Theory (SCT). We all compare ourselves, whether it is a physical trait, psychological quality, talent on finical value to others. The SCT looks at the pattern of those comparisons and the impact this has on our wellbeing and very importantly how this can affect our body image. In this special LFW episode, I invite psychologist and author, Kimberly Wilson on stage to discuss the social comparison theory and body image. Modelling and working in fashion comes with a lot of opportunities, but the tax young people pay for that is working in an industry where absolute strangers can critique your body. All day. Every day. In this kind of environment, our natural tendency to social comparison gets dialled up, which can put stain on relationships and the risk of self-objectification is real, affecting low self-esteem. Kimberly discusses the steps to take to help re address your values and how to create an anchor for your self esteem. This episode was recorded live at the LFW, Be Well Collective Wellbeing Summit 2020. For more information follow: @sarahannmacklin | @be_well_collective www.sarahannmacklin.com

Navigating the FODMAP diet for IBS treatment with Dr Jane Muir
We spend three quarters of a billion pounds on probiotic products that promise to balance our microbiome. We sip on kombucha and pickle kimchi. The evidence stacks when we discuss the connection between our brain and gut. With two out 10 people in the UK suffering with IBS, and no cure for those who suffer with IBS, severe IBS symptoms can heavily implode on peoples lives. In this episode I speak to Dr Jane Muir, lead dietitian at Monash university. Researchers at Monash discovered certain short chain carbohydrates could not be digested and caused aggravation for many people with IBS, naming these, FODMAPs. Although research suggests that there is not one single cause for IBS, there are a variety of treatments, including that can help improve symptoms and thus quality of life. We discuss how a low FODMAP diet may help improve symptoms of IBS, alongside other treatments such as CBT, hypnotherapy and movement. Understanding how your body responds to stress can be key to managing stressful situations and reducing the impact it has on your health, but are we coping with stress? Stress seems to be one of the greatest public health challenges of our time. Stress is a significant factor in mental health problems including anxiety and depression. It is also linked to physical health problems like heart disease, problems with our immune system, insomnia and digestive problems, but what if I told you, you could make yourself stress proof? When can our relationships with food become problematic with Renee Mcgregor
We all have an emotional connection with food, and for some during lockdown this has been emphasized more than others. Disruption to many of our carefully planned routines, lack of access to social networks and increased anxiety means food has become a comfort in time of need. Alongside the current media pressure to “transform yourself” during lockdown, these messages can amplify the internal dialogue and make the struggle with poor body image and a difficult relationship with food even harder. For many of us who rely on the gym or struggles with exercise addiction, seeing the nation’s newfound fitness craze under lockdown has also proved triggering. To help make sense of it all is Renee Mcgregor is a leading Sports and Eating disorder specialist dietitian with 20 years’ experience working in clinical and performance nutrition. Learning to accept ourselves with Caggie Dunlop.
It can be extremely hard to not compare ourselves to one another, yet this holds a negative impact in how we view ourselves. Changing your thoughts and beliefs because someone else either approves or disapproves, and ascribing your self-worth to the approval of others can become tiresome. It can also lead to anxiety, depression and eating disorders, among other mental health illnesses. I speak to Caggie Dunlop, who felt the pressures which fame brought, and opens up about her personal struggles. Pseudoscience and how it is harming our health with Dr Izzy Smith
Science is full of people who disagree with one another . If we all thought exactly the same way, we could retire and call the status quo truth. But when theories have no scientific backing behind them, and when people start to fear food which has no scientific evidence, we have to challenge that. Following on from last weeks episode with Dr Izzy Smith, we help to clarify some of nutrition myths. Celery juice has been tipped to cure digestive and immune disorders, fluoride use has been linked to autism and the oral conceptive has been linked to an increase risk of breast cancer. What is the truth and the facts? Find out in today's episode. Show Notes Host: @sarahannmacklin | www.sarahannmacklin.com Mental Health: @be_well_collective | www.be_well_collective.com

Dairy vs Soy, which is right for you with Dr Izzy Smith
The UK is now drinking 50% less milk than they were in 1974, and almost a quarter of Britons are consuming plant-based milk alternatives as the popularity of vegan diets continues to grow. Yet there is still a lot confusion about dairy and soy milk when it comes to our health. Does soy affect our breast cancer risk? Does soy interfere with our hormones? We've heard many times dairy leaches calcium from our bones, is this true? With so many misconceptions between soy and dairy, it's hard to differentiate between fact and fiction. In the first series of season 2, I speak to Dr Izzy Smith who is a medical doctor working in Sydney Australia, specialising in general internal medicine and endocrinology aka the study of hormone health. She is also a qualified personal trainer and ambassador for the Men’s health charity Movember and a passionate runner and athlete herself. #LiveWellBeWell @Sarahannmacklin

Live Episode: Gut Health and Diet Myths with Tim Spector
A live episode from the Be Well 2020 summit What is the real science behind what we eat? We are all increasingly bewildered by the simple question of what to eat. Despite advice from experts, governments and dieticians about the dangers of too much fat, sugar, protein and lack of exercise, our nutrition, and the global obesity crisis, is getting worse. There is one area which scientists do agree on, and that is the importance of our gut health. In this episode, Dr Tim Spector speaks live at Sarah Ann's Be Well Collective wellbeing event. Tim is a Professor of Genetic Epidemiology at Guys and St Thomas Hospital. Tm has published over 900 scientific journals, and leads the largest microbiome project in the UK, the Twin Study. Tim explains his wealth of knowledge relating to the gut microbiome, the facts behind what we eat, why people gain weight, fail to lose weight, and why allergy seems to be everywhere.
