Ep 337: Getting a Publicist to Maximize Your Outreach with Tam Lawrence
Elzie interviews PR expert Tam Lawrence to discuss the importance of understanding PR in business. Tam emphasizes the value of working with a publicist in developing a long-term strategy for an organization's brand. She suggests that business owners consult with a PR person to break down the facets of their business, understand their audience, and develop campaigns that are appropriate for their brand. Tam explains that marketing and PR go hand in hand as appropriate messaging is crucial in developing a successful marketing campaign. She also advises business owners to be clear about their demographics, including age group, income, and nationality, before working with a marketing company. Listen to this insightful mini-episode and learn about the essential role of public relations in building a strong brand and developing effective marketing campaigns. Discover the benefits of seasonal PR services and gain insight into the interrelationship between PR and marketing.Highlight:01:01 - If I look back 30 years and I said, what was the first thing that I wish I would have had? I wish I would have had an opportunity to sit down with a PR person and really just put it all on the table and get the help to really break apart all of the facets of my business so that I could be able to build a Coca Cola, build a clientele. That would be longevity, not just a short term trendy or viral campaign because traditional values are Polo, Pepsi. So if it was me and I could go back 20 years and reshape my business, I think I would start with consulting with a publicist.Ready To Go Deeper? If today’s episode resonated, don’t just move on to the next one. Ep 336: Building a Brand through Public Relations with Tam Lawrence
Elzie asks Tam Lawrence how entrepreneurs and business owners can gain earned media through public relations. Tam dives into the conversation by explaining how public relations plays a fundamental role in branding and marketing. She shares a quote from Bill Gates emphasizing the key value of this department in a company. Tam points out that many business owners overlook the public relations aspect of their business and just focus on the advertising part. She further elaborates on how public relations helps businesses project the intended message in a manner that resonates with their audience. And how they can use the same message to create newsworthy content that can be picked by reporters, thereby yielding earned media attention. Tam explains the difference between an advertisement and a protected or entrusted source. She also highlights how a publicist works to bring out the stories in businesses and ensuring that those stories become newsworthy. She states that a well-planned public relations campaign can help businesses gain earned media as opposed to paid media, which costs more. Highlight:00:56 - In public relations, we're able to help business owners really formulate a message that speaks or resonates, not just with consumers. Because when you're going into earned media, like 4, 6, 12 or 58, whoever you're going to go to, the thing is that they have to see, how does this fit for their consumer? How does it impact the end user? How does this not seem like an advertisement piece? And so a lot of times where people try to go at it themselves, it's an advertisement so they send you back the rate chart. Whereas when you're going through a publicist, you're going through a protected or entrusted source. And so we work to help reporters find stories and so if we can take that story and make it newsworthy, then it gains earned media versus having to pay for media. So I think that's the difference.Ready To Go Deeper? If today’s episode resonated, don’t just move on to the next one. The next step isn’t more content. Ep 335: Differences Between Earned, Owned, and Paid Media with Tam Lawrence
Elzie and Tam Lawrence, a Media and Public Relations expert dive into the different types of media in the business world and their relevance to business owners and entrepreneurs. Tam explains the meaning and differences between owned, paid, and earned media. Owned media refers to content generated by users based on their experience, while paid media is content that is bought or sponsored. Earned media, on the other hand, is news coverage by mainstream media. Earned media, Tam believes, is the most credible since it is backed by empirical data and supported by truth. She emphasizes that consumer trust is crucial, and earned media is the most effective way to gain it.Listen to this mini-episode to hear more about the different types of media in the business world and understand the role of each type in shaping your brand's image and messaging.Highlight:01:10 - I would always have to go with earned media because earned media gives you the accountability or the credibility that you need in order for you to get the consumer's trust. To earn the consumer's trust, earned media is always going to probably trump all the others.Ready To Go Deeper? If today’s episode resonated, don’t just move on to the next one. Ep 334: Leveraging the Power of Media with Tam Lawrence
Elzie speaks with Tam Lawrence, a comedian turned publicist and founder of Exposure Magazine. Tam shares her journey into media, which began with her passion for comedy and performing. She then leveraged her skills in communication and psychology to become a publicist for marginalized individuals, including African American NFL players who weren't receiving the media coverage they deserved. Tam founded Exposure Magazine to ensure that ordinary people doing extraordinary things had a platform. Tam's desire to further highlight the contributions and stories of African Americans was inspired by her parents' legacy as Pan Africanists and she saw the importance of archiving and sharing the stories of African Americans who have contributed to society, such as Nelson Mandela, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King Jr. Tam believes that media can be a powerful tool to combat negative depictions of African Americans by changing the narrative. Tune in to hear Tam's inspiring journey and her dedication to changing the narrative.02:22 - It's so important for our children to know who we were and the contributions in which we provided in society. And so a lot of times, we don't see that narrative written in media about African Americans. And for me, following the footsteps of my parents, my daddy always told me, choose your weapon. And so for me, this media is the choice of weapon.Ready To Go Deeper? If today’s episode resonated, don’t just move on to the next one. The next step isn’t more content. Ep 333: Tips for Making a Profit with Tashima Freeman
