TRIGGERED! When you use whatever you can to escape reality

Have you found yourself reaching for whatever it is you can - a substance, experience, behavior, or whatever else - to escape the present moment? Yup, I've done that too. Many times! This episode of TRIGGERED! is, in many ways, a continuation of my episode on addictions and compulsive behavior. But this time we're focusing on the impulse to "check out", to not be here, to not be in your body, to escape reality. Join me for a discussion of: - where the impulse to check out or escape comes from (and how it relates to being highly sensitive) - why and how this impulse drives us to engage in self-destructive or harmful behaviors - why it's important to NOT demonize or punish yourself for wanting to escape - recognizing that your addictions and attachments to the things, substances, and behaviors you use to check out are not happening in a vacuum; there are entire industries invested in keeping you addicted (and how touching into your sacred anger about this can help in breaking those attachments) To connect with me directly, please head over to www.josephinehardman.com or write to [email protected] Thank you for tuning in! TRIGGERED! When you can't stop eating sugar (or engaging in some other addictive behavior)

"Addictions always originate in pain, whether felt openly or hidden in the unconscious." - Dr. Gabor Mate This episode of TRIGGERED! takes on the topic of addictive behaviors through my own personal experience with food and sugar addiction. Join me for a discussion of: - what fuels us to engage in addictive behaviors even when we know they're harming us - the importance of not making an addiction or addictive substance the enemy - how the addictive cycle keeps us stuck in a loop of obsessive thinking and robs us of peace, vitality, and energy - softening addictive tendencies by understanding WHY and HOW you've used them as a coping mechanism or as a response to trauma - for sugar addiction in particular, the importance of cultivating more "sweetness" and self-compassion in your daily life I mention a number of resources throughout the episode. TRIGGERED! When you have difficulty trusting your intuition

Your intuition is your inner guidance system and inner GPS. As such, it gives you information about the people, places, and situations that are aligned with you - as well as the people, places, and situations that are not. Through this guidance, you can decide what to move towards to and what to move away from. In this episode of TRIGGERED!, I address the important topic of being able to trust your intuition and intuitive nudges. Specific themes include: How your trust in your own intuition can become corroded over time for a variety of reasons (for example: if it was unsafe to trust in your feelings and perceptions growing up, if you've been privileging your head and logical thinking over your heart and intuition, or if you feel unworthy of receiving clear information from your Guides) The intuitive channels through which you receive information and guidance Your body as a vehicle of divine communication 6 specific blocks that make it hard to trust your intuition and the messages that come through (and how to work with each one) In the episode, I mention this article on the 5 clairs: https://josephinehardman.com/how-to-develop-your-intuition-with-the-5-clairs/ Thank you so much for being here! This first episode covers: an overview of the Swords as a suit how the journey through the Swords is a cautionary tale about the undisciplined ego mind how this suit warns us about the dangers of privileging head over heart the suit's double-edged nature, which is reflective of the mind as a double-edged "tool" how we sometimes develop a coping mechanism of retreating into the head to avoid our feelings or suppress heart trauma I also dive into the Ace of Swords, 2 of Swords, and 3 of Swords to provide detailed interpretations of each card. TRIGGERED! When you're in a one-sided friendship

Being in a one-sided friendship can be triggering (and exhausting!). This episode responds to a listener email by exploring what happens when you give your full support and attention to a friend, but they don't give you a reciprocal exchange of energy and presence. Our listener was triggered, specifically, when a friend would multitask, check their phone, or otherwise get distracted during their interactions (particularly when it was time for our listener to share and be heard). In the episode, I also talk about: how being highly sensitive can make us feel more upset or rejected when friends don't seem to be fully present with us the importance of speaking up for your needs in friendships & relationships (and how to do so) the valuable lesson of releasing one-sided friendships my own recent experience of having to let a friendship go Thank you for tuning in! TRIGGERED! When someone tries to prove you wrong

Feeling criticized or called out on something can feel so uncomfortable. So triggering! This episode investigates what happens to us when someone tries to prove us "wrong" - whether they're responding to something we've created, something we've said or done, or a personal opinion. I offer two specific, grounding questions to stay as centered as you can and evaluate the criticism you receive as peacefully and openly as possible. I also touch on cases or situations where it might be ok to evalute that criticism critically and detach from it if it's coming from a hostile or close-minded place. An important point of this episode is that being called out on something - or when someone tries to prove you wrong - can be an excellent opportunity for growth, learning, and examining your own beliefs. Inner Work 108: Emotional Labor (and the Emotional Work of Being a Healer)

