That tune inspired the CD of the same name. The last CD, in fact, of Jed Marum. I was saddened last week when I learned that Jed passed away on May 2. He was 66 years old. Jed's music has been a big part of this podcast. He first showed up in show #13. But he quickly became an essential part of the show. He even allowed me to share some of his CDs, in their entirety, on the podcast. #42 featured Lonestar Stout. #91 featured Soul of a Wanderer. My first big experience with Jed Marum was at the Texas Scottish Festival in 2011. I shared a stage with him and Hugh Morrison other musicians. I'm not a super outgoing guy. But Jed approached me and made me feel like he did with everyone, like one of the family. He was kind and generous person. So today, I'm gonna highlight his music. I'll share of the music of others as well. But it's mostly about Jed. His passing is a great loss to the Celtic community. I want to celebrate his life with music. He asked if I was paying royalties to the artists whose music I was using. One of the tragedies of creating this podcast is that I cannot afford to pay artists for play in the show. I calculated that it would cost over $20,000 per episode if I was to pay the standard royalty rate. Instead, I ask artists to permit me to use their music royalty-free. But I feel bad about just doing that. So years ago, I started donating a portion of the income I earn from compilation CDs and from Patreon to Celtic non-profits, to help support our Celtic community. I just compiled the list of 2017 donations. We donated a total of $3885.57 that went to Celtic non-profits last year. That means we have donated a grand total of over $31,000 to Celtic non-profits since I started donating money in 2004. You can see a breakdown of the Celtic non-profit donations on the website. I got an email from Iona last week. They said they are about to release final CD. The band is not breaking up, but the changing music industry is forcing them to change how they release music, or in their case, stop releasing it. This is a good time to point out that if you enjoy the music of bands in this podcast, there are several important things you can to do. If you still buy CDs, buy one from one of these bands. If not, buy downloads or band merchandise. Or if you're streaming music (outside of this podcast, of course), then follow the bands on Spotify or whatever streaming website they prefer. Finally, I'm planning to do more Spotify promotions. So if you have any Celtic music playlists on Spotify, I'd love to hear from you. Drop me an email. Special thanks to our newest Patrons of the Podcast: Sean Mac Aodha, Kas, and our new Celtic Superstar, Hunter Melville. Years ago, a traditional Irish musician sat me down and told this autoharp-playing Renaissance festival musician what Celtic music really was. He gave me a list of popular trad musicians I should listen to. And I found some awesome bands in his list. That meeting was an important moment in my life. Because I did not see Celtic music the way he did. His definition narrowly defined traditional Irish music. For me, Celtic music is vast and growing. It encompasses the traditional songs and tunes as well as the contemporary arrangements that are more accessible to the average listener, like Celtic rock and even Celtic New Age. So when I started the Celtic Music Magazine and later the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. One of my goals was to share my definition of Celtic music as well as to help independent Celtic musicians. So this week I'm gonna share songs and tunes that I think will be a great intro to someone getting started with Celtic music. I picked some of my favorite bands and tunes. I got a little of input as well from my Patrons of the Podcast. Without my Patrons support this show would not have happened. This is in fact the first of two 2-hour shows that you get because we hit a big milestone on Patreon. Paul Vosteen emailed from West Virginia: "Marc - ok, that's a little informal, Mr. Gunn, My wife and I volunteer at a local community radio station here in Pocahontas County (WV). We're three shows in to a Celtic radio show that we call "Celtic Highways and Byways" and I'm writing to ask your sage advice on obtaining new music. We're operating on pretty much a zero budget (volunteer DJs, public/community radio, etc.) and the current library of Celtic music at the station is rather old - there was a show that ended about 6 yrs back, so the 'newest' stuff in the collection is circa 2009. We do have a few CDs of our own that we tap into, but finding new music is our goal. One of the areas we are trying to focus on is reinforcing the connections between the music of the Celts and music in the Appalachias. We've made some inroads into this, but we're kinda newbies (although I have played Celtic music for a number of years - whistle and flute). ANY insights you may have are appreciated. We subscribe to your podcast, and enjoy it greatly - I generally listen while I am at work, while my wife plays it loud all about the house. :-)" Thank you Paul. First, Marc is fine. I usually experience I drop in patronage at this time of year, and that's with the increased production of shows that often come for free during the Christmas holidays. I would greatly appreciate it if you would become a patron of the podcast. Whenever we hit a milestone, I bring you a two-hour special. We are $31 away from the next milestone. If we reach that goal before the end of October, you will not only get a 2-hour Celtic Rock special, but you'll also get a second 