Often don’t see our own talents and abilities Ask your best friends “what are my free greatest gifts?” Having a magical space where negativity doesn’t exist. Scrubbing away the negativity Changing your mind Loving your body Removing your baggage Raising your soulmate potential – the mindsets to give you the greatest potential to find and maintain a really incredible potential One very practical thing you can do, look at the expectations you have and see how many are valid and how many can you do without. The more you can do without the more likely you’ll be able to connect with someone on a soul level. Letting go of all the superficial stuff that gets in the way Law of attraction The most powerful way is to get the feeling and the energy and let go of the particulars of what that looks like. The universe knows better than you…let go of the limiting beliefs and need to control and trust the universe. Don’t be limited by your list Mali would have never have found Joe Have an energetic feeling and let the rest go. Staying in a place of gratitude – they’re just temporary, they’re just a guest. Staying in touch with the fact of how short our lives are, but helps us stay in touch with the gratitude Having a guest card, like a get-out-of-jail card. What is true commitment? Not a fearful or manipulative thing. Most people’s commitment is coming from a place of fear Should be commitment made out of love Do you need to keep repeating a commitment to love to yourself – staying mindful Is awareness of the great relationship and wanting it to continue “Context” an idea of what you have to offer to the relationship Idea of what I have to offer rather than what you have to give Why jealousy can be a good thing! A very juicy, alive feeling. Often attracted to other people, how you deal with that is what’s most important She wants him to be attracted to other people, keeps him feeling alive Free to be yourself Why innocent flirtation can be healthy Playful I see you, you see me How to move past resentments Making positive changes allows you to attract the person in your life Do internal work before you’re ready to attract someone The partner game of “leapfrog” Not working on relationships, but embracing it. I’m sure you’ve heard the expression we have 60,000 thoughts a day, and that 90-95% of those thoughts are exactly the same, time after time. Well when it comes to our bodies, or body-image, it’s more like 99% of the time. For instance, if you’re concerned about your stomach, then when you hop out of the shower, that’s all you see, your belly. Or if it’s wrinkles around your eyes, then you might not see your toned thighs, but only those pesky wrinkles. No matter what the imperfection, or area for improvement, we give it a disproportionate amount of our attention. And based on the law of attraction, what we think about, is what we bring about. So focusing on what we don’t like, or what’s bothering us, only makes more of it. Instead, if we focus on what we do like, we bring more of that about as well. On top of that, we get more comfortable in our skin, or more comfortable with our bodies. This means greater self-confidence, healthier relationships, we become attractor magnets for more positive experiences in our lives, and yes, better body image, can also mean, better sex. Why? Because we’re more comfortable and confident, and that comes across to our partner as well! This meditation is really simple. We’re going to do a full body scan…looking only, and always for the positives. Remember what you resist, persists, so no looking for “negatives” or imperfections. Save that for another day, and may the nother day never come. Instead, let’s look for those amazing positives you have. And you do have them. We all do! For this meditation, I highly recommend laying down if at all possible. And getting good and comfortable, yes, this means a blanket or pillow too if that helps. Today we have a very authentic and heart-felt guest, I’d call him a bridge, between languages, cultures and ancient wisdom and the modern world. He’s a master, a student of the Toltec tradition, perhaps you could even call him a warrior, though not in the traditional terms. And he’s a Nagwal, but I’ll him share about that. His name is don Miguel Ruiz Jr. Don Miguel Ruiz JR, is the author of two very special books, The Five Levels of Attachment: Toltec Wisdom for the Modern World, and Living a Life of Awareness, Toltec Wisdom for the Modern World. You may be familiar with his father, who’s written some of the most beautiful spiritual books such as The Four agreements: A guide to Personal Freedom. At the age of 14, don Miguel Ruiz Jr. apprenticed to his father don Miguel Sr. and his grandmother, a faith healer, Madre Sarita. From that early age, he was called upon to translate Madre Sarita's prayers, lectures and workshops from Spanish into English. In this way, through constant repetition and review, he learned the content of her teachings in both languages. Don Miguel Jr.'s apprenticeship lasted 10 years. When he reached his mid-20's, his father intensified his training. At the apex of this power journey don Miguel said to his eldest son, "Find your way out. Go home and master Death by becoming alive." For the past eight years, don Miguel Jr. has applied the lessons learned from his father and grandmother to define and enjoy his own personal freedom while achieving peace with all of creation. Today, don Miguel Jr. is married and has two young children. And so, as a Nagual he begins once again to pass along the wisdom and the tools of his family's traditions in helping others to achieve their own personal freedom and optimal physical and spiritual health. Experiences?) 