What is emotional labor? How do you know when you're doing it? And what are the costs and consequences associated with that labor? Join me for an in-depth exploration of emotional labor, what it is, and how to recognize when you're doing it (and why you're doing it). In this episode, I offer specific examples of emotional labor across three spaces: at home, in relationships, and in your work as a healer or service-based provider. As healers, we must engage in particular kinds of emotional labor when we work with clients individually or in group settings. As we run through the different types of emotional labor you might be doing in your life and work, I invite you to notice which of these you tend to engage in the most... and which are most draining for you. What kind of emotional labor are you doing simply out of a sense of obligation, family expectations, or social conditioning? Are you doing emotional labor to please others or avoid conflict? If so, how can you shift that pattern? In this episode, I announced my Akashic Records Level 1 Training Course. TRIGGERED! When you're having a hard time and someone tells you to just "be positive"

Has anyone ever told you to just "be positive" or "think positive" while you were in the midst of a crisis, having a challenge, or experiencing intense emotions? Did this make you want to rip that person's head off? Yup, I've been there too! In this episode of TRIGGERED!, I talk about the experience of being told to just "be positive" and how this can make you feel triggered, alone, angry, or dismissed. This may also trigger the feeling that your experience or emotions are being minimized. TRIGGERED! When you abandon or betray yourself

Self-abandonment is really common in our culture. It can take many different forms, but it's often related to denying or suppressing your own needs to act in ways that are deemed acceptable by others. Our western culture frequently encourages us to move towards this place of self-denial, suppression, and twisting ourselves to fit external expectations and demands. Part of this has to do with being affable, with not creating conflict, with being perceived as a helpful and productive and easygoing person. In this episode of Triggered, we explore what it means to abandon or betray yourself. I run through some specific examples of self-abandonment and offer suggestions for reclaiming your self-worth and becoming your own ally and advocate. TRIGGERED! When you feel shame about being too sensitive

This episode of TRIGGERED! is going out to my fellow highly sensitive people and empaths. Do you sometimes (still) get triggered when you feel you're "too sensitive", or if someone else makes you feel that you are, or if you even have the slightest inkling that someone might be perceiving you that way? Yup, me too! Especially if you grew up hearing that you're too sensitive, or you need to grow a thicker skin, or you take things too personally, you might have developed a sense of shame about your sensitivity. In this episode, we dive into the experience of feeling shame about our heightened sensitivity and what we can do with that shame when it gets triggered. Inner Work 103: Healing Past Life Trauma

It's very likely that you've lived lifetimes as a human before your current life. Some of the painful, traumatizing, or challenging experiences from your past lives might still remain unresolved. We can think of past life trauma in a number of different ways – for example, we have all experienced both individual and collective trauma in past lives. Trauma from your past lives, if it remains unresolved, tends to become embedded somewhere in your energy field. You also hold memories of that trauma at a cellular level. This is why you can sometimes experience not only emotional but also physical symptoms related to past life trauma. In this episode, I delve into the topic of past life trauma and offer a few specific indicators or signs that your current challenges - whether emotional, physical, spiritual, or relational - might be related to past life issues. I also discuss how the Akashic Records are one of the most ideal tools for healing this kind of trauma. TRIGGERED! When the same old issue shows up in your life again

This episode of TRIGGERED! is about those moments when the "same old" issue shows up in your life... yet again. This could be an issue or pattern (or even physical symptom) you've faced many times before. Sometimes, it feels like it goes into "remission" or like you've finally moved beyond it, but then it pops up again when you least expect it. Gah! Having a human experience can be so tough. I offer some real talk on how to face these old demons again when they pop up. The major focus of the episode is on how to move through the intense feelings that can come up in these moments: shame, anger, frustration, hopelessness, discouragement, sometimes even despair. I also lay out 4 specific suggestions for helping yourself face the same old issue, pattern, or symptom more compassionately and productively when it does show up. Inner Work 102: An Inside Look into an Akashic Records Healing Session