2-hour special of music that will get you as well as newbies hooked on Celtic music. Will you help us reach that goal? Please sign up today at http://patreon.com/celticpodcast * I WANT YOUR FEEDBACK: What are you doing today while listening to the podcast? I especially love Celtic rock and you have a special hour just on that with bands I'm mostly unfamiliar with! Ed Miller used to host a Celtic segment on Austin's NPR station, but he NEVER played anything with bagpipes. I have a theory that Ed Miller doesn't like the bagpipes. But you, Marc, you aren't afraid of anything!" You're very welcome Robert. That's one of the many things I love about this podcast. The diversity. That is what truly makes America great. A few years ago, I published my CD How America Saved Irish Music (listen to show #169). The main part of the story is that the Irish diaspora preserved traditional Irish music, which made it's way back to Ireland. But the other aspect is that we are melting pot of different cultures. And all of those influences end up in contemporary Irish & Celtic music, whether you're talking about rock'n'roll, R&B, jazz, country, bluegrass, hip hop, electronica. And it's brilliant. The traditional culture is important but so are the changes that affect the music every day. Without it, I would be playing the same 12 bands over and over again. As for Ed Miller, I love that theory. And I have a few vague memories of him cracking jokes about bagpipes which may confirm your hypothesis. If you're like Ed Miller or just like Ed Miller's music, he has a radio program called Across the Pond. It comes out on Sundays from 6-8 PM on Sunradio in Austin. And I *think* you can listen to it online. The Irish & Celtic Music Podcast exists on the generosity of our Patrons of the Podcast. One of those is Temple Records. That's the label of Battlefield Band. In addition to releasing music by Battlefield Band, the label also helps small artists who are doing great things for Scottish music. Like Christine Primrose. About the time I was finishing up the 2-hour Scottish Music show, episode #317, Temple Records sent me music from Christine Primrose. She sings in Scots Gaelic I thought she'd be a great addition to the show. I asked if they had any other music. But I didn't receive anything until the day after I published the show. Tony Becket setup this website "to restore awareness, celebrate and preserve the culture and history of Celtic Americans by promoting live Celtic music, festivals, history & ancestry." He's working primarily with Northern California Celtic performers. And he has a YouTube channel which could use your love. Celtic music and culture is a relatively small community. I mean, if all of the Scottish, Irish, and Welsh ancestry people united, we'd have one heck of a cultural impact. Instead, it's limited mostly to St. Patrick's Day. That's a shame. So I'd like to ask your help of spreading the word about AmeriCeltic. And I'd also encourage you to start your own local Celtic community. I've been listening to your podcast for a few years now, and have always loved discovering new bands and artists every week. Last night, I had the wonderful opportunity to go see a show by a band called the Recollective, a fairly new Celtic group. I wasn't sure if you'd heard of them, but if not, you should definitely check them out!! They played an outstanding concert, and they were all very lovely people. Thanks so much for all your hard work in creating your awesome show! Cheers" Hank Woodward emailed: "Hi Marc, Just want to pass along another huge thank you for all you do in bringing us wonderful music through the Irish & Celtic Music podcast. Also wanted to relate a great musical experience I got to share with my son Jackson (rising 9th grade violist) about a month ago. We got to see Mithril perform with the local Johnson City (TN) Symphony Orchestra. I got to talk a bit with the fiddler, Tom Morely, and let him know that I first heard their music on the Irish & Celtic Music podcast. The performance was doubly special to us, as three of the performers in the orchestra we know personally through the music school (Suzuki Talent Education of Appalachia), where my son and I take our viola lessons. Thanks again for continuing to bring us all the fantastic music on the Irish & Celtic Music podcast. One of the coolest things about the trip for me was learning more about the Celts before they settled in seven Celtic nations. I emailed my Celtic Invasion Vacations subscribers telling them I was considering adding another Invasion to Venice. One person responded saying it made no sense. Because what does Venice have to do with the Celts. The answer is a lot more than you would think. In fact, we learned in Brittany that one of the main Celtic tribes to settle the area near Vannes were the Veneti. If you follow the place names of where the Celts settled, one area was the Veneto. My step-dad is from Padova in the Veneto. Ever since I started playing Celtic music, he's experienced the Celtic influence in the Veneto which settled the region in the 9th and 10th century B.C. By the 3rd century b.c. they had migrated to Brittany in France. There's even a Po River in Carnac. The Po River is one of the main rivers in the Veneto. The list goes on and on. I'll try and do an episode of The Celtfather podcast with more details. Needless to say, it was a fascinating glimpse of history. It's amazing to realize Celtic culture can be found throughout Europe. If you want to experience more of the trip, I recorded a bunch of videos and set them to my music.
