Joseph stands out as a great patriarchal figure, similar to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Although he was the 11th son of Jacob, he was the first son of Jacob’s true love, Rachel. Joseph’s early life with his brothers was turbulent, and Jacob’s family was heading for trouble. Abram and his wife Sarai obeyed God’s call to travel south from Haran to Canaan. After a 700km journey they arrived in Canaan—at a place called Sichem. A covenant is made with Abram to give the land to Abram’s children. But Abram was 75 years old (and Sarai 65), and they didn’t have any children. Mention the word Babel without context, and it will mean different things to different people. It can be the name of an island in Tasmania; the name of a journal of linguistics; the name of a minor planet; or even a music label. In Genesis 1 God pronounces His six days of creation as being “very good.” But Genesis 3 records that the crowning act of creation (the first two humans, Adam and Eve) disobey God, and the curse of sin enters the world. Adam and Eve are cast out of Eden. Genesis 4 has the tragedy of Cain killing Abel and Cain’s offspring separating themselves from God. Genesis 5 outlines the chronology from Adam down to a man called Noah. And in Genesis 6 God declares His creation is no longer very good, and is instead continually evil. Paul’s letter to the Hebrews was intended to inspire and encourage the Hebrew readers with their faith in Jesus while they were experiencing persecution. In Hebrews 5 and 6, Paul admonishes his audience because they are feeding upon the milk of the Bible, he says it would benefit them to migrate to the more solid food of God’s word. Those who do this find their senses awakened to more accurately discern between both good and evil (see Hebrews 5:14). Today we conclude our series looking at the Book of Deuteronomy. Deuteronomy means “second law,” and it contains a series of appeals Moses gave the Israelites as they approached the borders of the promised land. In essence Moses says: “You are finally about to enter the Promised Land! Once you do, don’t forget what the Lord has done for you, nor what He asks of you now — to love Him with all your heart and soul, and to demonstrate that love by obeying all His commandments.” Although the children entered the Promised Land, Moses only saw it from afar. While some Christians believe the Old Testament no longer has any authority or relevance, Jesus (and other inspired writers of the New Testament) used the Jewish Scriptures as an authority in their life, their actions, and their teachings. In this way they affirmed what Mark recorded: “the Scriptures must be fulfilled” (Mark 14:49). The Old Testament was quoted, alluded to, and referenced by the Gospel writers and the Apostle Paul, therefore the Old Testament has authority in our lives too. The Christian God of the Bible has a special liking for the number seven. The seventh day was the sabbath day, the seventh year was the sabbatical year, and after 49 years (7 × 7) came the year of Jubilee. The seventh new moon was the day of trumpets, the seventh month of the year was for festivals. The Passover lasted seven days, seven weeks lie between Passover & Pentecost, and the Feast of Tabernacles lasted seven days too. Even Jewish boys were circumcised at seven days old. In the Book of Revelation there were seven churches, seven seals, seven trumpets, and seven last plagues. Many stories have come to light through the media of people who have been able to forgive perpetrators of crime. The act of forgiveness has been healing both for the person forgiven, and for the one offering forgiveness. In her classic 1960s prize-winning novel, “To Kill a Mockingbird,” American writer Harper Lee has her main character say “you can choose your friends but you sure can't choose your family.” Sometimes our relationships with family members can be difficult—to say the least! But we can find peace in such circumstances. Today we are going to look at a remarkable story of a young man who grew up in a troubled, dysfunctional family, and how he found peace amongst life’s hardships. Joseph suffered rejection, physical and verbal abuse from his brothers and then slavery, false accusation and imprisonment. He could have become embittered and hateful. But he remained positive and hopeful. We are going to look into his remarkable life and see how he prevailed.