E

For this special episode of Inner Work, I had the privilege of working with a respected friend, Thomas the Hermit, as we journeyed into his Akashic Records and then recorded a debrief of the experience. You will hear Thomas speak about the session candidly - what happened, what we saw and received from the Records, and how the information helped him. Our conversation provides an inside look into an Akashic Records Healing Session. If you've ever wondered how this modality can help you accelerate your healing, overcome dysfunctional patterns, and reconnect to the highest-level version of yourself (i.e., your Higher Self, Soul, Divine Self), this episode will shed some light on all of that. It also provides a case study of how the Akashic Records can be accessed - and the kinds of information that can come through - with the help of a trained reader. TRIGGERED! When people cross or disrespect your boundaries

Boundaries! A perpetually hot issue in the spiritual and healing worlds. Boundaries are something we must all continually work on while we're incarnated in human bodies. It's so important to have clear and healthy boundaries to delineate where you end and where someone else begins. This can help you stay true to your core needs and desires instead of losing your sense of self in relationships or in other people. In this episode, I respond to a listener email about one of her triggers - when people try to tell her what to do and when people cross her boundaries. Join me for this discussion as we delve into the "freeze" response that can habitually get triggered when others disrespect or test your boundaries, especially if you grew up with poor boundaries or parents/caregivers who were unable to model healthy boundary-setting. I also talk about "sacred anger" and how reawakening this energy within you can lead to powerful healing and help you stand your ground - no matter where you are, who you're with, or what's being asked of you. Inner Work 101: Ancestral Healing with Lauren McGill (Woman of Rivers)

I recently had the pleasure of interviewing the deeply soulful, compassionate, and knowledgeable Lauren McGill (Woman of Rivers). Lauren is a spiritualist, diviner, and root worker living in New Orleans. In her work as Woman of Rivers, she utilizes the Tarot for insight, growth, and healing as she helps her clients release old patterns and powerfully connect with their ancestors. To extend the scope of her work, Lauren is currently studying Art Therapy, a practice she intends to integrate with ancestral healing modalities of breathwork and herbal medicine making. In this interview, we talk about ancestral healing: what it is, why it's important, and where you can start. We also chat about Lauren's healing journey and how water (and fluidity!) has been an essential element in both her business and private life. TRIGGERED! When you feel excluded, rejected, or like an outcast

This episode of TRIGGERED! explores the issue of feeling excluded, rejected, or like an "alien" or outcast. (Have you been there? Me too!) I respond to a listener's message about this and dive into the root of these painful feelings that can get activated whenever you feel left out or overlooked. Join me as we explore why we get triggered when we feel unseen or excluded and what we can do to soothe or relate differently to this trigger. We'll also go back in time to locate your "primary rejection" -- that first conscious memory of being rejected, excluded, unseen, or mocked simply for being who you are. Healing that core wound of rejection and compassionately holding the part of you that's still suffering because of it is the key to releasing this trigger. I'd love to hear your feedback on this episode! Please email me any time at [email protected] . I would also love to hear about your own triggers so we can work through them together. TRIGGERED! When you feel unsafe or uncomfortable in your body

Being in a human, physical body can be very triggering at times. It can feel dense, unsafe, or uncomfortable to be in a body. This sometimes leads us to try to escape the body through coping mechanisms like overeating, undereating, drinking too much, checking out from reality, or spiritual bypassing. It can also feel unsafe to be in your body if you've experienced trauma of any kind in this lifetime. In this episode, I address a few different forms of trauma you might have experienced that could still be affecting your ability to feel grounded and embodied. I also offer two practices to begin healing your relationship to your body. *DISCLAIMER: nothing in this episode should be considered a substitute for medical, psychological, or psychiatric advice or treatment.* If you need specialized help working through body-based trauma, you can find a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner here: https://directory.traumahealing.org To connect with me directly, you can head over to www.josephinehardman.com And please feel free to respond to this episode and/or share your own triggers by emailing [email protected] Thank you for tuning in and supporting the podcast by leaving a rating or review or, better yet, sharing it with a good friend. Inner Work 099: Healing Your Relationship to Time