Tashima Freeman shares her valuable insights on how to make a profit. She and Elzie start by discussing the importance of not making assumptions about customers and understanding their business and tax processes. Tashima introduces her 15-minute strategy call as a tool to provide value to clients and not budge on her price. She also shares how niching down and focusing on the entertainment industry helped her increase her monthly earnings. Listen to hear about the importance of focusing on value by offering it before expecting returns. If you're an entrepreneur looking for ways to make a profit, this episode is a must-listen. Episode Highlights00:49 - So, it starts off just by me figuring out, "Hey, what's going on with you? What is your current accounting process and tax process now?" And from there, go into where are you trying to get things to go? And not just with your business, but like you as a whole. Where are you trying to take things? So, I can understand how to strategize for you and assist you. And truth be told, I got on those calls with no expectations to make a sale and made sales. I was booking clientele. Another thing I did, I did not budge on my price. I budged on my price two times the first year I started that business. And both of those clients were clients that I ended up having to fire and were like my worst clients. So, I did not budge on my price. That was a big thing. And then eventually, which helped me go from 7K a month to 10K and 12K a month, was me niching down. And I started to only work with people in the entertainment industry.Ready To Go Deeper? If today’s episode resonated, don’t just move on to the next one. The next step isn’t more content. Tashima's story is a testament to the power of determination, faith, and taking action. If you're looking to take your career to the next level or start your own business, this episode is a must-listen.Episode Highlights00:58 - The technique that I used in order to generate those clients so quickly - video. I posted every day, multiple times a day. I use video. I use just regular text. And at the time, for my accounting business, I was only on Facebook and Instagram. So, one thing, go to where your clients are. If you're marketing on Instagram, but your people are on LinkedIn, you're confused. So, I stuck with Facebook and Instagram because I knew that's where my people were. When I say I overdid it with video, I was doing video constantly. And I think the big thing that got people was that I was giving free game. I was providing value that you probably could have found on YouTube, but I made it more personable.Ready To Go Deeper? If today’s episode resonated, don’t just move on to the next one. If you're ready to take your career to the next level, tune in and learn how you can take action and find a coach to help you achieve your career goals.Episode Highlights00:27 - Do really good research on your coach. Don't just find a coach who's trying to make a dollar. Find a coach who is serious about helping you get to point A to point B. And if I'm being honest, I think if you are in a place where you don't know where to start, you're confused, you need clarity, don't go buy a course. You don't need a course. You need something a little more hands on. I bought basically a course, and it was a lot of work. I think the only thing that helped me was the support group that I got access to from buying that course. So, not necessarily the course, but that group, that support system. Be very picky about who you choose in the beginning as a coach.Ready To Go Deeper? If today’s episode resonated, don’t just move on to the next one. The next step isn’t more content. Ep 329: Millennial Goals vs Old School Methods with Tashima Freeman
Are millennials approaching entrepreneurship in a different way compared to the old school methods of their predecessors? Elzie and Tashima Freeman explore this topic and share their unique perspectives. Tashima, a millennial entrepreneur herself, argues that the younger generation has higher goals, and notes the ever-changing landscape of entrepreneurship. She shares how her grandmother, an older entrepreneur, remains successful by sticking with tried and tested methods. Are you curious to find out how different generations approach entrepreneurship? Hear how the different generations got their own goals, methods and tools for achieving success, not just financially, but also in terms of personal growth and fulfillment. Tune in to this episode to learn more about the different approaches to entrepreneurship and how to achieve success in the modern business world. Episode Highlights01:40 - This is not to discredit anyone who's older. Our dreams for the younger generation is just a little bit more higher. We are looking for legitimate generational wealth, and we don't just want to start it and then die and let our kids have it. We want to experience it and live through it, too. So, back then, they're like, "I'm good with making my 250 a year." Over here, we need a little bit more than 250 a year. We're like, "Okay, where's the half a mil? We're trying to get a little closer to seven figures." And once we get to 1.2 million in our business, we're like, "Okay, if we can do that, we can do more." So, I think one, the goal of what we're trying to reach in the younger generation is a lot higher, if I would say, than what some of the older generation is trying to reach.Ready To Go Deeper? If today’s episode resonated, don’t just move on to the next one. Ep 327: From Student to Six-Figure Boss with Tashima Freeman
Tashima Freeman shares her inspiring journey from a college student working in accounting to a successful six-figure boss. Two years later, she launched her own coaching business. Tune in to hear Tashima's tips on starting your own business and how she achieved success in such a short amount of time. Listen as we dive into Tashima's story and uncover her success secrets on how you, too, can climb the ladder from student to six-figure boss!Episode Highlights00:52 - It's rare to say this, but I have been working in the accounting field since before I even got my degree in it. I love accounting. It is definitely near and dear to my heart. I started doing taxes in about 2013, so I was still in college. So, I've built up a lot of experience so that I could be credible. And it's something I've done up until 2020. And when I say that, I mean corporate-wise. I was fired from my corporate job in 2020 and the next day started to make strides and motions to launch my own accounting firm, and I did. I launched KSK Tax and Accounting Solutions in March of 2020 and made my first six figures, because I was not making six figures in my corporate job. Are you struggling to make sales in your startup? Have you ever wondered why sales often take a backseat in the equation? Elzie delves into the importance of sales with guest speaker, Ron Story, a seasoned sales