Sidney Holmes, a 57 year old man from Florida in the United States, was convicted to 400 years in prison for armed robbery. After serving more than 34 years in prison as a convicted felon, he was released because it turned out he didn’t do what he was accused, convicted and sentenced for. Holmes said he never lost hope and always knew the day of his freedom would come. For every wrongful conviction not only is an innocent person wrongfully convicted, but a guilty person also walks around freely escaping justice. Scholars tell us John was the last surviving disciple, and that he wrote his gospel towards the end of the first century, about 30 years later than Matthew, Mark and Luke. By then the world had changed dramatically, the Romans had destroyed the temple and defeated the Jewish nation. At that time the scattered church was threatened with persecution, waning piety, and Greek heresies doubting the incarnation of Jesus. Inspired by the Holy Spirit, John wrote his gospel emphasising the divinity of Jesus as the promised Messiah and God in the flesh, who walked among men. Weather forecasting people can predict rain, fine weather or storms with surprisingly impressive accuracy, but only for a short time into the future—just a few days at best. God is different, He knows the end from the beginning. He reveals the future through His prophets in the Bible. Although God does this to strengthen our faith when we see prophecy fulfilled, He also does it to warn us of earth’s closing events, so we will be prepared, and so that He can guide us safely home.
