Perhaps the greatest event in human history happened on a Sunday morning. Jesus of Nazareth rose from the dead, and left behind an empty tomb. This event is the basis for the hope of us all, that Jesus will raise back to life all those that die with their faith in him. Weather forecasting people can predict rain, fine weather or storms with surprisingly impressive accuracy, but only for a short time into the future—just a few days at best. God is different, He knows the end from the beginning. He reveals the future through His prophets in the Bible. Although God does this to strengthen our faith when we see prophecy fulfilled, He also does it to warn us of earth’s closing events, so we will be prepared, and so that He can guide us safely home. ‘The Trial of God (as it was held on February 25, 1649, in Shamgorod)’ is a fictional play Elie Wiesel wrote about God as a defendant in a mock trial where He is accused of permitting the massacre of His children. In a plot twist, the author of the play claims such a trial occurred in the Nazi concentration camp of Auschwitz, but historians question the accuracy of that claim. Whether there was such a trial or not, there is a cosmic trial of sorts taking place right now, where God’s character is called into question and His love tested. Is He truly a loving God or a selfish tyrant? Our study will look into this Great Controversy theme. Some Psalms declare a desire to visit and dwell securely in Zion. Of the 150 Psalms, 20 specifically mention Zion. Is Zion a place, a political ideology, a symbol, or a theology? All of us are influenced, and limited, by the assumptions of our cultures and worldviews. For us to successfully present the gospel to people who have vastly different views, homework is necessary. Homework that identifies our special bridge of common interest, allowing us to address their needs and earn their favour. We will be most successful if we’re flexible, resourceful, and open-minded in regards to new (and even unfamiliar) approaches to God’s mission.