expert.Elzie kicks off the conversation by asking why people don't prioritize sales despite its crucial role in business success. Ron believes that CEOs should be the best salesperson in their company, as they need to transfer belief in their product. They explore different sales methodologies, such as transactional, consultative, and the Challenger sale. Ron draws parallels between the sales process and dating, stressing the importance of engagement, conversation, and listening to prospective customers. He emphasizes that the sales process should match the quality of the product to win customers, underscoring the need for alignment.Listen to their discussion on identifying areas for improvement by asking customers for feedback and implementing changes accordingly and get valuable advice from Ron as he shares his approach of doubling value without additional cost, based on customer input. Tune in now to discover the importance of exemplary performance to create long-lasting partnerships and learn strategies to level up your sales game.Episode Highlights03:09 - At the beginning, you're told you can hire someone. If you have a good idea, you can hire someone to sell it for you. But you don't realize, as the CEO, sales is a transfer of belief. So, if you, as the CEO, aren't the best salesperson in your company, nobody else is going to believe in your product because you couldn't sell them on it. So, the CEO has to be the best salesperson.06:32 - One of the simplest ones that everybody's used to is the one that we hate, transactional selling. That's when I'm just telling you, "Hey, you want to buy this? Hey, see this iPhone? It splices. It dices. It does this." That's the guy that we see on the infomercial that we don't want to be. We don't want to be Billy with the squeegee thing. We don't want to be Billy that can scrape the stuff off the frying pan to show it to people. That's more transactional selling. I have to get above it, all my information on you, in order for you to buy something from me right now. I don't care what you think. All I want you to do is to hear what I'm saying. That's transactional selling. Used car dealers, a lot of insurance agents are that way. Does that make sense?18:26 - You have to be sure that your sales process matches your product. If I'm just selling an ebook online, it should be like McDonald's, because I'm only getting $7 or $20 or something. If I'm selling a $1,000 coaching program or something like that or some type of service, it's probably not going to be Ruth's Chris. It's probably going to be something like a Chili's. It's going to be not the best sales process, but not the worst either. But if I'm telling you, you should give me $5,000 a month on a three-year contract or $20,000 a month for one-month of consulting or for a speaking gig, I'd better smell Ruth's Chris. I better get that Ruth's Chris feeling. That's the important thing. If you have those things match up, then it's easy to win because there's congruency in the sales process.21:54 - When you charge a certain amount, you should ask your customers, what would have made this better? Usually the things that would have made it better doesn't usually have a large incremental cost to you, but it's a large incremental increase in value. That's why you got to ask the questions and talk to the customer. How much more does it cost to leave some magazines telling them what to do? It don't cost nothing, but it gives you an extra start. You probably could add an extra $10 to your price for leaving the same magazines for everybody, something that tells them the best restaurants in the area and the walking distance, and stay away. The things that can add value usually don't have incremental cost a lot of times. Just by doing that process, you can find out what makes your sales process better.25:51 - Let's just double what you've been doing so that you can adjust to it. Because taking somebody who's used to doing five appointments a week to five appointments a day, they're going to be exhausted. The adrenaline dump that they will receive on that first day that they do five appointments will be like nothing they've ever experienced, and they're going to hate me. We've learned to just throttle it for them. That's the ideal situation, is we work with you on a month-to-month basis that way we have some skin in the game. Where if we don't perform, you don't want to keep working with us, but you're not obligated to stay with us for 12 months if we're not doing our job. I believe if we're doing our job, you are not going to want to get rid of us. So, that's how that works.Ready To Go Deeper? If today’s episode resonated, don’t just move on to the next one. Elzie chats with Ron Story about the benefits of long-term business partnerships. Ron shares his preference for a five-year deal to allow both parties to grow together and establish expectations. However, his business operates on a month-to-month basis due to its cyclical nature. Ron emphasizes the importance of not pushing to increase numbers drastically, instead allowing clients to adjust accordingly and avoid an adrenaline dump. Tune in to discover the advantages of committing to a long-term business partnership and how it can benefit both parties involved. Hear their perspectives on how gradual growth can be more beneficial than drastic increases in performance expectations. Ep 320: Data Collection Made Easy with Bulut Akisik
Elzie Flenard interviews Bulut Akisik, the VP of Enterprise Growth at Jotform, whose role involves growth marketing and finding new people who can benefit from the company's software as a service platform. Bulut talks about the importance of balancing family and workplace success, being honest with customers, and establishing a relationship with them. They discuss growth hacking strategies, which involves testing, data engineering, and making decisions based on realistic data. B2B founders, investors, and entrepreneurs can leverage growth marketing to get ahead of their competition. They also highlight streamlining data collection. Jotform's platform is based on the idea of using data for a specific purpose rather than just collecting it to shorten time spent collecting data and reduce manual labor. They mention the importance of digitizing data collection. Podcast hosts can use Jotform to manage their schedule by using the calendar feature and workflow capabilities to act as an assistant and it can be used by podcasters to help manage their schedules and prioritize tasks. Find out about Jotform's development roadmap and how customer feedback informs their product decisions when you tune in and listen to an engaging conversation about data collection made easy and how Jotform can help shape your business.Episode Highlights03:15 - The way I see it, the biggest value comes from, is actually