Having a dysfunctional relationship to time can make it difficult to stay present and grounded in each moment. In this episode, I explore the modern syndrome called "hurry sickness", which tends to manifest in the following ways: - a feeling of always trying to beat the clock (and always keeping an eye on the clock) - a feeling of never having enough hours in the day - the compulsion to do more and more in less and less time - inability to relax at the end of the day or even when you're away from work - frustration, irritability, anxiety, and stress regarding time and deadlines - physical symptoms such as muscle aches, tension headaches, insomnia, and restlessness in the body After examining the different ways in which "hurry sickness" might be showing up in your life, we'll dive into practical and spiritual approaches to heal your relationship to time. Applying the suggestions in this episode will help you feel more expansive, less hurried, and anchored in the present moment. Thank you for listening and supporting the podcast! TRIGGERED! When you compare yourself to others (and feel inadequate or not good enough)

A very common trigger that most of us experience is comparing ourselves to others and then feeling worse about ourselves. This is also called "compare & despair", and it can bring up intense feelings of inadequacy, not being good enough, and impostor syndrome. In this episode, I dive into this particular trigger and the different ways in which it might be showing up in your life. I share what has helped me become un-triggered and shift my experience with "compare & despair" into a doorway for expansion and for identifying my true desires. I also delve into the shadow side of comparing ourselves to others and offer suggestions for working with that shadow. I hope this will be helpful for you, wherever you are on the healing path! TRIGGERED! When you feel unheard or misunderstood

Today, we begin with a powerful quote from Victor Frankl: "Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom." These words remind us that we don't have to respond reactively to life. That we can notice and work with our triggers to diminish our knee-jerk reactions, which can often cause suffering for ourselves and/or others. In this episode, I answer a listener email about a specific triggering situation: when you feel unheard or misunderstood in the context of an intimate relationship (or friendship). I share what I have found useful in these situations. I also encourage you to examine past relationship dynamics - including your relationships with your parents - so you can take stock of the unhealed or core wounds you bring with you into your interactions with people now. TRIGGERED! When your brain won't let you meditate

You finally find a quiet moment to meditate, you sit down, close your eyes, take a few deep breaths... and your brain is off to the races. The ego mind can often get in the way of your meditation practice by pulling you in many different directions. In this mini-episode, I explore the most common interference patterns used by the brain and ego mind when you try to meditate. I also share a few journaling or reflection prompts so you can explore the idea of surrendering, letting go of control, and creating more space between you and your ego mind. Additionally, I offer some alternative practices if sitting still in complete silence is too unbearable for you. Sometimes this can be a sign that you're tapping into "frozen" or unresolved trauma, so it's important to be mindful of what's happening in your body and take a more gradual approach to meditation. If this episode is helpful for you, please consider leaving a rating or review on Apple Podcasts - or, better yet, telling a friend about the podcast! TRIGGERED! When you put yourself out there and someone criticizes you

Becoming less reactive is an important goal on your path of healing and spiritual awakening. To respond to situations from a place of wisdom, higher truth, and confidence – instead of responding out of fear, worry, anger, or any kind of knee-jerk reaction. This goal of becoming less reactive – and therefore becoming more centered and grounded in the present moment – is what inspired this new experimental series of mini-episodes, which I'm calling TRIGGERED! (with an exclamation point because when you get triggered, it can be pretty intense). Through these episodes, I also want to bring some levity and lightness to the process of spiritual development, which can sometimes really challenge you. In this first mini-episode, we'll be working with what happens (and what to do) when you put yourself out there and someone criticizes you. This topic was inspired by one of my own triggers, so this episode includes a personal anecdote. I then shift to the bigger picture and some specific takeaways as you strive to put yourself out there as well. I'd love for this series to be a dialogue between you and me, so please send me your triggers (as you become aware of them) via email: [email protected] To connect with me, head over to www.josephinehardman.com or www.instagram.com/purefield.healing Thank you for being here and supporting the podcast! These messages include guidance about what to focus on, what to prioritize right now, and potential areas for deeper healing in your life. Inner Work 093: The Practice of Shifting to a Higher Truth

As spiritual beings in human bodies, we can sometimes get caught up in the illusion of 3D reality. Bills must be paid, kids must be driven to school (or educated at home during a pandemic!), cars must be repaired, and dinner must be cooked. We also have to interact with others and navigate a chaotic world. In this process, we can get lost in material reality and forget to stay connected to a Higher Perspective. In this episode, I talk about how you can disengage from the illusions of 3D reality and reach for the higher truth of any situation or experience. This requires you to reconnect to Divine Source over and over again. Finding the higher truth means becoming more aware of what your Soul would say about any situation or challenge you're facing. As you do this, you expand your perspective and shift to a more hopeful, joyful, supported, and empowered state.