47: min - For me, I have crossed that threshold from concept to experience while jogging – usually around the one-mile marker. This is when I am no longer thinking about my route, pace, or even the pain in my legs. This is a moment when everything goes calm, and all I can feel is my breath, the stride, and the environment. My mind suddenly shuts off and I am completely in the moment, and I know exactly what I am doing without the need for thought. From this place even the term Authethic Self disappeares, along with the rest of my thoughts. I am simply alive with the complete freedom to love myself and everbody as I chose. I have no need to distort the information I perceive because my perception of life is unencumbered by any attachments. The authentic self is the harmony of mind, body and soul as the expression of life. Level 2 – the controlled folly The clean mirror What does Toltec mean? What was your upbringing like? This is a very simple meditation, that involves just a bit of movement to get the Chi, or energy unstuck and flowing again, from your brain, through your neck, and throughout your body. So you’ll want to do this sitting upright with either both feet symettrically on the floor, or sitting cross-legged good and tall. I’ll guide you through it, but in short, you’ll exhale as you turn your head to the left. Then inhale as you bring it back. Then exhale as you turn to the right. Then inhale as you bring it back, then exhale as you bring your head up, then inhale as you bring it down. Then exhale as you drop your chin, then inhale as you bring it up. For this exercise always exhale and inhale through the nose. Lastly, never turn your head to the point of discomfort, and begin lightly, with only a few repetitions. You can build up over time, strengthening your neck muscles and gaining flexibility. But begin with only 3-5 minutes, and never do this two days in a row, until your neck muscles have grown accustomed to it. However, after that time, feel free to gradually do as much as you’d like. I know before a big talk, I might do ten minutes, even twenty minutes of this exercise to quiet my mind, get my creative flowing, and feel energized all over! This is a meditation I used years ago to literally help save my life. I fell in a hiking accident, shattering my hip and femur, and was stuck in a freezing cold creek, bleeding out internally. I stopped breathing, and had a near-death experience, but that’s something for another day. But when I came back I needed to find a way to keep breathing until rescue crews could get to me. And so I did this meditation which I’d used in different ways for years. Thankfully I was well-versed at it, and it worked. You can do this meditation sitting upright, or laying down. Or even broken on the rocks. Technically, you can do it driving as well, but I rarely recommend meditating and driving together, and I wouldn’t recommend it here. You can do this meditation any time of the day, all you need is a few quiet moments, and a place to relax. As usual, I’d recommend in through the nose, and out through the nose as well. But if you have to, inhale through the nose, and out nice and slow through the mouth. We’re going to do this meditation in a really fun way, focusing on ourselves first, and then on others. There’s a few key reasons for this. First off, compassion rules. The more we cultivate compassion for ourselves and for others, the more we help raise the vibration of the entire planet. Secondly, science shows we release chemicals, happy-drugs in the brain, when we’re focused on helping others, that aren’t released when we’re focused on ourselves. This means we get a double-benefit, we get to help others, which helps us too, and by helping others, we get a direct benefit as well! It’s an exceptionally simple meditation, in essence, we’re going to breathe in light, and breathe out love. His Bulletproof Films released the company’s first documentary film, MOLDY, in June 2015. – which is the topic of conversation today. Background: Before we begin, a bit of background on us. This year Jessica and I moved from Maui to her parents place in New Jersey. It was an emergency move, after our health came crashing down around us. We didn’t know what was going on. For two years Jessica was getting sicker and sicker. We thought it was the air from a neighboring volcano, until we realized getting her out of the house, and into an air conditioned car or anywhere else on the island and suddenly she’d feel better. Get her out, she felt human, and became a little chatterbox. Bring her home, she’d been exhausted, unable to speak intelligently, frazzled, with headaches, nausea and feeling sick. For myself, my downward slide took the form of an old and fragile body…with unexplainable minor injury after injury, and with a fall that lead to a near death accident---later tested to reveal incredibly weak bone density, despite lots of activity. On top of that I struggled with brain fog. For Jessica, this meant she was back in bad, almost unable to finish sentences by the time it was noon. For me, it meant the shortest attention span and inability to multi-task I’ve ever experienced. And this from a life coach who’s specialized in working with those with ADD, myself included. It wasn’t until a week before we left, with the world crashing down around us, that the cleaners found a carpet 1 inch thick of black mold on the upper level of the house where we couldn’t see it. It was in the walls, on all upper surfaces, on the ceiling, and even in the skylights…though we’d been told it was dirt. We are so lucky to have gotten out. The previous tenant who lived in our home for seven years, came down with what we believe was terminal brain cancer. On that light note, let’s jump right into things. Big question is: What’s the smallest