the amount of budget you have. Think about, like you're against—assume that you have a startup, right? You're probably against some very big folks out there who has much bigger marketing spend, thousands of people doing something. So, you need to be smart. You need to cherish every dollar you have. You need to work around every idea that you have. You need to make sure that it actually works, and then you start investing by seeing returns.05:51 - Try to comprehend it as if that's kind of an app. Like you need to think about anything that you use, a banking application, right? You put in your credit card information, but the aim is to deposit some money. So, when you start to look at it, you understand the full image of what you're trying to achieve and then try to fill the gaps. And the next stage becomes shortening the time to collect repetitive data, eventually making you have a better day, less time spent over a computer doing manual stuff.07:57 - You have to collect data. I like to put it this way. It's like human communication, right? I mean, human communication is just collecting data and responding to something. Given any type of business that you need to do, you need to get some sort of requests from your customers and deliver them something. It could be service or a technology product or whatever. So, the best way is to collect that data. You can either talk to them on the phone or you can get them to send you emails. But once you try to categorize this data and you want to navigate within it easily, it's actually where the forms come in to play because you make people reach you with a structured data set and it makes your life much easier.11:36 - You need to keep a very heavy schedule. You need to kind of put stuff on your agenda, et cetera. That's actually for the podcast. You can just do all of them in Jotform. So, you can give your attendees, let's say, or people trying to reach out a form and that would get edited onto your calendar automatically, and you can just move them out, respond them over that calendar that we provide. It's like having your own assistant. Forms combined with workflows could actually–I don't know if you have an assistant, some people do, some doesn't–but Jotform can act like your assistant to manage all the schedule.13:25 - Family comes first. It's what I can say. Always. As a business podcast, we are all business people. There was this saying that I heard years ago. I don't even remember who told me this, but it never left me. It goes something like this. The job doesn't make the man. So, meaning that the awful hours that you have from wherever you work, your own company, or if you're being an employee somewhere, your startup, if you understand that you're working for those occasions, you actually become a more productive person in the work. Because family comes first–family, friends, et cetera.Ready To Go Deeper? If today’s episode resonated, don’t just move on to the next one. The next step isn’t more content. Ep 316: Streamline Your Data Collection with Bulut Akisik
Elzie and Bulut Akisik talk about streamlining data collection through Jotform. Bulut explains that it is based on using collected data for a specific purpose, rather than simply collecting it. He also suggests starting by driving a business process as an app to save time and reduce manual labor when it comes to data collection. Their conversation also explores the benefits of reducing the time spent collecting data and the need to eliminate manual labor. If you're looking to streamline your data collection process, this episode is a must-listen. Discover how Jotform's platform can help your business grow. Listen to the thought-provoking discussion that offers valuable insights into how businesses can optimize their processes through streamlined data collection.Episode Highlights01:51 - Try to comprehend it as if that's kind of an app. Like you need to think about anything that you use, a banking application, right? You put in your credit card information, but the aim is to deposit some money. So, when you start to look at it, you understand the full image of what you're trying to achieve and then try to fill the gaps. And the next stage becomes shortening the time to collect repetitive data, eventually making you have a better day, less time spent over a computer doing manual stuff.Ready To Go Deeper? If today’s episode resonated, don’t just move on to the next one. Ep 315: Get Ahead with Growth Hacking Strategies with Bulut Akisik
If you are a B2B founder, investor, or entrepreneur looking to get ahead of the competition and leverage modern strategies for growth marketing, then this episode is for you! Growth marketing is the more modern version of traditional marketing, and it involves testing, data engineering, and making decisions based on realistic data. When resources are limited, entrepreneurs should be smart with how they utilize their budget and make sure they see returns before investing more money into an idea. For example, when selling T-shirts, one should experiment with different marketing strategies online and pour money into the ones that show the most success. Elzie and Bulut Akisik explore how to experiment with different marketing strategies online and allocate funding towards the ones that yield positive results. Tune in to learn how they benefit your business and gain insight into what makes a successful growth strategy in today's market.Episode Highlights01:19 - The way I see it, the biggest value comes from, is actually the amount of budget you have. Think about, like you're against—assume that you have a startup, right? You're probably against some very big folks out there who has much bigger marketing spend, thousands of people doing something. So, you need to be smart. You need to cherish every dollar you have. You need to work around every idea that you have. You need to make sure that it actually works, and then you start investing by seeing returns.Ready To Go Deeper? If today’s episode resonated, don’t just move on to the next one. Ep 314: Revolutionizing Education Through Immersive Experiences with David Scurlock
