That tune inspired the CD of the same name. The last CD, in fact, of Jed Marum. I was saddened last week when I learned that Jed passed away on May 2. He was 66 years old. Jed's music has been a big part of this podcast. He first showed up in show #13. But he quickly became an essential part of the show. He even allowed me to share some of his CDs, in their entirety, on the podcast. #42 featured Lonestar Stout. #91 featured Soul of a Wanderer. My first big experience with Jed Marum was at the Texas Scottish Festival in 2011. I shared a stage with him and Hugh Morrison other musicians. I'm not a super outgoing guy. But Jed approached me and made me feel like he did with everyone, like one of the family. He was kind and generous person. So today, I'm gonna highlight his music. I'll share of the music of others as well. But it's mostly about Jed. His passing is a great loss to the Celtic community. I want to celebrate his life with music. This simple easy list will do a lot to help your favorite bands get noticed. Someone made an angry comment on Facebook the other day. He asked if I was paying royalties to the artists whose music I was using. One of the tragedies of creating this podcast is that I cannot afford to pay artists for play in the show. I calculated that it would cost over $20,000 per episode if I was to pay the standard royalty rate. Instead, I ask artists to permit me to use their music royalty-free. But I feel bad about just doing that. So years ago, I started donating a portion of the income I earn from compilation CDs and from Patreon to Celtic non-profits, to help support our Celtic community. I just compiled the list of 2017 donations. We donated a total of $3885.57 that went to Celtic non-profits last year. That means we have donated a grand total of over $31,000 to Celtic non-profits since I started donating money in 2004. You can see a breakdown of the Celtic non-profit donations on the website. Years ago, a traditional Irish musician sat me down and told this autoharp-playing Renaissance festival musician what Celtic music really was. He gave me a list of popular trad musicians I should listen to. And I found some awesome bands in his list. That meeting was an important moment in my life. Because I did not see Celtic music the way he did. His definition narrowly defined traditional Irish music. For me, Celtic music is vast and growing. It encompasses the traditional songs and tunes as well as the contemporary arrangements that are more accessible to the average listener, like Celtic rock and even Celtic New Age. So when I started the Celtic Music Magazine and later the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. One of my goals was to share my definition of Celtic music as well as to help independent Celtic musicians. So this week I'm gonna share songs and tunes that I think will be a great intro to someone getting started with Celtic music. I picked some of my favorite bands and tunes. We're three shows in to a Celtic radio show that we call "Celtic Highways and Byways" and I'm writing to ask your sage advice on obtaining new music. We're operating on pretty much a zero budget (volunteer DJs, public/community radio, etc.) and the current library of Celtic music at the station is rather old - there was a show that ended about 6 yrs back, so the 'newest' stuff in the collection is circa 2009. We do have a few CDs of our own that we tap into, but finding new music is our goal. One of the areas we are trying to focus on is reinforcing the connections between the music of the Celts and music in the Appalachias. A few years ago, I published my CD How America Saved Irish Music (listen to show #169). The main part of the story is that the Irish diaspora preserved traditional Irish music, which made it's way back to Ireland. But the other aspect is that we are melting pot of different cultures. And all of those influences end up in contemporary Irish & Celtic music, whether you're talking about rock'n'roll, R&B, jazz, country, bluegrass, hip hop, electronica. And it's brilliant. The traditional culture is important but so are the changes that affect the music every day. Without it, I would be playing the same 12 bands over and over again. As for Ed Miller, I love that theory. And I have a few vague memories of him cracking jokes about bagpipes which may confirm your hypothesis. One of the coolest things about the trip for me was learning more about the Celts before they settled in seven Celtic nations. I emailed my Celtic Invasion Vacations subscribers telling them I was considering adding another Invasion to Venice. One person responded saying it made no sense. Because what does Venice have to do with the Celts. The answer is a lot more than you would think. In fact, we learned in Brittany that one of the main Celtic tribes to settle the area near Vannes were the Veneti. If you follow the place names of where the Celts settled, one area was the Veneto. My step-dad is from Padova in the Veneto. Ever since I started playing Celtic music, he's experienced the Celtic influence in the Veneto which settled the region in the 9th and 10th century B.C. By the 3rd century b.c. they had migrated to Brittany in France. There's even a Po River in Carnac. The Po River is one of the main rivers in the Veneto. The list goes on and on. I'll try and do an episode of The Celtfather podcast with more details. Needless to say, it was a fascinating glimpse of history.