intervention possible? Key Exercise: For 21 days in a row think of 3 things they’re grateful for each morning or each day you get into work (CHECK OUT OUR HAPPINESS MEDITATION FOR A SIMILAR GUIDED MEDITATION EXERCISE) This activity of scanning the world is extremely powerful. It can take people who have been genetically low-level pessimists, and in 21 days turn them into life-long optimists!!! Doing this exercise with 4 year olds at the dinner table, having them scan for things to be grateful for, can turn them from lifelong default pessimist to lifelong optimist. Every outcome improves when human brain is positive first As important children practice this as brushing their teeth or eating breakfast. An extremely important habit for both kids and adults alike – for adults important to practice this before going to work, or first thing when they get in to work. Important note on this exercise: Must be things are grateful for that are NEW (that’s occurred over last 24 hours and why) Rewires the brain to start to scan for the positive and see the opportunities that are around you. Without exercises like this, your ability to focus on the positive can atrophy. 5 HABITS THAT CREATE POSITIVE CHANGE Every day when get into work, first job to write 2 minute positive email praising or thanking someone they know. Do this for just 3 days in a row and people literally get addicted to it, and others write great emails back. 21 days later on your social connection score is off the chart in social support, because you have 21 people you’ve meaningfully activated. The Single greatest predictor of long term happiness is breathe, depth, and meaning of social networks. Social connection is as predictive of life expectancy as the food you eat, how much exercise you do, and even whether you smoke or not. Social connections are why western males don’t live as long as their female counterparts, and why western males are so much more likely to have heart-attacks. Success rarely leads to happiness However, if you can get someone to be positive, they rise to the highest possibility within your band of potential Lucky vs. unlucky people Unlucky people are simply not focused on the positives and so don’t see the potential around them. This meditation can be done anytime of the day, but I recommend it first thing after you get up in the morning, or definitely before you head out the door. This is a great one to commit to for 21 days. This is a meditation that gets easier over time. At first, it’s difficult for the mind, as we’re not wired to find happiness quickly. At 5'4" and only 104 pounds, no one knew quite what to expect as 41-year-old Deena Kastor lined up for the 2014 Philadelphia Rock 'N' Roll Half-Marathon. An Olympic bronze medalist and American record holder for the marathon, she'd recently set two American master's records on her way to victory at the Dallas Rock 'N' Roll Half Marathon. For this race, her goal was even larger; she was eyeing a world-record. As she lined up, she had nervous butterflies, or what she calls "excitement," a feeling she describes as being completely prepared and ready to get to the task at hand. Years earlier, feeling supremely prepared for the biggest race of her life, her body broke. Only three miles in at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, a stress fracture took her out of her race. But that was then. For most elite runners, 41 is well past retirement, particularly for a mother with a daughter who's now four. But Deena had had a string of successes in recent years and was showing no sign of slowing down. She says it was touch-and-go, that she thought about giving up, but dug deep and went for it. It was a race for the record books and she did it! In just 13.1 miles, Deena Castor wiped out 4 world master's records, from the 5 km through the half marathon. So how'd she do it, and what can we learn from her? Deena has an amazing attitude, a positivity and sense of gratitude about her that spills over into everything she does. She attributes a large part of her success to her mindfulness, a practice she's used to cultivate her positive attitude and what she calls an "attitude of gratitude" over the years. She says it's not something she was born with but had to work at. Recently I had the opportunity to sit down with Deena virtually and ask her about her practice. I wanted to understand how her lessons could benefit others. Her attitude was infectious; it was hard not to laugh and smile as she shared the ups and downs of her journey, and how she's stayed positive through it all. Most importantly, she shared 10 key ways we can all use mindfulness to make our own lives better, whether in the big race, or the even bigger race of life. Live a Quality, Purposeful Life Deena: "Goals aren't just pursued in the moment, but in the choices we make throughout the day." To juggle the competing demands of being a public speaker, high-profile athlete and mother, Deena has to be incredibly mindful of how she chooses to spend her time. She works to "trim the fat" making sure there's nothing in her day that doesn't serve her. She wants her time to be filled with high quality activities, surrounded with the people she loves -- always on purpose. Live with an Attitude of Gratitude Deena: "I am grateful to live the life that I love, and love the life that I'm living." Deena says, "I like to immerse myself in the greatness of the opportunity" being incredibly grateful for everything she does and everywhere she goes. She was asked to keep a gratitude list, to pick ten things each day to be grateful for, but she could never have duplicates. At first it was easy, but then she really had to start searching for things to put on the list that were different than before.