Are you interested in learning about how virtual, augmented and extended reality technology can help to make education and training more exciting, effective, and fun? David Scurlock, the founder of In Your Face Learning, speaks with Elzie about revolutionizing education and workforce development using these emerging technologies. David shares how he uses Oculus headsets and other devices to provide immersive experiences for students through virtual field trips and simulations. They discuss the potential for using these technologies in business, including virtual tours and client presentations. They also explore the world of Metaverse and its implications for safety and security. Discover resources for learning about immersive technology and how companies and educational institutions are using it for training and design when you tune in to this episode. Learn more about the exciting world of immersive experiences and their impact on education and business. Let's dive into a world of revolutionary possibilities with David Scurlock!Episode Higlights11:25 - Now, because the form factors are becoming more streamlined, the technology is becoming more user-friendly. It can now be used for education. Taking a virtual field trip, for example, that allows the students that I've worked with, have never left the environment that they're in. But we put them in the headset, they can take a virtual tour of the White House hosted by Barack and Michelle Obama. I'll be working with a school in Glendale. They're studying space exploration right now. We put them in the headset and they're virtually in the International Space Station and they can experience what weightlessness is. So, that's in essence what I've decided to do is take those kinds of applications, use either virtual reality or augmented reality as a tool and go into schools all the way up into adult learners.17:41 - You could do a digital twin of Podcast Town. So, in other words, it sounds like maybe you've done some of that where you've taken the 360 videos, and now somebody has the headset, they can put on the headset, and just like we're having this conversation, you can walk them right through this studio, and they can actually see the studio. I'll use Direct Supply as an example. They were using it initially for design and development, and architects will design the building. They've designed some of the stages at Summerfest, for example, the architect firms. And before they put the first stake in the ground or paint the walls or move it, bring the client in, let them see it, and actually walk through virtually what that space looks like.28:18 - That thing that looks like the goggles on my head, when I say very quickly, over time, the form factor is going to get lighter. Think of snowmobile glasses or there are some out that surgeons use and they've been using in the military that literally almost look like glasses. And then the other aspect is that as the technology already evolves, and even the Meta Quest 2 now, you don't have to use the controllers. Your hands are actually what you're doing. So, for example, you'll have someone, and they're saying eventually, the screens will go away. You can put on the glasses and I can have a spreadsheet here, I can have all of my screens here and I can fill up the room.39:58 - Then they found out that some of the seniors that were in there and in their studies that are showing this, that they get in the headset for a short time and it can help Alzheimer's, because, all of a sudden, I can go back to Italy. I can walk in the streets of where I grew up, so there's a lot of cases out there that, as a business owner, you can look at and see what they're doing and then start to develop it on your own. And there are now schools, Milwaukee School of Engineering, UW Parkside is going to start doing it, where there are courses where you go in and you have someone design the studio for you or help you in that content creation. And it's just going to become easier, more user-friendly.Ready To Go Deeper? If today’s episode resonated, don’t just move on to the next one. The next step isn’t more content. Ep 309: Writing Your Way To The Top from Scratch to Success with Rick Elmore
Our special guest in this episode is Rick Elmore, who shares his incredible journey of going from scratch to success. Rick started out as an athlete and medical device salesperson with no business experience, but he was determined to make it work and develop a winning strategy. With hard work, grit, discipline and passion from his background in sports, he was able to stand out in the corporate world. He also used two useful analogies - climbing a mountain and Dave Ramsey's debt repayment analogy - to illustrate how he achieved success.Rick then talks about turning challenges into opportunities through technology. He was able to build a handwriting robot after finding help from knowledgeable people and testing out potential solutions. Rick also explains how he built a strong team by being flexible, having empathy and offering understanding. This episode is packed with wisdom that will certainly inspire any budding entrepreneur or anyone hoping to take their business career to the next level. Tune in now to hear Rick's story!Episode Highlights01:57 - I wouldn't say that I found Simply Noted. I felt like Simply Noted found me. I was in a marketing class and I had a professor going over the success rates in marketing and everything was super nominal, email, cold call, all the normal stuff. And then he ended the lecture saying, "Handwritten notes have a 99% open rate." I just thought that was such a believable stat because who doesn't open a handwritten note? So, I just thought it was a good business idea. There's a lot more in between and there's a lot more that came after, but that was really like the idea where the seed was planted. Handwritten notes can be a really good business idea if there's a cool, easy way to do it.04:40 - You got to be doing something you're passionate about, and I know that's kind of like the same advice everybody gives you. But that's why it was really easy for me to keep kind of pushing in those hard times. To develop that grit or to develop that discipline, you just got to wake up and do things, like even if you don't want to do it that day. You can start off by doing something simple, as easy as just making your bed every single morning and just not negotiating with yourself. You wake up and just do it. Even if you don't feel like it, you're doing a small win to start the day. 12:03 - There's a lot of free knowledge online, like how to book a meeting, how to run a meeting. Go to Google. Go to YouTube. I call myself relentless in the pursuit of knowledge. I come home and talk to my wife about something that I learned today and exhaust her. She's like, "You, literally, this is all you do, just trying to figure stuff out," but it's exciting. As you learn, like your tunnel vision goes from what you know, to what all the possibilities are. And when that picture becomes so clear, you get really excited and it builds more energy. So, it really just comes from effort. It comes from consistency. It comes from talking to people. It comes from being helpful. If you show people that you're interested in them and you want to help them, they're going to give you their time and attention to help you.16:29 - A Phase 0 is basically you tell them your idea. You show them what you're trying to do. They dig into it, research it, build you a plan, and give you a quote. I did that 14 times and we spent over $800,000 on this. I knew this project was going to be big. We have no loans, no debt, no investors. This is all customer-funded, so it's like we could not afford to miss. So, I went through that process 14 times. Again, I have a sales and athletic background. I was afraid to make the wrong decision.22:04 - What's really important about being a leader is showing that you care and actually showing that you care, taking the time to ask questions, be flexible, to be understanding, and show interest. A lot of the same things that help you to be successful in sales, it's the same thing about being a leader. But the ultimate thing is really being empathetic. You're going to want things to be done on your timeline, especially when a lot of that pressure is mounting, but you just got to be understanding, be empathetic, understand things will happen as they happen, and really just try to keep people together. Because at the end of the day without everybody here, we couldn't do this. So, it's like I owe the success to everybody who's helped build this.Ready To Go Deeper? If today’s episode resonated, don’t just move on to the next one. The next step isn’t more content. Ep 308: Building a Strong Team through Flexibility with Rick Elmore
Rick Elmore reveals his secrets to creating a strong and successful business team. He explains that flexibility is key. Asking questions, showing interest in others' jobs, and having empathy are also important values he emphasizes for effective entrepreneurship. He shares his experience in sales and sports and how it influenced his leadership style. He emphasizes the importance of building a close-knit team and treating them like family. He also dives deep into the role of empathy in leadership and how it helps to keep the team together.Rick believes that treating your team like employees will not work in the long run. Instead, it is essential to create an environment where everyone feels comfortable and the door is always open. Tune in to an episode that provides valuable insights for anyone looking to build a strong team and lead with empathy.Episode Highlights01:21 - What's really important about being a leader is showing that you care and actually showing that you care, taking the time to ask questions, be flexible, to be understanding, and show interest. I was afraid to make the wrong decision.Ready To Go Deeper? If today’s episode resonated, don’t just move on to the next one. Ep 306: Climbing the Mountain of Success with Rick Elmore
Rick Elmore shares his insights on climbing the mountain of success as an entrepreneur. He uses two analogies, one about a mountain-climbing journey and another from Dave Ramsey's debt-repayment approach, to explain how he achieved business success. With limited resources coming from a lower-middle class family, Rick found success by asking questions, talking to successful people in the same field, and staying passionate about writing and business. He advises listeners to keep asking questions and to talk to people who have done what they want to do. He encourages consistency, hard work, and focusing on small wins to build momentum towards larger goals. To help listeners achieve their own goals, he recommends being helpful to those around them while having fun grinding towards their aspirations. Tune in to hear why you need to develop enthusiasm for what you are doing and keep that fire burning in order to reach your entrepreneurial goals. You will enjoy this episode for its actionable advice on how to overcome business obstacles and achieve success.Episode Highlights04:40 - There's a lot of free knowledge online, like how to book a meeting, how to run a meeting. If you show people that you're interested in them and you want to help them, they're going to give you their time and attention to help you.Ready To Go Deeper? If today’s episode resonated, don’t just move on to the next one. Rick shares how these traits have helped him in entrepreneurship, setting him apart from others in the corporate world. Tune in now for a rich conversation with Rick Elmore highlighting the importance of having a strong work ethic, being passionate about what you do, and constantly pushing yourself out of your comfort zone to grow and succeed in life.Episode Highlights02:24 - You got to be doing something you're passionate about, and I know that's kind of like the same advice everybody gives you. But that's why it was really easy for me to keep kind of pushing in those hard times. To develop that grit or to develop that discipline, you just got to wake up and do things, like even if you don't want to do it that day. His journey and insights offer valuable lessons and inspiration for anyone seeking to build a successful and fulfilling business. Tune in now and learn how a simple idea can lead to a successful business venture.Episode Highlights01:17 - I wouldn't say that I found Simply Noted. Handwritten notes can be a really good business idea if there's a cool, easy way to do it.Ready To Go Deeper? If today’s episode resonated, don’t just move on to the next one. Ep 303: Selling Smarter, Not Harder: A Strategic Approach for Entrepreneurs with Liz Heiman
Are you an entrepreneur struggling to grow your startup or established company? This episode is for you. Elzie talks to Liz Heiman, a sales consultant and expert in startup growth. Liz shares her knowledge of building a successful sales team, establishing a culture of sales within your company, and managing your sales funnel effectively. She emphasizes the importance of creating a mission, vision, and values-driven plan, conducting strategic planning sessions, and hiring people who fit those values.Liz explains the significance of having a Sales Operating System that includes strategy, lead generation, sales process, key account management, and team management. She offers valuable advice on managing a sales funnel and building relationships with customers based on trust. She also suggests that salespeople start with a simple CRM and advises looking into tools that can help put the sales process together, simplify it, and move sales forward. Don't miss out on this opportunity to learn from Liz's expertise and take your sales game to the next level. Tune in now and discover how you can achieve sustainable growth through effective sales strategies.Episode Highlights05:37 - Your sales team is the heart of your business. And everybody says, "Oh, no, no, my product is the heart of my business." Well, it may be the soul of your business, but it is not the heart, because it is the sales team that pumps the lifeblood through your organization and keeps it going. Because without that heart pumping, there's no company. And if you think about it, your heart isn't in your pinky. Because if it were in your pinky, it couldn't pump life blood through your body. It's in the center of your body for a reason, because it needs to be there. And your sales team is the center of your business, because it's all about the customer. And your sales team is the first team that really touches your customer directly. Marketing may influence them, but the sales team touches them.16:19 - In sales, there are a whole bunch of companies that have created methodologies, and you may have heard of some of them. Sandler is one of them. The Challenger Sale is one of them. There's a new one called MEDDIC. I don't know how new it is, but that's kind of a methodology. I come out of the world of Miller Heiman. So, Miller Heiman created programs called Strategic Selling, Conceptual Selling, and Large Account Management. And that was really the early days of creating methodology or process around sales. So, Solution Selling was also happening at the same time and SPIN Selling was also created about the same time. These are also methodologies. And these are the very beginning of "Hey, there's a process that you follow to do this." 20:43 - This is going to be really shocking to everyone, I know, but leads do not come out of thin air. They are not like combustion from nothing. They actually have to come from somewhere. So, either your marketing team has to generate them or your sales team has to go out to events, or you have to call people. Somewhere, these leads–and you need a plan. You need a strategy. What activities are we going to do, and what results do we need in order to pay for those activities? So, there's a strategy.28:14 - Yes, it has to be a good fit. Yes, it has to be the right solution. But people matter. People always matter. And I have customers that they have a two or three year sales cycle, that relationship matters over that time. And if you let that relationship go and don't pay attention to it, somebody else is going to go make a relationship and when it's time to make the decision, somebody else is going to be in there. So yes, it matters. You matter as an owner, as a salesperson, anybody, you matter. How people feel about you matters. You need to be kind and curious and compassionate and all of those things. It matters.31:55 - If you don't put stuff in the top of the funnel, there's not going to be anything to come out in six months. So if I am tracking my leads, my opportunities, or my deals, either in a spreadsheet or in my CRM, then I ought to be able to look at it and go, yep, I need 20 things to come out the bottom. I got 200 things in the top of the funnel and I'm moving them through slowly. And I know this one's going to close in six months and this one's going to close in nine months and that one's going to close in twelve months. Right. So that we're actually mapping their journey through our sales process or through our funnel as they're making buying decisions. So that's what I would teach you, and I would teach you to set process up based on stages, not activities.Ready To Go Deeper? If today’s episode resonated, don’t just move on to the next one. Ep 302: Taking Control of Your Funnel with Liz Heiman
Liz Heiman explains that the sales funnel is shaped like a funnel for a reason because there are many more conversations and prospects at the top of the funnel than there are at the bottom. The goal is to have leads fall out of the funnel, so you can focus on the leads that matter. She discusses the priorities of managing a sales funnel, such as closing ready-to-buy clients first, prospecting for new leads, qualifying new leads, and developing solutions.Liz advises tracking leads, opportunities or deals in a CRM or spreadsheet, and mapping the sales process to the buying process, rather than following a fixed process based on stages. By doing so, salespeople can stay focused on the right priorities and effectively manage their sales funnel. She recommends using Gardner's infographic on the real sales process to understand how the buying process works. This episode is a must listen if you are looking to build an effective sales strategy and sales funnel that keeps your sales team busy. If you're an entrepreneur looking to fill your calendar with more sales meetings & close more leads, you won't want to miss this.Episode Highlights03:22 - If you don't put stuff in the top of the funnel, there's not going to be anything to come out in six months. Ep 301: Setting the Foundation for Successful Relationships with Liz Heiman
There's a prevailing trend in the world of sales that claims relationship selling is dead. Some argue that customers are already 67% through the sales process before even talking to a salesperson, rendering relationships irrelevant. However, Liz Heiman disagrees. In complex business-to-business sales or even personal sales, relationship is everything. If a customer is making a big investment that will impact their organization, they need to trust the people selling to them. People still buy from people they trust. If a salesperson is not trustworthy, customers will look elsewhere.Although the way people research and make purchasing decisions has changed, relationships still matter. People do a tremendous amount of research before talking to a salesperson, but if a salesperson gets to them before they start doing the research and helps them understand the solution, they will trust the salesperson in making the decision.A good fit and the right solution are still crucial, but people always matter. Liz highlights that if a salesperson doesn't pay attention to the relationship, somebody else will, and when it's time to make the decision, someone else will be there. Relationships are not dead in sales, but they have changed. It's important to be kind, curious, and compassionate, and to hire trustworthy salespeople. Relationships matter, and how people feel about you matters. Don't let the relationship go unnoticed, or someone else will take advantage of it.Episode Highlights01:46 - Yes, it has to be a good fit. Tune in for an enlightening conversation and valuable insights into becoming an effective 10-hour entrepreneur!Episode Highlights:08:06 - An alcoholic cannot overcome alcoholism until he or she realizes or is aware that they have a problem with alcohol. Someone addicted to porn, someone addicted to overeating, whatever the addictions or problems in life, you can't overcome it until you're aware of it. So, for me, I've always had pretty good self-awareness, probably to my detriment at times, because I'm overly analyzing what people may think. As a matter of fact, I was talking with one of my best friends this morning. We meet every week for coffee and we're working through the Think and Grow Rich Workbook right now, which by the way, I'd highly recommend everybody to go through. He's a mindset coach. And so, we were going through that today. And one of the things that we read through in the workbook this week was a failure inventory and going through things where you could potentially fail if you don't keep it in check.12:16 - There's always pain in change. It may not be immense pain, but there's some pain in change. I mean, I'm right-handed and brush my teeth on the right hand everyday. But if for some reason my right hand is not available and hurt and I have to brush with my left, that change is painful, and can be because I might hit my gums, or anytime we change, there's pain in it. But when the pain of staying the same outweighs the pain of change, that's when change occurs.23:05 - Well, I think it's just minimizing at the base level. It's just getting your open cycles down to a manageable thing. And then once you realize and understand what causes stress is open cycles, if you start feeling stressed, you know what it's related to and you can do a quick open cycles inventory. Certainly, it doesn't take three hours once you know what you're doing. Because you can go, "What is on my list I need to take care of?" I mean, I've got my date, my planner, right here on the desk next to me, and in this planner, there's a list of 10 or 12 things that I need to get done this week. That's all I do. I just get that one done. Done! Move on to the next one. That's how I manage it.25:16 - There's this thing I refer to as "Hero Syndrome," and the hero syndrome affects every entrepreneur. Nobody escapes it. And at the beginning, what the hero syndrome does, it teaches us that we are the hero and if it's going to survive, we must save it. So, the business is on our shoulders, we fly from town to town, we save the crying babies, we save the damsels in distress, we put out the fires, we do everything. We're the hero, we wear the cape, we wear it proudly. And that is fine in the first stages of any startup, of any business. The problem is that's not sustainable, long term.Ready To Go Deeper? If today’s episode resonated, don’t just move on to the next one. The next step isn’t more content. It can be hard to find the answer to the question of what truly matters when it comes to our own personal happiness. Understanding ourselves, discovering our true self-awareness, may be at the heart of achieving that ecstatic, sustainable joy we all strive for. Jason Duncan emphasizes the essence for entrepreneurs to figure out how to get out of the daily operations so they can find what makes them joyful, passionate, and purposeful in their lives. Self-awareness and synthetic happiness are intriguing concepts but can be difficult to understand. To uncover the complexities of these ideas, it is helpful to reflect on our own feelings first and the feelings of those around us. By asking questions about our experiences, we can begin to discern between the moments that bring authentic happiness and the moments of synthetic joy. Listen to Jason to better understand self-awareness and its importance in creating genuine contentment in our lives.Episode Highlights00:39 - An alcoholic cannot overcome alcoholism until he or she realizes or is aware that they have a problem with alcohol. He also shares ideas about mindset, motivation, and massive action when it comes to clients. They then talk about Black Executive Men, which offers solutions by meeting people where they are at while providing money, respect, influence, and impact through unlocking extreme competence and tapping into unlimited job leads with support networks available throughout life.Learn about the fears that many entrepreneurs face and how resourcefulness can help in finding solutions to challenges when you tune in to this episode. Discover how Jewel and his team strive to create a culture of nepotism in a positive way where people can play the game of winning through networks. With practical tips and strategies, this episode provides a roadmap for Black men looking to succeed in the corporate world.Episode Highlights10:42 - We focus specifically on Black men, so I can't necessarily speak for everybody because culturally that might be a little bit different for different communities and different demographics. So, we can get to the ways that it could and should possibly get done, but it comes down to promotions. It comes down to raises. That's what's going on in Corporate America. It's competitive and people are there to make money. I can say period for impact or like, in effect, or dramatic effect. But on one sense of the scale, it's period. That's why people are there. That's the game. That's why the corporation literally exists. Whatever they're selling is secondary. They're there to make a profit. Shareholders know it. Everybody knows it.16:03 - A job is only a part. It's about a third of your career strategy. It's only a piece of the puzzle and that's table stakes. It's baseline. You have to do your job well to advance. So, that's across the board. Unless you really got a strong nepotism and a strong network going, you can get to all kinds of places unmerited. It happens all the time. So, don't think that you have to be doing this great job to get an advance. You don't. To be plugged into networks is the most powerful way to get ahead, career-wise.24:33 - To have a coach, to have a psychotherapist or psychologist, to have a process of reflection, where you can really – for some guys, that's journaling. For some guys, it's prayer, etc. For some guys, it's sitting by the ocean or being in nature. Whatever it is that can help you see what's going inside of your own mind with some more clarity and, ultimately, find some resolution or a solution to it, it's going to be an essential part of your growth as an entrepreneur. You are going to be growing. You are a reflection of your business and where it's at. And so, if you want your business to grow, you will have to grow internally. Your identity will actually have to shift to allow you to unlock higher levels of business success as well. 27:35 - So, it's about marketing, and this is what took me years to create. It is so simple now. It's Black Executive Men. Oh, of course. That's easy. I could have thought of that. You could have – we all could have. Of course, that's what you would call it. It's an easy name to come up with. It's not the name that's difficult. It's three words. It's the concept behind it, and it's a framework that allows our clientele to say, "That's for me." Black Executive Men is an aspirational identity. It's what our guys want to achieve. It says nothing about trauma. It says nothing about therapy. It says nothing about coaching even, although you can make a tie, executive-executive coaching, but it doesn't say anything about needing any kind of help. It says full empowerment as a business class, as a Black man in Corporate America. Ready To Go Deeper? If today’s episode resonated, don’t just move on to the next one.
